FPL team guide 2021/22 – Manchester City: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester City.

After a slow start to the 2020/21 campaign, the Citizens won the Premier League title at a canter and finished 14 points ahead of second-placed Manchester United.

City will undoubtedly finish in the upper echelons of the table this season too, though selecting their FPL assets that will gain the most minutes is a much trickier prediction.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

The Gundo-wagon

Cancelo finally delivers big haul as Gündogan shines in KDB's absence 2

Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) was one of last season’s most profitable bandwagons, having ended the campaign as City’s top league scorer (13).

He was pivotal to the run which smoothed City’s path to the title, as Guardiola’s outfit won 15 consecutive games from Gameweek 14.

That came after a 1-1 home draw with West Brom, in which the German midfielder also netted.

But Guardiola put the winning run that followed down to a return to Man City’s principles.

“After that game I had a feeling this isn’t a team I can recognise. I didn’t like what I saw. We could have won at Tottenham (GW9) and West Bromwich but I didn’t like [the way we played]. We talked with Juanma [Lillo], Rodolfo [Borrell], Manel [Estiarte], Txiki [Begiristain] and I said we have to come back to our first principle.

“We started to rebuild and reconstruct the team from that point. We had success in the past and [we had to] come back on our positional play, move the ball quicker, do more passes, stay more in position, run less with the ball.” – Guardiola speaking on February 12

Speaking to BT Sport in March, Guardiola added:

We adjusted something, to put more players in front of the box. But especially it was the day after the West Brom game (that we changed), when we drew 1-1 at home.

Those adjustments particularly benefitted Gundogan, who scored 10 times between Gameweek 14 and Gameweek 25.

However, another tactical tweak from Guardiola – along with a policy of heavy rotation – saw the Germany international become much less influential in the final third from Gameweek 26 onwards.

Above: a comparison of Gundogan’s xG shot maps

As can be seen from the above map comparison of the xG of Gundogan’s shots, the midfielder’s license to get into the box was somewhat revoked in the latter part of the season.

It must be said that he started all games in the first period (GW13 – GW25) versus six starts in the second period (GW26 – GW38).

With that in mind, Gundogan had 26 efforts in the box over those 13 starts while managing just six between GW26 and GW38. His xG also tailed off significantly, from 7.01 to 1.81.

Home alone

De Bruyne goes off with injury and Holeš emerges as budget enabler

This downturn in Gundogan’s numbers coincided with the return of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to the Man City XI.

That’s not to say that De Bruyne suddenly made his team-mate a bad Fantasy asset, it just saw Guardiola make another system change.

The Spaniard operated with a veritable ‘front four’ of De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m), Phil Foden (£8.0m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.0m), the Belgian occasionally operating as the nominal spearhead of the attack – something we may see more of in 2021/22 considering that Sergio Aguero has departed and a like-for-like replacement still hasn’t arrived.

That saw Gundogan move into a double-pivot midfield slot, alongside Rodri (£5.5m) or Fernandinho (£5.0m), rather than his previous position in Guardiola’s 4-3-3 – in which De Bruyne also featured before suffering a hamstring injury in late January.

Now £2.0m more expensive than last season’s starting price, Gundogan’s viability as an FPL pick will come down to Guardiola’s set-up once more.

Whether or not De Bruyne will be available for City’s Gameweek 1 opener at Spurs is anyone’s guess, after the Belgian admitted he played through torn ankle ligaments in his country’s EURO 2020 quarter-final defeat to Italy.

“For me personally it has been four or five weird weeks. But I especially want to thank the medical staff. It was a miracle that I played today because there was definitely damage to my ankle – a tear in my ligaments. But I felt responsibility to play for my country today. Too bad I couldn’t do more.” – De Bruyne speaking on July 2

His potential absence could also have knock-on effects for other City attackers. We can only hope for an official update ahead of Gameweek 1.

De Bruyne managed 18 attacking returns last season, in a campaign interrupted by injury and Champions League prioritisation.

That compared to a ludicrous 36 goals and assists combined in 2019/20, where the Belgian started at £9.5m before being hiked to £11.5m for 2020/21.

Despite a less than stellar Fantasy season, De Bruyne has earned another price increase to £12.0m this time around.

The underlying statistics, rather than the tangible FPL returns, point to the reason why: the premium midfielder had the best rate of both shots and chances created among Man City assets in 2020/21.

What's are people's thoughts on Torres getting a run up top for city if no Kane signing?

There is no way he is nailed. City have 4/5 players who could play false 9. Too risky for me. I think Mahrez is the most likely to start looking at previous minutes. Gundo/KDB/Torres/Jesus/Foden/Sterling have all played false 9 before.

The price increase given to Gundogan, paired with the drop in xG at the end of the season makes him a FPL no-go this year. The £7.5m mid bracket is punt/differential central (Pepe, Jota, Greenwood) no doubt one of them will make a mockery of the price but no guarantees regarding gametime.

But you are concentrating on his blanks. And there were lots of factors at play towards the end such as champions league rests etc.
What if Pep deploys him in a similar way to when he was unstoppable?

Well the stats in this article would suggest more blanks are to be expected City's end of season tactics are implemented.

Yeah 2 goals & 1 assist in City’s last 15 games was Gundo dropping back to what we normally got from him

KDB went off injured in the 59th minute vs. Villa in the second game of DGW19 and didn’t come back until Everton 6 games later…

In that spell of just over 5 games Gundo scored 7 goals & 1 assist 😆 (late pen vs Villa, braces vs w Brom, Liverpool, Spurs, assist vs Burnley)

Pep is far too unpredictable, but if he did use Gundo as a striker he’d be unstoppable for sure

I’d rather wait & see if he does that first though - be a week late rather than 5/10/20 weeks early

I don't think it is wise to start with KdB due to Euros / ankle issue. At GW8 there is a big fixture swing between Man Utd and Man City so swapping for Bruno at this point seems logical. GW8 - 13 have 5/6 'hard' fixtures, while Man City only have 2/6 one of them being home to Everton which I wouldn't consider 'hard'.

Kane over Salah feels so wrong for GW1 but will be content with it from GW2...just have to hope that Norwich over perform in GW1 and Liverpool have a slow start!

Imagine 2016 Dele Alli form for only £6.5m!
You could make a team with KdB, Kane and Premium defence with attacking cover for Liverpool, Spurs and Man Utd!
        Sanchez
        TAA, Robbo, James, Digne, Shaw
        KdB, Jota, Dele
        Kane, Cavani
        (Foster, 3 x £4.5m)

Also in attack I think there is potential. That 19 yo Brazilian striker J.Pedro at 5.5 if he nails that spot... Sarr also, great player Especially if they play in a 4-3-3 he will play from the left side going forward. Voted Best player of the season by his teammates and Watford fans alike.

Gundo getting 6 starts in the last 12 games highlights how little weighting we should put on that period for City. The league was over, the schedule was nuts, and he was resting for big cup games. Can't take much from that time.

With one Premier League game a week until GW14, rotation shouldn't be as much an issue until then. So the City we saw after the 1-1 West Brom game, who went on the incredible winning run, is the City we should see this season imo.

Per 90 or per minute stats are only useful when you see their game time increasing, otherwise they are very misleading. It assumes they play 90.

Also a cameo off the bench against tired legs inflates their stats. Playing against tired legs is a significant advantage.

If a player gets a large number of points per minute but only plays 65 minutes, he won't score many points.

Its best to start with players who are tried and tested in PL, especially wk 1.
We cant have all the players we want...eg Son, KdB, Bruno, Mo etc.
Start with Bruno and Mo. I reckon it's suicide to not at least own one of them, so it's easy to flog one for Son or KdB after wk 1.
Also easy to downgrade strikers to Toney or Pukki once things settle down.
Sooner or later you will want the likes of Taa, Shaw, Cresswell, Dinge, Dias etc so set yourself up in those price brackets.

Agree with this 100%. There are times to take risks in fpl, but the first 6-8 GWs aren't it for me. I'm going boring as possible, 100% nailed, not injury prone, and PL-proven are my three criteria. I'm not saying taking a risk on a e.g. Cavani, Mahrez, Toney etc won't pay off (and I can see myself owning all three at the start of the season), but I'll be looking to minimise variance early on. There's nothing worse than only fielding 10 players in GW 1 or 2 because you took too many risks (I have done this before).

I agree with most of it but I wouldn't dismiss the idea of having 1-2 promoted players in your team from the start. If they have shown to have played well in the EFL, they could take up the cheap price slots in your team.

Of course its possible to get get it right(Pukki last season). I think Buendia for example if a calculated risk worth taking.

...someone like Sarr I dont rate though. I would rather opt for Dallas @ 0.5m cheaper.

I actually quite like Sarr. He has that talisman vibe for Watford and possibly on pens. First 6 fixtures are pretty decent as well

I'm not sure on Dallas. There is always a possibility for him to fill in at FB/WB.

i think a lot of opinions on Sarr are warped by the brace against pool 2 years ago!

Meh, I think it's more that Sarr is a talisman with decent fixtures that has 8G 2A in his last 15 while potentially being on pens. For a 6M midfield enabler that's fine.

I would say start with two of Bruno , Mo , Kane or Son.
The fixtures do make sense for a Mo Bruno Start. Would have Son too but it ruins the team balance.

I've had option 1 in my draft for a while but losing interest in Mahrez. I feel Liverpool triple-up is a must for the start of the season and currently prefer Robbo's nailed mins over Jota until WC1

Which option would you go for?

    1. 4.5def + Mahrez
    2. Robbo + Buendia/Sarr/7.0m

    Bachmann Foster
    TAA Lamptey Ayling 4.0Def XXXXX
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Brownhill XXXXX
    Nacho Antonio Toney

Shaw & Digne. If I had to pick one it would be Shaw ( unless injured)

My second draft. What do you think?

    Sánchez-Foster
    Lamptey-Ayling-TAA-Stones-Coufal
    ESR-Gilmour-Salah-Fernandes-Son
    Watkins-Toney-Deeney

Deeney missed the majority of the second half of last season. Keep an eye on Pedro who may start ahead of him.

I'm currently sat in a draft that has Hendo - Sanchez as keepers, but for obvious spend related reasons I'm not keen. Would you prefer

    A) Hendo - 4.0
    B) Sanchez - 4.5

Not keen on 4.5 - 4.0 due to Covid

...related postponements and player isolations. Want two playing keepers. Cheers for any advice!

      Wouldn’t Hendo & 4.0 cause the same issue as 4.5 & 4.0?

As soon as i posted part two of my post i realised the mistake in my question! Fair point.

Currently looking to switch to two 4.5s but not seeing much value in many other 4.5s.

You would hope DCL has a chance?? He took a penalty for England a few months ago and it was a very confident and well executed one I remember!!!

James if he plays, otherwise you would think DCL or Digne. Hard to know exactly
