FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Kostas Tsimikas (£4.1m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) produced double-digit Fantasy Premier League (FPL) hauls and Manchester City demolished Norwich City 5-0 on a busy Saturday of Premier League football. Let’s take a peek at the Gameweek 2 round-up!

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of today’s games but in the meantime, our long-dormant Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

Brighton vs Watford Week 2 roundup

KEY FPL TAKEAWAYS

  • Alexander-Arnold made it 7.75 points per match in his last 12 appearances with a double-digit haul against Burnley. Tsimikas followed suit with an 11-point return but the presence of the fit-again Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) on the Liverpool bench does perhaps signal that the budget defender’s run in the side could be coming to an end.
  • Brentford and Liverpool are the only two sides with two Premier League clean sheets to their name so far this season. The Bees and Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw at Selhurst Park on Saturday; the two sides’ defences have allowed a combined 56 shots so far this season but have only conceded one big chance apiece.
  • In the continued absence of Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.1m) claimed responsibility for Everton’s spot-kick in the 2-2 draw with Leeds. A total of 34 shots were shared evenly between the two clubs at Elland Road.
  • It’s two goals from three shots for Danny Ings (£8.0m) this season. He is the only current FPL forward whose conversion rate was in excess of 20% in each of the previous two Premier League campaings. He looks to be second in line for penalties at Aston Villa, however, as Anwar El Ghazi (£6.0m) stepped up to take the Villans’ spot-kick on Saturday.
  • Pep Guardiola made five changes to his Manchester City starting XI, saying ahead of kick-off that he “wants to make everyone involved.” Ferran Torres (£7.0m) was again ‘out of position’ up top as Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m) excelled in a right-wing role while two of the benched players, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), found the net – as did Jack Grealish (£8.0m).
  • Another £4.0m defender, Shane Duffy (£4.0m), rolled back the years with a goal from a Pascal Gross (£6.0m) corner in Brighton’s win over Watford. He has had seven headed efforts from set-play situations this season – three more than any other Premier League player.

INJURY WATCH

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 5

As mentioned above, Robertson returned from a brief spell on the sidelines along with Jordan Henderson (£5.0m) and Thiago Alcantara (£5.5m).

Ashley Westwood (£5.5m) and Matej Vydra (£5.5m) missed out with a toe injury and a knock respectively, with James Milner (£5.0m) also absent because of a knock – all three players’ issues are thought to be minor in nature.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£12.0m) ankle problem kept him out of Manchester City’s win over Norwich, meanwhile.

Robin Koch (£4.5m) sat out Leeds’ draw with Everton because of a pelvic problem, while Rafael Benitez gave an update on Calvert-Lewin’s fitness after full-time:

He’s had a problem with his toe. He has not been doing full training sessions in the last 10 days. He is missing a little bit of the stamina to finish the games in the way he wants to finish them.

Leon Bailey (£6.5m) missed Villa’s win over Newcastle with a hamstring injury, with the Mapgies’ Isaac Hayden (£4.5m) aggravating a knee problem.

Minutes after scoring Brighton’s second goal, Neal Maupay (£6.5m) picked up a shoulder injury that led to his half-time withdrawal.

Graham Potter said of his striker:

Hopefully, it’s just a few days/weeks, that’s what we’re hoping for.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY – TOP 10k

While it’s still early days to be trusting the top 10,000 as a barometer of FPL performance, the figures are often a sight more useful than the overall ownership numbers when it comes to assessing active Fantasy managers.

Tsimikas is owned by more FPL managers than even Alexander-Arnold in the top 10k, with Salah and Fernandes – as is so often the case – the only two players whose ‘effective ownership’ is in excess of 100%.

Fernandes and Salah mopped up a combined 95% of the captaincy in the top 10k.

While the Egyptian blanked, there was joy for many of the armband differentials such as Mahrez, Ings, Alexander-Arnold and Grealish.

    Who to axe?

    A) Tsimi
    B) Mahrez
    C) Buendia

2 FT but I'd prefer to save one if possible. Buendia is the main issue in terms of form but maybe just bedding in still and a nice fixture up next.

Mahrez could do well vs arsenal

Tsimi out seems inevitable but I don't want to just swap to another 4.0m

No idea what to do honestly. Maybe just wait until the next deadline and see where I'm at with price changes

I don't see any rush in taking out Tsimikas. Could play another game or two yet.
I'd prob switch out Mahrez. Buendia has some nice games coming.

Cheers for the comment. Keeping Tsimi leaves my bench very weak though with Omobamidele and Scarlett also in the squad and mahrez the ultimate rotation risk.

Probably mahrez is the one to go like you say but I'm sure he'll punish me having said that I always fall into the trap of buying him and then holding on to him for too long in the hope of a haul

Mahrez played 78 mins GW1, and 15 yesterday. Fair chance he'll get some time vs. Arsenal... I don't know your full team but I'd do Buendia->whoever leaves you enough cash for Mahrez/Tsimi upgrade (Gray?) this week and save one ft.

I'd worry about Europe looming. Greenwood could be rotated - although it might mean saving Cavani for CL and Greenwood for PL - who knows? Hammers don't have the squad depth to manage both competitions well. So there's a risk factor with those buy-ins, in my book.

Team ahead of the all important GW 3.
Plan is to WC within a couple of weeks.
Any thoughts on this? Would like DCL but think I should wait another week.

    Sanchez
    Pereira, TAA, Coufal.
    Salah, Benrahma, Greenwood, Barnes.
    Wilson, Ings, Antonio.
    Bachmann, Shaw, Gundo, Tsimikas.
    0.0m, ITB, 2ft.
    Thinking
    1. Salah + Gundo + Greenwood-> Bruno + Son (c) + Bissouma (0.8m). -4.
    2. Salah-> Son (c) (2.5m ITB). Save the other FT probably.

Don't like Salah out for a hit at all. 2 could work but dropping Salah is always a risk as you know. Although there's not many tougher fixtures than Chelsea. Depends if he's going to miss GW4 or not for me

Is Gilmour still best 4.5 mid longterm?
Or Bissouma. Had Bissouma last year for his consistant 2 points.
Was his assist yesterday likely a one off?
Or is he more involved this year?

He seemed to be on free kicks and was marginally more attacking than last season. But let’s not pretend that we expected anything from Gilmour in the opening two fixtures

True. But not got Gilmour yet. Buendia to 4.5 this week.
Fixtures certainly improve in a couple of weeks.
But hopefully never need him anyway.

It was a good assist - quick thinking and pressure. I wouldn't write it off as a one-off. I'm more than happy that I chose him over Gilmour and Brownhill.

Thanks for input. Brownhill dosnt look certain of playing every week which is why I prefer Bissouma. But was planning Gilmour as likely more involved. Bissouma assist has me doubting.

Brownhill was on several free kicks and corners, if he nails the spot he's a way better pick than cdm bissouma.

His xA per 90 minutes is about 0.03 over the last year so you might get one assist a season at that rate (he had none in 36 appearances last season).

Not much between Gilmour and Bissouma imo both will probably end with a similar amount of assists. Gilmour has dreadful opening fixtures as I am sure you know so unfair comparison atm

Thoughts on Salah to Bruno and roll a FT for the international break? Nothing else pressing

Pep is a little bit more predictable than we give him credit for. Did Grealish play well? Not so sure in Pep's eyes. Mahrez lost out due to his previous performance. If there are 10 choices with 5 places, there will always be uncertainty.

Made a mistake by getting 3 expensive defenders as well as Tsimikas, while the whole point of Tsimikas was to have a starting 4.0 defender and get cheap backups. Missed his haul of course

How do I fix the team with 2FTs?

    Sanchez
    TAA Maguire Cancelo

hindsight is great but definitely should've benched Sarr and played Tsimikas...he should've been considered as a 7.0 def not a 4.0. In saying that I deliberated benching him instead of Benrahma but I kept saying to myself would I bench Robbo at home to Burnley!

I see a lot of people over tinkering because they rolled a transfer and now have 2. I’d caution against sideways moves, make 1FT and roll again so you have 2 after GW3 to react during international break, possible injuries, price rises etc. You rolled for good reason, roll again for an even better reason

I’d rather not waste the transfer on those options since it only delays trying to fund Taa.

We are in a similar boat

May go without TAA though since week 5 is the only standout cleansheet for me

im on 150 points currently with 5 left to player so a very decent position , but a WC (below) is tempting to target fixtures changes and price swings and move on my slight problems (tsim, jota, salah, taylor, bachman, dunk, wilson, barnes etc)

                I have the same thinking

But the Chelsea fixture swing also matches United and liverpool not so great

Lukaku can easily come in from Salah downgrade
                Ditto Shaw to e.g Chilwell

City nice fixtures are a week later so :
Def to Dias and Bruno to e.g KDB are also easy with a -4

Im going off the wildcard for Chelsea fixtures since its an easy move to just downgrade Bruno and Salah instead then since you wont captain them at all

Now there is a good block of fixtures for a number of players, so im considering it

As I’m planning on wildcarding gw4 or gw5, toying with the idea of using my 2 FTs to go:
    - Salah and TAA to Reguilon and Son

Looking at the fixtures, I’m not expecting much from Liverpool against Chelsea or Leeds.

This would leave me with a ridiculous 5m in the bank to get Ings to Lukaku next week.

    Thoughts?

    Sanchez
    TAA Ayling Shaw
    Salah Fernandes Barnes Greenwood
    Antonio Ings Toney

    Steele; Taimikas White Gilmour

Those are some moves. But do you really need to WC in GW4/5?

Think i would just do Salah to Son. Keep TAA.
Chelsea Liverpool could easily be 0-0
Can always do the double transfer next week.

I’ve pondered on Salah to Son but watching the Pool game it seems mad to remove a player who was unlucky not to score and is in good form. Tempted but torn.

Im running a 352 so slightly different but Im doing Salah + stones to Son Reguilon, unless tomorrow throws a curveball. Not sure you need to WC tbh

How to use atleast one ft so it does not get wasted?

    Sanchez, 4.0
    Taa, Shaw, Tsimikas, White, Amartey
    Salah, Bruno, Grealish, Barnes, Raphina
    Ings, Antonio, 4.5

With your 2x4m defs and 4.5 fwd you've cut your options drastically. As it stands, you're going to have to start White away at City next week. You need to lose one of the 4m guys whose days are done. That means downgrading a midfielder, maybe Barnes or Raph to Harrison.

nice team. I think that you need a new 4.0 defender. Despite Tsimi's heroics he'll be replaced and Amartey will make way for Vesty I would imagine. I'm not very keen on White either. The front 7 is lovely

Which is the best 4.0 defender now then to replace Amartey/Tsimi? Duffy looked good but hes not nailed is he?

Would prefer to swap 4.0 defender for new one just not sure Tsimi or Amartey first and to who

Wait to see if tsimikas rises - drop him to another 4.0 and cash in on the .1

Do i get a man city defender for GW3 or is it too risky?

Dias the only one I would consider at the mo.

Maguire vs Wolves, Dias vs Arsenal or Cresswell vs Crystal Place. What do you think?

Tough one. For 1 week only?
Dias normally just clean sheet points.
          Maguire away from home.
So would probably go for Cresswell.

If I were going for a City defender, I would go Dias.

In preseason, he is the only that featured in quite a few drafts of mine. Most nailed imo.

    Sanchez Steer

    TAA, Shaw, White, Veltman, Tsmiaka
    Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Brahma, Brownhi
    Ings, Antonio, Toney.
    2FT & 1m ITB.

    HOW TO FIT SON HERE?

All depends on who you are willing to go without.
Salah Bruno or TAA out creates enough funds, but many will not take the risk.

I want to bring in Son next week, just deciding how - 2FT:

    Pickford (don't ask) Begovic
    White TAA Tsimi Shaw Coufal
Smith Rowe Barnes Salah Mahrez Bruno
    Tony Antonio Obafemi

One absolutely mental idea I had was take a 4PT hit and do:
    TAA Salah Toney
    for
    Son Lukaku Reguilon

      Son/Benrahma (or Sarr) - Mahrez/Barnes
But if you are willing to get rod of TAA as you suggest then could get a 4.5 and upgrade Barnes, or a better defender and upgrade Mahrez. (because of your defence I prefer the 2nd option)

To take out Salah and TAA is really risky. I see what you are trying to do and tbh, we all have your problem for we all will need Son at some point.

Could n't you cheapen Pickford, Mahrez, Barnes?

Gameweek 3 presents a nice WC possibility for those willing to move early

    Meslier (Gunn)
    Reguillon Periera Shaw (Tierney, Duffy)
Raphina Bruno Sancho Son (c) (Biss)
    Antonio Bamford DCL

Nice fixtures coming for leeds, United, Spurs to target and shifting out Liverpool until week 5

Some good shouts but Sancho needs monitoring first. To go completely without LIV is a high risk game.

IF i go this route its a 2 week turnaround

So Salah would be back in week 6 for Son and downgrade Sancho

Gonna Risk it and play Free Hit this week:

    Schmeichel/4.0
    Dias/Pereira/Shaw/4.0/4.0
    Mahrez/Son (C)/Fernandes/Barnes/4.0
    Ings/Antonio/Wilson

Risky with no Liverpool players but still skeptical.
