FPL team guide 2021/22 – Southampton: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Southampton.

For a ten round spell after Gameweek 6 the Saints camped in and around the European places in the league table, even reaching the very top briefly, but consecutive defeats against Leeds United, Leicester City and Arsenal sent them back to lower mid-table where they remained throughout the second half of the campaign, dropping to 15th on the final day.

Co-incidentally, 15th is where Southampton are ranked on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-6:

Can they outperform that fixture difficulty and make the same kind of start as last year?

The Main Man

Approaching a new season, especially after one where most of the wheels finished significantly loose if not actually detached, you’d hope that at least the chassis of the team would be in good shape. In the driving seat there is the reassuring figure of club captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), the undisputed set-piece king of St Mary’s and a podium performer across the Premier League as a whole.

If he isn’t despatching a penalty or placing a dead-ball beyond any mortal goalkeeper’s reach he’s swinging in a threatening corner or laser-guiding a free-kick towards a gigantic centre-back.

Eight goals and seven assists combined with his record-breaking second consecutive ever-present season as a Premier-League midfielder reinforce why almost 10% of FPL managers currently have Ward-Prowse in their squads, but it’s at the sharp end of his pinpoint deliveries that Southampton’s problems begin to mount.

Picking Up The Set-Pieces

Both Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) and Danny Ings (£8.0m) are out of contract next summer and openly reviewing their options during this pre-season. Vestergaard will at the very least be late back to training after reaching the EURO 2020 semi-finals with Denmark and last season his head was on the end of 20 of the Saints’ set-pieces, almost as many as the rest of the squad combined. Ings was third on that list with seven and utility defender Jack Stephens (£4.5m), also with only a year to go on his contract, was fourth.

Saints Preserve Us?

If Vestergaard, who made 30 league appearances in the last campaign, were to move on that would leave Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) partnered with either Stephens or comparative newcomer Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m) in the middle of a defence that produced comfortably the worst deficit (-14.6) between expected and actual goals conceded of any Premier League side in 2020/21.

What do you think of this draft:

    Sanchez (Steele)
TAA - Coufal - Tierny - Robbo (Manquillo)
Salah - Bruno - Raph - Buendia (Harrison)
    Antonio - Watkins (Obafemi)

Pretty basic. Not much of a bench. Other than that it's pretty good.

Could downgrade Harrison for a better striker?

Only for Toney, but I like Harrison over him at the moment.

Looks really good. Given their amazing opening fixtures I’d be tempted to start with Targett over Tierney. Don’t know why by Tierney always feels like a risk to me.

I have him for first GW, then I switch to 3-5-2 with Tierny on the bench for the two tough fixtures and Harrison in. If he gets injured, then it's a easy switch to Dunk or Targett.
        Cheers!

Afternoon all! A repost. A, B or C in this team?

    A) Lewis, Coufal & Buendia
    B) Stones, Coufal & Smith-Rowe
    C) Dias, Lewis & Smith-Rowe

    Sanchez | Foster
    TAA | Robertson | Coufal | Holgate | Lewis
    Salah | Fernandes | Buendia | Soucek | Bissouma
    Watkins | Wilson | Toney

    Then finally,

    1) Is there a better 4.5 midfielder? Is Gilmour injured?
    2) Better 4.0 keeper?

According to rumours around Twitter (pinch of salt as always but supposedly from tier 1 Chelsea journo), Dortmund want to keep Haaland situation quiet until Donny Malen deal is fully done to avoid price going up. Chelsea going along with this but will be making 130m bid and if Dortmund don't accept will make same bid plus 20m in addons. Might sound a bit of a push especially as I normally look to Fabrizio for indication on any transfers and ignore random internet chatter, but I did find it a little odd that he waited until around 11.30PM on a Saturday night to tweet basically the same thing he said last week (that Dortmund don't intend to sell unless receive high price, know Chelsea are interested but no bid received).

In a way I feel like he'd help my current draft, I have no Bruno and Salah and have Havertz and Foden that might well be rotated more than I expected, so if Haaland ends up at Chelsea at around 11m I could keep Kane and have Haaland and then have a space for ESR and someone like Greenwood in midfield. Means an extra premium like everyone else anyway and I can be more assured of starts for those two than the other City and Chelsea options. All if, buts and maybes for now but I feel my team is more flexible than I thought previously

Hah indeed. Honestly nowadays I find it amazing when I about nearly any deal being done in the top leagues and only hearing about it for the first time when it's just about finished, incredible anything can be kept quiet these days (although these types of deals are still few and far between)

Sorry didn’t see your comment re. Brighton defence till now!

Webster’s very nailed at 4.5, Veltman will definitely play RWB while Lamptey is out. But when Lamptey’s back, I think it’s maybe 50-50 that he plays RCB anyway even with a new CB coming in (say, Nat Phillips from Pool). Might be worth the risk to get Veltman over Webster accordingly (I’m doing it), but that’s just my 2c 🙂

I don’t doubt that Chelsea want Haaland, lots of clubs want him - and Chelsea are one of the only clubs crazy enough to sign him for 70m more than he’ll cost in 10.5 months time

It’s the conjecture about “Dortmund want to keep it quiet” and “Chelsea are going along with this” etc etc

          Just complete speculation lol

              It is in my opinion.
To talk about football and try to predict teams\players form is one thing - we all do it all the time. It's as old as football itself.

But to come here and claim to have some insight of secret agreements is something completely different.

Again - It’s the conjecture about alleged secret meetings, “Dortmund want to keep it quiet” and “Chelsea are going along with this” etc etc

It doesn’t matter who makes the claim - the claim is conjecture about past events without any evidence 😆

This is pure conjecture claiming knowledge about a past event 😆

(And I presume you are referring to my prediction that Sancho could enable Utd to score 5-10 extra goals this season? Or has someone else said Man Utd will definitely score 20 extra? Because if so that person is an idiot lol)

I'm nowhere near brave enough to be hanging my hat on Mahrez and Jota getting predictable starts. I suppose there are enough credible 4.5 defenders out there to provide the cover to make it work, but I'd be a bit wary.

I have 2 and 3 but they're all good options, I love Antonio but both his injury history and tendency to be pushed out wide towards the end of the season means I think it's better to avoid. Watkins is a great option too but I'm going for Grealish for Villa cover

Depends how long for. I'm starting with Watkins and Antonio for the first 4 or 5 GWs. They can fall apart after that as I'll be on Kane and Haaland/Lewandowski/whoever.
If it was longer-term, I'd have Watkins and Nacho.

      Damn nice team

Personally I don’t see how the FPL gift horse that is Shaw & Bruno can be looked in the mouth (100% set piece coverage, 35+ XGi, 5 points per cleansheet etc etc)

But really hope Sancho & Cavani both smash it

The more goal involvements Man Utd generate this season (137 last year) the more Bruno will be hoovering up (32 last year)

And TAA Robbo is an old favourite of mine, they’re great fun to own in FPL

Nacho to be a 200+ point player his year too I reckon

    For the new crowd:

I've set up my first ever league - The No BS League.

Basically the challenge is to see how we fare going without Bruno & Salah and to see how our strategy will differ from those with 1-2 of those FPL beasts in their teams!
Delighted that a few managers joined from the DZ earlier...would welcome a few more at least to join us in the banter of what could be a very fun league!
I'll try and do a weekly breakdown of how the league is adapting to the challenge and what shrewd moves (if any lol) are being made.

How badly will no White affect Brighton?

They were fairly gash in defence when he was on loan at Leeds the season before and historically Potter has not had a reputation of being able to set up a defence. His Swansea side was in fact very leaky indeed. Was last season an anomaly based on the White Dunk axis?

Not expecting a reversion to something as bad as 2019/20 form but equally now doubt they maintain the underlying stats of last season.

For the first time this pre-season, with Lamptey out, I've ditched Sanchez and am devoid of Seagulls. Faith not quite lost, but sufficient doubt is there.

Hard to know - but he’s a very high calibre tooth to extract from that particular jaw tbf

Not sure how it will function post-op

They were a good ways clear of relegation last year on points, but would you be shocked to see them sucked down into the battle this year?

Don’t think it affects much imo. White’s a great ball playing CB, but from a pure defensive POV, he’s pretty replaceable by either Veltman or whoever they sign as replacement

Pretty sure Arsenal have been suckered into paying way over the odds given the current market but still think he's a quality player.

It may well be that it is the system that makes Brighton and not the players but I'm sufficiently dubious now to avoid defence there early on. Veltman an adequate replacement? Perhaps.

I think there is a case that the type of player needed to play CB at the top and bottom of the league is very different. Whilst Van Dijk is fantastic, I cant see him slotting into a Burnley backline for instance. Ball playing so much more important at the top. Shot stopping and marking more important at the bottom.

Point taken but Brighton defence operated in a similar way to top of there table clubs.

It wasn't just that their XGC was so good but that they looked comfortable taking on the big boys and played their own game against them. Hypothesis - naturally misplaced - is that White as a ball playing CB was essential to that - try it with a substandard replacement who hasn't been schooled by Bielsa and they will revert to Brigthon 2019/20 figures.

May be misremembering this but think I recall their going to City and attempting to take the game to them - when City were in their very good pre-CL-obsessed stage.

If you look at the 2nd half of last season (19 games) Brighton were 2nd-best on actual goals conceded and 2nd-best on xG conceded, only Chelsea were better on both counts. A huge undershoot on goals compared to xG was their problem.

If they were losing Dunk it would make a major difference, he plays centre of the back-3 and runs everything (and is also a great CB). Losing White will surely be less of a problem, Veltman can easily slot in there and they will sign a new CB anyway.

Very much rate Dunk and agree on his role.

White however was the one who brought the ball out of defence. That is central to Potter defence and is it is hard to find a replacement to replicate that. You can perhaps bring in a defender who is his equal defensively but if he is less sure on the ball then the system either needs to be changed or will simply operate less effectively. Very often ball playing defenders can be defensively poor/risky after all.

Veltman may be that man perhaps. In which case Arsenal have should have bought him! White is not sui generis but just buying a new CB to fill in for him could be tricky.

This is a good point. I've stuck Veltman in for now but whether I'll actually stick with him once I've thought it over more is another question, the same for Sanchez. That being said I have Emi as well so at least I'm not solely relying on Sanchez, but still I wanted Sanchez as a good option for rotating so I'll have to see about that too. Funny how quickly things and your view on events can change preseason eh?

Thanks for sui generis and thanks to google for helping me with it. 😉

Maybe I am mistaken. Dunk is so clearly the main man in my eyes that it's possible I have missed the importance of White's contribution to the whole.

          Hah! I’m doubling up w Veltman 😉

I do think it’s the system that works well - for instance, White is definitely no better than Dunk and Webster defensively, but he’s young. They’re being linked with Nat Phillips from Pool who’s a lottt more defensive than White, so I think they’ll be fine

Fwiw White for 50m is definitely OTT, but I guess that’s just the market today and Maguire who (arguably) isn’t any better went for almost double that

I do rate Potter as a manager and think he is really interesting. Were I Levy he would have been top of my wishlist and defo ahead of Nuno. Would be fascinated to see him with a squad of players who were top 8 quality.

I think Potter and BHA could continue to do well but White is a bit of a loss for sure...I did look at Sanchez as my keeper early doors but think I prefer a better keeper, Lamptey too as he's exciting but his fitness and the fact I don't want to be starting 4.5 defenders this season if I can help it...leads me to rule him out also. Dunk and potentially Welbeck the only two that are of slight interest.

The Brighton defence love on here is bizarre to me.

I get that they are cheap but I can't see them getting many clean sheets and they don't give away many shots on goal so their keeper is one of the worst picks in the game yet in everyone's team.

People think not allowing many chances means a good defence, they always find a way to concede, if that's the thinking than why not get Dunk who is always good for a goal or two throughout the season rather than a keeper who will be low on shots saved and bonus points?

They kept 12 clean sheets. 12.

Absolutely no chance Brighton live up to the defensive statistics without Ben White this year. They won’t even be top 10.

If Bissouma goes too they are in a relegation scrap for sure.

It's not really from a clean sheet perspective. It's their attack output. They did relatively poor in terms of C/S last season but still smashed it.

        • 3 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, I know having TAA and Robbo is not mainly from a clean sheet perspective, but my point still stands. Very rarely will teams(even good teams like Pool) win games 4-1/5-2 this season imo(as has been the trend last season or so) and that too with both the full backs being involved. Though I know, over the course of the season, their collective points will amount to sth, but won't that money be used better elsewhere with having just one of the two, is what I meant.

      All about fitness I’d imagine

If he stays fit he could score as many goals as he wants - it’s just at his age it’s a big ask

Greenwood being able to learn from him in training for another year could be massive for the future though

Start the first few PL matches, get subbed by Greenwood regularly. Mix it up with PL and CL later, Rashford and Greenwood eating into his gametime. Gently eased out of the picture as age catches up with him.

I've got Ayling and Ait-Nouri booked in for a GW5 WC. For the first 5 I just need a 4.5 to fill in GWs 4 and 5, and GW1 if Shaw goes AWOL. That profile is filled by Arsenal's White although A-N would be ideal if he is nailed to start.

Yeah he's there just in case he plays in a more attacking RB role, Thomas as LEI in case he nails a WB slot and Lamptey just in case he's actually fit and firing at RWB

*too many ifs n ands which is why I don't like the 4.5 bracket atm...starting with White though as he looks to be the one with the most potential value imo

Hi....any views on this team please?

Is it worth downgrading robbo to someone like coufal and investing 2m elsewhere?

    Sanchez
    Taa robbo shaw ayling 4m
    Salah Bruno buendia sarr brownill
    Watkins Antonio toney

    Thanks

Ayling 4m Sarr Brownhill & Toney make up one third of your total investment...let that sink in 😉

Yeah defence to an extent mate... and if you're happy playing Toney + Sarr every week fair play could well work out

Fabrizio Romano reporting that Palace have signed Joachim Andersen.

Tomkins/Guehi and Andersen won't be the worst central defence in the league. And excitingly with three CBs on the books we are two ahead of where we were this time last season 😉

That’s a decent signing. As a Palace fan how many more players do you think they need?

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

Around 3/4 but a couple anyway more to fill out squad rather than immediate starters mostly is my guess.

A mid for sure - Gallagher on loan is a 50/50 call. The low block seems to be on it's way out so we need someone who can run!

A RB who may turn out to be Clyne - which makes sense when you look at how Palace are setting up in preseason

Someone in attack probs - whether that is wide/CF or a number 10 type is up in the air.

Some rumours that Kouyate may be on his way out which would be a considerable blow I think and then there is the Zaha situation.

Kouyate would be tough to replace, real key player

Will be handy for Allardyce’s arrival somewhere between Halloween & Christmas…

At least you didn’t accompany it with a few paragraphs about clandestine meetings in smoke filled rooms where Fulham want to keep the deal quiet and Palace agree to that for now, but only because you have it on good authority from the kitman’s dad’s gardener that it’s all over Twitter that Anderson is an avid fish collector and the move suits him because of the abundance of aquarium equipment he can buy close to Selhurst Park 😆

    Template of the Son

    Sanchez, Foster
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Fofana, 4.0
    Salah, Son, Mount, Raphinha, 4.5
    DCL, Antonio, Watkins

(0.5 ITB to switch Watkins to Bamford somewhere between weeks 3-5)

    A or B

    A Toney
    B Rafinha

if it is straight Raph / 4.5 FWD vs Toney / 4.5 MID I would have to vote A as better. Straight up points I think Raphinha scores more though but hard to compared different positions 🙂

I've settled on 343 for now with all three forwards being in that 7.5-8.0 range. Looks like there's a lot of options at that price point and it should be easy to jump around in the event of injuries, form, or fixtures.

I have Raph as well because he just seems so dramatically underpriced. Switching out Bruno for Son opened up some interesting options that I've been tinkering with.

Think i'm settled on a team (for now lol). Kane and Lamptey not being available changed my team around a lot:

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw James Veltman
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Raphinha
    Wilson Toney

    Begovic Ayling Brownhill Obafemi

    - Mahrez seems a pretty risky pick but happy to start with him and do have 1.0 ITB to move to Son / Sancho easily should I want to.
    - Obviously Shaw will be moved out for someone else if he won't be fit to start the season.
    - James might be a rotation risk but think he should be okay early on in the season and do want to tap into that CHE def.

you could've left out the 'and Lamptey' bit in your first paragraph lol...like the Wilson, James & Mahrez punts...not a bad team as far as BS (Bruno & Salah) teams go 😉
