FPL team guide 2021/22 – Crystal Palace: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Crystal Palace.

It is the end of an era at Selhurst Park, with Roy Hodgson’s departure as manager preceding 11 first-team players effectively leaving the club after contracts ended – though Christian Benteke (£6.5m) and Joel Ward (£4.5m) did pen new deals this summer.

The Eagles were relatively comfortable in their bid to remain in the Premier League last season, finishing 14th on 44 points.

Despite being thought of as defence-first unit under Hodgson, only relegated side West Brom (76) and Southampton (68) conceded more goals than Crystal Palace (66) in 2020/21.

The New Vi-era

If Hodgson was a defensively-minded coach, the signs are that new manager Patrick Vieira will focus more on attack.

However, his Nice side were based on possession and being hard to break down rather than any sort of offensive verve.

You can read a full profile of the former Arsenal midfielder via the link below:

Crystal Palace attacking statsTotalRank v other PL teams

Shots in the box22418th
Shots on target13116th
Big chances4619th=
Expected goals (xG)34.4919th

The attacking numbers from last season will not make for pretty reading in Vieira’s Palace in-tray.

One positive in terms of going forward was that penalty taker Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best goalscoring campaign in 2020/21, netting on 11 occasions including two spot-kicks.

Just three of those were scored from January onwards, however, with the Ivory Coast international missing a month’s action in February due to injury.

Zaha logged just two regular assists over the campaign, though did rack up an ‘expected assists’ (xA) figure of 3.85.

Creative design

Palace’s top assister (eight) from last season was Eberechi Eze (£6.0m), who will not be back in action anytime soon after rupturing his Achilles in May.

Eze created more chances than any other Eagles player last season but some context is needed: his minutes-per-key pass average (60) was inferior to 50 other Fantasy midfielders.

Recruitment is, unsurprisingly, going to be one of Vieira’s biggest tasks during pre-season. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said on July 4:

We have a lot to do to prepare in the coming weeks and I look forward to working closely with Patrick and Dougie (Freedman) in bringing in some new faces to help us all to a successful season.

One new face already in the door is Michael Olise (£5.5m). In 46 Championship appearances for Reading last season, the attacking midfielder scored seven times and notched 12 assists.

“I had a conversation with the manager and he was talking about how he sees me in the team: the plans, the development and the vision for the club. It’s very good, so I thought it was a good fit.” – Michael Olise

With a paper-thin squad and a lack of creators at the moment, Olise could be expected to make the Premier League step-up from the off at Selhurst Park.

“I think [my role] is to make him do what he’s doing best: enjoying his football on the field, scoring goals, going forwards and playing with personality. He’s got that in his locker.

“I think it’s important to refresh the squad: to bring some new faces, to bring young talent to this football club. This is a really good signing for us. Of course, there will be more signings coming.” – Patrick Vieira

I reckon I'll go without to begin with. I know I'll want him at some point whether he's at City or Spurs, but to begin with there's a lot of value upfront with better fixtures + rested.

He's probably going to be my WC lynchpin

I think Havertz will start 90% as CF for Chelsea this year and have a blowout of a year and make his price look silly.

Im not mad on Waktins , Watford will not be easy ( They have a decent chance of keeping Villa scoreless i think) and then he is a transfer waiting to happen.

Pukki at 6 mil with pens along with Toney at 6.5mil is worth the risk for the money saved.

Im still however unsure on Stones / James

Not sure how Watkins is a sell if he blanks in one week? I prefer Son over Havertz, even for 1.5m more. Nice to be different though, dont change it.

No, sorry i meant from week 4 i dont like to have to book a transfer to move him.

Dont want to make any commitments for future transfers (which i meant Watkins looks like, can of course be wrong).I also dont like paying 7.5mil for a striker not on pens without a certain playmaker role for now (grealish)

Also the Havertz or Mahrez combo if needs be can become Son + Another in week 3 if necessary

I'm unsure on Stones/Digne med-term. I know I'll want City & Che def at some point, but I think it's worth being patient to see how they lineup.

Agree with your points on Havertz. I'll add Werner, who I also think will improve this season. Won't be getting him day 1 though. I think the whole Che setup will improve with Tuchel.

Watkins I'm willing to ride with. Fixtures are decent. I'm not expecting braces for the price.

I'll take one calculated punt in my squad; Toney for the early fixtures, then Pukki for Nor good fixtures

I agree, but i think Brentford will be way more attacking than people currently think.

Plus Toney and Pukki have pens and I have a feeling Norwich will also surprise people initially at least.

I haven't changed my side since the day the game opened. When there are some new facts on the ground that should change my opinions (e.g. seeing how teams actually line up in a game where they are using what we can expect to be their usual starting XI), then it will be worth changing my team.

So many people are acting like you have to react all the time to rumours and things, as if there were price changes during pre-season that you have to beat.

      Absolutely

You can’t take a centreback of that calibre out of a bottom half team & not see impacts

Leeds were desperately trying to get Brighton to sell White last season, and he had a great season for Brighton

Lamptey’s appeal is his attacking threat though so still merits in him

It’s Sanchez (and Dunk at 5.0) who I’d be more wary of now

Dier could be the AN Other as could Coady. Not seeing they are worse than White really.

Not a fan of rotation - I'd much prefer to have one and stick with him and then a back up as first bench.

Brighton and Leeds actually rotate quite poorly for home and away. Both Leeds and Brighton were home defences last season. Lamptey could as easily blast off away as at home

Disagree. At BRI he was held back to let Dunk and Burn go up for set-pieces.

With David Luiz gone he could be ARS's main target man in the box at set-pieces.

Been tinkering to get draft if Kane goes to City. How is this as team with TAA Bruno Salah Kane? Means only 1 realistic bench cover

    Sanchez (Foster)
TAA Coufal Targett Lamptey ( Ayling)

    Kane Toney ( Obefemi)

Pepe scored 5 in the last 3 games of last season. Surely Arteta will give him a better chance this season. His stats are really good too. Arsenal fixtures turn very nicely after GW4.

Yeah maybe. No reason to start with an Arsenal player imo. We can use the opening three GWs to assess Pepe, Saka, ESR, Tierney and White.

    Quick Tekkers note

He is the one Palace player worth having on a watchlist imo. Not a week 1 selection but one to monitor.

I ditto comments/stats above. I'll add this rider. I picked him quite early last season not just because he was hitting the target he looked confident and was taking chances on. There is still a good forward in there. Don't think he's any worse a choice than any other 6.5 forward.

Palace fixtures? Well when he started scoring towards the end last season it wasn't really on the back of a positive fixture run. Palace had a horrid run in.

He only started to perform again when his contract was ending. Some players are like that.

I expect him to go back to being crap again now he's got the deal.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

        One possible interpretation

He might of course have got a better contract had he scored more goals!!!!! Not sure I know many forwards who try not to score either come to that. You are also missing the fact that his contract was renewed previously when he was scoring precisely no goals. But I suspect you already have your preconceived notions here.

And well you can't fake confidence and he looked confident for the first time in yonks.

Think either the keeper(s) or a defender probably money well spent. I can see why you might want to avoid a double up and, I have my own reservations about Lamptey - flattered to deceive last year, before long injury.

I think you are overthinking it. DCL will be the no.1 striker for a team that will almost certainly improve on last season. Will score consistently throughout the season. Benitez has already talked about the supply line to him. As an Evertonian he’s in my team.

With Ancellotti gone why you so sure that team will improve ?

My view is that Ancelotti, when he first took the job, thought he had a squad that needed work, but had potential. As the season progressed he realised that potential was not as high as he thought and he would have to do a lot more work to get them to where they wanted to be.

I also think the end of season loss to Sheffield Utd was a tipping point as that was a poor loss and Everton were pretty much everything Ancelotti did not want them to be.

As soon as a chance to bail came along he took it.

Yea I do think that. He just seems so confident and strong. When going more expensive you lose the save points and bonus. When going cheaper you lose too many clean sheets.
He is a sublime keeper and even better fantasy option.
I haven’t checked everything but he’s probably up there with the best points per million player and I expect him to get around 165 this season.
