Top FanTeam tips from 2020/21 champion and €200k winner Josh Wooldridge

Sponsored by FanTeam

FanTeam’s season-long Premier League Fantasy game has launched for 2021/22, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for tips on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

We’re delighted that Josh is joining Fantasy Football Scout for the upcoming campaign and you’ll be able to read his thoughts on these pages over the coming year.

Josh’s first article is a beginner’s guide to FanTeam, although there is plenty of sage advice for those who have played the game before.

Hello, everyone. Since this is my first article for Fantasy Football Scout, allow me to introduce myself. I am Josh, one of Scout’s newest Pro Pundits, who will be specialising in FanTeam this year.

I was lucky enough to win the FanTeam 2020/21 Premier League season-long game in May, scooping an amazing €200,000 in the process, and still can’t quite believe it!

Since FanTeam is still a growing company, and may not be known to you all, I felt it would be useful to write a piece describing the basics of the game, and how it differs from the more well-known Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

What is FanTeam? Similiarities to FPL

FanTeam's £1m season-long Premier League Fantasy game launches

You’ll be pleased to know that a huge percentage of the game is identical to FPL.

You still have to pick 15 players – two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards – and you start with a £100m budget. One free transfer is allowed per week and can be rolled over.

There are also two Wildcards on FanTeam, one to be used in the first half of the season, and one in the second. A lot of the basic scoring is also the same, with some notable exceptions.

So far, so FPL.

What is FanTeam? Differences to FPL

The main differences between FanTeam and FPL are subtle, but significant in terms of decision making. The biggest contrast between the two games, in my opinion, is the lack of chips; in FPL you have your two Wildcards and your three additional chips but with FanTeam, you have just the two Wildcards.

So saving transfers and utilising your bench is much more significant on FanTeam, as your Wildcards should be held back, where possible, to manoeuver through periods of double and blank Gameweeks. I suppose in this regard, FanTeam is similar to ‘old school’ FPL before the chips were brought into existence.

On FanTeam, you get one extra point if your midfielder or striker completes 90 minutes. There are also no FPL-style bonus points, which actually means that the scores on the website are accurate as soon as the full-time whistle blows.

However, there are ‘impact points’ and additional rewards for shots on target – all of which are detailed below:

ActionPoints
Team ‘wins’ when a player is on the pitch+0.3
Team ‘loses’ when a player is on the pitch-0.3
Shot on target – forward/midfielder+0.4
Shot on target – defender+0.6
Shot on target – goalkeeper+1.0

Goalkeepers on FanTeam also score a lot differently, with 0.5 points awarded per save as opposed to the one point per three stops in FPL. Saves are therefore more important on FanTeam as they are rewarded more kindly.

Finally, players lose two points if they concede a penalty or a freekick which leads to a goal.

It seems like I have listed an awful lot of differences here but I hope you can appreciate that most of them are relatively slight. As a result, FanTeam can very much be played alongside FPL, even if you may make a few different picks by game (not least because some players are priced differently on each site!).

I would even go as far as saying the two games complement each other and your usual FPL articles, podcasts and Premium Members Area data will give you a lot of relevant information to help you make your FanTeam decisions, too.

For a £20 investment to enter a team, which gives you a chance to win a life-changing amount of money using your Fantasy Football skills, I truly cannot recommend the game enough.

FanTeam: Types of players to buy

I acknowledge that this is a lot to take in, so next, I want to talk about how all this affects the type of player you may want to bring in.

(Still obviously assuming Kane doesn’t go to City and get nailed in all our teams), how’s this looking still? 0.5m ITB. Cheers all, been a while! 🙂

I agree, maybe Nacho>Watkins with Shaw squeezed in there is the actual template.

Nothing wrong with it, had most of these players in my drafts.

Try one without Bruno, really helps spread the funds - obviously can massively backfire.

I like the look of fanteam. I think I’ll bake it my game of choice this season. I always preferred fpl before the chips were introduced.
I don’t suppose there’s any whats app groups or such like going for it is there?

Yeah..... some absolute bargains I think...

      Firpo 2.8m
      White 2.9m
Bachman 2.6m with the 1 point every 2 saves?
Raphinha 3.9m (when Harrison is 4.0m)

Looks solid - Dier and Fofana are slight doubts but pre-season would let you know and loads of other options at that price.

Mount pick isn't one jumoing out at me from the start of the season but he's a nice solid player...

      So, looks good.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

They're trying to offload Sanchez, so one of Dier or Rodon has to start, and 4.5 is a very tasty price indeed.
Mount's not terribly prolific, but overall it's a very solid draft.

Yeah one of them will be nice, I think I'd end up wanting to pay 0.5m more for Reguillon though.

Similar with White & Tierney I suppose.

I'd prefer Lamptey of all the 4.5m options just because he looks like getting involved... but obvious risks with him too.

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

I'm eyeing Regulion and Doherty - if they do well one will be in my squad as a weekly starter. But a 4.5 like Dier can spend time on the bench (esp GW1) while I assess.

Nb don't forget Dunk is the highest-scoring central defender. Lamptey is not alone at Brighton either.

Looks like Kabak might be off to Leicester to add another CB to the ranks. If he does go will that put those that have gone with Fofana off?

    1. RogDog_jimmy

      that's interesting.
i don't think fofana has enough attacking threat compared to equivalent priced defenders - was hoping that others picked him and he didn't do great...

There's definitely been some talk about Laporte getting moved on. Also, Cancelo was losing starts to Zinky down the stretch last year, and the Manchester Evening News went so far as to claim that Zinky was going to be the starting LB to start the season.

      Love Cancelo, trust Stones.

As a Liverpool fan who watched both games

      Elliot was fire
      Salah looked hungry
      Konate is a tank
      Tsimikas looked good
Matip still a little of the pace
Trent looked like he's not far of full fitness
Ox played false 9, started well but drifted out of the game, lot of talk about work on this in training
Gordon is definitely one for the future
Fabinho is so important to our team
      What does Milner drink?

It was basically 2 30 min training games so it means nothing

100%. Henderson being confirmed as #1 means Henderson AWB is locked in for me.

It's not double. They are different players. Not only different positions but not even interchangeable: one is a GK, the other is outfield. No reason to consider what team your other players are from when choosing GK imo, except if you want keep slots open for that team, given the limit of 3. I agree with Christina!

Well it is double, the fact they are from the same team is relevant when it comes to clean sheets, if one concedes the both do.

I'm taking party in a 'Lazy League' where you're not allowed to make any changes whatsoever (subs/boosts etc). Thoughts on the below for the whole season?

    DDG
    Robertson/Digne/Shaw/James
    Havertz/Salah/Torres/Saka
    Cavani/DCL
    Bench: Schmeichel, Toney, Sierelta

Gilmour third on bench after Toney

given that reports are that Henderson is the MU number 1 keeper I think you might not want DDG.

I might go for Watkins over Cavani due to assuming he'll start more often - and then use the money to upgrade your 5th midfield for when Torres or Havertz rest.

This seems a pretty fun way to play the game as a second team.

Looking at Wikipedia, his record doesn’t look particularly exciting, guess they have seen something in him

    New draft, thoughts?

I know the bench is weak but the wc could always bail me out haha

    Sanchez
    Fofana • Trent • Digne
    Salah • Sarr • Bruno • Son • ESR
    Antonio • Wilson

Bench: Fodder Gk • Ayling • Williams • Mebude

      I’ve had this same draft. I think…

Raphinha & Toney +0.5 is better than sarr and Wilson/antonio

Is anyone going to risk starting with Hendo at 5m?

I would really like to take the risk on him as I think he is now first choice but DDG is still lurking around annoyingly
