There isn’t much to champion in the Newcastle defence based on last season’s evidence.

United were in the bottom four for everything from shots allowed to expected goals conceded (xGC), with only relegated Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion keeping fewer clean sheets.

Aside from the obvious point about the modest quality of players at Bruce’s disposal, there were a number of significant reasons for the creakiness at the rear.

One factor was player unavailability.

Newcastle were the only Premier League club who didn’t have a single player banking 30+ starts (see above), with the constant chopping and changing at the back – mostly enforced by injury and a particularly damaging coronavirus outbreak at the club – unsurprisingly affecting the collective defensive displays.

First-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) started just over a third of the Magpies’ league matches, club captain Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) was missing for exactly half of the campaign and midfield shield Isaac Hayden (£4.5m) was bedridden by COVID-19 and then missed the run-in through injury.

Centre-half options Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett (all £4.5m) also had significant periods on the sidelines.

Another aspect is the ghost of Rafael Benitez.

Bruce has repeatedly made noises about moulding Newcastle into a more attacking unit ever since his appointment two years ago, in a desperate attempt to escape the shadow of his more-revered predecessor.

Benitez favoured a pragmatic approach with the limited squad members available, with Newcastle finishing among the top eight teams for fewest goals conceded in both 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Bruce’s fixation on putting his own stamp on the club has resulted in the Magpies shipping a combined 25 more goals in the subsequent two campaigns, with a Gameweek 30 formation switch last season his latest attempt to shake things up.

3-5-2: MORE ATTACKING, LESS SECURE

Seeing Jota in a few teams. Why are people seeing him hold down a starting berth? Have i missed somthing?

There's an expectation Firmino won't be ready to start the season. It's a short-term exploit.

irmino likely to miss start of season so Jota takes his place (Norwich then Burnley). Also Jota averages a goal every 123 minutes. The £5.0m saved on Salah can go a long way (could enable two form Kane/KdB/Bruno)...

Indeed. Huge chunk of spare cash. These things never seem to go well for me though esp when Salah then bags a hattrick to Jotas 2 pts.

Going without salah vs Norwich at the start of the season seems an unnecessary risk IMO.

Last season he played 70% of all the possible minutes (take into consideration also that he was a new player in the team), inlcuding 5 starts in a row at the end of the season. I don't know why people assume that he's going to be benched most of the time all of a sudden.

If you take his xG+xA per 90 minutes (0.66) and multiply by 0.7 you have expected goal involvement of 0.46 per GW. Quite good imho even if he still plays only 70% of the minutes. If Firmino is going to be rested at the beggining and Jota is sure to start, then it is a no-brainer for me.

Where does this stat come from? FPL website says he played 1106 mins last season which is less than 30% of the season. He also didn't start the final game of last season and didn't even come off the bench. I like Jota but this is all untrue

          I’d say it’s 70% of *jota’s* available minutes

(Not 70% of *liverpools* available minutes)

I.e. giving him benefit of the doubt for periods of injury

              How come? He played some minutes in every game he was in the squad: 10', 90', 12', 83', 20', 90', 89', 90', 17', injured for 15 games, 28', 90', 82', 29', 90', 81', 58', 79', 74', injured, injured, 1' (minutes of course). No way it's less than 50% unless I don't know about something.

Mane injury definitely helped him end of last season. Could you see him playing many minutes in first 3 this season ? Could he potentially play behind the striker. Alongside Salah, Fir and Mane ?

            • 7 Years

Yeah sure, 70% of the minutes when he wasn't injured (according to Transfermarkt that was 1112 minutes of 1620 possible). I didn't count the last game because he just returned from an injury and played 1 minute and Klopp said there is no need to risk him or something like that. He started 5 games in a row before he got injured and didn't play in the last 3 games.

Interestingly, Jota has 16 goals & 3 assists in his last 3,100 premier league minutes

Greenwood has 17 goals & 3 assists in his last 3,100 minutes (but obvs is 5 years younger)

But last season Jota got 9 returns from just 1,100 minutes tbf whereas Greenwood needed 1,800 minutes to get his 9 returns, and Jota’s minutes per XGi is much better as a result

But Greenwood could be in for a bumper season, no doubt

I would be bullish on Greenwood if only United didn't sign Sancho. Now his starts are going to be seriously hindered by Jadon's arrival imho.

I’m hoping he still gets lots of minutes in the front 3 covering for Rashford, Cavani & Sancho at times, he has the pace to play wide and the finishing to place striker, but obviously still a ridiculously young age - should get good experience again this year though

Possibly a future Cavani replacement longer term

    1. Andy_Social

No one's a must-have. In his case, whilst he's the highest points-scorer in FPL last season, his form tailed off towards the end and he had a subdued Euros. United are restructuring their squad and we don't yet know how that will affect Bruno tactically.

the must have players are the lundstrums, dallases, awbs, mahrezes, vardys, michus that make a mockery of their starting price tag

Don't think so, United had a record amount of pens last season. Would be crazy if they reach that number again, especially with new pen rules.

On the other hand, they've got another box-tumbler now.
FWIW I've dropped Bruno for Sancho to spread that 2.5m around. Bruno may well be top scorer again, but that doesn't make him the best value or a must-have necessarily.

We say that every year but they’ve been getting by far the most number of 50-50 decisions going their way for the past many years, and don’t see it changing anytime soon. Their penalty taker will always be good accordingly

      For me yes

I’d see him having a very realistic shot at 30-40 goal involvements in a team that had a very realistic shot at 150+ attacking returns for the season

(Tentatively assuming Man Utd score more than last year’s 73 goals)

Penalties, DFK’s, assists, the odd goal from play…

He has 48 returns, 54 baps & 22 cleansheet points in his last 49 starts/2 subs for a reason

Son Jota Barnes with a 4.5 in defence work?

Yeh the idea with Mane was the low ownership for the first two Norwich,Burnley then sell for maybe Son in week 3.

id love a Leicster attacker but who do you get?

I'm not against this, if you have picked your team with the first 3 or 4 weeks in mind why would you need to be switching players to anyone you aren't already aware of.

People say don't book transfers but what risk do you have with Chelsea. The latest blackbox showed that fixture difficulty doesn't really effect Chelsea defensively. So even if someone went out and signed an unknown player who scores a hat trick you could still make the move and it's not exactly like being stuck with Chelsea is the end of the World.

Reece James is very interesting - he got as close to nailed as you can get under Tuchel at the end of the league season, and is very attacking when he plays

CHO & Azpi are pains in the arse though, Tuchel is an awful bollocks for rotating

Hmm good spot, wasn't considering him but he really played most of the games towards the end of the season. Could be great value.

I'm still considering Chilwell, but these fixtures are not encouraging. On the other hand, with Man City they were the best defense since Tuchel came (don't remember exact stats so may be wrong about his one) and even if they keep CS in 3 games out of 6 and Chilwell gets an attacking return then it should still be worth it I guess.

I’ve got Chilwell in my current draft. I think there’s upside in picking a Chelsea attack minded defender (especially GW1).

    Keane over Digne for value?

There's the argument that no Siggi and James possibly will give Digne close to a set piece monopoly. Over against that is Keane is one of the main set piece targets - more so if Mina isn't in the equation. Good Digne could also mean good Keane?

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Just 0.5 difference unfortunately, would have tried Keane if he was 4.5

Not picking Digne as well until James leave.

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

        Yep

But it's the 0.5 in week 1 that buys you a 6.5 mid potentially as opposed to an obvious makeweight.

And I also quite like the 5.0 category in defence. They won't all stay at that price point but there are several options there that I can see being really good value. Not planning transfers but rationally I will make some and that's one area I can see myself making a switch relatively early.

      2. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

Should add that Keane matched Digne point for point last season and it's one of those price differentials that looks to be possibly out.

Mean to look into this as I while away the days before season starts but think CBs with aerial threat can be great value. Less sexy than the wingbacks of course.

At the deluxe end you have VVD who clearly beats Robbo for value historically but Dunk too (missing from your list) was the Brighton asset to be on if you went around BGW. Have previously had a lovely relationship with Saiss and a brief fling with Konsa.

I expect Slabhead to nut in a good few this season too. But at the end of the day, your wingback is going to return more frequently than your CB, so I'll still incline towards them.

I'd still take Digger, but if you really need that 0.5m, Keane is a good differential.
