MANCHESTER UNITED 5-1 LEEDS UNITED

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) x3, Mason Greenwood (£7.5m), Fred (£5.0m)| Luke Ayling (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Paul Pogba (£7.5m) x4, Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) | Stuart Dallas (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Fernandes x3, Pogba x2, Greenwood x1

No penalties? No problem.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.5m) recorded his biggest ever Fantasy Premier League haul with a 20-point return against Leeds on Saturday, hitting a hat-trick in a 5-1 demolition of Marcelo Bielsa’s troops.

That his goals all came from open play was even more encouraging; there was no reliance on spot-kicks here, with the Portugal international thrice breaking beyond the last man to score. Given the mild pre-season concern about the much-touted move to a 4-3-3 and a possible deeper role, his frequent runs behind the Leeds backline were encouraging.

While Fernandes won’t encounter many more opponents as obliging as Robin Koch (£4.5m), the German centre-half who was covering for the not fully match-fit Kalvin Phillips in front of the back four, the next three fixtures are almost as good as it gets:

Excluding relegated clubs, Newcastle and Southampton had the two worst Premier League defences for goals conceded in 2021, heading into Gameweek 1.

Wolves, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase and keen to show more attacking ambition under their new head coach.

With Fernandes and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) both already owned by more than 50% of FPL managers, Paul Pogba (£7.5m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) threw their hat into the ring for more Fantasy investment.

Pogba hit a remarkable four assists from five key passes, while Greenwood, again playing centrally for United, restored the hosts’ advantage with a breakaway goal and could have had an assist to his name, had Pogba not spurned the big chance he created.

“The way he burst away for that second goal. That’s a man compared to a boy that was in the first team two years ago. I’m delighted with what he has done in pre-season to get his fitness up.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Mason Greenwood

The pair are £7.5m for a reason.

In the inconsistent Pogba’s case, experience has taught us that he could just as easily turn in a rotten performance in Gameweek 2 – or be shunted back to a deeper role.

With Greenwood, it’s the return to match fitness of Edinson Cavani (£8.5m), whenever that might be, and the similar wealth of competition if he’s moved back to right-wing duties. Cavani and Anthony Martial‘s (£8.0m) lack of match-sharpness, Marcus Rashford‘s (£9.5m) injury and Jadon Sancho‘s (£9.5m) likely ousting of another player, Daniel James (£6.0m), at least ensures that the short-term prospects remain positive.

“Today was just about ‘go out there and enjoy yourself’ because he had 45 minutes against Everton, which wasn’t his best. We gave him the freedom of roaming wherever you want to go and get on the ball. I can’t remember the last time that happened [getting four assists in a single game] but Paul’s got that quality and, when you’ve got runners willing to make runs and create space for others, it opens up.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Paul Pogba

Pogba, it must be said, ended 2020/21 in fine form, so Saturday’s display hasn’t entirely come out of the blue. After an excellent performance against AC Milan on the left flank in March, the France international went on to bank four FPL assists from Gameweek 30 onwards, mostly being used in the same role.

Above: Paul Pogba’s rate of chances created from Gameweeks 1-29 (left) and Gameweek 30 onwards (right).

Shaw might have ended up with a one-pointer but there was enough from an attacking sense (a shot that went narrowly wide and two chances created) to encourage owners, while the capture of Raphael Varane will surely help stiffen up a backline that conceded to every team ranked fifth or below in 2020/21.

As for Leeds, they (perhaps naively) attempted to give as good as they got at Old Trafford and came unstuck again. But easier tests await from Gameweek 5 and the likes of Phillips and Junior Firpo (£5.0m) are still to come into the starting XI following disrupted pre-seasons, while general fitness levels – such a key part of Bielsa’s approach – will continue to build.

There were certainly positives to take from an offensive sense, while Luke Ayling (£4.5m) finally delivered on that untapped underlying attacking potential with a thunderbolt of a goal.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire (C), Shaw, Fred, McTominay (Matic 68), James (Sancho 76), Fernandes, Pogba (Martial 74), Greenwood.

Leeds United XI: Meslier, Ayling, Koch, Cooper (C), Bamford (Roberts 76), Raphina, Dallas, Rodrigo (Firpo 45), Struijk, Harrison (Helder Costa 69), Klich.

NORWICH CITY 0-3 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Diogo Jota (£7.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)
  • Assists: Salah x2
  • Bonus: Salah x3, Firmino x2, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) x1

Order was restored upon the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) to the Liverpool defence for the first time since October, with the Reds shutting out Norwich at Carrow Road.

It wasn’t a completely watertight display, with the high backline caught out on a couple of occasions, Teemu Pukki (£6.0m) spurning a big chance and Alisson (£6.0m) performing heroics in a late penalty box scramble, but the sense of calm that van Dijk brings was something that the Brazilian goalkeeper alluded to in his post-match interview:

“It is really good to have Virgil and Joel in front of me. They give a lot of sense of safety. … [My save] was needed to keep a clean sheet. I don’t think the save affects the result but it feels good.” – Alisson on Virgil van Dijk

While van Dijk’s return will surely boost Liverpool’s clean sheet count, it could also help with the assist tallies of dead-ball specialists Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and – when fit – Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

Liverpool have had more attempts from set plays (nine) than any other side in Gameweek 1 so far, with Jurgen Klopp highlighting the Dutchman’s influence in both penalty areas:

“It was really good to see him again being back on the pitch, especially on defensive set-pieces, he looked really, really good. Offensive set-pieces with the two monsters, Joel and Virgil, we were really good. We scored from a second ball, I think Mo’s goal was a brilliant routine, really – getting a second ball in that area and finishing off. So, yes, it’s nice to have him back.” – Jurgen Klopp on Virgil van Dijk

Bargain FPL defender Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m) deputised for Robertson and looked a threat in an attacking sense, matching Diogo Jota‘s (£7.0m) shot and penalty box touch counts and also inheriting corners on the left-hand side.

Above: Liverpool players sorted by penalty box touches in Gameweek 1

“Very good, very good. I would say for at least 80 minutes very good, played good, was involved in all the offensive stuff, defended well. Then obviously someone pulled the plug a little bit! That’s normal after that long period, so it was a really good debut. From the start in an away game, he played a really good game.” – Jurgen Klopp on Kostas Tsimikas

A sharp-looking Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) banked three attacking returns in a now trademark opening-day points bonanza, lashing home Liverpool’s third after earlier setting up Jota (unwittingly) and Roberto Firmino (£9.0m).

Firmino’s goalscoring presence is an unnerving one for Jota owners and the week-to-week uncertainty might be too much for some to bear, although the Portuguese midfielder at least looks to have a strong chance of starting in Gameweek 4.

There were positives to take for Norwich, especially in an attacking sense, but their disrupted pre-season and flagging fitness levels will be of keen interest to owners of Manchester City assets ahead of Gameweek 2.

“When I think about our starting XI today, we were still missing some key players. We had to throw some key players into the cold water because we needed them. When I think about Grant  Hanley, for example, he had to play this game without one single second of pre-season.

“Teemu Pukki missed many training days with us throughout pre-season, Milot Rashica missed two out of the last three weeks due to Covid-19.

“It was tricky, for that I have to say many compliments for the performance. As long as the energy was there, we were competitive.” – Daniel Farke

Norwich City XI: Krul; Giannoulis, Gibson, Hanley, Aarons; Gilmour, Lees-Melou; Rashica (Sargent 77), Rupp, Cantwell (Dowell 86); Pukki (Idah 77).

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Tsimikas, Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Keita (Elliott 83), Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Fabinho 60); Mane, Jota (Firmino 60), Salah.

      Willock hasn't even played,
Raphinha was also playing United and had chances.

      I'll let you decide.

Too Knee-Jerk epecially when they have a home game next and the Leeds fans have waited forever to attend and see a PL game featuring their beloved team. The Power of the crowd is gonna be immense at Elland Road so Raph and other leeds assets could have a really good game imo.
Willock should be given at least 2 gws to assess whether it is willock from the end of season run or he still needs to build up a bit of steam before he gets going again for Newcastle, but defo someone to keep a watch on especially at that price point

Why did you pick Raphina if you were going to sell after one game?

He obviously had less chance of returning immediately than some other alternatives given his tougher fixtures. So the point of him as a pick from the start is that you accept that but want him as a set and forget for the long run.

So, I made one big gamble with my team, and it backfired hard. Went for Mané instead of Salah, and lost 28pts (including C pts). Should I already admit my mistake and cut my losses and do Mané > Salah for free?

Have 4m itb, my plan was to get Lukaku in for either Ings or Antonio. But I can push that transfer 1 week. But then I can only afford Ings > Lukaku since I use .5m on Salah.

    Sanchez
    TAA l Shaw l Tsimikas
    Bruno l Mané l Benrahma l Gray
    Ings l Antonio l Toney

What's with the overwhelming need to bring Lukaku in? He's traditionally a flat-track bully in FPL and he has an awful run of fixtures ahead.

Because I personally belive he is a world class striker, in a team that will produce so many chances, that he will score around 25 goals this season

I believe that too. I don't get why you think he's going to score enough of those goals in the games against Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs and City to justify his price over that period though. There are plenty of players who scored 25 goals or so a season who you nonetheless don't need to bring in just in time for a bad run of games.

TBF though, flat track bully when he was playing for pooer sides. Chelsea have better creativity, if you give him chances, he'll score.

I am in the same boat as you but I am definitely sticking with Mane. This is like chasing last weeks points. You know there isn't a player that delivers every week? You will just miss the Mane haul.

I know what you mean, but I will not chace pts, I will cut my losses. Another week with Salah haul with so many captaining him will kill my season. Losing out on Mané pts will not hurt me.

Go for it if you feel like. I remember from previous seasons when fortunes turned the next week. I will be patient. If Mane gets 14 points and Salah 1 point, are you switching again for Wk3?

No I will not switch back GW3, because Mané pts will not hurt me, Salah pts will hurt me bad. But I need to think about it. Watching the match did not help my confidence on Mané. Salah is just playing for the goals, even his first assist was not a pass, he just couldn't controll the ball. Mané to wide and rarely in position to score, also more often than not looking for the pass.

why sell Ings? When he was at S'ton JWP was on open duties. AEG wont start for Villa so Ings will now be on pens too. Given he scored so many goals and none of them were pens his ceiling is even more higher now.

Over the longer term it is possible that Duffy, Hoever, Omobamidele and Livramento could be £4.0m starting defenders.

Tsimikas will get kicked out for Robertson and Amartey out for Vestergaard.

Mwepu in a different role, Duffy in a back 3 and Veltman back at RWB?

I really don't see Velt getting benched regularly, but anything is possible with Potter

Also, Potter's postmatch comments sounded similar to what coaches typically say about squad players. Gonna monitor that because I do own Veltman. My first Covid casualty in GW1 already

By this argument Amartey should also keep his spot - he was great against Man City, average yesterday but they kept 2 cs.

Yes, but Brighton didn't go out and buy a replacement for Duffy. Rodgers clearly doesn't trust Amartey as he signed Vestergaard. Duffy was MOTM for Brighton yesterday. I am not saying he is a guaranteed 4.0 starter. But he could play his way in with good performances.

        Yup

The only 4.0 asset who started simply because he was preferred was Livra

And Livra's fixtures and team make him a certain avoid until GW9

Some might, some could end up lovely 3.8m enablers. Duffy needs to shape up big time to become a regular starter. I hope he does so Stephen Kenny has another centre back option but also for his experience.

With Firmino back in the mix, Jota to Pogback for GW2, or kneejerk? 1st bandwagon of the season also.

    Sanchez
    TAA l Coufal l Ayling
    Bruno l Salah l Raphinha l Barnes l Jota
    Ings l Antonio
    Steele, Coady, White, Obafemi

Pogba had a good game but to put things in context look at his stats last season. Nothing much has changed. Plus he'll play even deeper when everyone is fit.
Although I admit Jota minutes are threatened. But Don't pick Pogba.

I'm more concerned about your 3rd defender

      Ayling/Coady/White doesn't boost GW2 confidence

Firmino was already back in the mix before the season started. Started and scored twice in their last preseason friendly

I find it genuinely funny that there are a lot of people who spent the entire pre-season on a fantasy football forum and ended up without the best player in the game. Nice to see BruNO folk rightly punished from GW1.

The argument that the money spread out could go a long way, for this week at least not many have been able to match that score across 3 players

I am not saying for a second Bruno is not a good pick, but he scored a goal that Ayling failed to be on the line rather than behind it. His form over the last 6 months and his captaincy chances add to this. I fully understand both the Bruno picks and non picks.

    5. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

It was such a bizarre line of thought

“He was really poor at the end of the season” (he got 2 goals in his last 3 starts)

“He was really bad in the euros” (he’s always been shite for Portugal)

“He’s going to get less penalties” (he has always done an awful lot more than penalties)

Someone was even avoiding him because he got it into his head that Ole would play him as a DM 😆 (Camzy I think?)

When you think Utd generated 137 goal involvements last season from their 73 goals scored, and have kept Cavani, matured Greenwood by a year, and added Sancho… and this man is going to be an ever present all season just sitting there hoovering up returns…It’s just bonkers

Pro pundits have an awful lot to answer for here too though imo

A lot of them were negative on Bruno then magically came to their senses when it came to deadline

Mark’s recent video ramblings about not picking him for GW1 because you then wouldn’t want to sell him will have ruined many people’s seasons already

      1. Eze Really?

Ye the pro pundits can be a bit ‘naughty’ they make arguments for no Bruno just for clicks/likes as it’s more interesting/ edgy than saying go template…. And yet template they go

He was class yesterday but I've seen 10 year old with more intent in the tackle than most Leeds defenders. If you sit off him he'll destroy you, I don't expect most teams to be so charitable.

Mate, he just notched his 49th, 50th & 51st returns yesterday

He has only started 50 games 😆

It’s one of these situations where Bruno could be on 150 returns from his first 100 games & people will still find nits to pick

There’ll always be a way to denigrate him - “he doesn’t score from play against the top 6” was the drum Tinkermania used to beat

“He’s not worth 10m when he starts with Pogba” was nightcrawler’s input

The “penalty merchant” schtick has been done to death

And mark my words “Bruno doesn’t score enough when Cavani starts” will be the next fallacy - until he double & treble returns with Cavani

“Leeds were poor” holds zero water with me like the others above

          1. Tinkermania
            • 6 Years

To be fair to Tinkermania, he was right that season. It was top 10 actually, not top 6. He didn't score a single open play goal. He got me a juice 20 points yesterday. I looked at Leeds in pre-season and I knew they were going to be hammered. He now has score against top 10 in open play.

An argument I’ve heard a few times is...

            “I’m never touching that rat”

Some people really, really hate him. Which I find bizarre as he’s a wonderful footballer who plays the game beautifully.

Try replying to my post there without meandering into penalties talk that I didn't mention. They only add to his FPL appeal. Anyone saying he's only getting good points because he's on pens knows fk all about football. He was good against a poor defence yesterday. But better defences will blunt his attacking prowess and when United have their best attack playing regularly he will be sharing points more than dominating the points.

Pogba will be a good pick if he's consistently good. He should take his lead from Bruno in that regard. For now he remains a fairweather footballer for me. Prefers kissing the badge to shedding blood sweat and tears for it. Luckily Solksjaer knows he can rely on Bruno to get them scrappy wins and hope Pogba improves in that regard.

Regarding the pro-pundits thing, good. People should be making up their own mind anyway and not doing things just because content creators think it's a good idea.

That said, it's a difficult position for content creators because they have to generate content every few days. If you stopped me every three days in the pre-season and asked me to give opinions I'm sure I would have advocated some outlandish things too. It's only approaching the deadline that real clarity descends. They're allowed to change their minds.

Mark's "it would be too hard to sell Bruno" notion didn't make too much sense but tbf it was clear that he had changed his mind on Bruno more recently so even if people were just slavishly following him they had fair warning.

Happens every year. Last year it was no Salah and they (including me) also got burned with a hat-trick.

People try to build a team that will get more points than that template premium team because they know such a team will exist in hindsight. The problem is they're trying to find that alternative unicorn team in GW1 when we have the least amount of info we'll have all season. Meanwhile the majority are making the game easy for themselves by backing the obvious premium picks for the obvious reasons and banking those reliable points.

The template was good. I estimated the template based on most selected players that fits within budget at deadline was:

        Martinez - (Foster)
        TAA - Shaw - Digne - Tsimikas - (White)
        Salah(c) - Fernandes - Grealish - (Bissouma) - (Gilmour)
        Ings - Antonio - Toney

Done pretty well so far with Grealish and Antonio still to go.

      It might.

The thing is though there are now two players (Salah and Bruno) who will be overwhelmingly captained and there's the potential for goals for any of several City options you might choose from. So the damage any one of them can do to you is minimal.

I'd say Greenwood is a bit underrated as he had a flat season last time out, struggling with injury.

A fit Greenwood would have been an explosive asset for England on 70th minutes or for extra time.

This from https://www.football365.com/news/pogba-raises-man-utd-ceiling-bruno-raises-floor-mailbox on Pogba's likelihood of keeping his position is interesting:

"United still have a conundrum over Pogba’s best position, Pogba’s best work in this match was from the middle of the park. He is not going to be making overlapping runs down the left or pinging crosses in from the byline but by moving in he leaves Shaw too much to do on the left. Leeds United punished them once on that flank but against better opposition this will be a problem"

Pogba is clearly an issue for Man Utd. He cost more than Fernandes, but isn't anywhere near as good or consistent as Fernandes.

Pogba's best position is on the left of a midfield three with two more defensive midfielders next to him, but that would mean dropping Fernandes and that is not happening.

You can get away with playing Pogba and Fernandes at home vs bottom half teams, but it won't work over the long term against the big teams.

I still believe that Man Utd are better off selling Pogba and using the money to buy a mobile defensive midfielder (e.g., Ndidi, Rice, Phillips) who can replace Fred in the first team.

Think Shaw is a bit overrated tbh. Nice stats from last season but not for me

Yes but I think I can get better value elsewhere & use the cash effectively too.

Very unnecessary yellow card yesterday. Got me really angry because I picked Alonso but fell into the Shaw trap for EO sake

I'm not a fan either. His positional awareness seems to be lacking whenever I watch him. He's in my team though.

Interested to see ferran torres today....

Times says kane to spurs unlikely so torres may get a run of games up front

Looking to save ft, but may be tempted by Barnes to torres if he does well.....

I started with him for this reason. Thought that with Salah, Bruno, TAA etc, had one spot for a risky player.

Best case scenario - has a top game today, some goal involvements and books a spot in the starting line up against Norwich. Then, he goes mad, scores loads of FPL points, and then we begin a season of Torres up front for city!

A forum is what it says I suppose; something that can be chatted about freely. I am not a person who enjoys the "I told you so" approach. I much prefer a view on this site that uses history and logic to help predict outcomes that may give you an edge in the future. Let us be a little bit more encouraging and pragmatic.

There are some bellends on here like that, endlessly lecturing other people throughout the summer how to play, but I've noticed many of them disappear soon into the season when their ranks don't tally with their gob.

Haha this site improves my rank by about 1m each year.. people come here asking questions and some blame the answers they get as opposed to themselves when they backfire.. I love seeing it to be honest makes me happy knowing those small few are furious but won’t accept accountability..

Goals scored at home this week - 18
Goals scored away this week - 9

Compare and contrast week 1 last season (one fixture fewer ofc)

    Home - 6
    Away - 17

Food for thought if you want to think about it 🙂

Contemplating losing your captain this week here. Don't expect him to repeat that in a hurry - reminiscent of the week 1 hattie that happened week 1 last season.

Southampton is an awkward fixture not to have him for mind.
