What can FPL managers expect from midfielder Francisco Trincao at Wolves?

Francisco Trincao (£6.0m) is a new addition to the mid-price Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielder pool.

The 21-year-old winger has signed a season-long loan deal at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the club holding an option to make the move from Barcelona permanent at the end of the campaign.

Trincao has already made six appearances for his native Portugal, so will be somewhat familiar with a number of his new teammates.

While he will be hoping to impress Bruno Lage and the Wolves coaching staff, we assess whether or not the attacker can make an FPL impression this season.

You can read more on the new Wolves boss here.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

The History

Trincao made his senior debut for Braga’s reserve side in April 2016, before graduating to the club’s senior set-up late in 2018.

He managed just 88 minutes over the 2018/19 campaign, before breaking into the first team with 17 starts the next season.

The 21-year-old impressed enough to earn a move to Barcelona, which was confirmed in January 2020 but became effective once the 2019/20 campaign had ended.

Playing time was limited in La Liga for Trincao last season, as he made just three starts and totalled 706 minutes before departing for England.

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars said of the club’s new signing:

He’s got loads of quality – signing for Barcelona from Braga shows what potential he’s got. He’s 21 and has played quite a lot of games in La Liga, so we think he’s ready for the Premier League.

Playing Style

On Trincao’s style, Sellars added:

He’s a really exciting player. It’s an area we’d like more competition, in terms of wide players. I think the fans are going to enjoy watching him play, he drives with the ball well and has good creativity. We’ve watched him a lot, especially over the last couple of months, so he’s been on our radar for quite a while.

He’s a player who drifts past people and he has a great change of direction when he’s moving with the ball. He has great speed over two or three yards, to change direction and get away from people, can score and create, and is an exciting player.

The technical director also believes that Wolves’ strong Portuguese connection can help the new midfielder acclimatise quickly.

He’s a player who has good experience, a good pedigree in terms of club and international games he’s had, so he’s certainly a player who is going to add quality to the squad.

We have a large Portuguese contingent and they look after each other well but are also integrated in the whole group. They’re really hard-working, with a good mentality, so I’m sure he’ll integrate well and settle in quickly.

With the manager’s Portuguese background, he knows him and speaks very highly of him, so he’s a player we’re very excited to be bringing to the club.

That connection should be particularly strong with the injured Pedro Neto (£6.5m), who hails from the same town as Trincao.

“So, I met Trincao in Vianense, our hometown. We were friends for a long time, I played with him at Braga too, I have been with him for a very long time. He’s a very good friend of mine and I hope to see him soon because it was a good signing, and he will help us a lot with his quality.” – Pedro Neto

The Statistics

In his breakout league season at Braga, Trincao scored on eight occasions and provided six assists over 1,575 minutes.

That equated to an average of 0.80 goals plus assists per 90 minutes. Trincao also managed 2.63 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20, while hitting the target with 41.3% of his efforts.

Above: Trincao’s average of 2.63 shots per 90 minutes in 2019/20 was better than any of Wolves’ midfielders managed last season

Over limited playing time at Barcelona, the winger averaged 0.64 attacking returns per 90 minutes. That bore out in the form of three goals and two assists over 28 La Liga appearances, which included just three starts.

On Trincao’s Nou Camp showings, ESPN’s Barcelona correspondent Samuel Marsden told the Express & Star:

He was here for a year. In the second half of the season, he started playing less but it wasn’t really through anything he had done himself. A formation change went against him. Barca switched from the usual 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 around February and then stuck with it for the rest of the season.

Before that, he was getting a lot of playing time and coming on in every game – and not just for the last five minutes, but half an hour or 40 minutes most games. Until that switch, we’d seen a player with a lot of talent, playing from the right and cutting in on his left.

The Prospects

As at Barcelona, Wolves’ formation under Lage could have a big impact on Trincao’s pitch time. On the new manager’s tactics, A Bola journalist Rui Miguel Melo explained:

He enjoys wide players but the wide players in this tactical approach are the full-backs. He likes to have his wingers cut inside.

That type of approach could suit Trincao, a player noted for his dribbling skills and propensity to drift centrally for shooting opportunities.

On those attributes and playing-time issues at Barcelona, Marsden added:

He had a couple of good moments – at Real Betis when Barca came back to win 3-2, scoring the winner late on which was a really nice goal. That was a left-footed curling finish and he scored two goals against Alaves as well.

The problem that he had was those moments were too few and far between. He took a long time to score his first goal and have a real impact in the final third. It’s always difficult, though, when you’re coming to a new city, especially a club as big as Barca – during Covid – and playing alongside Lionel Messi.

He was just starting to click, really, but that formation change came and he disappeared through no fault of his own. He’s great at dribbling at players – picking it up deep and going past two or three. He just ran out of the options in the end with the bodies ahead of him and the change of formation.

With Neto sidelined going into the new season and doubts over the fitness of Daniel Podence (£5.5m), Trincao may have a smoother path into the first XI than it might otherwise have been. Marsden, as with Sellars, believes that the young attacker can make an impact in England’s top division.

He’s got the potential to be really good in the Premier League. For him to convince Barca to spend 30m Euros on him, he’s obviously got something about him. He’s still young, so it’s hard to put too much weight on his shoulders, but he could be a really good signing.

There a lot of factors at play, especially with Wolves having a new manager. But he’s going into a squad with a lot of Portuguese players who will help settle him, having been with the senior national side a few times. It may be easier for him at Wolves, where there is perhaps less pressure and scrutiny than in Barcelona.

Having been priced £0.5m more than Podence and at the same tag as Adama Traore, it appears that Trincao’s reputation has preceded him at FPL towers.

He is part of a mid-priced midfield bracket stacked with Fantasy talent, competing with players such as Leeds wingers Raphinha (£6.5m) and Jack Harrison (£6.0m).

The ideal situation for FPL bosses would be seeing Trincao immediately make Lage’s first XI for opening fixtures against Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Manchester United (H).

From Gameweek 4, Wolves’ games take a turn for the better. If Trincao is a fixture in this new iteration of the Molineux outfit, he could graduate from the watchlist to the cusp of our FPL squads.

Why all the Raph love? 3/4 tough opening fixtures. GW5 on yes, great option.

FFS thing when you look at overall ownership.

Much less convinced than most on here - I actually held him more or less throughout last time. Plenty of returns but they - from memory- dribbled in mostly and featured lots of assists, odd goals, an unfeasible number of blown assists by Bamford and the overriding impression that Jack Harrison was probably the one with an eye for goal.

On a list but far from essential for me - good 6.5 material.

Mason Mount and his 7.5 starting price in Chelsea’s attack is a good way to think of Raphinha at 6.5 in Leeds’ attack:

Since Raphinha’s first Leeds start (GW9-38)
        - Mount - 26 starts, 3 subs - 5G 4A
        - Raphinha - 26 starts, 1 sub, 6G 9A

        Goals scored last season:
        - Chelsea: 58
        - Leeds: 62

They’ve made a genuine mistake with Raphinha

The main things are (aside from his ridiculous price)

      - Didnt join Leeds until GW5
      - Didn’t get his first start until GW9
      - Didn’t start to produce consistently until GW14
      - Got 14 returns in next 22 appearances GW14-38

      Regarding his “Poor” fixtures:

      - GW1 - Old Trafford - Raphinha double returned there last season (Man Utd defensively weaker at home when the onus is on them to attack - conceded as many as Fulham & more than Southampton & Sheffield)
      - GW2 - Everton - Raphinha scored in both games against Everton last season
      - GW3 - Burnley - Leeds scored 5 in two games vs. Burnley last season (Raphinha also returned vs them)
      - GW4 - Liverpool - Leeds scored 4 in 2 games vs. Liverpool - including 3 at Anfield with VVD & Joemez playing
      - GW5 - Newcastle - Raphinha got a goal, assist & baps in his last game vs Newcastle

Rather than Raphinha (which I totally understand) the thing that was a bit jarring for me personally when the fixture list was released was the instant FFS rush to Everton

They have Leeds away, Brighton Away, and Villa away in the first 5 weeks - all 3x teams are darlings of FFS defences (and pretty rightly so imo - those defences all have FPL merits, even if Villa overachieved defensively & Brighton equivalently underachieved)

Throw in Burnley (who are also a great FPL defence at the right times) in the first 5 GW's as well

They also scored 18 goals in the second half of the season (17th in the league on goals scored) and I'm just not sure we should be eagerly waiting for DCL to snap out of the run he's on - having scored just 5 goals in Everton's last 27 matches

Digne I'm more ok with though as 5.5 is fair game for his FPL previous and Rafa will possibly be more organised defensively than Ancellotti...

But a single Southampton goal in GW1 (maybe from a Danny Ings playing himself into the shop window for his contract expiry, or a Vestergaard header from a set piece) is all it takes to turn the Goodison crowd on Rafa & the whole thing is off to a disaster start

Felt sure you'd be a round with this post 🙂

Not disputing he's a good option but I think if you tried you could make an equal case for Maddison and Barnes at 0.5 more expensive. He's not the only fish in the sea at the price point.,

Not doing this from stats but just memory but suspect it holds up. Maddison did nothing in weeks 1-5 or so. Then got fit and nailed. Gelled with Barnes and hit a return of 66% (ie 18 from 24) for the next 20 matches with loads of goals and not just assists, Got crocked and didn't get up to speed the he returned.

Central to a "Champions League" level attack

That raises the question why the insistence on Raph over Barnes and Maddison. On the basis of the last season with Raph over Barnes for instance you are saving 0.5 for the probability of an assist over the probability of a goal.

Max does like to roll up all returns into overall assists - he did this last season with Vardy - but goals aren't just one point more they are often bap heavy too.

Not arguing Barnes is de facto better but do think he's part of the same conversation - not least with better fixtures.

Is Barnes even nailed? We don't know if there's a place for him in the 3-5-2, if Rodgers will be switching it up with him in and out of the side. Greater tactical flexibility for Leicester is worse for FPL managers.

Was completely nailed really before he got crocked - missed two starts which was par the course last season - even Nacho missed a start after he went on his run

Iheanacho wasn't a factor before he got injured, now they've added Daka to the mix, three very capable strikers seems a to be a move towards a 3-5-2 and I don't see a place for him in that formation. Rodgers will switch it up of course and involve Barnes but wouldn't consider him anywhere near nailed at the moment.

Think Vardy is more dispensable than Barnes in all honesty.

Easy to forget how good Barnes was before he got injured - stayed fit and he could well have been the one who missed the pen at Wembley.

                        Everyone gets dropped sometime

The signing is a clear pointer to a Vardy replacement. He was frankly fairly cack in front of goal last season when you strip out pens and that form stretches back into 2019/20 too.

Want him to continue forever - an FPL hero of mine as I've had him for pretty much all his good times in the last 3 seasons - never afraid to move early for him but he simply isn't the same player nowadays.

Rodgers loves him too. Fact is though Barnes, Vardy, nacho, Daka are competing for two spots. I guess they will rotate throughout the season and form will dictate who plays

I wonder now whether it’s going to be Barnes, Vardy, Nacho, Daka, Perez competing for three slots effectively from here on

Brodge was starting Barnes and Perez either side of Vardy for the first 5 games last season, I could feasibly see him trying two of Vardy, Barnes, Daka either side of Nacho, with the fullbacks/wingbacks providing width

Or even Vardy and Nacho in a two with Barnes left wing and someone more defensively minded on the right side etc

Can feasibly see him squeezing in 3 of Barnes, Vardy, Nacho, Daka each game with them being his 4x strongest attackers

I’m actually a huge Barnes fan btw, hence starting with him GW1 last season,

The double return vs Burnley was superb, but I had to sell due to the early quiet form he went through

GW3-14 was not a good time for him with 10 blanks in 12 gameweeks

It’s the injury recovery and match fitness that’s key for him I think - I’m going to side with Nacho initially & see how long it takes Harvey to get back to his Barnestorming best

                  (I’ll get my coat)

I too might need up ducking him early because of Nacho - not sure about that strategy as I love both of them individually.

Barnes and Nacho will be a hell of a double up for 14.5m at times this season

Ridiculous value - prefer them both to Maddison but he could be great too, just has very lean spells in his locker the little scamp

Definitely onto something here I've suffered both sides of Maddison and Barnes, and Raph - so far - looks the dependable option.

Overthinking - or perhaps just oversimplifying - it, for me it sort of comes down to the choice of dependability to upside right now

            Woefully inconsistent
            Not nailed
            Lost set piece duty

            Raphina over Maddison all day.

Barnes is much more appealing if he's starting but it looks like it might be him vs iheanacho for a starting spot.

I’d still prefer Raphinha with no European distractions and a lower price to be honest

Barnes & Maddison both look great, but uncertainty over both with Barnes return from surgery and Maddison’s ability to disappear for long periods, plus Nacho is my weapon of choice from Leciester initially

Raphinha has never blanked more than 3 games in a row either which is a useful trait in an FPL asset

I started with Barnes last year and he had a long lean spell before the form eventually kicked in prior to injury, but if he looks fit and is firing he’ll end up in an awful lot of teams

Injury a big concern of course and all this is preseason dependent.

But as it stands I'm on Barnes over Raph probs - did Raph for 20 matches or so last season and feel like a change of scene 🙂

            Easy enough to switch.

Barnes is a good pick anyways, he’ll cause a lot of panic on here when he finds his feet as he’s just that good, his directness is terrifying

Definitely one to monitor brought ore-season

But he’d very much be an accompaniment to Raph for me (Behndia in that role currently) rather than a replacement

ideal situation is a Buendia > Barnes transfer after a few weeks if Harvey is looking untroubled physically

Agree on DCL; if both Digne and Rodriguez weren't playing, he didn't return often iirc. Good finisher but needs feeding, so if a team bullies James, which I think many could be easy to do, they cut the odds on DCL doing something drastically.
Also not sure James would get the same license to do what he likes under Benitez.

Because he's underpriced. He looks good for at least last season's 4.4 PPG with some room for improvement. As for whether he starts strong that's a lottery but if your team has a 6.5 mid slot he looks better than the alternatives.

Jota is so damn tempting. Those fixtures are incredible - Norwich, Burnley, Leeds, Palace and Brentford in the first 6 is an insane run. The minutes however are a major issue. If he starts he's probably getting hauled off at 60~ anyways for whoever misses out, and who knows how many starts he'll actually get with Klopp unwilling to play the 4-2-3-1. But when he starts... He should kill it.

Really feel like the fixtures demand a Liverpool triple up, a team I expect to do much better and a dream fixture run but the question is who to get. Doubling up on a defense that has been shaky since 19/20 post restart concerns me, otherwise I'd be on Robertson.

If he was guaranteed sufficient minutes, he'd have 90% ownership. The price reflects the uncertainty. I'm definitely tripling on Liverpool - like most, I'll have Salah and TAA; the wiggle-room is over the third option - Robbo, VVD or Jota.

    Team with BB strategy GW1:

    Sanchez, Raya or Bachman,

TAA, Coufal, Targett (2x 4,5 defenders)

Salah (C), Bruno, Sigurdsson, Raphina, Bissouma,

    DCL, Watkins, Tony

    Thoughts?

I wouldnt BB with Bissouma. Have to sacrifice Sigurdsson or Trent, other than that, it looks set.

Shaw will return to training on Aug 1.

    Don't think he'll start GW1

That’s 2 weeks full training to get up to speed, may not start but I certainly don’t think you can rule it out
