FPL team guide 2021/22 – Tottenham Hotspur: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Tottenham Hotspur.

From early-season title contenders to a mid-season managerial change, Spurs’ 2020/21 campaign was an eventful one.

They finished seventh in the Premier League and also reached the final of the Carabao Cup, but defeats to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb in March were real low points and ultimately led to the sacking of José Mourinho.

Ryan Mason took temporary charge for the run-in, with Nuno Espírito Santo now installed as head coach ahead of the new season.

You can read more on the incoming Lilywhites boss here.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

 1

Despite the lack of a settled centre-back partnership, Spurs’ totals of 12 clean sheets and 45 goals conceded ranked a respectable joint-fifth and sixth respectively last season.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded456th
Clean sheets125th=
Shots conceded48612th
Shots in the box conceded32413th
Shots on target conceded15510th
Big chances conceded  554th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.0310th
Non-penalty expected goals conceded (non-pen xGC)42.157th

However, it was all a bit underwhelming in FPL, with all of their defenders failing to reach 90-points.

As a result, a Spurs defender won’t cost you more than £5.0m in 2021/22, which does suggest that they could offer value once we have established who the regular starters are.

Nuno mainly opted for a 3-4-3/3-5-2 shape at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the majority of his team’s attacks coming from wide areas.

If a similar system is used at Spurs, that would boost the appeal of their wing-backs.

Sergio Reguilón (£5.0m) ended his debut season in England with a respectable six assists and is at his best when bombing forward, while former Wolves man Matt Doherty (£5.0m) is also one to watch, having contributed eight goals and 15 assists across Nuno’s first two campaigns in the Premier League.

At this stage, it remains to be seen if one of the £4.5m options will emerge as a starter, but if they do, FPL managers will be handed a budget route into their backline.

THE ATTACK

Kane on the Golden Boot charge as Alli enters FPL differential conversation

Spurs ranked joint-third for goals scored (68) last season, but their inability to control games meant that they often had to rely on moments of individual brilliance to get them out of trouble:

Latest draft with less than 3 weeks to go. How's it looking?

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Buendia
    Watkins Antonio Wilson

    (Foster White Brownhill 4.0)

If Shaw is not fit Stones/Reece will come in
Buendia could be Sarr and frees up 0.5m too
Nacho if looks nailed will come in for Wilson/Antonio

How is she looking? I keep coming back to this every time I try tinker
    Sanchez l 4.0
    TAA l Robbo l White l Ayling l 4.0
    Salah l Bruno l Raphinha l Barnes l Buendia
    Antonio l Nacho l 4.5

None of the above imo. There's a tiny chance B Williams might start GW1 if Shaw doesn't, but otherwise either a 4m gets a move or you're relying on the likes of Manquilo or Hoever, Long, Duffy or Omo getting a lucky break covering an injury.

Thoughts on this draft after some time away from tinkering?

    Sanchez Gunn

    Sanchez
    TAA, Digne, ___, ___, Ayling

Best option to complete this backline? I'm playing 4-4-2. Ayling can rotate in so not worried about Arsenal's tough fixtures.

    A) Shaw + White
    B) Coufal + Tierney

    Thoughts on Werner this season?

He's had a hard time in 20/21 but he was a marvelous goalscorer before moving. Trusted by Tuchel and undisturbed by Giroud, might be an interesting punt.

When you look at his season history... there's an outlier in there in 19/20:

      League goals:

      20/21 - 6
      19/20 - 28
      18/19 - 16
      17/18 - 13
      16/17 - 21
      15/16 - 6
      14/15 - 3
      13/14 - 4

Seen a few people now considering sancho over Bruno, question is which upgrades will you make with the money or who does it allow that you really want?

I’m looking at it and thinking it lets me do Toney to a 7.5 and upgrade my defence a little bit not sure it’s worth it with those moves

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Most are going for Son and Sancho in exchange of Bruno and mid-price 3rd mid.

Most really? Majority of drafts I'm seeing still have Bruno in them.

Yeah, that 2.5m makes a heck of a difference. I had Bruno, but the squad as a whole didn't look right. With Sancho instead it looks brilliant, albeit without Bruno.

    3. I Member
      • 8 Years

I think Sancho will do well but Bruno has been an FPL points scoring machine since joining United. I'm starting with Fernandes. He will probably be my captain in GWs 3 and 4. Can easily downgrade to Sancho if he's matching him.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

My assessment is that Bruno will outscore Sancho, but that my total points without Bruno will be more than if I had him - before I wildcard cGW5-6.

    4. Dr. Rog

of course it makes the squad better overall... problem is thats a wildcard when Kane moves to City.

flexibility has a premium, especially in the opening game weeks where outcomes are more important than optimisation of expected probabilities.

KDB being overlooked. Simple to switch one to the other. I'm starting with KDB and Salah. If something happens. or Bruno looks fantastic then it's an easy switch.

I just tried to sell Bruno for Sancho and get Son in, but it means formation change for me (or two downgades elsewhere):

      1) Bruno, Watkins/Wilson, 4.5 mid
      2) Sancho, Son, 4.5 fwd

Tbh I don't know which is better, but getting Kane will cost extra hit with Sancho and Son.

Any advice on choosing a GK for a first timer? I've just got a membership & am looking at stats for clean sheets and bonus/save pts, but to be honest I'm not quite sure how to use all this info yet. My impression is that its better to pick a talented keeper from a side that do give up a fair few chances over someone from a top 4/6 side who wont have much to do..? Hovering between sanchez & meslier at the moment; not sure if i want to dodge leeds' difficult fixtures or hope for save pts v MUN/LIV?
    Thanks

Solid strategy. I tend to pick based on price + fixtures and the likelness of them actually getting points. Martinez last season was fantastic to own from GW1. Sanchez has this potential.

It's that or pull money from somewhere and put in a 'set and forget' keeper like Ederson - but that comes at a price (might want 3 city outfield)...

I wouln't worrty too much - as a newcomer I'd expect you'll wildcard about GW3 🙂 (Talking from experience and doing it every year in the IB)

I calculated number of CSs for 16-17 and 17-18.

      16-17

      GW 1-10 : 52
      GW 11-20 : 47

      17-18

      GW 1-10 : 68
      GW 11-20 : 58

      18-19

      GW 1-21 : 104

So no clear indication from these numbers. For a particular team, numbers could be different.

Depends how long for. Are you trying to catch just the early fixtures? Do you need a nailed-on starter like Moxon does?

Early fixtures - a Brighton replacement - Webster or Veltman. I'm on Ait-Nouri who sits on my bench for the first 3 games. Fofana is reliable. White if you trust Arsenal. Ayling possibly the best overall long-term pick. Quite a lot of options actually.

White could have positive impact on Ars def and with Shaw in my team I want good 1st sub for gw1. Therefore White for me, at least atm. Lamptey has injury history that I dislike and if he is not even starting, there is no clue when he is back and how fit he is going to be, so he has also game time risk.

I have Ben White assuming he completes his move to Arsenal. Arsenal are a sneakily decent team defensively (conceded the fewest goals in the last 6 games of last season - 3). He'll also walk into that team and might even be playing in Xhaka's DM role if he moves on.

Template but Son over Bruno with a stronger bench.

    Sanchez Bachmann
    Trent Robbo Digne Shaw Omobamidele
    Salah Son Buendia Raphinha Brownhill
    Nacho Watkins Toney

    What do you think?

By stronger bench it’s still only Toney with a 4.0 and a 4.5 mid.

I get the urge to not chose Bruno, I’d still want a Man U attacker though. Their fixtures are awesome. Problem is which one? (Which is why I always end back with Bruno myself).

      1. IN SANE IN DE BRUYNE

        Toney would play every week
There is a backup keeper also, for rotation
Leeds GW1 is not awesome imo
I just don't want any of those attackers right now

Settled on this draft now. I recognise the bench is weak, hoping a 4m player emerges to give me two starting players. GTG?

The front line is perfect for an early wildcard punt. Watkins GW1-3 and Antonio GW1-4 are tasty. With that bench a wildcard can't be far off anyway.

There might time to try to save one ft and ditch both Buendia and Watkins out for free after gw3 and Antonio week later. But that bench isn't good enough.

Thoughts on this alternative draft ?

    Henderson
TAA - Robbo - Coufal - Tierney (Manquillo)
Salah - Son - Sancho - Raph (Brownhill)
    Watkins - Antonio (Obafemi)

No bench, but starting 11 looks tempting.

Gilmour not in many folks teams (as far as I see on last few days RMTs). At £4.5 he could be absolute gold as 5th MF.

Loan feels a bit like when Mount went to Derby County a few years ago. Got to better than the alternatives?

Umming and ahhing over a draft that forgoes big hitters for solid rotation.
    Any thoughts much appreciated please...

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne Dunk
    Salah Mount Pepe Buendia
    Watkins Antonio

    (Meslier Fofana Toney Raphinha)

[Considering switching out Mount/Pepe for Sancho and Watkins for Pukki dependent on their form by GW4.]

So really just no Bruno compared to most.

I think the keeper rotation is going to annoy you when you sit the wrong one inevitably.

Similarly if you have that front 3 I think you want to play them all the time. You’ll miss goals if you’re sitting them for fixtures I think.

      Interesting mids though.

Thanks so much! I think you’re right. The pain of those points on the bench might just be too much for me to bear.

But so many alternatives to the big hitters that I’m really excited about and no way to get them all in there.

Got a nice frontline of Kane, Watkins, Bamford. Defense is also decent with Trent, Cresswell, Wan Bissaka (and maybe Laporte). Picking the right midfielder will probably make the difference.

Trying FPL draft for the first time, last time I played draft was probably 4-5 years back with some weird scoring system where DMs were killing it 😀

Working on the basis that there will be lower proportion of dead teams involved - dubious logic probs. Dead teams kill draft as I recall.

              Two tiered.

$10 for bottom division (currently 10 teams) and $25 for too division (14 teams I think).

New teams start at the bottom (like me)

Draft is this weekend with 8hrs per pick allowed to accommodate worldwide members.

Scoring is FPL style and a little more. Seems really well run from what I can tell. I’m looking forward to it.
