Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 2?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are faced with a tough captaincy decision for Gameweek 2.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) go head-to-head again after huge opening-day hauls, but there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining too, including Sadio Mané (£12.0m), Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m).

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 2 Captain Poll, before then analysing the leading candidates, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Unsurprisingly, Salah has dominated the vote so far.

The Egyptian midfielder, who produced a goal and two assists last time out, has gained 63.4% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Fernandes currently in second place, backed by 19.79%.

Mahrez occupies third place with 2.88% of votes, with the top-five list completed by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Mane, with 2.3% and 1.54% respectively.

Salah last 5 starts against Burnley:

    2017: 1 goal 0 assist
    2019: 0 goal 0 assist
    2019: 0 goal 1 assist
    2020: 0 goal 0 assist
    2121: 0 goal 0 assist

I get you cannot go on previous fixtures but still does leave doubt in your mind. Bruno away record is pretty decent!

Right, I don't understand the argument that you can't, especially when we're talking about a team like Burnley that have had the same manager for 9 years.

If this was city v Burnley then everyone would be loading up because they always hammer them

It's a silly argument. There are no guarantees at all but the fact that Liv and But have pretty much the same teams, approach and managers should give you pause for thought to at least look at what's happened before

One problem with these stats is that Burnley defense used to be good. Every man and his dog had Pope or Heaton and at least one Burnley def. Are they getting older or what's the problem, I don't know. Home advantage is back and first match on Anfield. They are going to do the best they can for 90+ mins. I will C Salah.

I’m sticking with the Salah and Mané combo I hoped would do well across GW1 & 2. Can’t bring myself to transfer Mané out vs BUR (H) to bring Fernandes in. Tripled up on Villa so I’ve got bigger problems to fix with my transfers

    Bench one of

    A) Tsimikas (BUR)

    C) Harrison (EVE)
    D) Sarr (bha)

I'm leaning towards B, usually bench the defender if in doubt, but can't help feeling bad about it because I got him in the hope of a 15 pointer, clean sheet and a goal, and if not now, then when...

Thanks for your answers. I do have Sanchez. Interesting that for one of you that increases the motivation to play Dunk (and bench Sarr) -- high risk, highest potential reward. For one of you though it reduces it - giving lower risk, lower potential reward. I guess it depends on your risk profile. I think both are rational answers. I'm still undecided!! A few more hours to go to get off the fence...

also surprised that there is no punditry about the downsides of a first game player captaincy. on average first games have been lower scoring affairs with few outliers

another con against the salah captain this weekend is his burnley record someone brought up earlier...

i guess the biggest pro is it's Anfield's first home game so it should be rocking and with an early goal Burnley could be under real pressure...

Is this not a form of clustering illusion. Creating links between completely separate events that do not exist.

If you flip a coin 10 times and it lands on tails 10 times is there a higher chance of the next flip being heads? The time of the football match does not change the game. It has all the same variables of any other football match.

Nail not on the head, though. Check out footballers' comments about hating early kick-offs, having to have a big meal at 9am etc when they don't feel like it (I'm thinking of Rooney specifically, I know he's said this).
There's a physical and also a psychological element to that.

Though I'd agree that I don't believe it's an enormous factor, and certainly not an overriding one.

That's a fair point, yeah. Same for everyone (in that game at least - but not compared to other games).
But it's a recognised factor, there's also the circadian rhythms and body clock sort of stuff, for those who care to look into it further.

    Captain question…

So I have the Salah / Bruno / Mahrez combo, which didn’t fully pay off GW1, but of course always had Mahrez for GW2 in my head. I understand EO and all that, and also don’t have Jota or Greenwood to share in the spoils.

I am looking to both get the most points I can AND make ground up on teams without City / Mahrez.

Question - do I captain Mahrez for differential and to hammer home my advantage, or keep pace by captaining Salah or Bruno with non captain Mahrez just bringing in a few points difference?

    Thanks!!

decisions! i'm on mahrez for an early differential myself but might chicken out and go with Mo or Bruno to keep pace..maybe just owning Mahrez if he hails might be differential enough esp if bruno or Mo grab a goal and assist each which is what we all pretty much expect as a bare minimum from their matchups

There is just one game week gone, no need to start chasing points. I have the same 3 players and was set to pick Mahrez as captain this week but going with Bruno instead.

With Pep you just don't know if Mahrez is 100% certain to start, you are certain with the other 2.

Mahrez can haul, but he can also blank. After those performances from Salah and Bruno I wouldn't want to risk it. One or two punts like that and if they fail, you are chasing quite big lead. I like aggressive play, but I want my C to be nailed to start and play 90 mins.

captain choice is a simple one - pick the player in your team that you think will score the most points.... it's only week 2, no need to be different just for the sake of it.

if its a 50-50 call between two players - only then maybe think about whether you want lower risk (pick the higher owned player) or high risk (pick the lower owned player).

for me - its hard to look past salah and bruno, but i can see the logic of Mahrez

      My personal favourite curse is...

"Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar claimed in interviews that the reason why Liverpool hadn't won the league since the 1989-90 season was because a witch-doctor put a curse on the club from ever winning the league in a testimonial match for Grobbelaar in 1992 and that the only way to break the curse was to urinate on the four goalposts at the Anfield stadium. In a December 2019 interview, Grobbelaar revealed to have splashed urine on all four goalposts at Anfield after a charity match in May; he had been caught urinating on the posts at the Kop end in 2014.His confession came as Liverpool won the 2019–20 Premier League with 99 points."

Last time it was early kickoff Liverpool won 7-0 against Palace and Salah came off the bench to get 2 goals and an assist.

Those will shrunken cahoonas will go Bruno or Salah for the armband. I am looking to actually WIN this game and not just settle for that boring top 10k spot that I fielded in the 2018/19 season, so i will go TAA for (c)

There are a load of reasons. KDB not 100% fit, doubt he will play 90 mins, lack of a stricker... If you want a differential captain I'd just captain Mane.

KDB with just 3% ownership at home to the worst team in the league is a gift. Assuming he's fit (which he should be), the upside is insane.

What does odegaard signing mean for smith-rowe? Out of starting squad ? Or dropping to a deeper position? Surely won’t keep the nr 10 spot?

Arsenal forums seemed to think it would be Pepe who would drop out. So presumably he'd be moved out wide.

Also worth noting though that the general consensus was that ESR is better with Odegaard in the team.

Also, why/how would he 'drop deeper'? He's never been a conventional centre-mid, has he? Not as far as I've seen or known.

yea whatever it is, it isn't good so plan to get him out your squad...
simple switch to the other 5.5s (townsend dallas mbueno etc) before price increases/decreases
or change of midfield with downgrade to 4.5 and upgrade elsewhere

Thanks! Makes sense. Will hold for this week as I’m planning to do Mahrez to Son next week which will require 2 transfers. So planning to save my FT this week. Probably he’ll be the one being downgraded to 4,5 to enable the Mahrez > Son transfer

ESR on the left or they rotate. Surprised Odegaard is 5.5 tbh, way too cheap. FPL deliberately giving us enablers for Lukaku, etc.

        • 3 Years

also cause he's at arsenal right and not much expectations there fantasy wise but agreed..between him and esr serious enablers potentially

Oh really? Hadn’t checked his price yet. Yes that is surprising! May actually consider him at some point. On the other hand… it’s still Arsenal… Used to love them as their style of play in the old days reminded me of my own fav club. But now… it’s sad actually…

I would suggest that Arsenal haven't thought about this. He was available so they bought him.. now they need to figure out where to put him, which they won't as he is a square peg in a round hole. What even is their formation, what is their starting 11?

      1. Bennerman
        • 5 Years

You reckon Arsenal haven't thought about it? They just bought him on a whim?
How would that happen, how would that chain of events actually happen, right up to somebody releasing millions of pounds in actual money?

Awkward price to move as I already have Wilson and Antonio.

Only real options without a hit

    A) Dennis (yellow flagged) 5.0

I'd avoid. Mahrez not guaranteed to start and transfers are precious. If it was for a 1 week stand out captain option, I'd feel better about it (but don't think Mahrez falls into that category).

Fwiw I think he starts, just always the uncertainty with Pep. And Son is could easily return points (likely on pens and gtd 90 mins)

Super off topic question so forgive me: for 11 years running (except last year), I’ve traveled to the UK with my friends just to watch some premier league matches. This year, we are scheduled to go for the weekend of Sept. 17. With the rising cases, what is the environment like in the UK at the moment. Is it mostly normal? Are people going to pubs and bars? Trying to decide whether to go or cancel.

Again, sorry to be so off topic, but it’s hard to get actual news sometimes.

Yes you wouldn't even know anything had happened. Not sure what the situation is in regards to tickets for games though. There was talk of needing proof of vaccination, not sure if that has been rolled out.

      1. Bennerman
        • 5 Years

Proof of vaccination etc comes in as of 1 October.

There's nothing as such to stop you coming over or acting 'normally' in UK. Bars are all open, football grounds are full etc.

We've been through a really bad time for a long time, the major upside of which being that we are more 'on the other side' of it than most. And we have very high vaccination rates.

I'd say come over, enjoy, and be safe.

Yeah it’s very much back to normal round London and the pubs there. Some still have table ordering rather than going to the bar to order drinks but yeah capacity limits have been mostly lifted everywhere.
