FPL

What impact will Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival have in FPL?

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s (£12.5m) move to Manchester United is dominating the discussion among Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers at present.

How to fit the 36-year-old Portugal international into our sides, his impact on existing United assets and how the transfer effects Wildcard plans are been widely debated on site and elsewhere.

There’ll be plenty of coverage on the former Juventus and Real Madrid man on our pages over the September international break, starting with this kneejerk overview of the potential ramifications of his addition to FPL.

MASON GREENWOOD

FPL have price Ronaldo up as a £12.5m forward and central striker is also a position that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Portuguese operating in when he dons a United shirt:

“He’s evolved as a player, he used to play wide right, wide left, up front. He’s more of a centre-forward for me at the moment, definitely.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo will almost certainly get more game-time than the more peripheral Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) has to date, too, with Solksjaer adding of the veteran Portuguese:

“He is not signing to sit on the bench. He is going to make us a better team.”

Barring some bit-part appearances from Anthony Martial (£7.8m) and Cavani, Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) has been the man tasked with leading the line for United this season.

With Ronaldo arriving and Cavani building up match-fitness (not to mention dodging international duty and subsequent quarantine), those regular run-outs up top will likely be coming to an end despite his scoring of three goals in as many matches.

Ronaldo’s deployment up top doesn’t necessarily mean more benchings in itself: Greenwood has spent more of his time at Old Trafford operating on the right flank, and his goals against Southampton and Wolves came while he was stationed in a wider role. So, too, did many of his strikes in his purple patch at the back-end of 2019/20.

Above: Mason Greenwood’s passes received heatmap in 2021/22, from our Premium Members Area

The youngster has a tendency to drift right even when nominally playing as a central striker anyway so starting position is perhaps not as much of a worry – but rotation soon will be.

He may be safe for now, with Jadon Sancho (£9.3m) still looking a bit off the pace, Daniel James (£6.0m) surely now slipping way down the pecking order and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) a little way from a return.

But eventually, the competition for places will heat up, not to mention the frequency of fixtures when the UEFA Champions League starts after the September international break.

UNITED’S OPTIONS IN EACH POSITION

CF: Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, Martial
LW: Rashford, Pogba, Sancho, Martial, James
RW: Greenwood, Sancho, Rashford, James
AM: Fernandes, Lingard

There are parallels to be drawn with Ferran Torres (£7.1m) at Manchester City: both mid-price midfielders have the potential to haul when on the pitch, but sustained game-time may soon be an issue.

    Thoughts on:

Grealish, Bruno, Scarlett > Gilmour, Jota, Ronaldo -4 (assuming Ronnie is 12.5m)?

2 FTs this week looking quite handy.

    I'll roll a few FTs and then come GW7 - Ronaldo + Jota > Lukaku + Havertz/Mount

I have 2 FTs. No saving required! Feel this is a good time to make a move. Although oddly, I feel that Lukaku is actually the best captain this week. Villa without Martinez, Buendia and maybe Mings. He's gonna be a menace.

Oh right I see. I agree on Lukuku I stuck with my preseason plan Vardy as gw1-3 then swap for Lukaku \ big gun. Think Chelsea will do well v that Villa defence. Plus even better Martinez and Buendia out.

I have no problem with it at all tbh. He hasn't looked great since the first week, gets lots of silly bookings and without pens and some direct FKs, his output will not be worth 12m.

I agree that Bruno won't be worth his price tag but if you're only going to captain Ronaldo against Newcastle, a game which Bruno could do well in, I'm not sure it's worth the hit. I don't think you can count on Ronaldo to start every game either.

He'll be a 3 week mini punt before Lukaku comes in GW7. Because I know I'm getting Lukaku no matter what come GW7.

I have the same plan, but I will 0.1m short if Ronny is 12.5, which will cause a rethink, regarding either Jota or Ronny.

I also want to do Benrahma --> Raph for GW5. Feels like that will be the right time to jump off that ship.

I did the same move - the difference is you got DCL @ 8 rather than @8.1.

However, I'm holding Torres @ 7 which may turn out to be more useful. It difficult to say at this stage - he's either the most underpriced player in the game or just a false dawn.

81 goals, 15 assists in 96 games for Juve. Now has a stronger supporting cast around him, Newcastle (H) first up, expect him to start, going to be really difficult not to bring in and captain.

Has anyone else been stitched up by Bruno?

I punted Mane over Bruno in GW1, then transferred Bruno in when his price was about to rise as I wouldn't be able to afford him if he kept that form up.

Bruno's and Mane's GW scores so far

    17 3
    1 8
    2 5

I basically unluckily missed Bruno's haul and then transferred out points. Bloody FPL 😐

Stitched up by Bruno or by points chasing?

        • 12 Years

More money chasing. If he was guaranteed not to rise then I probably would have been much less likely to swap him in.

If he made it to GW2 with another double digit haul and I didn't have the money then I would have been destroyed rank wise.

Lesson here is dont check price rises then. Think points not pounds

            • 12 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

Lesson here is FPL is largely lucky based and not to dwell on small parts of the season as there will be time to claw ranks back.

And also not to diverge too much from the template on the big picks at the start of the season to minimise rank losses. AKA EO does matter at the start.

      2. fusen
        • 12 Years

Also, you say points chasing as if that isn't literally what the start of the season is about. Are people transferring in Benrahma not points chasing? Getting in players who appear to be in form is literally the point of this game.

You have to remember why you picked your own players though. All that planning before the season to sell them after one game for whoever just scored?

            • 12 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

It was a maximum 2-3 week punt.

Flip a coin and Mane gets points in the first week and Bruno doesn't. The problem is being priced out of owning a player who hauls and may have the confidence to haul again the week after, who is owned by basically everyone else.

Getting in Bruno because of a freak haul is points chasing.

I think more over it's about bringing in a player who hasn't hauled, and is due, ahead of one who has hauled, and you hope will continue.
One is points chasing, one is points predicting.
Perfect example of this is ahead of GW3, those who brought in Torres instead of Benrahma.

This. I brought in Wilson who had just blanked and was close to a drop and he scored. Price changes shouldn't influence choices

Haha, I don't agree with your Torres vs Benrahma comparison at all.

That isn't smart playing, that's a gamble. You do a wildcard and pick players who haven't yet hauled but soon will and I'll show you a wildcard that is more than likely to score worse than a wildcard full of players who are in form and just hauled.

Of course to get ahead you need to own a player who scores points who not many others own, but the idea that everyone in the top 10k is being a mystic meg and transferring in players who blanked this week but score big the next just isn't true.

Unfortunately to do well you need to be fairly boring / template. Otherwise being behind by 20 points in GW1 could easily turn into being behind by 40 points in GW2.

Right now he's more or less box to box. Less forward than Gallagher but still involved at the pointy end - hence assist last week.

IB could change things up with Olise due back from injury and Hughes likely to be close to a starter. Mili? Who knows.

Also the first two are Spurs and Liverpool so that may muddy the picture a bit. I wouldn't expect either to dominate possession as Chelsea did but special measures may be in place.
