What can we expect from Romelu Lukaku in FPL – and how will he fit in our teams?

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is now the most-bought Fantasy Premier League forward of Gameweek 2, having outstripped Richarlison (£7.6m) in the ‘transfers in’ column.

The Belgian hasn’t even kicked a ball for Chelsea since his £97.5m move from Inter Milan last Thursday but a further 300,000+ Fantasy managers have wasted no time in snapping him up this week, added to the circa half a million who had him in their squads for his no-show in Gameweek 1.

Unless Harry Kane (£12.4m) or perhaps Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) are in situ as a premium forward placeholder, accommodating Lukaku into our FPL teams will probably require a spot of reconstructive surgery and a reallocation of funds.

How to incorporate the Blues’ new number nine is a question we’ll be pondering in our Scout Report below, which first delves a bit deeper into the transfer and his history.

KEY PLAYER/MANAGER QUOTES

“We were looking for a certain profile and Romelu gives us that. He feels confident to play physical, he feels confident to play with his back towards the goal, but also he is very strong in using his speed and pace. So this will always be a key figure in our game.

“To be strong in ball wins and offensive transition, this is what the league demands and this is what we demand from ourselves, but we don’t want to be only a ball possession team, only a defensive team, a team that only plays long balls.

“We feel that Romelu’s strength is having a variety of strengths. He is strong in the air, he will give us a new power when we cross from the side. I don’t think we need to change our style of play to make him shine. He has charisma, he is a good age now where he is a leader and hopefully he will be one of the leaders in our group.” – Thomas Tuchel

“I’ve been training throughout pre-season and I feel good. It’s been good to join in with the guys and get to work. Now it’s just about getting to know all my teammates better and at the end of the day, I’m ready for Sunday if the manager needs me.” – Romelu Lukaku

“He is a true number nine. Since I worked here, I understand why there are so many physical strikers that are so needed and so successful because the league demands it. He’s a perfect fit for Chelsea and he will take the weight off the shoulders of our younger strikers.

“This is a huge part of the story, that he does not step away and he’s happy to make life easier for players around him. I think players like Christian [Pulisic], Kai [Havertz] and Timo [Werner] will benefit from him.” – Thomas Tuchel

“My role will depend on what the game plan is and what the boss wants me to do. If he wants me to be a focal point or if he wants me to attack the spaces in behind, I can do it. The two years in Italy helped me master all the facets of the game for a striker and now I’m ready.

“I like the system that we play and I’m very flexible. I can play as a two or by myself and I’m used to the system because it’s what we play with the Belgian national team so I don’t need much time to adapt. It’s just knowing the strengths of my teammates in important positions and knowing what we do off the ball, then I can do the rest.” – Romelu Lukaku

THE HISTORY

Source: Wikipedia

Lukaku had spent eight years as a Premier League player before moving to Inter in 2019.

The Belgian had already plundered 33 goals and 13 assists in 73 league appearances for Anderlecht by the time he had reached 19 years of age, departing for Chelsea in August 2011 – almost exactly ten years before he would rejoin the Blues.

Sticky spells under Jose Mourinho bookended the striker’s time in England, with the serial blame-dodger citing youthfulness and ongoing development for his failure to bring the best out of Lukaku in west London and in Manchester.

In between, though, the Belgium international was a force to be reckoned with, never failing to hit double figures for goals in a single campaign from 2012/13 onwards.

A 25-goal season for Everton in 2016/17 and two successful years in Italy highlighted what Lukaku was capable of when managed effectively, as does 64 international goals in 98 caps for his motherland.

PREVIOUSLY IN FPL

Lukaku’s 221-point season in 2016/17 was his zenith in FPL and a particularly memorable one for us Fantasy managers, as the Belgian started out at a bargain £9.0m.

Thanks to some phenomenal work from the ridiculously talented TopMarx, we can break down the above numbers from 2013/14 onwards (records aren’t currently available before then) even further to give a clearer picture of his on-field achievements.

As with most players, there was a bit of a disparity between his historical record against the ‘big six’ and the rest: Lukaku averaged 5.39 points per match against the also-rans and 3.19 in encounters with the elite half-dozen sides from 2013-2019.

The Belgian’s home/away record was less contrasting: he averaged 5.13 points per match on his own turf and 4.29 on the road.

A record of 26 double-digit hauls in 209 appearances was so-so but it should be remembered (especially when looking at the below tables) that four of his seasons involved playing for an Everton side that didn’t finish higher than fifth and that indeed twice ended up in 11th.

Sorry mate, Mahrez on the brain.

Same applies for Manè, but I do fancy him vs Burnley. Liverpool’s goals could easily come from him.

No. I wish. Not for FPL reasons. If he plays well in Veltman's absence he could have a slim chance of keeping the starting CB spot.

Fantasy football already being discussed on TV broadcasts, radio, football podcasts etc. Do you think FPL will reach the point where it’s so popular journalists try to affect a manager’s thinking?

“So Pep. Tell us how good Gundogan was as a false 9 last season.”

Radio 5 live has got to the point where it’s annoying. Since Sky managed to bottle the banter of Neville and Carragher like mates “down the pub”, all the media outlets are trying to do the same.

“Chappers”, “Stat man Dave”, it all leaves a bit of a bad taste.

Anyone else almost certain what they are doing with transfers next week even before a ball is kicked this weekend?

For me I am pretty sure I only use 1 of my 2 free transfers. Probably mahrez to Sarr.

Happy to start tsimi vs Chelsea and get ayling off the bench. If tsimi starts I am happy and if he doesn't no problem. He either starts or stays on the bench. I will probably upgrade him over the international break with my money itb having pocketed points and a price rise out of my 4.0.

Those are my only real concerns in my team right now.

Nope. All depends what happens this weekend.

Yes because I expect mahrez to be rotated and sarr looks special.

I need to generate funds and mahrez is a concern even if he hauls which I hope he does because the punt was worth it. Mahrez only got into my team because of tsimi and it seems right to downgrade to someone like sarr who I think will prove to be a steal at 6.0 over the course of the season.

But can he displace Dimitris Gianoulis?

He came from Greece and had a thirst for Norwich...

Probably not - that line is too far from the chorus where you could try and incorporate his name into the song

Think the new rules on penalties this season affect Bruno's returns for the overall campaign. I know he got a hat trick last week but that was in United's best fixture of the season where Leeds just let him play through. Half of his goals last year in the Prem were from penalties and I just can't see that happening again. He's good for this week against Southampton with their defence but long term he's definitely a sell with other premium options looking more suitable.

It's not like there aren't going to be any penalties.

New rules? Most of United pens last year where pretty stonewall new rules or not

Exactly, think this guy is imagining there will be hardly any pens, which I think will be proved to be no the case.

Also, with the higher threshold for VAR to intervene, ones that are called but might have been overruled last term, might not be this time.

It's the 'umpire's call' aspect (quite rightly imo) being introduced

Still there is a very real possibility of penalties being slashed. We saw like 40% on day one of what we had last year. Bruno and Salah got off to an absolute bang but it's in my mind that we could he having a very different conversation is half a dozen game weeks once the blanks start to appear

That's just one weekend, too early to make a judgement on that.

I do agree there will likely be less, just not sure how significant the difference will be.

And ultimately, to answer the pint of the post, I don't personally believe it will make Bruno 'definitely a sell'

For the record, Bruno has 21 pens out of his 43 United goals overall, so it is a high total.

But someone getting tripped in the box is till someone getting tripped in the box. Nuances on the handball rule will account for a small percentage, I'd estimate.

No - "definitely" mean certain and it's far from certain, it's just your opinion. He was massively prolific before he went to United and has continued to be since he went there. In my opinion he will continue to be this season. Also, he may well get a few less penalties but he will still get a decent number of them across a season

I came into this season with Bruno because obviously I'm worried about what he can do, but I think you're being quite optimistic here. We have a very good idea that there will be considerably less pens this year. Bruno (along with Salah) walk a tightrope where losing maybe 3-4 pens over a season, which can easily equate to the better part of thirty points, makes them questionable where players like Son and perhaps Lukaku will end up being better value or better value and just plain better C choices. I'm not going to mount an impassioned argument against either Bruno or Salah yet, but I think we really need to have an open mind about the possibility that we could get sucked into owning big premiums for much longer than is good for us. Especially given that they both started with exceptional weeks

Open minds is fine, and exactly what I have.

'Definitely a sell' is the opposite of an open mind, hence the post being challenged.

            Agreed.

It's a really really interesting season with a potential chink in the armor of the two best players and the game and two other cheaper premiums offering potential to exploit that

Ok maybe I was a little strong in saying 'definitely a sell'. I just think one of the key aspects of this season is to jump off Bruno at the right time when the majority will hold fire. Leeds and Southampton are perfect fixtures for him with the way they defend and I just don't think he's a 'set and forget' player.

They had 12 the season before VAR was introduced. Its just the way they play. Gives them penalties.

I'm gambling on him. He's much better defensively than Alonso and he will be needed at Anfield next week so needs to start before then.

Have Ayling on bench in case Chilwell does miss out.

Gundo was already dropping in ownership, headed for a price drop, and then Pep said he was fit... went from 101.X drop to 135.

If I had Bruno I'd captain him myself. I think United will win by three minimum. You never know with Burnley, they could dig in for a 0-0 on the hour mark then you're sweating!
