MANCHESTER UNITED 5-1 LEEDS UNITED

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) x3, Mason Greenwood (£7.5m), Fred (£5.0m)| Luke Ayling (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Paul Pogba (£7.5m) x4, Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) | Stuart Dallas (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Fernandes x3, Pogba x2, Greenwood x1

No penalties? No problem.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.5m) recorded his biggest ever Fantasy Premier League haul with a 20-point return against Leeds on Saturday, hitting a hat-trick in a 5-1 demolition of Marcelo Bielsa’s troops.

That his goals all came from open play was even more encouraging; there was no reliance on spot-kicks here, with the Portugal international thrice breaking beyond the last man to score. Given the mild pre-season concern about the much-touted move to a 4-3-3 and a possible deeper role, his frequent runs behind the Leeds backline were encouraging.

While Fernandes won’t encounter many more opponents as obliging as Robin Koch (£4.5m), the German centre-half who was covering for the not fully match-fit Kalvin Phillips in front of the back four, the next three fixtures are almost as good as it gets:

Excluding relegated clubs, Newcastle and Southampton had the two worst Premier League defences for goals conceded in 2021, heading into Gameweek 1.

Wolves, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase and keen to show more attacking ambition under their new head coach.

With Fernandes and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) both already owned by more than 50% of FPL managers, Paul Pogba (£7.5m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) threw their hat into the ring for more Fantasy investment.

Pogba hit a remarkable four assists from five key passes, while Greenwood, again playing centrally for United, restored the hosts’ advantage with a breakaway goal and could have had an assist to his name, had Pogba not spurned the big chance he created.

“The way he burst away for that second goal. That’s a man compared to a boy that was in the first team two years ago. I’m delighted with what he has done in pre-season to get his fitness up.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Mason Greenwood

The pair are £7.5m for a reason.

In the inconsistent Pogba’s case, experience has taught us that he could just as easily turn in a rotten performance in Gameweek 2 – or be shunted back to a deeper role.

With Greenwood, it’s the return to match fitness of Edinson Cavani (£8.5m), whenever that might be, and the similar wealth of competition if he’s moved back to right-wing duties. Cavani and Anthony Martial‘s (£8.0m) lack of match-sharpness, Marcus Rashford‘s (£9.5m) injury and Jadon Sancho‘s (£9.5m) likely ousting of another player, Daniel James (£6.0m), at least ensures that the short-term prospects remain positive.

“Today was just about ‘go out there and enjoy yourself’ because he had 45 minutes against Everton, which wasn’t his best. We gave him the freedom of roaming wherever you want to go and get on the ball. I can’t remember the last time that happened [getting four assists in a single game] but Paul’s got that quality and, when you’ve got runners willing to make runs and create space for others, it opens up.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Paul Pogba

Pogba, it must be said, ended 2020/21 in fine form, so Saturday’s display hasn’t entirely come out of the blue. After an excellent performance against AC Milan on the left flank in March, the France international went on to bank four FPL assists from Gameweek 30 onwards, mostly being used in the same role.

Above: Paul Pogba’s rate of chances created from Gameweeks 1-29 (left) and Gameweek 30 onwards (right).

Shaw might have ended up with a one-pointer but there was enough from an attacking sense (a shot that went narrowly wide and two chances created) to encourage owners, while the capture of Raphael Varane will surely help stiffen up a backline that conceded to every team ranked fifth or below in 2020/21.

As for Leeds, they (perhaps naively) attempted to give as good as they got at Old Trafford and came unstuck again. But easier tests await from Gameweek 5 and the likes of Phillips and Junior Firpo (£5.0m) are still to come into the starting XI following disrupted pre-seasons, while general fitness levels – such a key part of Bielsa’s approach – will continue to build.

There were certainly positives to take from an offensive sense, while Luke Ayling (£4.5m) finally delivered on that untapped underlying attacking potential with a thunderbolt of a goal.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire (C), Shaw, Fred, McTominay (Matic 68), James (Sancho 76), Fernandes, Pogba (Martial 74), Greenwood.

Leeds United XI: Meslier, Ayling, Koch, Cooper (C), Bamford (Roberts 76), Raphina, Dallas, Rodrigo (Firpo 45), Struijk, Harrison (Helder Costa 69), Klich.

NORWICH CITY 0-3 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Diogo Jota (£7.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)
  • Assists: Salah x2
  • Bonus: Salah x3, Firmino x2, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) x1

Order was restored upon the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) to the Liverpool defence for the first time since October, with the Reds shutting out Norwich at Carrow Road.

It wasn’t a completely watertight display, with the high backline caught out on a couple of occasions, Teemu Pukki (£6.0m) spurning a big chance and Alisson (£6.0m) performing heroics in a late penalty box scramble, but the sense of calm that van Dijk brings was something that the Brazilian goalkeeper alluded to in his post-match interview:

“It is really good to have Virgil and Joel in front of me. They give a lot of sense of safety. … [My save] was needed to keep a clean sheet. I don’t think the save affects the result but it feels good.” – Alisson on Virgil van Dijk

While van Dijk’s return will surely boost Liverpool’s clean sheet count, it could also help with the assist tallies of dead-ball specialists Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and – when fit – Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

Liverpool have had more attempts from set plays (nine) than any other side in Gameweek 1 so far, with Jurgen Klopp highlighting the Dutchman’s influence in both penalty areas:

“It was really good to see him again being back on the pitch, especially on defensive set-pieces, he looked really, really good. Offensive set-pieces with the two monsters, Joel and Virgil, we were really good. We scored from a second ball, I think Mo’s goal was a brilliant routine, really – getting a second ball in that area and finishing off. So, yes, it’s nice to have him back.” – Jurgen Klopp on Virgil van Dijk

Bargain FPL defender Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) deputised for Robertson and looked a threat in an attacking sense, matching Diogo Jota‘s (£7.0m) shot and penalty box touch counts and also inheriting corners on the left-hand side.

Above: Liverpool players sorted by penalty box touches in Gameweek 1

“Very good, very good. I would say for at least 80 minutes very good, played good, was involved in all the offensive stuff, defended well. Then obviously someone pulled the plug a little bit! That’s normal after that long period, so it was a really good debut. From the start in an away game, he played a really good game.” – Jurgen Klopp on Kostas Tsimikas

A sharp-looking Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) banked three attacking returns in a now trademark opening-day points bonanza, lashing home Liverpool’s third after earlier setting up Jota (unwittingly) and Roberto Firmino (£9.0m).

Firmino’s goalscoring presence is an unnerving one for Jota owners and the week-to-week uncertainty might be too much for some to bear, although the Portuguese midfielder at least looks to have a strong chance of starting in Gameweek 4.

There were positives to take for Norwich, especially in an attacking sense, but their disrupted pre-season and flagging fitness levels will be of keen interest to owners of Manchester City assets ahead of Gameweek 2.

“When I think about our starting XI today, we were still missing some key players. We had to throw some key players into the cold water because we needed them. When I think about Grant  Hanley, for example, he had to play this game without one single second of pre-season.

“Teemu Pukki missed many training days with us throughout pre-season, Milot Rashica missed two out of the last three weeks due to Covid-19.

“It was tricky, for that I have to say many compliments for the performance. As long as the energy was there, we were competitive.” – Daniel Farke

Norwich City XI: Krul; Giannoulis, Gibson, Hanley, Aarons; Gilmour, Lees-Melou; Rashica (Sargent 77), Rupp, Cantwell (Dowell 86); Pukki (Idah 77).

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Tsimikas, Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Keita (Elliott 83), Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Fabinho 60); Mane, Jota (Firmino 60), Salah.

Buendia without a single chance created and 1 shot outside the box is a tad worrying

He just joined the team, he was the talisman at Norwich, similar like Grealish was at Aston Villa. Have no doubt he will be a great FPL asset with his great record, just needs a little more time to adapt.

Yeap I agree. I think he'll definitely come good, the question is how long will he take to gel into this Villa team that is trying gel themselves on a whole? Idk if I want to keep while waiitng

Hard to know, one of the trickiest part is to know when to sell. You don't want deadwood in your team but at the same time you're afraid he'll haul when you sell. Like Werner for me last year. However, Buendia is proven in the PL and I believe he'll come good the next game.

I do worry with him that he’s more of a “assist the assister” type. Feeding balls through to full backs and wingers to cross etc. But as has been said above its early days. Hold for now.

This another worry, but he has proven in past seasons in PL and Championship that he can rack the numbers up himself

I'd say 1 goal and 7 assists in around 2400 minutes for an absolutely shite side is pretty decent! ahaha

Of course I will watch the game tomorrow first but started thinking about doing Barnes to one of the cheaper Spurs mids - maybe Lucas, as a punt for the upcoming weeks - thoughts?

I’m not saying it is urgent, just trying to find some nice differential for the coming weeks. Next three fixtures are potentially in favour of Spurs and Barnes wasn’t actually that good anyway.

Mbeumo had the strongest presence GW1 so far, and Traore + Sarr were impressive as well. Still Benrahma and Townsend to go today. Hard to justify the +0.5 to +1.0 extra for a Spurs mid IMO.

Mbeumo would be a classic knee jerk move, not for me. Sarr if any but he won’t be facing so poor side of the pitch every game.

Have Lucas in my draft team; for this reason. Good fixtures, playing on the wing.

In my normal FPL team I’ve gone with Torres. Started with him, which is risky, but could be a huge differential if he gets points today and bags a starting position in the team for Norwich

I kind of regret going mostly template this year - hear me out. I did not fully go for the template, but my first 11 probably has 8 of the 11 players that most seemed to be on which I think is standard enough. Basically my deviation from it is no Tsimikas or Tony and the 4th midfielder spot like most is a throw up. Mine is ESR, I know a lot went for a West Ham player in that spot, one of the 7.5m players or a city player.

Thing is I am only really excited to see those 3 key differences score points this weekend so far from an FPL perspective! So today for example I will be hoping Wilson returns as I got him in over Tony, hence my cheap ESR. Other two strikers like most are Ings and Antonio. Last season I went Kane and Son with no Salah. First GW hurt, the next one was a great swing.

I know it really starts now as decisions will start to differentiate us all, but just a musing on the disadvantage of playing the template (or v.near to it).

I avoided Bruno and am not far behind with Mahrez, Gundo and Antonio to go. Salah (c), Greenwood, Jota, Ings all contributing.

More than one way to skin a cat my friend! 2017/2018 winner I think it was avoided Liverpool all season and won the entire thing!

Tricky one this. The template is the template for a reason - they’re decent picks. I do think it’s best to get off to a steady start and then differentiate through the season. Going kind of gung-ho early on can really put you on the back foot.

    3. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

There are around 500 players available for FPL selection, out of whom most people will only consider 30 - 50 at a time, and usually the same 30-50. That is the template

For instance, you chose ESR and not Bellerin (Arsenal), Canos or Westwood 🙂

Ownership will swing wildly between template picks. Some will join in over time. Some will drop out altogether. I wouldn't worry much about differentials this early. There is no data yet, so you're making decisions based on what most other serious players will see anyway, from a pool of assets most other players are considering. Don't let it influence your mood this much yet. Just avoid obvious risks, I think

The virus + basically no bench is just asking for trouble imo. First team should be good to go for next game week

Don't waste FTs on that if your first team is fine. Sort the bench next week if there are no issues.

Not a waste if someone from my first team gets covid next week for example. Feels quite risky to go into gw2 with just Brownhill on my bench

        1. Karhumies
          • 13 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

Save FT for injury to a high budget player. Taking a hit is -4, having 1 player of the XI not show up at all is -2 or if Brownhill comes off the bench and plays less than 60 mins, -1. You are worried about a very small loss of points, especially since Veltman + Brownhill might both play next GW.

          1. Jullepuu
            • 6 Years
            4 years, 4 months ago

There is no way that I'm taking a hit to get rid of Veltman. If my first team is fine for gw2 then spending the ft on Veltman (if he is confirmed out) is a viable option imo

            1. Karhumies
              • 13 Years
              4 years, 4 months ago

It's usually best to save the first FT and always keep 2x FT available in case you would need a double transfer next GW. Opens up more transfer options without keeping money ITB. When you would get the third FT = one gets burned, that is the time to make a bench transfer IMO.

                • 6 Years

That is true in general but covid is what makes makes me want to keep my bench in good shape at all times

It's still a likely 2-point difference if you move now, but a likely 10-point+ swing if you wait and combine the move with a first-XI asset

                  1. Jullepuu
                    • 6 Years

Yeah or maybe it's a -10 next week if I make the wrong transfers. It's not like getting rid of Veltman will bring more money in to the first team. If covid wasn't a thing I would save the ft for sure.

      You seem set 🙂

Our teams are very similar. DCL to Ings, White to Veltman

I've switched Ayling to first sub too. But after seeing S'oton unable to defend without Vestergaard and Bruno definitely NOT playing deep, my cap has switched to Bruno for now. Salah at Anfield makes this pretty close to a coin toss, so I don't know who my cap will be by the deadline. And then there's Gündo vs depleted Norwich

I'll deal with Veltman in GW3. Could become Duffy or Livra. Just learnt that Duffy had 4 shots

Here’s a free lesson.. don’t chase last weeks points. No way does Bruno score 20+ this season so no point bringing him now for non owners until at least GW14 imo. Stick to the plan, stay in your lane and prosper from the additional funds for a far superior squad.

If I went for Bruno.. I would have White (1), Bruno (20) and Toney (2)..

Instead I have Alonso (15), Ings (7) and Mahrez to come.

But people will just say Bruno essential lol

Someone else can have Bruno, Alonso, Ings and Gündogan

Bruno blocks out fellow premiums. There are many ways to mix Salah + Bruno and have those guys you listed. Heck, it's part of the template

But yeah, stick to your strategy. The season isn't based on GW1

Ignore 'em and make your decisions

Or converse and exchange ideas, and then still make your decisions

It's very unlikely that two people will have the exact same team and captain for 38 GWs anyway. You don't need to convince others to get those points in your team

If validation is what you seek, then forums aren't the right place (on any topic, not just FPL). They'll harm your mood unless you always pretend to agree with the crowd

        3. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

I don't see how those opinions should really matter to someone who owns their own team

The only FPL expert is a time traveller. The rest of us are just pundits

In conversation, some choices are far more logical and less risky. So people would react when they see illogical picks. It's all banter and fun conversation, but everyone is still competing and we're all just exchanging ideas. Nobody is "right" without hindsight

But if a time traveller told us to get those illogical picks, we all would 🙂

How is it this! You can’t fill a team full of premium assests. What happens when Son goes ballistic, or Lukakau, or Kane!? There needs to be a balance an even distribution of funds across the squad. Who says 2 premiums is the best?

Don't chase Bruno gw1 points but don't give up on gw2 to 13 points either!!

Is your point here abuot Bruno or about too many premium picks? I've seen a lot of people talking about whether to go without Bruno but not so many talking about whether to go without Salah. Seems odd. Salah is more expensive and scored less points than Bruno last season. Also Bruno's history before coming to the premier is that he is very prolific for goals and assists.

Premiums and distribution of funds. Imo 1 premium (for example Salah with premanent captaincy) may very well outscore Bruno plus Salah teams. It also may not

This week was fun but it doesn't tell anything about the potential of our teams. Look at me only Mo Bruno TAA and Tsimi have delivered so far and im on 75.
    Be careful guys

It’s all about not falling too far behind in gw1.
      Marathon not a sprint…
I’m on 81 with 2 to go. Normally I’d take that score any day but it’s all relative to other teams

It was more free flowing crosses from both sides, he was involved.

They seemed to take quick, short free kicks and played a free wheeling style.

      Looked good.

Remember, Everton were playing a very poor side and were very average in the 1st half. My concern would be Richa swapping with Grey. This proved to be far more effective and Digne was not required to overlap in the same way. Hopefully our center backs will be replaced soon.

The highlights package on MoTD and Everton were forceful and in flight.

Looked good. Think fans in stadiums really helps with intensity of play.

I got and idea - let's all pick them same teams, play the same way & lick each others balls every game week.

I have nothing against Bruno per se, might even own him at some point but gloating owners on their high horses before game week even finished are tad bit annoying.
Most people without Bruno highly likely owning some assets in City-Spurs game - few goals there and suddenly those who own Bruno but didn't captain are not ahead anymore.
More than one way to skin a cat & branding people stupid because they build their early season teams without Uniteds man is just poor sport.

if they keep lobbing crosses into the box then DCL must be a better pick than he was ,also sarr could be a talisman pick and chalobah at 5.0m coins ,if only there wasnt tommy tombola ,theres 3 boys who never featured in 8 weeks of tinkering ,same every year....

It might be wise to slow down a little on DCL. Everton played a God awful side yesterday. Richa was good but I am expecting burnout some time soon.

Good point. I can feel my knee twitching to swap Ings to Rich/DCL at some point. Might depend on how solid Newcastle look today. Probably need to wait until after next weekend.
