Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League season continues with this preview of Burnley.

After a tenth-place finish in 2019/20, last season was a little underwhelming for Sean Dyche’s side.

The Clarets failed to pick up three points until November, and ended the season just as poorly, losing seven of their final nine matches.

In the end, survival was confirmed by a comfortable 11 points, thanks largely to a good run of results over the festive period, but a 17th place finish indicates that the current squad needs reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

DOUBLE FIGURES FOR WOOD AGAIN

Despite that, there were positives, including the performances of Chris Wood (£7.0m).

The 29-year-old scored 12 Premier League goals as he recorded double figures for the fourth consecutive season, and finished particularly strongly, registering eight goals and three assists between Gameweeks 27 and 35.

Chris Wood’s xG shot map 2020/21

However, for large parts of the season he struggled, which isn’t a huge surprise given Burnley’s attacking numbers:

MIDFIELD FOUND WANTING

One of the key areas Sean Dyche will surely look to address this summer is the lack of goals throughout the rest of the team.

None of Wood’s team-mates managed to score more than three, with their midfielders combining for a measly three big chances over the entire season. It really was that bad.

Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) and Ashley Westwood (£5.5m) do at least provide some threat from set-pieces and crossing, and Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) may appear in a few squads simply as a budget enabler, but even the most ardent Burnley fan would struggle to get too excited about their attacking assets given their Gameweeks 1-8 fixtures:

Aside from Wood, MatÄ›j Vydra (£5.5m) is perhaps the other forward with the most potential.

The Czech put himself back in contention with some good performances at the end of the season, with his partnership with Wood adding a new layer to Burnley’s attack.

However, he has always struggled to maintain a regular place under Dyche, and it’s hard to see that changing with Ashley Barnes (£5.5m) and Jay Rodriguez (£5.5m) also vying for starts.

DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

Meanwhile, Burnley had a surprisingly porous defence since the turn of the year, as they kept just five clean sheets in 23 fixtures.

During that period, they conceded 35 goals, and aside from a legendary Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) haul in Double Gameweek 24, it was all a bit uninspiring.

Over the course of the season, Nick Pope’s (£5.5m) points-per-match average of 4.5 was the best among Burnley assets and the fourth-highest among Fantasy goalkeepers.

The Burnley no. 1 managed to hit clean sheet double figures (11) for the second consecutive season, with only Emiliano Martínez (£5.5m) collecting more bonus points, which does suggest he could be a useful asset at times next season, providing the fixtures fall kindly.

However, with Pope coming in as one of the more expensive goalkeepers in the game, and given last season’s defensive numbers, it does maybe feel a little pricey for what’s on offer.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded5515th
Shots conceded57018th
Shots in the box conceded35818th
Shots on target conceded17915th
Big chances conceded7312th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.5615th

Some of those totals may cause concern, but they do require careful analysis.

Burnley do give up a lot of shots, that’s clear, but they also get a lot of bodies behind the ball, and it’s no surprise that centre-backs Ben Mee (£5.0m) and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) both ranked in the top three defenders for blocks last season.

The full-backs also played their part, and that could be where the real value lies.

Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) played his way back into form in the second half of the season, and a quick comparison between his performances from Gameweeks 1-22 and 23-38 highlight just how much his role developed as the campaign went on, and essentially how much more attacking he became:

Above: Matthew Lowton’s attacking numbers between Gameweeks 1-22 (left) and Gameweeks 23-38 (right). Averages per match shown.

Investing in Lowton from Gameweek 9 could be an idea, then, when the Clarets’ fixtures ease:

FINAL THOUGHTS

Wood’s consistency helped Burnley get over the line last season, but if they want to progress, he will need help on the goalscoring front in 2021/22.

Having recently been acquired by American business firm ALK Capital, the hope is now that they can add new faces to a squad that has been stretched to the limit in recent times.

The early signs are promising, with defender Nathan Collins (£4.5m) arriving from Stoke City for an initial £12m fee last month, but it’s those attacking midfield areas where additions are needed most.

As it stands, the only offensive asset worth considering is Wood, and it’s worth noting that he will return to training late as he has been named in New Zealand’s squad for the Olympics, with the final on August 7, just one week before the Premier League season kicks off.

FPL managers should probably look elsewhere to begin with, then, and reassess ahead of Gameweek 9 when their fixtures ease.

What do you think of setting team like this for Euro finals?

    Donna
    Emerson Shaw Maguire Stones
    Sterling Insigne Chiesa Barella Saka
    Kane(c)

Not aure on Saka could be Bonucci

Like it. Personally going for Mount > Sterling as some sort of differential, if you can call him that. Like the Saka pick. I think both teams score so im personally going 3 ATB. I’m chasing so trying something different. Something like this:

      Donna
      Shaw Di Lorenzo Emerson
      Insigne Chiesa Barella Saka Mount
      Kane Immobile

Being on the right side of those Lowton and John Stones hauls last season was pure luck and dragged me up about 250k places in rank. Both were just convenient picks then ended up going nuts.

Lowton definitely a bit of jam, but Stones was a great pick. Showed consistent threat in the opposition box.

So what do we know about City's defensive lineup? 4 at the back.

Dias, Cancelo, Stones, Walker, Zinchenko, Mendy, Laporte, Ake.

The last couple of games it lined up as:

    Walker, Stones, Dias, Zinchenko

But prior to that Cancelo got himself Red Carded for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

I currently have Zinchenko, as I read elsewhere that by the end of the season he'd worked his way into the preferred slot.

Mendy and Laporte are backup I presume?

For whatever it's worth, Manchester Evening News within the last couple weeks was reporting that Zinky was starting the season as the starting LB.

Don't know how credible that source is five weeks out from opening weekend, but I don't think fullback is a place where you can put your mind at ease with respect to Pep's plans. Stones seems the safest bet at 5.5 with the buzz being that Laporte may be on his way out.

      Cancelo / Walker - Dias - Stones - Zinchenko / Cancelo

Laporte and Mendy both once major components are now bit parts..?

      Ake

Got to say I'm tempted by one or two City defenders. Dias and one of Cancelo/Stones and then having a decent bench...

Remember that outside of England, the whole world and his wife wanted Denmark to win, seeing as what they through with Eriksson.
So they will jump all over indiscretions like the laser pen, the soft penalty, the booing of the Danish anthem, England's goals coming from a penalty and an own goal etc.

It feel a bit pointless working on a team until its known what will happen with Kane, but this is probably the best I have come up with so far, in a 3:5:2 formation.

Those Liverpool early fixtures look plum hence the premium defensive double-up.

    Bachman / Foster
    TAA / Robbo / Lowton / Forfana / 4.0
    Salah / Bruno / Soucek / Sarr / Zaha
    DCL / Bamford / 4.5

Repost soz - wrong thread just now. At least less than fully template.

First proper draft - couldn't resist. This one is all dependent on KdB not being crocked. Could slot Bruno in there. Generally suspicious of premium defence early on. Generally aiming for settled sides early on to hit the ground running. Kane at Spurs? Wasn't poor last time

Might help if I actually posted team perhaps. Thoughts?

      Dubravka
      AWB Lamptey Godfrey*
      Mo KdB Barnes Sarr
      Kane Wilson Welbeck**

      4.0 Ayling Gilmour Johnson

      * I have an extremely poor relationship with Digne but quite fancy Everton defence and having a 5.0 in there.
** Might end up with Toney ahead of Welbeck but do like the idea of Brighton attack.

Godfey to Fofana and then Sarr to Raph is clearly an option.

Barnes and Lamptey are pretty much locked in for me and Wilson my favourite 7.5. But really just seeing how 3 premiums could work - seems very doable.

Dubious about big defence early season - that much I suspect I will stick with. I'm going to go WC relatively early but won't be going big in defence until we have form there. Got bitten by going early Pool last time. They were cack even before VVD got injured and City were poor late. That's one area that is wait and see for me.

Pretty good supporting cast for 3 premiums: like Sarr, Wilson and Welbz.

              71 points in 2260 minutes = 2.5 PPG

Yep Fofana does look great - think I'm just that bit keener on Everton defence but maybe it's not 0.5 well spent.

I'm not kidding myself this time around and looking beyond weeks 6/7 at the furthest as the WC button will be hit. With that in mind Everton defence just looks better right now.

He'a wait and see. Bruno probs looks more sensible of course. Interchangable from price point of view.

I'm just ignoring the last 8 games or so last season when the title was effectively wrapped up - parallel with Liverpool in that season. Looking at his underlying numbers he could well have a ballistic season but - as with Sterling - I suspect he thrives when there's a proper forward playing and doesn't actually work best with the multiple false 9s.

Injury situation a bother. Is there a reason why Mahrez will be on pens?

Just avoiding Sanchez due to Lamptey who is a lock for me - until he pulls a hammy preseason.

Like the look of early Newcastle fixtures mostly and the fact that they are a fairly settled unit - something I'm prioritising early on before WC.

Lowish expectations but don't see the point in over investing in gk from week 1.

Fair, I’ve avoided Lamptey for that reason. Had my fingers burned last year with the constant injuries, benchings and 55th minute substitutions. I would be a bit concerned about injuries in your team. There are quite a few injury prone players there. I do like a lot of the picks tho!

I stayed up til 4:30am last night pondering having no Bruno. Or Shaw. No Man Utd.

The risk is that the 'effective ownership' will kill you when they do score points.
However, it also means you've gone off the template, so when your non-popular players do score, then you'll do better than the rest.

      My thinking is

Man utd scored 73 goals last year… and have added Sancho, have a more settled Cavani, will probably have an injury free Rashford if he finally gets the surgery, will have Greenwood with another year’s experience under his belt, and Martial back fit…

Looking at all of that - the two macro trends I’d expect to see with them are :

      (1) more goals - I’d conservatively estimate they’re going to score 5-10 more, to put them on 80+ (But if Sancho really settled and they really clicked, they could go higher - but be conservative for now)

      (2) more rotation - in the front 3 positions - Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood, Martial, Cavani are all interchangeable and can play in most of those front 3 roles - so I think we’ll see a lot of rotation from Ole this season, or at least more than last season

Putting those together - i think Bruno is the guy.

He did get tired towards the end of last season (partially Ole’s fault doing stupid things like starting him in EL second legs on Thursdays when already 4-0 up vs sociedad)

But luckily he managed to recover and had still managed 2 goals in his final 4 appearances

For RPL purposes - He should be sitting behind that rotating front 3 all season, hoovering up his 9-10 penalties, double figure assists, the odd goal from play, a DFK here & there…

Carlsberg don’t do FPL assets, but if they did…

        Very reasonable analysis.

Above I have KdB pencilled in but rationally I should have Bruno of course 🙂 Both are perhaps placeholders for Sancho though so I can invest elsewhere. Some chance of that all going Havertz and it may be he comes in priced prohibitively but as a natural gambler he's going to tempt me oh so much.

Agree on the probable increased goal output but wonder if his slice of the returns will be fairly static if Sancho pops up. Still an amazing option of course so....

It's his worth as an FPL asset I'm waiting on. Decent at 6.5 but not a stand out for me - certainly not in line with his value to Leeds as a whole.

Spotted the disparity with Harrison fairly early on. He got unlucky for sure and missed minutes but simply on the evidence of last season he is one who ticks over and not that much more. Good choice of course but not the explosive type I'm eying up.

      Don’t be benching Raphinha anyways

      - Didnt join Leeds until GW5
      - Didn’t get his first start until GW9
      - Didn’t start to produce consistently until GW14
      - Got 14 returns in next 22 appearances GW14-38

There’s a lot of noise about his poor fixtures:

      - GW1 - Old Trafford - Raphinha double returned there last season
      - GW2 - Everton - Raphinha scored in both games against Everton last season
      - GW3 - Burnley - Leeds scored 5 in two games vs. Burnley last season (Raphinha also returned vs them)
      - GW4 - Liverpool - Leeds scored 4 in 2 games vs. Liverpool - including 3 at Anfield with VVD & Joemez playing
      - GW5 - Newcastle - Raphinha got a goal, assist & baps in his last game vs Newcastle

Leeds scored 62 goals last season and all bar Phillips will have a full pre-season again under Bielsa to rest & recuperate

Yeah I know how good he is and not inclined towards benching him. Only worry is Leeds played in a pragmatic/defensive way at home v/s United after getting trashed at OT. I feel Bielsa will play with a similar approach.

However if Philips does not start GW1 then I am benching Raphinha for sure.

Shaw will arrive late but him not having a break could be to his benefit. Has been brilliant but last season started slowly (as usual) A bench option I am not so sure about. Don't expect a clean sheet though.
Raphina is fixture proof IMO and will have more space against big sides. More likely to score FPL points than Shaw in the first game.
Jota has been God awful the latter part of the season and the Euros. If you want to bench him in the 1st game vs Norwich, why pick him in the first place?

Italy for sure, will be England's hardest test to date. But I believe it will be the easiest for Southgate tactics. Verratti and Jorginho, like Modric and Kovacic will try to run the game, albeit better. If Southgate gets Phillips high onto Jorginho and Mount strangle Verratti, I believe England will win the game.

Looks like a WC choice to me more than a week 1 investment, Take him down and then you can add elsewhere - TAA Lamptey Shaw with no effective back up looks very high risk to me.

Arteta has a good enough squad, without European football, to finish in the Top 5:

      Leno
      Bellerin White Gabriel Tierney
      Partey Torreira
      Pepe ESR Saka
      Aubameyang

      Runarsson
      Cedric Holding Mari Tavares
      Elneny AMN
      Willian Ceballos Martinelli
      Lacazette

Backup: Okonkwo (GK), Chambers (DF), Nelson (MF), Nketiah (FW)

Buy: White, Ceballos (backup for ESR)
      Sell: Xhaka, Kolasinac, Willock
      Loan Out: Saliba

That whole squad, other than Auba and Laca, are under 30. Arsenal finished 6 pts of 4th place last season. They do not need wholesale change. And wholesale change doesn't usually work anyway because it is too much change.

Arteta needs to pick a settled side and build relationships between the players on the pitch. The link between Bellerin and Pepe, Tierney and Saka, ESR and Auba etc.

So you know last season started with loads of goals, well I saw the season total was very similar to other years (about 1060 goals), so I think that idea of big at the back being better value might still hold. I had started to question it. Plus look at the point totals, only a handful of obvious mids and strikers beat a whole crop of defenders around 150 points. I like about 9 defenders, I can't say the same about mids or even liking say 6 forwards.

    1. Moderately content penguin
      • 6 Years

The issue I have with big at the back is that those defences are form reliant too. You need to pick your time - and defence come to that.

City were golden for the middle third of the season but fairly horrid to start and end with. Chelsea likewise were golden but scarcely throughout, Liverpool were poor even before VVD got injured - nothing like in line with previous seasons.

Current policy is wait and see to which defence starts to click and then mover funds back then. This is partially based on going heavy on Liverpool in expectation of fixture swing.

7.5 and 8.0 strikers tend to have more points even they are 7.0.

So Watkins, Nacho, and Bamford should be 8, and 9 to fill the gap although thats not what we want to be happen 😀
