FPL Gameweek 3 preview: The players and teams with eye-catching stats

Our Big Numbers piece looks at some stand-out player and team statistics ahead of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline for Gameweek 3.

Alongside the usual stats from our Premium Members’ Area, we will also be offering some titbits supplied to us directly by Opta, our match data providers.

2.30 expected goals prevented (xGP) by Alisson Becker (£6.0m) in the last two Gameweeks. This means that the Brazilian has let in 2.30 fewer goals than data collectors Opta anticipate he should have, based on the quality of shots faced. Of the four goalkeepers who kept two clean sheets so far this season, he has ‘prevented’ more goals going in.

10 chances created by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) in the first two Gameweeks is the most that any Premier League player in any position has supplied during this period. Newcastle United’s set-piece-taking defender Matt Ritchie (£5.0m), intriguingly, is second on nine. Alexander-Arnold has also created two big chances, meanwhile, a tally that only Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) can match among FPL defenders.

7 goal attempts by Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy (£4.1m) in his last two matches; Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) has had zero. All of Duffy’s efforts have been headers from inside the opposition area and have come from set plays, so it’s perhaps no surprise that Pascal Gross (£6.0m) can’t be bettered for successful corner-kicks in the division so far.

49 final-third touches registered by Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) against Spurs, a total that no other defender – or indeed midfielder – could top in Gameweek 2.

9 penalty box touches registered by Reece James (£5.6m) in Sunday’s 2-0 derby victory over Arsenal is the most that any FPL defender managed in Gameweek 2. His total of four shots against the Gunners was also unsurpassed among his FPL positional rivals.

28 penalty box touches, ten goal attempts, eight shots in the box and three big chances created recorded by Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) against Norwich and Burnley combined in the opening two Gameweeks, all totals that are unbeaten amongst FPL midfielders.

23 penalty box touches and 10 goal attempts recorded by Adama Traoré (£6.0m) in his last two league matches for Wolves, totals that none of his teammates can better. Traoré has had seven shots in the area in that timeframe, with only Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m) registering more among Fantasy midfielders. Adama tops the expected goal involvement (xGI) table among all midfielders (1.79); he didn’t have a single ‘big chance’ in 2020/21 but has had two already in his new role under Bruno Lage.

Still got a free transfer to use. I feel I’ve missed the boat with Benrahma though it looks like he’s going up again tonight

    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA - Shaw - Duffy - Tsimi - White
    Salah - Fernandes - Grealish - Raphinha - Gilmour
    Antonio - Ings - Toney

Feels like Tsimi to Livramento makes the most sense as Liv’s fixture isn’t great, it frees up a slot and saves me 0.1m?

I considered Tsimikas to Livramento with my second ft but not sure I want to do it for him just to sit on my bench.

I keep saying I’d sooner have 2FT into the international break but it’s frustrating seeing a couple of targets going up in price.

Same issue I have. I feel like I'm missing out of I don't get Livramento. But my starting 11 looks good on paper so I'd rather keep 2 ft for the following week.

I don't think it's too late to bring Benrahma in. There's nothing to say he and West Ham won't keep firing in their easy next two.

      1. HTL
        • 5 Years

Would you ditch Grealish for him though? Haven’t got any other City cover, appreciate he’s not necessarily a natural goal scorer tho

          • 3 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

This is tricky, I don't think I would do that. But I would want to do it!
I'd be more confident of a Benrahma g/a this weekend than a Grealish one. Grealish may not even play where as Benrahma is good as nailed. But of course this games more about looking several games ahead and not just the next one. And could you really make proper use of the extra 1.8m
I see Man City players generally in FPL as Fools Gold, as in "The next game, that will be the big one".

You'll be grateful to have two free transfers during the international break next week. If you did the transfer and they both blank, would you regret it.

      Boo

Is everyone muscling in on Kane now? Some of us have had him for 4/5 days 🙂

On something similar but rate Bamford over DCL

I’ve also popped Grealish into midfield over Greenwood. But kept Bruno over Mo. Looks easier to swap Kane back to mo in 5 or just get mane

Ha ha. Sorry buddy. Still may go Rom but Kane scoring twice tonight with Watford and Palace next could be great.

I’ll have a look into that Salah/Bruno switch.

Might want CR7 in 5 if and that’s a BIG IF he’s debuting against Southampton, easy to go from Kane > CR7 if needed.

Defo think there’s percentage in having money up top right now

Laughably I went Kane on Sunday night at 12.4 so keen I was on those fixtures. Didn’t see much downside if he went to City

Lost my nerve Monday and pulled WC to leave me an out 🙂

You reckon James is a good bet? Defence still bit up in the air for me. Eying Cancelo but not sure I can reach

Slight rotation threat I suppose but those Chelsea full backs look great and at 5.5m I think their under priced with Lukaku in the side.

on WC? I've got the same Kane vs Kaku debate - I know there's a big cloud about him but I can't help but think Kane in front of fans will want to make a point and get everything resolved with a brace.

Most votes wins. Which WC team do you prefer? A looks safe & balanced but B looks aggressive & I like it a lot... I'm also a sucker for 3-5-2. Any tips welcome.

    A). Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw Reguilon (Duffy, Livramento)
    Salah Bruno Benrahma Raphina (Bissouma)
    DCL. Antonio Ings

    B). Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA. Coufal. Dier (Duffy, Livramento)

why would they? I've always wildcarded this early and it always went the right way. I don't need to see more than 2 GWs 'to get into the game'

Question is actually not because of me but because of a mate who only started playing FPL this year.
I had 106 + 85 until now and I'm pretty happy with my squad.

Not too late, wildcard is about shaping your team for the upcoming run of games, rather than making 0.2 profit

thank you, yes I see it that way too, on the other hand a lot of players have already gone up and especially if you have already made losses, you might only be able to afford a few players next week. Fear of being priced out.

Sorry if this has been asked already but with Dier playing full 90mins tonight and Sanchez rested does that effect him playing at the weekend or do you guys think it will be Dier and Romero?

Any particular reason why Jota is predicted to be benched in the team news section?

Firmino started in difficult matches last season.

Just their guess that Firmino is slightly more trusted in tight games. But really I think Jota has started both and scored the first goal in both, its his place to lose no?

Neale disagrees and so do I. I expect Firmino to start.

If we start Jota we'll win.
If we start Bobby we'll draw or maybe lose.
Jota is clinical and that's too important in these games against sides like Chelsea.
No way he will be left out.

Hey Bubz - team news line-ups won't be finalised until I've seen the pressers and done a bit more reading up on local rags/forums but my gut, and only my ample gut, thought Firmino. He started every 'big six' match last season (Jota didn't start *ahead of him* once in the matches he was available for against these teams, although these were admittedly few and far between because of injury). Different circumstances I appreciate this time with Jota coming off the back of two successive goals and Firmino's disrupted pre-season but Klopp seems to love his graft/off-the-ball work in games of this magnitude. But what do I know, really.

    Fabrizio:

"Manchester City are also working on the outgoings to proceed with official bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus. Raheem Sterling could leave Man City if right bid arrives. #MCFC"

So they can afford to bid around £150m for Kane but not £30m for Ronaldo? I get his wages will be enormous in comparison but I don't get why they're acting like they can't afford it.

      Yeah they just pretend.

Like when Guardiola comes out with a straight face and says ‘we can’t afford Sanchez/Maguire etc’.

We all remember what happened when the takeover began.

Yeah that makes sense, but even if Ronaldo's wages are about double what Kane's would have been (probably amounting to something around 400k-500kPW), over 2 years that + £30m will be far less than £150m + Kane's wages for minimum 4-5 years.

You get the feeling City, or maybe Pep, doesn't want Ronaldo. But it'd be such a marquee signing for the club that the board want it done.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

I think that too. I think it makes sense for what he wants. He says he'll likely go in a couple of years so someone like this might make more sense as a high-end but short-term option (same for Messi), but Ronaldo just doesn't fit into that team for me. In the first leg of the CL game against PSG last season I think we saw something that City didn't have really before and that was a team ethic and that completely overcame PSG who were the opposite, getting frustrated the second City turned the game and just resorting to fouling and shrugging shoulders at each other. Ronaldo will be Ronaldo and at times like that he won't be what they need.

Slightly worried of too much Spurs attack but could swap out Kane for Lukaku after this weekend.

    Sanchez

    TAA | Coufal | Dias

    Pogba | Greenwood | (S)on | Benhrama

    Kane | Ings | Antonio

    Subs: Livramento, James, Bissouma

Everyone in my team bar Salah and TAA has good fixtures this week. Caution says burn a simple transfer like Veltman out and 2 FTs over international break.

But I’m so close to Salah out for a week to get (K)ane and then Salah back as part of downgrading a few players to get cheap form options
