Great Expectations

Can Rayan Aït Nouri live up to his potential and become a viable FPL asset?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Rayan Aït Nouri (£4.5m) in our second pre-season instalment of Great Expectations, a series of articles on players who have shown glimpses of promise and who are potentially on the cusp of a breakout FPL campaign.

All stats and heatmaps used in this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

THE TRANSFER

Aït Nouri became a permanent Wolverhampton Wanderers player earlier this month after a promising campaign on loan at Molineux last season.

The Frenchman, who arrived on a five-year deal with the option of a sixth, is Bruno Lage’s fourth signing as Wolves new head coach.

On the deal, technical director Scott Sellars said:

“We think Rayan is a great signing for the football club. He proved last season that he’s a very talented player, with lots of potential – I thought he did well and kicked on towards the end of the season. He’s a player who is only going to get better, he’s a good boy, who works hard, and settled in well here.

We’ve used the loan before buying approach well in the past, with people like Jonny and Raul [Jimenez]. I think it’s a great way for both parties to get to know each other, to see if they can adapt and enjoy English football, and we get a chance to have a look first, and see if a deal can be done.

In Rayan’s case, he got a lot of minutes because both Jonny and Marcal suffered injury problems last season, so he had lots of games in the Premier League to show his quality.

At his age, he’s got a lot to learn still, a lot to work on, and I’m sure with us he’ll develop. He has great quality going forward, we all remember his goal on his debut, so he’s got a lot going for him, as well as areas to develop, like all players.”

The question is: can Aït Nouri now kick on and become one of the best budget defenders FPL?

2020/21 REVIEW

It didn’t take long for Aït Nouri to make his mark at Wolves, as he opened the scoring after just 18 minutes of his debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in October.

In his 23 appearances that followed, the youngster showed plenty of intent to get forward and provide an attacking threat, both as a left-back and left wing-back.

Above: Rayan Aït Nouri’s touch heatmap 2020/21

However, it was in the final nine games of the season that he truly established himself.

With Jonny (£4.5m) needing surgery on another ACL problem and Fernando Marçal (£4.5m) on the sidelines too, Aït Nouri produced solid performances as Wolves secured back-to-back 1-0 wins over Fulham, when he started taking set-pieces, and Sheffield United.

He then impressed against Brighton and Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion, as his confidence and stature in the team grew.

Statistically, amongst all defenders (with a 1,000-minute threshold), he ranked 11th for crosses and second for take-ons per 90 minutes:

    Anyone else going for Pepe?

He has finally nailed down a spot & was scoring for fun at the end of last season.
He even finished with a better goals per game record than Bruno with not many above him.
If he plays most the games, no Europe as well he could be a steal at 7.5 mil?

Arsenal will play either Auba or Laca up front with ESR, Saka & Pepe. Pepe offers goals where Saka & ESR don’t at present, more assists for them so Pepe will play as he is a great finisher

Currently debating Bruno + Mahrez v Sancho + KDB. This is the rest of the squad at the moment

    Bachmann
    TAA - Digne - White - Lamptey
    Salah - KDB - Sancho - Buendia
    Watkins - Iheanacho

    Foster - Reguilon - Brownhill - Obafemi

I think he's worth a punt, I'm going Havertz and Pepe GW1, then will assess if Gundogan, Torres or Foden are worth transferring in based on Charity Shield and GW1. Torres will be explosive if you have patience with a few 1's (like Mahrez).

    Henderson
    TAA-Lamptey-Fofana
    Salah-Fernandes-Raphinha-Mount
    Nacho-Watkins-Toney

    Foster-Stones-Ayling-Brownhill

Stones will be in from GW2. Lamptey/Ayling will rotate. Will switch Lamptey to any BHA defender based on fitness. But have tough choice to pick, if Kane going to City, Son will be CF, but can he perform without Kane and under new manager? Although preseason going well.

Notes for opening 30 mins of this exhibition match.

Rafa has EVE working the lines with quite a few long balls up from the back targeting mainly right side (from Coleman)
Begovic one good save and had the mistake that lead to the goal so far with ricochet
Godfrey / Holgate - good run outs
Townsend had a couple of good crosses in and one shot from centre 35yrds out
      James - pretty quiet
Digne - had one good cross in so far
Iwobi - Looks tentative and a couple of times lacked bravery in tackles
Mo Keane, some good movement but tried a failed dive in the box.

    Half time
It’s a good run out for the Everton players.
Temperatures are roasting there. They are definitely playing like it’s an exhibition match.

    - Digne took a high boot to the face at 43mins seems ok after
    - Doucouré and Allan don’t seem to be gelling well in the deep middle. There has been a couple of mix ups.
    - Coleman probably best player for Everton. Tracked back and got forward ok.
    - James continues to be quiet. Dossing about high midfield. Not very near any crosses that go in and no set pieces delivered from him.
    - Iwobi playing deeper, couple of short bursts of energy runs but culminate in nothing.
    - Townsend has put a few quality crosses in and is doing ok.

Expecting some rotation when they come back out again

      2nd half
On: Andre Gomes, Gordon, Gray, Kenny, Broadhead.
Off: Kean, Coleman, Townsend, Doucoure, James.

      @60 mins
Everton having better position. Much better for them. Bit more traffic through the middle of the pitch now and in the Millonarios half.
      -Couple of heavy passes from
Iwobi, one with Gomes and one to Demari Gray. Gray was through but got caught up in his feet.
Iwobi has though, made some way better runs so far.
      - Gordon has been through a couple of times and looks lively

For those that are interested in the main players that have come off.
It’s been a good run out for them.
It’s been hot and the stadium has quite a few people with some atmosphere for what it is.

Holgate - Made a couple of decent tackles but also missed one that led to a shot on goal. I would rate him in this friendly 6/10
Digne - A little subdued as he was defending deep for periods against fast opposition. He did take one free kick and put a couple of half decent crosses in. He took a boot to the face but carried on, seemingly OK, and came out for a bit in the second half. He made some good runs down the wing but when he was playing seemed like more traffic on other side of pitch. Good fitness building for him. 6/10
Allan - was how you’d expect him. Nothing super impressive. Couple of mixups, one decent challenge 4.5/10
Coleman - prob best player in first half. Several long balls mixed down the wing or aimed deep to centre. Good challenges. 6.5/10
James - Generally quite quiet. Didn’t really make that much effort to get on the end of crosses. Felt like he was waiting at the bus stop for a long time in the middle and high up top. Made one half decent run into the box. No sexy dribbling and neither super accurate with any passes 4.5/10

      @85 mins
      - Gordon & Broadhead have both been lively since coming on. Gordon seems to have lots of energy and is running around everywhere. Broadhead made a great run from about the half way line (left side) all the way through to on goal in the box, but his shot was saved.
-Gomes distribution of the ball has been good to either flank. And mostly accurate too. He’s beginning to look tired though. Good fitness building for him. Took an indirect free kick in the middle of the pitch just, too high of a floater and went through to the keeper.

Godfrey and Iwobi came off @ 73.
      - Godfrey did pretty good overall. Some nice interceptions. Started off slowly. Didn’t play too bad with Holgate.
Iwobi - Generally mixed performance but good run out for him. Periodically rusty, couple of great passes and a couple of terrible ones. Could have done with focussing on some better runs imo.

Dallas Soucek could work but seems a curious use of funds

Dallas could be oop in the wrong way this time out from time to time anyway. He obvs has an eye for goal but way exceeded XG last time (see City game) and don't expect him to get so many goals this time.

Not that keen on DCL here and think him overpriced and not keen on fixtures when looking at Brighton Leeds Villa all away in the first 5.

Question: Anyone else think there’s a bit of a cheerleader effect going on with the 7.5m forwards. As a group they look very attractive but not convinced any individually are essential.

You know I thought that about Watkins last season. One of the villas first games they won 3-0 against Fulham and he didn’t score but then he bagged a hatrrick against Liverpool after and changed my mind. I kind of fancy him to start off good the season so he’s on my team.

Yeah I’m on Watkins as well but fixtures turn quickly

See below - go into the members area and run the comparison. I found confirmation there of my experience with him last season - you just hold and ignore fixtures

Just compared Ollie Watkins last season against bottom 9 versus top 10.

    Interesting results

Think I'll stick with my plan to ignore fixtures as far as he is concerned 🙂

      Goals for Watkins vs:

      1. Man City - 0
      2. Man United - 0
      3. Liverpool - 4
      4. Chelsea - 0
      5. Leicester - 0

      6. West Ham - 1
      7. Tottenham - 1
      8. Arsenal - 3
      9. Leeds - 0
      10. Everton - 1

Looking at that, he's not so prolific against the top 5. He scored in both games against Liverpool, including a hattrick in the 7-2 win.

Transfer him out and that's an effective minus 4

The goals above account for 10 of the 14 goals he scored last season. That leaves 4 scored against the bottom dwellers. Is he fixture dependent? On his record does it make to transfer out or in for a fixture run`?

Next step is to look at Antonio Wilson DCL and Bamford and see if they have a particular record of being fixture dependent for returns.

        Interesting results there too 🙂

Would you prefer Foden or Grealish?
(assuming the later becomes Citizen Jack)
Note: I was very surprised that Foden finished just 10 points behind Mahrez last season which makes me think Mahrez is a bit too pricy this time round and that the other two could easily better his output. Thoughts?

Mahrez seems to play more or is that a fallacy?

Yes he played more than Foden last season but only scored 10 points more overall. So if holding one of them long term, Foden looks the better pick to me at 1.0 less

I guess we need to consider who we think will play more and to answer that question, who is likely to be the competition for both players do you think?

With a wealth of talent rotation is obvious and it's hard to predict who plays more out of the attacking players...Torres at 7.0 is one that interests me, if he gets a chunk of game time that price could be a joke
