FPL team guide 2021/22 – Wolverhampton Wanderers: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season concludes with this preview of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After three successful seasons winning promotion to, and then establishing themselves in, the Premier League under manager Nuno Espírito Santo Wolves’ momentum stalled last term as significant injuries to key players such as Raul Jiménez (£7.5m) and Jonny (£4.5m) took their toll at both ends of the pitch.

The Molineux side’s final position of 13th was a significant drop from the two seventh-place finishes they had managed since rejoining the top flight and in the end, Santo’s departure by mutual consent seemed strangely unsurprising.

Former Benfica boss Bruno Lage is the new man in the hot seat. Wolves assets, particularly in defence, have generally dropped in FPL price this year, but could Lage’s attacking philosophy take the club back into contention for a European place?

We assess the Fantasy appeal of Wolves ahead of 2021/22 in this piece, which takes Opta player and team data from our Premium Members Area.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

THE DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals conceded5212th
Clean sheets1014th

Shots in the box conceded29810th
Shots on target conceded1529th
Big chances conceded  6710th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)49.819th

To many FPL managers, it felt last season as if Wolves defenders were underperforming the price tags they had acquired following strong performances in the previous couple of campaigns. It is certainly true that all their team defensive numbers were down with positions falling from around fifth in 2019/20 to around tenth in 2020/21.

However, the drop-off was felt more acutely in Fantasy games as Wolves fell from equal fourth in the crucial clean sheets statistic to 14th overall. That the actual difference was ten shut-outs instead of 13 illustrates that 12 clean sheets is something of a par score in FPL.

As the table above shows, no fewer than six out of 20 Premier League teams kept exactly a dozen clean sheets last season while three further teams kept 11.

For Wolves, both actual and expected goals conceded worsened by about 12. The most significant contributor to that seems to have been big chances conceded which declined from a league-leading 47 the season before to a tenth-placed 72 this time around.

Shots in the box conceded increased by around 16%, too.

Above: Wolves defence 2020/21 (left) vs. Wolves defence 2019/20 (right)

The home and away performances of the Wolves defence last season were mirror images in overall Fantasy terms, with the absence of crowds seemingly a significant factor in the negation of home advantage. Both at Molineux and on the road Wolves kept five clean sheets, conceded one or two goals ten times and three or more goals on four occasions.

It should be emphasised that, even facing disruption and a loss of form, the Wolves rearguard only reverted from being one of the most secure in the league to simply average. They were by no means terrible which suggests that a standard price of £4.5m for their defenders could be a sound investment if there is even a small bounce back – although Lage’s attacking mindset is a concern on the clean sheet front.

THE ATTACK

Total    Rank v other Premier League sides
Goals    3616th
Shots    46310th
Shots in the box28111th
Shots on target15311th
Big chances46=18th
Expected goals (xG)36.8717th

Up front, a couple of statistics slightly improved from 2019/20. Wolves managed two more shots (admittedly a lot less than 1% of their total) and also seven more shots on target which was enough to move them up a place in the rankings.

However, almost everything else fell dramatically and again, particularly at the business end. Goals scored went from 51 (=8th) to 36 (16th), though that total was almost exactly in line with the number of expected goals (36.87), and big chances again seemed the obvious culprit, almost halving from 83 (6th) to 46 (18th).

Moise Kean got another start for Everton. Chances he starts GW1 over DCL while he re-gains fitness from the holidays?

I'm happy to put Ait Nouri on the bench with no plan to use him GW1-3, but generally those first 3 games are a good opportunity to observe and assess.

2Ft with Mahrez once he's rotated or Son if he bombs without Kane.
I'd just question the choice of goalkeeper there. Rest is fine for a short stint before WC.

Pretty good. I think Watkins for the start makes way too much sense. He's nailed, with 3 good fixtures and a new creator behind him in Buendia.

Would definitely pick him over Wilson. Otherwise, it's fairly solid. I'm not personally a huge fan of ESR. I don't think he'll start most games, but I know others feel differently. If he flops you're in trouble.

Could be. There's no real pattern to when he'll pop up with a goal. I'd see Harrison as delivering more reliably, albeit he has tougher earlier fixtures. Double-up with Raph, got Ayling? Wouldn't put me off, personally.

The point is nobody knows. Last season it was Ferguson people were raving about, then he got injured and never played a minute. 3 weeks before the deadline no one had mentioned Mitchell. At Leeds, Ayling commanded the attention. Some Leeds fans flagged up Dallas as Bielsa's pet, never dropped, plays anywhere, but even they didn't anticipate him doing a Lundstram.

      1. Fordy40

But sometimes you do know (injuries aside). Mitchell had definitely been shouted, he had played all the pre-season games and was in the lions share of squads. The year before everyone knew Lunds was a midfielder but listed as a defender.

wouldn’t be confident that Greenwood starts many games, or that Sarr will get many attacking returns in a defence-minded Watford team regardless of their opening fixtures. Apart from that, it’s good.

        You going with this?

TAA Robbo Veltman Ayling is 0.5 more. But is better IG for atleast the first 6.

Castagne isnt nailed and Spurs CB's are atrocius even though Reguilon has good potential. Would rather play Robbo for 5 weeks out of the six instead of rotating between Reguilon and Castagne.

I am not decided on my tactic yet, but I am having quite fun with this one. If you go for the lowest price in defence, that's 23.5 + 8.5 for GKs + 4.5 for one fodder ( he won't play 3/5/2 or 4/3/3 ), then you get 63.5 for 7 players in MID and FWD.

The question is, whether the money invested on top in the MID/FWD will bring more offensive returns than those in DEF. Consider having Fofana over Castagne and Konate over TAA. You save 3 mil. Will 3 mil in MID/FWD bring more points then let's say... the 5-7 assists they TAA + Cas. can bring in those 11 GWs?

I like some drafts that come out of this thinking:

Most likely I will upgrade Konate at least to Robertson and Fofana to Castagne/Pereira. While I would keep the rest cheap an rotate.
It still boosts MID/FWD pretty decently, as you can have decent shout on 5.5 ESR or Dallas and still keep many premiums / semi-premiums.

I don't have him but think he'll be fine. There are over 30 days between the Euro final and start of the new season and Sancho barely featured. Besides even if he doesn't play GW1 if it's a long-term pick I don't see the issue once you have cover. Lots of people avoided ManUtd and City assets last season because they started in GW2 but it also means you're already using up you're first one or two transfers before the season has started. I had Bruno from the start last season so it meant I didn't need to do that

Is there genuinely no interest at all in Sterling?

11.0m is expensive, but he was fantastic at the Euros and with Aguero out I can definitely see him leading the attack occasionally. How amazing would it be to cap him vs NOR and see him a hat-trick.

Is this one of those situations where we look back and think - why didn't any of us pick him?

Hard to know what his playing time will be like. Largely out of favour for the end of last season for City, Foden has been getting more and more starts and add in the interest in Grealish (assuming he's desired to play LW and not behind a striker) and it's very tough to know where he fits in.

been in and out of my recent drafts...been burned by Sterling many times but still very tempted to start with him after his Euros showing

All that said, downgrading Salah/Bruno to play the Pep conundrum, assuming he'll outscore those as a captain, just doesn't appeal early doors - especially when Pool & Utd's fixtures are so good. It's almost asking for trouble.

I don't love Bruno that much so I think it's fairly reasonable risk to take by going without him.

I don't fancy Bruno either. I think the value's with Son.

Yeah the value is with Son. But the fixtures aren't really and there's quite a bit of uncertainty.

Why not start with a big explosive diff like Sterling and if he fails you have the pick of the emerging mid (Havertz, Son, Grealish etc)

Give Sterling a super short leash (2 weeks) and if not, you can flip to Son in GW3 just in time for WAT.

Is there something up with Zaha? I like him as a FPL pick.

Done some tinkering, with three nailed 3000+ minutes defenders perhaps can afford the risk of 2 X 4.0 defensive fodder.

        Bachmann
        TAA, Robertson, Wan Bis
        Maddison, Mount, Zaha, Son, Salah
        Nacho, Antonio

        Foster, Davis, Amartey, Manquilo

To be fair Zaha always plays well when the transfer window is open, and is in a team that looks to be playing more attacking now so I think he could do well. I will say I'm not too fond of the midfield overall, Mount I think will be a great shout if Chelsea sign Haaland or someone else though but if not I think there are better options, Maddison I can just never make my mind up on, he has these bursts of form but also prone to injury.

But it's different and I like seeing something different

Konate - Steal or no deal?

Let's say all Liverpool defenders would be at 100% fitness...vvd anchor the defence...who is first pick playing next to him?

If Konate is which I beleive it must make him interesting right?

Doesn't seem to have much of a career goal threat (6 goals in 117 games) so if you are looking to cover off Pool clean sheets it could be some value but I prefer Shaw/James/Digne at that price who offer clean sheets and attacking potential.
