FPL team guide 2021/22 – Tottenham Hotspur: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Tottenham Hotspur.

From early-season title contenders to a mid-season managerial change, Spurs’ 2020/21 campaign was an eventful one.

They finished seventh in the Premier League and also reached the final of the Carabao Cup, but defeats to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb in March were real low points and ultimately led to the sacking of José Mourinho.

Ryan Mason took temporary charge for the run-in, with Nuno Espírito Santo now installed as head coach ahead of the new season.

You can read more on the incoming Lilywhites boss here.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

 1

Despite the lack of a settled centre-back partnership, Spurs’ totals of 12 clean sheets and 45 goals conceded ranked a respectable joint-fifth and sixth respectively last season.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded456th
Clean sheets125th=
Shots conceded48612th
Shots in the box conceded32413th
Shots on target conceded15510th
Big chances conceded  554th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.0310th
Non-penalty expected goals conceded (non-pen xGC)42.157th

However, it was all a bit underwhelming in FPL, with all of their defenders failing to reach 90-points.

As a result, a Spurs defender won’t cost you more than £5.0m in 2021/22, which does suggest that they could offer value once we have established who the regular starters are.

Nuno mainly opted for a 3-4-3/3-5-2 shape at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the majority of his team’s attacks coming from wide areas.

If a similar system is used at Spurs, that would boost the appeal of their wing-backs.

Sergio Reguilón (£5.0m) ended his debut season in England with a respectable six assists and is at his best when bombing forward, while former Wolves man Matt Doherty (£5.0m) is also one to watch, having contributed eight goals and 15 assists across Nuno’s first two campaigns in the Premier League.

At this stage, it remains to be seen if one of the £4.5m options will emerge as a starter, but if they do, FPL managers will be handed a budget route into their backline.

THE ATTACK

Kane on the Golden Boot charge as Alli enters FPL differential conversation

Spurs ranked joint-third for goals scored (68) last season, but their inability to control games meant that they often had to rely on moments of individual brilliance to get them out of trouble:

    Thoughts please

    Bachman
    Trent, digne, dunk
    Salah, Bruno, buendia, raphinia
    Cavani, Watkins, iheanacho

    Foster, 4m, 4m, brownhil

I now the bench is cack, but I'm hoping I can get this team through the first 3 weeks and then WC in w4.

If you're only targetting the first 3 gameweeks, is Raphinha needed?

No City for that fixture against Norwich?

Like the team btw, just a general thought before I log off and go home 🙂

For a cheap as chips bench I’d want better than Buendia and Raphinha as the last two attackers.

Agree with not needing Raph early too. If that’s the plan.

Looks good to me - don't think you need to plan a GW4 WC though. Could do Dunk to a 4.5 BHA defender and then upgrade one of your fodder to 4.5 so you have a bit more cover.

That was an original plan. Also note sold on digne either. Was thinking that that g4 is after deadline day and euro players should all be fit and well by then. I'd like Shaw, chilwell and the Kane situation to be sorted ideally

I've also got a short-term squad until post-TDD WC. Inevitably it's similar to yours, but I'm without Leeds. Jota rather than Raphinha for me.

His Europa league record = 33 games, 13 goals, 8 assists... impressive.
An attack return every 153 mins in the Bundesliga... also impressive.

I think there will be 3-4 week burst where he is awesome. Maybe twice all season.

No idea when that will be - I’d rather see him perform first and then get him. But when he’s on 7.0m will seem like some bargain.

    Unpredictable midpriced forwards.

Wilson Antonio Watkins DCL and Bamford scored 69 goals between them last season if I'm counting right. What proportion of the goals would you expect to come against these teams - the confirmed bottom 9 ?

    Fulham
    SHU
    Palace
    Southampton
    Wolves
    WBA
    Brighton
    Burnley
    Newcastle

As it happens they scored slightly less than half of their goals against that type of oppo by my calculations. There were some variations but on average they scored at very similar rates against bottom dwellers and top eleven sides as a class.

Can't say I'm that surprised. They were all frustrating owns last season.

(Left Nacho off the list as he's the one who was significantly better as a flat track bully)

Plump and stick and forget fixtures? Don't get seduced by all the options and think you can hop and off to hit great fixture runs?

Common thought on here appears to be go Watkins early for fixture run and then hop off elsewhere. Watkins is one of those who was most consistent in his returns just dribbling in irrespective of opposition - 4 of his 14 goals came against bottom dwellers,

I apologise for introducing an idea. RMT to follow 🙂

It's one thing sticking and forgetting when they are 6.0-6.5, and the other when they are 7.5-8.0. That might be the only problem, but I agree otherwise, they're not the ones you should bother spending your transfers on.

Feels to me that people are expecting more of them this season than last almost on the basis that they have increased in price - treating them as a higher class of player.

I did make switches between them last season at one point and it kicked me in the teeth. Holding Watkins was the one right call I made there.

Could be of course that one or two of them will kick on and become predictable punishers of bottom teams - just not n the evidence of last season.

Bamford to DCL right after the gameweek I benched Soucek's 15 pointer. Before that gameweek I had like 14 straight green arrows, and from there I plateaued unitl wildcard.

Re Watkins, it think it comes from his and Villa's style of play. Counter attacking suits him and them better, imo. My initial thoughts are, double up on Buendia and Watkins, and then Buendia > ESR in gw 4.

Watkins is one who could be a different animal this season if Villa retain Grealish. It's possible that Watkins will become more central in attack and become a target man a la DCL with Buendia taking on some of his creative duties,

Watkins is a converted winger and still learning CF play imo. Look at his heat map and he spends a good deal of time wide still.

You make a good point Pingi.
Much better to set and forget your budget + mid priced assets and instead switch your premiums based on fixtures for captaincy maximisation.

      My rankings at the moment are;

      1. Watkins - stick and forget. Yep fixtures are good but also he’s super consistent and plays all the games.

      2. Antonio - start with him. His rate of return is really good and if he’s not injured now I’ll take him with those fixtures.

      3. Wilson - love him but unsure of how Newcastle will fare without Willock.

      4. Iheanacho - only rotation concern has him here - otherwise probably be 2nd

      5. Bamford - the extra 0.5 puts me a little off and that he seemed to tire heavily toward the end of last year. Maybe rotation? Also Raphs price makes him seem a better avenue into Leeds

      6. DCL - wait and see what’s going on…both confused and concerned about Everton.

I would just swap 3 and 4, but otherwise agree with this. I think what Nacho showed towards the end of last season was just great.

If I see them set up with 2 strikers in preseason I might bring him right in. Currently only starting 2x with a 4.5 on the bench.

(But realistically I’m a WHU fan so Antonio is almost a lock for me…I just want the fun of owning him while fit)

As a Palace fan I'm avoiding Antonio. He could and should have scored 4 against us last season - missed the lot as I recall. Very erratic finisher.

I owned him at the time 🙂

      2. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

I'd have Antonio much further down the list. There's nothing special about his rate of returns for me and he misses his fair share of chances and more.

Nacho at the top for me - not least because he plays for the best side.

Watkins I agree on but would put him equal with Jim whose consistency he mirrored last season. Might even prefer Jim

        1. RogDog_jimmy

          Oh yeah Jimi.
          He’s up there too.

It’s really guess work after a certain point. My research was showing all are pretty much the same except Iheanacho being noticeably better - it’s just with Barnes, Maddison, Vardy, Daka…want to see how they actually line up. If he only plays 60mins, or comes on for 30…I’d rather a 90ish minute player.

Complete guesswork of course - pricing is correct for me insofar as they are all in the range,

Like you I have DCL at the bottom of the pile but he could very easily start this season as he did last.

              I wouldn't start where you're coming from 😉

'Unpredictable midpriced forwards' by their very nature are not season keepers. They have spurts - you hope to jump on and off and the right times. With no form to assess, you're looking at fixtures at this time.
              Watkins GW1-3
              Antonio GW1-4
              DCL GW1-6
              Bamf GW5-15

If the opponents you list come in a streak of fixtures, jump on. If they're mixed up too heavily with tough fixtures, ignore. That's how I reason anyway.

              1. pingissimus
                • 5 Years
                2 years, 8 months ago

Thing is they don't perform on fixtures - at least on the evidence of last season. Returns come when they come. Also every transfer is an effective minus 4. Bringing in DCL for a really plum DGW?

Watkins for one was unpredictable but only in terms of which teams he returned against. His consistency was pretty much the equal of Jiminez - the ultimate season keeper in my book.

I'm looking at the category below for hopping on and off. Toney Pukki Welbeck Tekkers etc - players who can match the 7.5 returns but likely only in a form spurt and are makeweights.

Could well be right. I'm planning short term until I WC. Then I'll have Kane and maybe another newbie premium in a 2-up-top and bypass the midprices altogether.

Yep seen your TDD strategy - adds up on the scenario TDD is a big one.

In all likelihood I too will be going far earlier than I intend and that's one reason why I'm yet to try and put together a "definite" draft - still working on my overall strategy.

Bigger issue for Varane is whether he can cope in the Premiership ; seen nothing to say that he can't, but playing Championship teams every week bar a handful of games a year is a big difference.

    TAA | Chilwell | Stones | Firpo | Lamptey
    Salah | Son | Sancho | Raphinha | Brownhill
    Watkins | Antonio | Davis

Firpo & Lamptey rotating with the other on the bench along with Brownhill and Davis

Starting to think I'm a little too light on my bench.

I think you’re fine. 1 playing defender for sure and 1 playing attacker.
      Seems plenty to me.

      Pretty nice looking team.

Most of the stats and stuff I see tell me Meslier is the best 5.0. Save points and BAPs more than making up for the few extra CSs that MU might get.
Would max out Leeds slots for you though.

        2x keepers!

You get a lot of cleansheet points from Shaw & Bruno, in addition to their 100% set piece coverage

If Varane hits the ground running, Henderson won't be getting any save points either (as well as the constant spectre of DDG)

I could see Meslier being this season's Martinez - serious save points & clean sheets

This could be one of the rare occasions I start with a GK who's more than 4.5, just have one of those little gut feelings about Meslier this season - what the guy is doing at only 21 yaers of age is phenomenal

      No save points. No BPs.
Takes a slot when Shaw and Bruno are already template picks.

Varane joining - the main benefit in FPL terms won't be the keeper or CBs. I'm doubling with Shaw and AWB. Higher D-line, Sancho linking with the Biss. Could give TAA/Robbo a run for their money.

        1. Jarnathan
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

This is a very interesting double up. It's like a super cheap Robbo / TAA. Do you think AWB is going to be getting much more forward under this scenario?

It will make it impossible to bring in Cavani without major surgery.

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

I've got Sancho, so Cavani should be do-able. My thinking about AWB is he hasn't had decent, reliable inside rights to partner with, but now with Sancho he should be able to work up a relationship, so I am expecting a better season from him.

I haven't really looked at it closely, but I feel like they didn't concede a lot of goals but they conceded in a lot of matches, meaning they didn't get that many clean sheets, but they didn't concede more than 1 very often. So that stat might be misleading.

      Have been pondering this

Thought I read they are short at the back too in the centre - at least in terms of cover. They'll be buying of course but as it stands without Lingz and possibly losing Rice they look middling at best to me and the chemistry could be off.

            Hardly spent anything last year.

Transfers in - Benrhama, Dawson, Coufal, Soucek - for 55m

Transfers out - Haller, Diangana, Ajeti - for 45m

55 mill is a pretty decent spend I'd have said.:-)

But confess I thought you spent a bit more and had forgot about the outgoings. So got that bit wrong.

Is there decent money in the kitty? Had thought that it was limited this year and Moyes had his hands tied and assumed it was from last year's spend.

                Nah owners are cheap buggers.

There was a big hoohaa over not spending the money from selling Diangana on attackers before the season started, but in the end Moyes got it all right.

Add in a few million for the Lingard loan and it was a remarkable set of moves for us.

I think I remember reading there was 50-80m set aside for squad improvements for this year but nothing has happened yet.

Have seen Areola on loan-to-buy linked, Matthias Periera too. I’d like them moves. Oh and Tammy Abraham but I think he’s linked to a few.
Doing those three would be good. Need midfield help too. And defense. Lol. All the spots.

Pereira would be ace but aren't you still heavy in the midfield creator department?

That's a very handy budget if true. It's a good season to be in the market. Look in the right directions and there are plenty of deals out there.

Just don't try and buy a defender from Brighton 🙂

Without Rice we’re in trouble for sure. But not like that move would happen in secret. We’ll know about it.

as Chelsea proved last season you can have the best XI in the league but if you are managed by a clown you'll still fail to even reach Champions league

Rice is way less important than a long term striker.

This look OK? Hunch that ESR will break through in earnest this season which, for bench-fodder price, is hard to resist:

    Sanchez
    TAA - Robbo - James - Coufal
    Salah - Bruno - Son - ESR
    Watkins - Pukki

    Steele - Brownhill - Manquillo - Obafemi

Will bring Shaw in for James in GW2.

      Solid

Would personally hold off so much at the back from the off and not try and get ahead of the curve on the cs sides. Easy enough to switch cash back there when form is established,

ESR as bench fodder price only works if you have him as the bench fodder - 2 other 4.5 attackers means he’ll be playing mostly (which I like myself).

Think this is good with Robbo and Son in it.

How have Man Utd spent £400m+ in the last 3 seasons and still need midfielder & striker. Laughable really.

But they’ll still cry about how much city have spent when after they win the league again

They spend a lot of money, but City spend way more money. City will keep buying until Pep wins the CL

Its hard to believe Pep has had 8 consecutive seasons with the resources of Bayern Munich & Man City at his disposal, and has no champions leagues to show for it

Any old clown could have managed it with prime Messi, Xavi & Iniesta, poor old Pep just hasn't been able to do it without them despite a blank chequebook

Maybe this season if he gets another 160m player added to his billionaire's squad

This simple isn't true. If you include this summer United's net spend in the last 5 seasons is higher than City's.

Pepe for 80m and White for 50m. Laughable you say?

Pepe had 23 G/A last season and White is a 23 yr old CB with a high ceiling.

Man Utd spent 200m on Di Maria, Depay, Mkhitaryan and Schneiderlin.

There's usually an underlying reason when someone adds goals + assists together to give you a figure. In this it's because Pepe is one of the biggest flops in PL history.

2)Double United defense (Bruno, Shaw, Henderson/Maguire)

I have not drafted very much up to this point, but here's what I'm on at the moment:

    Martinez
    TAA / Shaw / Coufal
    Salah / Son / Buendia / Raphinha
    Cavani / Antonio / Watkins

    Gunn // Chambers / Veltman / Brownhill

What is bad about this & could be improved? (Obvs. No Bruno & Digne currently.)

Looks very solid indeed. Son doesn't perform well without Kane - or didn't. I'd want to know more about Kane and formations under Nuno before committing.

Van Dijk, Trent, Robertson are probably better than Varane, Can't attack Bissaka and Shaw

I'd argue City and Chelsea have better defences also.

So many things going in Shaw's favour now. Both his offensive and defensive points should improve on last season.

My MID in 3-5-2 formation that I will use.
    Salah / Son / Grealish / Barnes + 1 rotational = Zaha for first 2 GWs

I have Zaha for GW2, but instead of buying him after GW1 (and using some wild punt for GW1 only) I rather keep him for 2 GWs and keep free hit, as I will adjust my squad to what form I see in first matches. Would be nice if CHE conceded anyway, as my mini-league opponents have their defenders since the beginning.
