Can Raul Jimenez re-enter the mid-price FPL forward conversation?

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward pool is awash with appealing-looking mid-price options in the £6.5m-£8.0m bracket.

Ivan Toney (£6.5m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m), Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Patrick Bamford (£8.0m), Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Michail Antonio (£7.5m) all have double-digit FPL ownerships at the time of writing, with Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£8.0m) also among the tried-and-tested names in this rung.

Going under the radar somewhat is Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), who has plundered 52 attacking returns in 86 Premier League appearances to date and averaged a very respectable 4.9 points per match in doing so.

Now back in full training and clocking up the minutes in pre-season friendlies, the Wolves striker is the latest player to come under the radar in our ‘Sleeper’ series – a collection of articles on proven FPL performers who had a quiet 2020/21, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise.

2018/19: FPL REVIEW

Dallas at left-back as Bielsa shuffles Leeds pack for trip to Wolves

In his first season as a Premier League player, the striker ranked third among forwards for shots (111) and shots in the box (88) on his way to scoring 13 goals. Jimenez was further down the list for big chances (19), however.

The Mexican also created the fifth-most chances (42) among forwards and was joint-top with Callum Wilson for big chances created (13).

That saw Jimenez rack up the fourth-highest expected goal involvement (xGI) figure (19.19) behind Jamie Vardy, Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Wolves forward ended the season with 23 attacking returns, having totaled three Fantasy assists alongside seven regular ones.

2019/20: FPL REVIEW

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

Jimenez was at it again in the 2019/20 season, going one better as he produced 24 attacking returns.

He topped the shots charts for forwards in that season with 118 attempts, which was 17 more than nearest challenger Gabriel Jesus.

Jimenez was also first for shots in the box (93), although eight forwards registered more than his 23 big chances.

He was out in front for the creativity stakes this time, creating another 13 big chances for his team-mates.

Jimenez created 48 opportunities in total, second only to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino.

The striker landed in second on the xGI charts in 2019/20, with his total of 21.73 not far off first-placed Jamie Vardy (23.35).

In his curtailed 2020/21 campaign, Jimenez ranked fifth among all forwards for attempts (26) from Gameweeks 1 to 10 – the point at which he sustained his sickening injury.

Only four big chances arrived during that time, however, which placed him a lowly joint-16th among strikers.

2021/22: THE PROSPECTS

Can Bruno Lage make Wolves' attackers more appealing in FPL?

Having suffered a fractured skull in Gameweek 10 of last season, Jimenez returned to full training in July of this year as pre-season began.

His first kickabout in nine months came in the mid-July warm-up game against Crewe Alexandra, with the Mexican clocking up half an hour of pitch-time and putting himself about early on; always a good sign from a psychological perspective after such a traumatic incident.

Not only does Jimenez have to regain form and match fitness after a horrific injury, he has to do it under a new manager.

Bruno Lage could potentially be a tonic for Wolves’ attacking assets, however, with the former Benfica manager having a reputation for playing more offensive football than his predecessor.

Jimenez traditionally struggled for ‘big chances’ under Nuno Espirito Santo, although did offset that with his durability (he was an ever-present in the Premier League for over two years until his injury) and by being more creative than most of his positional rivals.

We will need a few Gameweeks to assess Lage’s impact and Jimenez’s match-sharpness but that marries well with Wolves’ relatively difficult opening fixture list of Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Manchester United (H), which gives us an audition period of sorts before the September international break.

The schedule brightens significantly from Gameweek 4.

If fully fit, Jimenez could certainly stake a claim for a spot in our squads among a stacked mid-price striker bracket, considering his proven FPL potential.

If Kane does indeed end up going to City which would u prefer,

A by a long way. Without Kane, Son will break his record haul of points and will shoot towards £12m in fpl. He will score more than all 4 of those names. Bamford scores more than Dele.

Possibly, but there's also an argument that the quality of Kane what be on the end of the chances he creates.

One of my most obvious and frustrating weaknesses as an FPL manager is captaincy picks.

I can't remember exactly the precise numbers, but last year I was only successful in captaincy picks around 40-50% of the time. The orevious season was similar.

Any tips on captaincy picks? Or is it just a lottery?

I've tried to pick mainly premiums, avoiding wildly differential captains (although I did have a few unsuccessful gambles last season).

Anyone had success with a permanent captain? Salah or Kane perhaps?

There was a brilliant community article many months ago that dived deep into this

IIRC, the ranking was fixtures, then FFS poll, then RMT, then permacap. Mostly premiums except when something obvious stands out

As a fixture fanatic myself (successful or not), my first 7 captains according to my main draft on https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/ are Salah, Salah, Iheanacho, Pépé, Salah, Salah and Iheanacho

Premium with fixtures. It's actually simple.

I suspect you get clouded by the captain polls, league rivals, expected ownership etc.

My biggest problem with this community is effective ownership etc. being scared of what other players might do. You win the game by scoring the most points possible. Effective ownership should never enter the equation IMO

        League rivals definitely influence me.

Same here, I always seem to get it wrong. Maybe if kane goes to city it will make the decision easy.

I think in my case I just tend to take too many risks. I enjoy trying to outsmart the community and picking a slightly left field choice (although generally stick to premiums) but over the whole season it rarely pays off. Best bet is probably just follow the scout poll and do your tinkering on your transfers. I may try the this year and see how it goes. But boring though.

I think captaincy should be scrapped, it would make every point matter.
With good\lucky captaincy pick some weeks you can brush over whole team being poor for example 30 points from captain plus lots of 2's & 1's still puts you even with someone who had decent returns (assists, goals) but bad luck with captain.

Up to half way through last season I was a captaincy ninja - semi respectable rank largely based on captains and then I lost my mojo completely.

Think I maybe went wrong by going for hauls over consistency. I'd take fixtures as paramount but I'd also weight chances of a single return highly. This means in practice being prepared to go against the poll and look at players such as Nacho on a blinding run of form with a decent fixture.

I knew making that comment, it would lead to an inevitable 'Arsenal are crap too, tee-hee-hee' comment.

But, thats not actually the point is it?

Son could move to up to ten teams around Europe who are -

        A.) Better than Tottenham.

B.) More likely to challenge or actually win silverware than Tottenham

He, for whatever reason, has chosen not to. He's chosen to stay at club unlikely to challenge for any serious silverware anytime soon. Hence, lack of ambition.

Alasdair Gold, Spurs mouthpiece saying Spurs are on the same stance as they were before - no intention to sell. Has the makings of a long, drawn out saga that could easily stretch into GW2 onwards. After all, Kane playing and hitting a brace vs Spurs first time around would be a lot of egg on a lot of faces. Levy is, of course, extremely stubborn.

This is the best part of the season and I don't mean to waste the fun of an unlimited WC as I did in previous seasons. There are so many what ifs out there and I intend to look at them all.

Next draft is a BB probs - unlikely to go that way but if you don't have Bruno there is a logic to it. Defo a BB squad could be put together.

No early Liverpool defensive double up is just about the only call I'ver made so far. When I do go there it will almost certainly be VVD who has been a decently better pick than Robbo for value

I quite see why it's popular and it's a fair call. I'm sceptical - for quite a number of reasons - about how good Liverpool defence will be early on and without those cs then 14.5 is too large a part of my week 1 budget.

Very much on radar but I'm going to hop on when/if cs start to roll in and be happy to be late on it. Part of my reasoning here is that all the cs sides (City Pool Chelsea even United Villa Everton) of the last 2/3 seasons have typically gone on cs rolls and not been consistent through the season. Form value trumps season value.

One of the interesting aspects of all those midpriced attackers is that a switch to premium defence is dead easy.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne
    Salah (C) Mahrez Jota Greenwood
    DCL Watkins Antonio
    ____
    Steele Lamptey Gilmour Manquillo

0.5 for future transfers (likely getting Cancelo in for Shaw / Digne)

I think the chances of Shaw starting the season are quite slim - but keep an eye out for updates. And I also think having all 3 of Mahrez, Jota and Greenwood is risky. I wouldn't say any of them are nailed at the moment.

Greenwood+ Jota + Mahrez is to much risk imo

    1 KDB assist = 1 Kane goal

KDB likely penos and set pieces and KDB is at a much better price point… easy switch to Bruno, etc.

Think he can match Kane at City…

U think Kane wont be on Pens if he goes? He's so much better at them than kdb

if Kane goes to City, there is zero chance he doesn't take pens... city are famed for their terrible penalty record and KDB has missed as part of that. He even turned down a penalty because he was too tired (that Sterling then skied).

      100% Kane would take pens.

KDB either refuses to take pens or misses them - and that’s when Kane’s not there

What makes you think he’ll take them if Kane arrived?

City need to recoup some of the fee, and get rid of 2 or 3 wage bills before they can complete the deal. Can see it going well past GW1 and up to TDD.

They might get it done before the window closes after GW3

Then Kane will break his leg during the International “break” and miss rest of season

      This is the way

Way too many issues here for me

      Hendo and sanchez seems overkill
Cancelo, chilwell, havertz, torres, foden, cavani all rotation prone

perhaps it's a bit risky but if Chelsea don't buy a striker Havertz will be nailed I reckon, Chilwell will be as nailed as it gets imo. Cavani should start the early games and is an easy downgrade

I do like the picks in isolation but just a few too many punts there. I have cavani, havertz, foden & james in my side but don't want to go with any more than than - 3 or 4, maybe 5 given your strong bench seems plenty

I like getting them slated...it makes rethink a little but I'm definitely gonna start with a high risk high reward sort of team...it's a game right...supposed to be fun right lol

Looks like complete & utter lunacy to me

(But that team is taking the piss tbh)

Kane draft. (with Timo in GW1 lol)

    Sanchez
    TAA Robbo Lamptey
    Salah Buendia Sarr Raphina
    Antonio Watkins Werner

    Subs: Foster, Ayling, Gilmore, 4.0

    4.0 in the bank
    Werner > Kane in GW2

Werner v Palace in GW1 just seems like the perfect punt.
Could be Vardy v Wolves instead

I appreciate Kane to City is probably just rumour at the moment, but the transfer silly season is hotting up! Bring it on.

like the idea, but don't think Werner is that guy. Chance he doesn't even start, like Vardy more, or even Aubameyang.

Yes Auba is a good GW1 Kane replacement, I like that specially because only 3.5% owned.
Just playing around with this draft, seems fun to me to start GW1 (again) with Werner, his ownership is also low at 6.5% (Vardy is 8.4%).
If I went with a plan like this, I'd probably aim for the lowest owned and best odds for scoring 2+ goals in GW1. Could indeed be Auba, good shout.

Havertz a way better call imo

I'm not paying too much attention at all to Euros form - hence no Shaw - but was interested to see Havertz and Werner for Germany pretty much replicating what they did for Chelsea. There's only one of them I'd pick to haul.

Agree, but he's not a FWD and it's a GW1 Kane replacement I'm looking for here. I appreciate this is very very hypthothetical and just nonsense at the moment. But I guess so much of this early planning is!

      Gilmour probs

Right now McArthur at Palace is in pole position for a starting spot but we are highly likely to buy/loan someone in to replace him. Shame in a way for FPL as he is the class of that field if you look at historic returns - he very much has goals in him.

Bissouma, Brownhill and Gilmour look the sensible options. I'll just go with the lowest owned.

A more exciting option might arise, but we will struggle to know who it is in advance.

This is how it will go. We all go with Gilmour. Another 4.5m scores in wk 1 or 2. We all go with that guy on wildcard. that guy never starts again.
