Can Cristian Romero boost the clean sheet prospects of Spurs’ FPL defenders?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Cristian Romero (£5.0m) following his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta.

How many people would believe that, throughout the 17-month reign of supposed defensive guru José Mourinho, Spurs lost more tackles in the Premier League than any other side?

Answer: A lot of Spurs fans.

Whilst such a stat may seem eye-rubbingly unplausible to those not paying full attention, it’s indicative of a softness that has blighted Tottenham’s defensive stats over the past two seasons.

Since the dizzying heights of peak Mauricio Pochettino, when Spurs finished the 2016/17 season second in the Premier League having conceded a league-low 26 goals the entire campaign, things have steadily declined at the back.

The loan-to-buy signing of Romero from Atalanta looks sure to add some much-needed steel to incumbent Nuno Espírito Santo’s Tottenham side. But whilst the full-throttled Argentinian may well prove the answer to a faltering Spurs defence, how will his performances, and indeed place within a new Spurs system, play out for Fantasy managers?

THE HISTORY

Born in Argentina’s second city of Córdoba, Romero spent his fledgling years with hometown side Belgrano, eventually breaking into the first team at just 18.

He made 16 Argentinian top-flight appearances before taking the much-trodden route from his homeland to Serie A when Genoa acquired a then 20-year-old Romero ahead of the 2018-19 season.

There, he quickly established himself as a permanent fixture, predominantly on the left-hand side of a central back three, marshalled by Domenico Criscito.

Notable was the physicality to his game that defied his tender years and appearances. After receiving a booking in the ninth minute of his debut away to Juventus, he would go one better on his home bow against Udinese – sent off for two bookable offences after earlier rising to head his side into a 2-1 lead.

Despite this early misdemeanour, Romero’s ruggedness and love of close combat endeared him to not only the Genoese fans but also caught the eye of bigger clubs. Notably that of then Juve director of football, Fabio Paratici. Yes, the same guy who is now in charge of reinvigorating Tottenham.

Purchasing Romero at the end of that first season in Serie A for a little over £20m, the Old Lady sent Romero back to Genoa for the 2019/20 season, where he made 57 Serie A appearances in total for Il Grifone before spending last season on loan at high flying Atalanta.

Undertaking the same role in a three at the Bergamo club that he had enjoyed at Genoa, the Argentine flourished, picking up the Serie A defender of the year last season (no small feat) as Atalanta ransacked their way to a third-place finish behind the two Milan clubs.

DEFENSIVE POWERHOUSE

The accolades rained upon Romero in Italy are enough to suggest that he will be an important figure for Spurs this season. And whilst he looks certain to offer a degree of attractiveness to would-be Fantasy investors, perhaps his real impact will be found in how his presence may allow others to flourish.

So, what are the positives?

First, he is an interception demon – averaging 3.4 every 90 minutes in Serie A in the season just gone. A repeat of such numbers would comfortably see him at the top of indexes in the Premier League. For comparison, of players that featured in over 25 games in the Premier League last season, Liam Cooper (£4.5m) led the way with most interceptions per 90 mins. With one made every 35.9 minutes, that equates to a mere 2.5 interceptions per game in comparison.

Whilst undoubtedly feeding his own Baseline Bonus Point potential, Romero’s high press action and breaking up of play could prove fruitful should Spurs be able to counter-attack opponents effectively.  In such cases, one can see the likes of Sergio Reguilón (£5.0m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and perhaps fellow new boy Bryan Gil (£6.0m) profiting should the ball be released quickly.

Another standout stat earmarking his defensive dominance is his uncompromising ability aerially. Last season, in all competitive games, Romero averaged over 4.0 aerial duals won per 90 minutes, with only the likes of James Tarkowski (£5.0m) in the same stratosphere in Premier League terms.

Of the teams that stayed up, only Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Leeds United and Burnley conceded more headed attempts last season than Spurs, with ten of their 45 league goals conceded coming by way of headers. Thus, the addition of Romero in this regard can only help to eradicate such concessions boosting clean sheet potential for both him and his defensive colleagues.

          I don’t know. It’s tough.

I’m just going to play the TAA/Tsimikas double up until it becomes redundant and Tsimikas can take his rightful place as the 4.0 at the end of my bench.

    Is 4-5-1 a bad move?

    Bachmann (Foster)

    TAA, Shaw, Maguire, White (Manquillo)

Salah, Mahrez, Mane, Greenwood, Smith Rowe

    Ings (Obafemi, Davis)

Or is it better to stick with a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3? Help would be greatly appreciated

It is the fact all your subs are non-playing. Way too risky.

Depends on how nailed and healthy your players are. Ings with two fodders is a injury forced transfer waiting to happen.

It also leaves you with only Manquillo in the bench to cover any rotations, injuries, covids and bans... With totally nailed players and a totally nailed sub it could work for a while.

Not been on my radar at all to be honest. I keep him as a potential back-up for that £6.0m - £7.0 mid slot. Have gone with Benrahma for now, with potential swap to the likes of Willock & Sarr.

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards Tsimikas not being worth it. While I appreciate that over the course of GW1 and GW2 Tsimikas + Raphina + Ings likely score more points than Ayling/White + Jota + Toney, it leaves your team very inflexible going forward.

You would realistically only want Tsimikas for the first 2 GWks and you will sell ahead of Chelsea GW3. That forces you into a defensive transfer vs something along the lines of Mahrez + Jota > Son + Raphina.

While you do arguably score more points over the first couple weeks, going forward flexibility is more important imo if you intend to hold onto your WC until GW7 for example.

Agree. Also if Liverpool concede and he does not get any attacking returns, you going to feel pretty bad with a 4.0 player who could drop in price if everyone gets rid.

      1. Zimo
        • 5 Years

If he starts no one's getting rid of him even if he blanks. Instead the casuals will see omg a starting Liverpool 4.0 defender and start getting him in.

I wouldn't mind the casuals going for him. Come GW4 - 5 Robbo should be back and Tsimi dropped. I agree that those who had Tsimi will make some marginal profit on him (say £0.1 - £0.2) but I can live with that loss.

Tsimi is a great options for teams that have set-out to play 4-4-2 for example imo. Prefer to have my flexibility in midfield, given that I will play a 3-5-2.

Each team is different I suppose!

Tsimikas needs to be sold to collect that profit from him. Therefore max. tv gain with him is 0.1 mitb. He won't rise to 4.4.

He is already owned by 12% managers so if he doesen't give a cleansheet his price is getting dropped and if he gives an attacking return then not many more people will put him in their teams as already about 12 percent managers own him. However, if you think taking that risk for a few games is worth it then sure, he is a decent option.

        This

Allows cheap entry into the pool defence - the way they play expect reasonable assist potential

Allows for mid priced mid to son

So in my mind it’s son vs taa, with pool CS covered

Considering having him only for the first couple of weeks. I don't think it is an issue for me to have a 4.0 defender on the bench once he is dropped.

With Robbo out for 4-6 weeks, he will be playing first 4/5 games atleast.
A 4mn enabler, if guaranteed to play is fine. If a 4mn asset gives me a stream of 2 pointers and 2 returns in 6 weeks, I am ok

Why do you need to sell him? He's a 4.0m defender.

The only reason you have to sell is if you want Jota and frankly, once the season gets going, I expect Jota to be less not more appealing since Firmino will be back.

I explained why I don't think it'll factor in. Unless you're being sarcastic because if they really are the 4th best team, then I wouldn't want to triple up anyway.

There's not much downside to it. I'll play him until he's dropped. He sits on my bench until my GW7 WC. In that time he might increase in price and then maybe decrease back to 4m. All good in my book.

By that logic you'd want to triple up on the top 3 teams first. Which then leaves just 2 places for the 4th best place so u don't really need to triple up.

If the main argument is flexibility, then surely you should spend less in defence and more in midfield/attack? That's where the bandwagons typically are. Having taa, salah, bruno and potentially son/mahrez is not a very good setup for flexibility early on, in my opinion.

Tsimikas is a risk, but at such a low price and low down side, it surprises me that the consensus is to avoid.

Agreed. If you had Robertson you wouldn’t bench him so why bench tsimikas. I reckon that could easily be a 0-0 game

Bench fodder once robbo is fit. That's what you'd expect from a 4.0 defender.

If you really want to get 3 Liverpool players in, then by approx gameweek 4 you'll have a better idea of transfers you wanna be making, so a double/triple transfer including tsmikas out shouldn't be too painful

    13. Toonmad
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

But people will happily stick in a 4m fodder who plays for one of the worst teams in the league and then let them rot as 3rd sub. But now there's a potential 4m starting player for one of the best teams in the league the question is asked, is he worth it???

There's no guarantee Robbo will be back starting GW4. I reckon it will take longer. It often does with these type of injuries and Klopp won't rush him back since he's played an insane amount of matches the past year and this is why they bought Tsimikas.

    15. Cognitive Dissonance
      • 6 Years

The only reason I see for not getting Tsimikas is if you've already got 2 Liverpool (Salah + TAA) and you're concerned about Jota going on one of his streaks. I've got Greenwood and initially wanted the flexibility to move to Jota, but the fact that Firmino is back earlier than expected (a brace in the last friendly) means that Jota isn't nailed any more. I'm definitely persuaded by this thread to bring Tsimi - doesn't seem to be any significant downside.

I believe he is for several reasons:

Played well in pre-season game last week (got an assist). Was admittedly bullied off a header for the goal conceded but he's still learning

I noticed he's on corners from the left (as we tend to prefer out-swingers) especially useful with VVD back in the team

For the two games he is likely to play we have great fixtures (norwich and Burnley) couldn't pick much better fixtures imo

The other 4.0 def options are fairly limited (Amarty for Lei but can't see that lasting long)

Can become bench fodder when Robbo returns (likely for Chelsea or after the int break)

More than likely we will be WC'ing around gwk 6/7 ish, so can easily change structure and get rid at that point

He does block getting a 3rd Liverpool player (Salah, TAA + one extra) most people with be looking to Jota for this third spot.

A few things I have in my mind regarding Jota:
Likely to start first 2 or 3 based on pre-season team lineups although I think he is likely to get 70 mins-ish (Can see him being subbed around this time. Especially if the game is already won, which you could anticipate could be the case for first 2). We have a few players who have had good pre-seasons who can come on for him (Bobby, Ox (who has had an incredible pre-season), Elliot, Minamino)

There are some good 7.5 mid alternatives (my favourite is Gundo with KDB out - last year his best returns was when KDB was out injured. but you also have the likes of Mount, Greenwood, Pepe, Barnes 7.0 etc)

one more point, Klopp was optimistic on the results from the scan on Robbo injury. However, I imagine we will proceed with caution and make sure he is fully fit before playing him again as he is so important to us, we wouldn't want to risk a re-occurring injury. Ankle ligaments can be slow to repair

4m playing fodder in a top team, of course he's worth it, rough plan is to play him now which gives me a chance to assess Livramento and see if he gets much game time, if he does then its an easy and potentially profitable swap with very little downside

Thinking of bench boosting in GW1. Thoughts on the following?

    Sanchez

    TAA / Shaw / Coufal
