I’ll start with a short story. This time last season, Chelsea were spending money like they were Disney and, as a fan (of Chelsea, though I do like Disney too), it was hard not to get caught up in that excitement and to want to be part of it in every way possible. Of course, for me, this included picking as many as possible in my Fantasy Premier League team and, as a result, I tripled up on Chelsea assets with Timo Werner (£9.0m), Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Reece James (£5.5m) all featuring in my Gameweek 1 team.

Of course, Chelsea went on to become champions of Europe, thus proving me 100% correct in my beliefs and to be a person of quite unnatural foresight and wisdom. So, thanks for reading, and tune in next time when I’ll be talking ab-

Okay, while Chelsea did indeed become champions of Europe, this eventual success was not necessarily reflected in their early-season performances or the output of their players from an FPL perspective. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t terrible by any means, even the much-maligned Timo Werner was averaging about 5.0 points per game up until Gameweek 10. The problem was, they didn’t deliver consistently, sustainably and, crucially, as much as more established players (Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) was kind enough to make this point early on and immediately punish me for not picking him with a Gameweek 1 hat-trick).

Salah

Even then, I held on to my Chelsea assets, despite their declining output and emerging line-up uncertainties. I justified this to myself by their good run of fixtures which, surely, would get them back on track. When that didn’t happen, I convinced myself that, since other people were ditching their Chelsea players, the best thing for me to do ‘strategically’ would be to hold on to them so that, when they did eventually burst into life, they would offer the best possible source of differential points, thus propelling me up the table.

Of course, the opposite happened, Chelsea assets declined further, both in terms of points output and in value, which in turn reduced my options for transferring them out. The net effect was that I’d set the foundation for what was to become my worst ever fantasy football season.

So what happened here and what can we learn from it?

£20.5m to spend on 4 defenders of which 3 have to start...do you?
    A) Spread it evenly (£5.5m + 3 x £5.0m) and rotate 3 from 4?
    B) £6.0m + £5.5m and a 2 x £4.5m rotation pairing
    C) £4.0m not playing sub + £16.5m spread on 3 players that play every week.

    So something like...
    A) TAA, Digne, Cash, Tierney (Reguilon)
    B) TAA, Cancelo, Digne, Veltman (Ayling)
    C) TAA, Digne, James, Shaw (£4.0m)

Interesting. I listed the options in my preferred order.
The 2 from 3 rotation between Tierney, Cash and Reguilon gives excellent fixtures in opening 5 GWs.

In FanTeam. Midfielders get 1 extra point for playing 90 mins.

So Dallas would have scored more points in FanTeam as a midfielder instead of as a defender...

is it dumb- £2m itb to give me flexibility and thinking Kai to Sonny an option

    Bachman Foster
    Trent Digne Cancelo Ayling Webster
    Mbuemo Mahrez Havertz Salah Raphina
    Wilson Antonio Obefemi

I wasnt set on Toney but given Ings signing and unsure i want two injury prone guys up top an thins the 7.5m options imo. I am thinking Wilson to Toney and Mbeumo to another 6ish mid, Sarr, ESR, Gross etc. Or even Mahrez to Bruno

    1. UnluckyXI

Wilson has a slight injury but should be fine, Toney safer bet there just in my opinion.

You could turn Mbuemo into Buendia or Bailey as they stand to benefit from Villa's stronger front line.

I am not, but assuming two of them are Watkins & Ings it gives you good option to monitor DCL, Antonio, Wilson and swap for which ever doesn't play if Watkins & Ings are going to alternate not play as a pair.

My team was so close then the Fofana & Ings news happened!

    Right now I am on:

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA, Coufal, Shaw (White, 4.5)
    Salah, Son, Mahrez, ESR, (Brownhill)
    DCL, Antonio, Watkins

    A) Stick
    B) Toney & Buendia for ESR & Watkins (assuming he'll share minutes and goals with Ings now)

Can't squeeze to a 6.5 so who do we think is the pick of the 6.0 mids?
Is it best to go with last seasons successful Harrison, take a punt on the West Ham minefield or go with Sarr and hope he hits the ground running. Or even someone that I missed?

    1. Invincibles
      • 11 Years

Harrison is a very good pick but wouldn’t double up with him and Raphinha personally.

Unfortunately can't get the .5 for Raph with my current draft setup so Harrison would be there for some Leeds attacking coverage

Gross started every game from GW19 or something last year so he is nailed

Fornal will start but depends on how WH set up as something play wing backs but no lingard improves his chances

      Harrison
      Sarr
      Mbeumo
      ESR
      Gross
      Trinaco

All good picks imo, i like one slot in this bracket as you have options. The one you start with depends on your style but if you dont have a leeds attacker, 100% go Harrison

I have a team of Salah so have another captaincy spot for Son or Fernandez. I plan to do Mahrez to Sanchez GW3 whichever option I go for to jump off Pep Roulette.
    Which looks better:
    A: Son, Rafinha, DCL
    B: Fernandes, Sarr, Toney

It's a tough decision and ideally my initial planned structures these guys wouldn't have to be transferred out till atleast GW5.
A has the advantage of covering more strikers, but getting KDB or an expensive striker would be difficult without sacrificing TAA or Salah
B has the advantage of Fernandes but Sarr and Toney have more limited options for jumping off.

    1. UnluckyXI
      • 8 Years

Monitor the Kane situation, Son scored well when Kane has been out. I also think A is more safe with Sarr & Toney having less prem experience.

Too light up front? I don’t want to gamble on Watkins personally and it’s a big jump to DCL from Toney.
