FPL team guide 2021/22 – Tottenham Hotspur: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Tottenham Hotspur.

From early-season title contenders to a mid-season managerial change, Spurs’ 2020/21 campaign was an eventful one.

They finished seventh in the Premier League and also reached the final of the Carabao Cup, but defeats to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb in March were real low points and ultimately led to the sacking of José Mourinho.

Ryan Mason took temporary charge for the run-in, with Nuno Espírito Santo now installed as head coach ahead of the new season.

You can read more on the incoming Lilywhites boss here.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

 1

Despite the lack of a settled centre-back partnership, Spurs’ totals of 12 clean sheets and 45 goals conceded ranked a respectable joint-fifth and sixth respectively last season.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded456th
Clean sheets125th=
Shots conceded48612th
Shots in the box conceded32413th
Shots on target conceded15510th
Big chances conceded  554th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.0310th
Non-penalty expected goals conceded (non-pen xGC)42.157th

However, it was all a bit underwhelming in FPL, with all of their defenders failing to reach 90-points.

As a result, a Spurs defender won’t cost you more than £5.0m in 2021/22, which does suggest that they could offer value once we have established who the regular starters are.

Nuno mainly opted for a 3-4-3/3-5-2 shape at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the majority of his team’s attacks coming from wide areas.

If a similar system is used at Spurs, that would boost the appeal of their wing-backs.

Sergio Reguilón (£5.0m) ended his debut season in England with a respectable six assists and is at his best when bombing forward, while former Wolves man Matt Doherty (£5.0m) is also one to watch, having contributed eight goals and 15 assists across Nuno’s first two campaigns in the Premier League.

At this stage, it remains to be seen if one of the £4.5m options will emerge as a starter, but if they do, FPL managers will be handed a budget route into their backline.

THE ATTACK

Kane on the Golden Boot charge as Alli enters FPL differential conversation

Spurs ranked joint-third for goals scored (68) last season, but their inability to control games meant that they often had to rely on moments of individual brilliance to get them out of trouble:

A has higher potential imo. Watch cavani who's still on break for if he's match fit and sharp gw1. If he is then he's got a nice window of 4 games in about a month before UCL rotation kicks in. I'd go for 4.5 and mahrez over cresswell and pepe fwiw

Cheers I can do B with Pepe instead of Esr with cresswell down to another 4.5 which looks pretty good obviously a little cheap at the back.

With Sancho done, Hendo at number 1 and Varane getting closer, United should be a real threat to challenge for the title this season.

We're still miles behind City and even Chelsea imo...until we add that proper DM we won't be challenging...McFred is Brighton level stuff (with respect to BHA fans)

Don't necessarily agree we are miles behind. City better but we've definitely closed the gap with Sancho and Varane (if!). Our strike force is second to none.

Don't think Chelsea is ahead of us.

There's too much talk about it now imo

Feels like it's been reported as "done" every day for weeks now - a la Sancho last year

Starting to get the feeling this is him & his agent leveraging an extra few grand an hour, a city centre apartment and a car or two out of his new Madrid deal

I think you're wrong. The feel of this deal is very different to Sancho last year. That was just United posturing, there was no personal terms, no fee agreed etc.

The reports for Varane are much clearer. It makes sense for him to move on to a new challenge, there's no new deal on the table, United can afford him. It just feels a lot further along.

I think this is a move that is very likely to happen. Of course there's always a DDG fax situation, but I think it'll be something like that which scuppers the deal.

Similar to Sancho in that it was reported as done every day for weeks (People were literally celebrating Sancho's signing several times last summer) before not materialising

As per the regular updates going back a month from our diligent Varane correspondent above, this has been rumbling for a while now

Really (really) hope it does go through - but it's starting to drag out now - always a bad sign, very similar feeling to Sancho last summer

It's dragging because the player is on holiday after playing in the Euros. It is a different feel to last year with Sancho. I certainly didn't feel Sancho was done last year by any means. Just lots of speculation.

In the news doesn't mean it's close. The wording of those articles is different. And one of them is the Sun 😛

Those articles are just random tips of a 6 week iceberg - a relentless torrent of "Sancho Done", "Sancho Imminent", "Sancho close" that had many prematurely celebrating his arrival last summer

Do a quick search of "Sancho Man Utd" with date range set to July up to TDD - it was ridiculous

And now even our dedicated specialist Varane correspondent is starting to slip in the references to Varane's madrid deal "not being a factor" (which is a serious alarm bell)

                  "And as
                  @FabrizioRomano
                  saying: “Getting closer”

Will he use the interest to get him a new contract at Real? Nothing suggests that"

In other words - it is very much a possibility that he (and his agent) could well be using the interest to get him a new contract lol

I mean sure it might not get done. But it's closer than Sancho last year imo. That's just my opinion on how the news breaks. Let's see what happens. Henderson is my goalie if Varane signs and maybe even if he doesn't.

I'm kinds with MBP here. No one seriously doubts Varane will join United imminently. The point is, that poster's been spamming us with hundreds of links just repeating the same exact claim - the deal is imminent. We don't need to read the same news every hour with nothing moving forward.

Mate, the Guardian on Tuesday 4th August 2020 literally reported Sancho had agreed personal terms with Man Utd, and the clubs had moved on to being close to agreeing a fee

"Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund are close to agreeing a fee for Jadon Sancho, with the England forward having agreed personal terms on a five-year contract at Old Trafford."

                      https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/aug/04/manchester-united-close-to-deal-with-borussia-dortmund-after-jadon-sancho-agrees-personal-terms

This was the shite we had to listen to every day for weeks & months, it was a circus

Varane hasn't quite gotten there yet, but we're only just over 3 weeks into his saga - the longer this drags on, the more it feels like Sancho-gate

Obviously the agents motivations are totally different, and the players' situations are totally different - but the whole daily "Varane done", "Varane close" ,"Varane reports to Real Madrid training this week", "Varane to be done this week", "Varane not using Man Utd interest to get a big lovely jubbly bumper new contract, honest!" headlines are starting to go down that well trodden path of disappointment & anticlimax

                      Hope he signs, great player

    Morning all!

    How we all doing?

Mark and I are recording with the first BlackBox apprentice today. She started watching a bit of football recently but has never played FPL before but wants to join the community, main aim - to beat her husband. Our aim is to chuck her in the deep end. Stats, tables, heat maps, xG, FFS, Twitter... she has no idea what she's getting herself in to...

Second video will be on Wednesday with someone who is obsessed with football but this will be his first year of FPL. This guy will be left to fend on his own with nothing but the eye test to guide him.

    Who will do better?

These won't be a feature on the main stream, but we'll touch base with them every now and then. Just a bit of fun and a little experiment.

If you haven't checked out FPL BlackBox yet, our first episode of the new season went up last week: Youtube.com/FPLBlackBox

Sounds like the latter will not get much mentorship and could wind up looking like a beginner's idea of what Lateriser's style is -- playing the Pep/Tuchel roulette, taking lots of hits to get the perfect players in for differential captaincies, etc. Without the savvy of an experienced player, that will probably wind up worse than just following the template.

Considering the end of the transfer window coincides with the international break between gw3 and Gw4, and considering one of a game changer transfer might happen between at that time (Kane, Haaland etc..) and considering some key players on late holidays might miss the beginning of the season I have came down to the conclusion that there is a very high probability we have to WC in GW4 or 5.
Acknowledging this, isn’t going agressive (Mahrez, 3 Liverpool etc) for the first 3 GW a viable strategy?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

Yes, that's the conclusion I've reached. So my squad is set up for the matches from GW1-4, or possibly GW5 if I want to observe the first match with newbies. Looks quite different to my earlier draft.

        I agree
With liverpool, everton, city, villa having ok fixtures in gw5 you could push it to WC GW6 with full info on line ups.
Use free transfers until then to jump on cheap gems and bandwagons to build team value

Always aggressively attack the opening two or three gameweeks. This blind long term planning is a fools errand. After a weekend of football it will all go out the window as the game becomes form based. There is so many unknowns until then that make nailing your gw1 picks a complete lottery. My experience from 12ish years is attack the first 3 gameweeks and apply the wealth of knowledge we get from analysing 20/30/40 games with wildcard. Or get stupidly lucky and keep it because a lot of your pre season guesses are performing. It's a numbers game out of 7+ million some win the lottery.

I don't like having to waste transfers getting in a full playing bench. End up missing out on points leading up to the late doubles.

Yeah I hear you. But once cheap steals come out of the woodwork etc. I find that my team naturally fluxes towards having a full playing bench

I think the best approach if you're wanting to bench boost GW1 would be instead to invest in 2 x 4.5M Goalkeepers, then have 5 starting defenders and play a 4-3-3. This could allow you to potentially do 2 transfers, downgrading one player then upgrading 4.5M midfielder right before the 1st wildcard. Think this could avoid the problem of too much funds on the bench when bench boosting in DGWs and being stuck with players you don't want.

Sorry meant to put 3-4-3. The 2 benched defenders could be 2 x 4.5M

I play my wildcard by game week 2-3 each year I play. This is deliberate and not a response to poor planning etc... I’m not saying I’m a pro player or anything like that but I’ve had some pretty good finishes top 50k a couple of times. Totally depends on your strategy. I prefer to get off to a fast start and defend a lead in mini leagues etc and I’ve always won with this strategy. Using it early is a big advantage as by gameweek 6-8 I’ve found people end up wildcarding to a similar team to what I already have and I’ve reaped the benefits because of the early moves etc. There is so much data now and fpl advice that you end up with similar teams as most people because there will be a big article on fixture swing in gameweek 6 etc and everyone follows this strategy (not saying this is bad btw) and everyone wildcards similar time with not much difference in teams as all the cheap players are identified and best big hitters are known.

Again I’m far from a pro at this game but I think it’s a good strategy to wildcard from a position of strength and try and extend lead early rather than holding on for Injuries or following the crowd.

As far as bench boost gw1 this is actually something I’m doing this year. Based on what I said above I thought why not give it a try as I end up wildcarding early every year so why not try and actually use the chip effectively by setting my team up for gw1-2. Chelsea for example could destroy a new look palace team that have a new manager.

I’m going to try something new for a change and get the most frustrating chip out the way and ultimately save myself stress and points hits later in the season trying to get 15 dgw players which just never seems to work. 😉

        • 5 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

That is my thinking as well because i want Chelsea players for GW1 but not afterwards and I also wanna load up on Leeds and United players but they face each other GW1. I usually wildcard around GW4 as well normally so just thought why not try to get max points out of GW1 and go to GW2 with a lead against minileague rivals.

Need to remember that there is more than one way to play the game. Again not saying it is the best way but worth trying something new if your typically an early wildcarder. I doubt there will be a lot of Chelsea rotation at the start. Think tuchel will want to have a crack at league since already champions league winner. Which Chelsea players are you thinking mate. I’m currently on Havartz, James and chillwell

Yeah I think this approach is worth a shot (also I always seem to bench 10+ points GW1).

Last year I WC'd in week two, got Martinez/Dallas and a few other gems, as well as DCL and Hamez before they exploded v West Brom. First half of the season was very strong, peaking around rank 300, then got much tougher to break from the template near the end and finishing just under 2K.

Equally, I've had other years where it's backfired, particularly one where I tripled up on United after they battered Chelsea and then Chelsea won the league. The upside can be huge but it can also go really, really wrong.

Mane is tempting just for first couple then a nice swap to Kdb if he looks to be returning his glorious best...but going without a big hitter makes for a very strong squad...the bloody armband is my slight concern of going down this path

I used to play a side game only pick players under 9m. Eye opening. Way more points in squad without big hitters but the double captaincy counters it. One big hitter is probably most efficient with a 100m budget

JIA, so far, my drafts have been one big hitter : Salah, but I brought in a second captaincy option today, so that I don't end up having to select Mahrez as capt.
So, I've quickly looked at the first 8 rounds and I see that with the squad make-up I've chosen, it'll be sensible to play 4 at the back 3 times in those first 8 rounds.
What I'm saying is ; if you're spreading the wealth in hope of a greater average points spread, sacrificing capt options ..... then at least have 4 fair dinkum defenders to cover you those weeks that sexy midfield 5 don't look quite so sexy.

People will dismiss Havertz but he has the best XGI/90 per million of any player in the league based on the second half of last season. He was heavily underperforming and the UCL goal could settle him down, so if any outside player is going to explode I'd say he's up there.

If he starts 5 of the first 6 he's got good fixtures from GW7

It just seems a stretch he'll go from starting 7 of the last 19 league games to starting 5 of 6, but much stranger things than that have happened

I'd write off the end of last year for City/Chelsea - first XIs were in the UCL, not the league.

Given how Chelsea work, Tuchel is under pressure to win the league this year, so I think he'll be much clearer on his first XI early doors.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

For Chelsea I personally couldn't fully discount their final league lineups - they weren't guaranteed champions league football unless they got top 4 so it was still important to them

Even in the cups - Tuchel still benched him for the Semi final first leg vs Madrid, the FA Cup Semi Final vs. Man City, and the FA Cup Final

And in their final 4 league games he didnt start him for City, Leciester or Villa, and took him off early vs Arsenal (nd only started him 7 times out of 19 in the league in total which is the big red flag)

His PL gametime at this stage is all speculative - but if someone has a strong gut feel for Havertz i wouldn't put them off - hes a very high potential player

I just wouldn't go near him myself until I've seen evidence that Tuchel won't rotate him in the league

If there's a reasonable doubt it's always better to be a game or two late than 5/10/20 games early imo

And the fixture swing in GW7 has enabled that approach pretty perfectly for me anyways

Yeah that's all fair. I don't think the gamble is worth it with the fixtures - but I can totally see the case when someone goes for him.

Same - if someone has a strong gut feel for him vs Palace, they'd be better to act on it and avoid the situation where they miss a double or treble return

Personally, I'm totally comfortable with waiting until GW7 though & can take the rough with smooth until then unless he (and his manager) does something mental that necessitates an earlier course correction

He was in my early drafts but after looking at the fixtures, and the swing in 7, I agree with MBP that wait and see is probably best when he's 8.5m. It's not like you're lacking in potential picks in and around that mid-priced bracket.

    Thoughts on KdB over Fernandes?

I'm looking at my team and genuinely think Fernandes is the weakest link. So expensive, unconvincing end to the season, poor Euros, could be playing further back.

I don't really want to dive straight onto Sancho either because he's new, new league, what system will United play? so KdB? If he's fit he's got the best per 90 stats of anyone. He could be playing effectively as a false 9 again.

The other option is to get Mane and go for it with Liverpool. They have good fixtures and a full pre season.

Why should the highest scoring player in the game last season be 10.5m/11m? He was 10.5 last season.

Doesn’t matter, if he’s 10.5 then 70%+ of the game would own him. FPL shouldn’t be generous with prices like that.

Cant price Bruno for that much as he's comfortable been a better asset to own than the most expensive player in the game for almost 60 gameweeks now.

These ultra premiums are not priced for value. You buy them because they provide reliable captains.

Yeah no denying he's been great so far. Also United went the whole season unbeaten away from home. The team overall was stronger away.

The Portugal thing in particular is the biggest load of bollocks I've heard in a long time

Whilst Bruno was busy clocking up 48 returns in 49 starts/2 subs for Man Utd, he was equally busy managing to return in just two of Portugal's 13 games during that time (an assist vs Croatia in the Nations League, and a brace + assist in a friendly vs Israel).

And prior to joining utd, he had 2 goals & 3 assists in his previous 19 games for Portugal - playing several times against farmers & postmen

If he'd had his Utd boots on in the Euros he'd have had 3 goals in 4 games from penalties alone, before DFK's and any other activity

And he still ended the season with 2 goals in his last 3 league starts, despite utd already having sealed second place, and being concentrated on Thursday Night Europa League distractions

Utd got 137 goal involvements last season, from 73 goals scored

Their attack is only getting stronger & they should have a realistic go at getting 150 goal involvements this year (who knows, maybe more if that attack really clicks - but let's not be too hasty too soon & stay conservative for now)

Bruno should have a no bother hovering up 30-40 of those goal involvements (And the inevitable baps he gets when he so much as farts on the pitch)

Absolutely stunningly positioned FPL player, has so much going for him in the game

Do you not think that United might change their formation and gameplan though this season?

I can see them try a 4-3-3 with Cavani, Greenwood, Sancho and Bruno playing deeper in the Pogba role (especially if he gets transferred to PSG).

That will really hurt his creativity and he'll start putting up Portugal numbers.

Not sure there would be a massive difference between Bruno as a #8 in a 4-3-3 and Bruno as a #10 in a 4-2-3-1. He drops deep to collect the ball at times as a 10 anyway. Would still get forward, would still be able to play the killer pass, and would still be on pens and some set pieces.

They definitely could change things - they often change their formation depending on opponents... But I can't see what they could do to nullify Bruno as an attacking threat short of playing him as a goalkeeper

I'm pretty sure that if they started him alongside Maguire as a centreback he'd still get 10 goals from pens & DFK's & about 10 assists from his passing range

Listen, there's no guarantees with any player, and stranger things have happened than Bruno being on 15 points from the first 5x gameweeks

But that would be a very, very strange occurance, and if it happened there would probably have been some freakishly horrible luck involved

I think he'll have a good go at making hay all year as part of that Man Utd attack

I dont think our 4231 is much different to do that to be honest.

Not sure how playing Bruno deeper will make our attack stronger?

Anyways Ole prefer playing 2 holding mids behind Bruno and if we dont do that our defence will struggle which might change with Varane coming but I still dont see Ole pushing Bruno back.

KDB is the better player and plays for a better team. But his health is a question. Fernandes tailed off last year and did not look great at the Euros.

I think a case can be made for any of Bruno, Mane, KdB or Kane to partner Salah.

The only thing I would say is we all have an eye on Kane @ City and therefore the thing not to do is spread the value around because that almost forces an early wildcard, whilst retaining value in the 2nd premium creates more flexibility.

As this article shows, the whole Spurs set-up is a 'wait and see'. He could be up top with Son if Kane goes and isn't replaced. But too many imponderables to think any further at the moment.

Not for GW1 but he could be an option at some stage. The 6.5m midfielder bracket looks good with Buendia, Raphinha, Saka and possibly Alli and Bowen.

Maddo & Barnes still wait and watch. Cant even be sure if Barnes or Nacho or both will start the season and Maddison has been average for quite a while now.
Arsenal play Chelsea & City in GW2-3 so that's definitely another wait and watch.
Harrison double up with Raph doesn't make sense with the first 4 fixtures.

Sarr took all Watfords penalties last year when Deeney wasnt on the pitch bar one of the earlier ones when João Pedro took it ahead of Sarr. Deeney didn't return to take any penalties after Sarr took their most recent.

I think Arsenal are still unsure whether Bellerin will leave or not. No bids were received, and frankly, I wouldn't want them to accept any. He should be the first choice if he stays, or rotated with Chambers (or White).

I'd spend those 0.5m extra on Tierney, quite nailed and 5.0 for the most attacking defender in last season's 3rd best defence seems like a good deal.
