FPL team guide 2021/22 – Crystal Palace: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Crystal Palace.

It is the end of an era at Selhurst Park, with Roy Hodgson’s departure as manager preceding 11 first-team players effectively leaving the club after contracts ended – though Christian Benteke (£6.5m) and Joel Ward (£4.5m) did pen new deals this summer.

The Eagles were relatively comfortable in their bid to remain in the Premier League last season, finishing 14th on 44 points.

Despite being thought of as defence-first unit under Hodgson, only relegated side West Brom (76) and Southampton (68) conceded more goals than Crystal Palace (66) in 2020/21.

The New Vi-era

If Hodgson was a defensively-minded coach, the signs are that new manager Patrick Vieira will focus more on attack.

However, his Nice side were based on possession and being hard to break down rather than any sort of offensive verve.

You can read a full profile of the former Arsenal midfielder via the link below:

The attacking numbers from last season will not make for pretty reading in Vieira’s Palace in-tray.

One positive in terms of going forward was that penalty taker Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best goalscoring campaign in 2020/21, netting on 11 occasions including two spot-kicks.

Just three of those were scored from January onwards, however, with the Ivory Coast international missing a month’s action in February due to injury.

Zaha logged just two regular assists over the campaign, though did rack up an ‘expected assists’ (xA) figure of 3.85.

Creative design

Palace’s top assister (eight) from last season was Eberechi Eze (£6.0m), who will not be back in action anytime soon after rupturing his Achilles in May.

Eze created more chances than any other Eagles player last season but some context is needed: his minutes-per-key pass average (60) was inferior to 50 other Fantasy midfielders.

Recruitment is, unsurprisingly, going to be one of Vieira’s biggest tasks during pre-season. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said on July 4:

We have a lot to do to prepare in the coming weeks and I look forward to working closely with Patrick and Dougie (Freedman) in bringing in some new faces to help us all to a successful season.

One new face already in the door is Michael Olise (£5.5m). In 46 Championship appearances for Reading last season, the attacking midfielder scored seven times and notched 12 assists.

“I had a conversation with the manager and he was talking about how he sees me in the team: the plans, the development and the vision for the club. It’s very good, so I thought it was a good fit.” – Michael Olise

With a paper-thin squad and a lack of creators at the moment, Olise could be expected to make the Premier League step-up from the off at Selhurst Park.

“I think [my role] is to make him do what he’s doing best: enjoying his football on the field, scoring goals, going forwards and playing with personality. He’s got that in his locker.

“I think it’s important to refresh the squad: to bring some new faces, to bring young talent to this football club. This is a really good signing for us. Of course, there will be more signings coming.” – Patrick Vieira

I think there's more certainty of starts with Wilson. So he edges it for me for a season start pick of the two. I do think there are better options than Wilson though, in that price range.

I'm starting with Wilson due to low ownership, pens and a kind run of fixtures for the first half of the season. Not much love for him on here understandably but he's a shout over Nacho and even Watkins for me.

I guess as a bit of cover for AWB but seems funny that trips would want to play second fiddle somewhere

Could be used as a Marcos Alonso type where he plays the easier games to utilise his crossing and set pieces with less pressure on his defensive attributes

Trippier can play left back or right back. So giving support to both flanks. Reports Wan B could be used on the right of a back 3.

I did not watch Arsenal much last season and I want to know more about ESR as a potential pick.

Who does he rotate with? Projected lineups on this site show him as their CAM but does he take up any other positions in the midfield? Were his minutes limited at all by injury? Does Arteta favor him and do you think he will he get starts to begin the season? Does he typically get through a full 90 min? Are Arsenal looking to sign any players that would push him down on the pecking order?

    Thanks for any insights!

Arsenal fans would know better than me but he looks like he's first choice for the no.10 role atm. I'm not starting with him but FPL might've gotten this one wrong and underpriced him

      1. PrestigeWorldwidewidewide..…
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yes I'm wondering about it. Might want him as a 5th mid to rotate with a defender and switch between 3.5.2 and 4.4.2

    2. noquarternt
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

It’s difficult to say, if no one else gets signed he’d be fairly nailed as the 10 in the 4231, which at his price is a steal. Odegaard was there as well last time.

Any formation changes and he’s likely one of the first to go though…

At 5.5 he’s going to be in my team pending no serious incoming transfers.

3 at the back was always a possibility, especially earlier in the season. But I’d say they’re pretty settled with 4231 (from the end of last year)

Rumoured to have been given the No10 Shirt, will sign a new long-term contract imminently.

Arsenal are linked with Maddison which would certainly have an effect on ESR’s minutes if the deal went through.

Thanks for the comments all, I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on him this preseason. Thinking about a lineup like this:

      Sanchez 4.0
      TAA Shaw Coufal Fofana Coady
      Salah Bruno Grealish Raphina ESR
      DCL Nacho 4.5

He is comfortable across the front three or in attacking midfield, basically any position. He's quite a roaning presence.

Lats season he was more on the left, but sometimes drifting over to the right. But with no Odegaard or replacement, he's likely to spend more time centrally, especially since Pepe, Saka and Martinelli are quality wide players, with Nelson and Auba available for the wings as well.

That said, in the two friendlies so far, ESR has spent time behind the striker and centrally in midfield, but was also spending a lot of time on the wings again (based on highlighs). Mostly this was on the right wing and right half-space, but as I say he's comforatble filling any space. A real Croyden de Bruyne.

I disagree with Noquarternt that he would likely be the first to leave the field given a formation change. It would be very hard to choose from him, Pepe, Saka and one of Auba and Laca. Auba hasn't been in form for quite some time, and ESR has played false 9 a couple times last season I think, while ESR was also preferred to Pepe since 26 December 2020. It's just that Pepe seems to be picking up his game now, which gives ESR more competition.

There doesn't seem to be any obvious reson why ESR could play the Ceballos role next to Pepe in some games too. A lot depends on transfers.

I would say that if no CAM is signed, he's an absolute steal. Gets in the box, unafraid to shoot. Stylish, efficient and can pick out teammates in the box when Arsenal are trying to walk it in.

Chelsea being away to Arsenal and Liverpool in GW2+3 completely puts me of Havertz and Mahrez is £1m more expensive making Grealish the standout pick.
£8.0m is probably a fair price, although I do prefer to go for the undervalued players (Jota, Pepe, Raphinha, DCL).

    4. Pukki Blinders

I still can't get over DCL being priced at only £8.0m. He will be challenging for the golden boot this season. I would still pick him if he was £9.0m
Same goes for Watkins, I would pay £8.0m for him (especially if he is on pens) so feel like they are gifting me a free £1.5m for having the pair.

DCL trolled me so hard in the second half of the season.

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Personally I have a lot of hesitation on DCL

      - His Team - Everton scored 16 goals in the second half of the season (17th on goals scored)
      - His Form - DCL has scored 5 goals in Everton’s last 27 games
      - His Fixtures - he’s away to Brighton, Villa & Leeds in the first 5 gameweeks (all popular defences on FFS - for good reason imo)
      - He also has Burnley in the first 5 weeks - and we know what they’re like to break down on their day
      - he scored over 10% of his season’s points in 1 game - against 10 men west Brom who had Kieran Gibbs controversially sent off in the first half, hauls like that don’t come around very often

Bamford got 28 returns last season…. DCL has 36 returns in the last 2 seasons…

At the same prices, I’d personally rather have Bamford on penalties (in an attack that scores 63 goals) than DCL in Everton’s attack

Definitely. I'd add that without Jaime Rodriguez, Everton currently lack creativity in midfield to supply the attack. And with Richarlison off to the Covidlympics, he's got no strike partner.

      Maybe Barnes to Maddison.

I actually expect Mane to come back firing after a bad year. I think Liverpool got a bit complacent last year and what to prove themselves. I might be wrong though, and Bruno is the more obvious choice yeah 🙂 Yeah, Maddison, Buendia and Sana could also be alternatives. I just think the upside with Barnes is higher. Maybe better to wait and see after his injury.

Several trustworthy journalists stating they know Utd/OGS are considering this an opportunity to be more attacking. A switch to 433 with only 1 DM and two of Bruno, Pogba, VDB, etc is being discussed.

Sounds all in all fine wrt Shaw, but I'm not so sure you should expect more CS, tbh.

nah he's not a proper DM, more of an average CM...we need someone in the mould of Jorginho at Chelsea of Rice, someone to shield the defence and play simple passes etc. Neither Fred nor McTominay are that player unfortunately

Varane is one of the best in the world in his position...he will allow Maguire to step out with confidence...something he couldn't do with the likes of Lindleof beside him. I think he's the perfect accompaniment to Slabhead

How important is leaving 0.5 itb iyo?
It definitely gives breathing space and you don't have to rush a transfer because a sought after asset is going to rise in price leaving you 0.1 short etc.
I almost always invest the full amount at the start but this time I'm keeping that 0.5 I think.

Any thought on Cavani this season?

He's united's best striker who should get more service with Sancho there.

    Anyone own him last season?
I wonder how frustrating was he?

started 13 games, came on as a sub 13 times, subbed off 5 times.
    10 goals, 3 assist

    His quality isn't in doubt

Will his minutes reduce further now that he's a year older?

People have finally learned that Pep just isn’t worth it unless you get an injury bottleneck that clearly signposts who is going to start for an extended period

When Jack Harrison was their top scoring FPL asset last season it really says something about what Guardiola has done to Man City for FPL purposes

They weren’t even the super attacking Man City last season - when they were scoring 100+ here were more grounds for gambling… but they “only” scored 83 last season

Signing a striker is the big caveat

    How’s she looking?

    Sanchez/ Foster
    Tierney/ Lamptey/ Robbo/ TAA/ Coufal

    ESR/ Salah/ Bruno/ Buendia/ Gilmour

    Watkins/ Wilson/ Toney

Slightly worried about no raphina but I can always downgrade Toney or Robbo if he starts firing

I like it, expensive defence though.

Or a straight swap for Buendia works

Good plan if you have no other transfer needs.

Grealish (wat) to Grealish (NEW) to Grealish (BRE) and 2 FTs + .5-1.5M saved

I’ll be shocked if Grealish plays in GW1
