FPL

What impact will Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival have in FPL?

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s (£12.5m) move to Manchester United is dominating the discussion among Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers at present.

How to fit the 36-year-old Portugal international into our sides, his impact on existing United assets and how the transfer effects Wildcard plans are been widely debated on site and elsewhere.

There’ll be plenty of coverage on the former Juventus and Real Madrid man on our pages over the September international break, starting with this kneejerk overview of the potential ramifications of his addition to FPL.

MASON GREENWOOD

FPL have price Ronaldo up as a £12.5m forward and central striker is also a position that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Portuguese operating in when he dons a United shirt:

“He’s evolved as a player, he used to play wide right, wide left, up front. He’s more of a centre-forward for me at the moment, definitely.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo will almost certainly get more game-time than the more peripheral Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) has to date, too, with Solksjaer adding of the veteran Portuguese:

“He is not signing to sit on the bench. He is going to make us a better team.”

Barring some bit-part appearances from Anthony Martial (£7.8m) and Cavani, Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) has been the man tasked with leading the line for United this season.

With Ronaldo arriving and Cavani building up match-fitness (not to mention dodging international duty and subsequent quarantine), those regular run-outs up top will likely be coming to an end despite his scoring of three goals in as many matches.

Ronaldo’s deployment up top doesn’t necessarily mean more benchings in itself: Greenwood has spent more of his time at Old Trafford operating on the right flank, and his goals against Southampton and Wolves came while he was stationed in a wider role. So, too, did many of his strikes in his purple patch at the back-end of 2019/20.

Above: Mason Greenwood’s passes received heatmap in 2021/22, from our Premium Members Area

The youngster has a tendency to drift right even when nominally playing as a central striker anyway so starting position is perhaps not as much of a worry – but rotation soon will be.

He may be safe for now, with Jadon Sancho (£9.3m) still looking a bit off the pace, Daniel James (£6.0m) surely now slipping way down the pecking order and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) a little way from a return.

But eventually, the competition for places will heat up, not to mention the frequency of fixtures when the UEFA Champions League starts after the September international break.

UNITED’S OPTIONS IN EACH POSITION

CF: Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, Martial
LW: Rashford, Pogba, Sancho, Martial, James
RW: Greenwood, Sancho, Rashford, James
AM: Fernandes, Lingard

There are parallels to be drawn with Ferran Torres (£7.1m) at Manchester City: both mid-price midfielders have the potential to haul when on the pitch, but sustained game-time may soon be an issue.

Kane(c) was a massive disappointment this week. Oh well guess it’ll be an easy switch to CR7.

One thing I haven't really seen mentioned is the fact that Ronaldo will be rested from time to time. At Juve he was rested a few times before CL games. I expect him to start against Newcastle but if he's rested for West Ham or Villa I don't think he's all that appealing.

I don't see it. The group isn't all that straight forward. Villarreal and Atalanta are capable sides but more importantly Ronaldo lives for CL nights and goals. He'll want to play.

Villareal and Atlanta are after the West Ham and Villa matches. Young Boys up first. So he'll probably not play that

Agreed there but reckon he rests against Villa at home which is when you'd want him. After the Villa game their run is Villarreal, Everton, Leicester, Atalanta, Liverpool, Spurs, Atalanta, City. If there's a game for him to rest in it's Villa.

No. Ronaldo will always want to play group stages as he can grab some easy goals and pad his stats.

Yeah with all the attackers United have and him turning 37 soon we’re probably looking at him starting 80% of the PL games. I don’t think he will start against Newcastle. He will probably come on around the 60min mark.

          Not having a go.

Current flavour of WC is to lose Bruno for Luk or Ronaldo.

I'd downgrade Vardy to a Bam, DCL, Jimi. Upgrade Duffy to a 4.5. And then also Allan.

Have you looked at Vardy's fixtures after city though? I think of Vardy as a Ronaldo type of player. Plus leaves money in the bank compared to Ronaldo. Plus Vardy has no international football.

Newcastle (H) putting serious blinkers on... Conceding 4~ xG to Southampton is truly horrific, now put them at a roaring OT with Ronaldo, Bruno, Pogba and co all laying siege... really want CR7 for this one!

Yeah it's juicy isn't it? My reservation is that I need a hit including Bruno out to get him. Bruno could do well and I wouldn't be surprised if Ronaldo is rested against West Ham or Villa when CL starts. He won't play 3 games a week too often imo.

      1. Flair
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, he could be rested but since he's a fitness beast and always wants to play every game not sure Ole has the will to bench him. Not concerned about it, really.

  9. jackruet

I am pretty sure ronaldo will either start from bench or wont start at all depending on situation. Utd doesnt have any emergency situation to start a newly bought player right away. Look at messi at psg

    1. Flair

Messi lacked match fitness due to vacation after Copa America, Lukaku is a better comparison IMO.

Messi doesn't care if he plays or sits out a game or two in the Ligue 1, Ronaldo has a different mindset. Nobody can put Ronaldo on the bench if he wants to play, especially Solskjaer

Also Messi did not have full pre-season training and Ronaldo did

        1. Amartey Partey
          • 4 Years

Based on the way Solskjaer operates and has picked his players in the first three games. Varane had to wait three games until he played. Ronaldo won't have to wait as long, but it's unlikely he will start.

Sancho should start. Solskjaer isn't quick to drop players and he knows he needs game time. Especially at home. Same story with Cavani.

Of course there is a chance that Ronaldo starts. I just think there is more chance he will be on the bench for that first game at Old Trafford. When he comes on in the second half the crowd will go beserk. Ole knows this.

Def: More or less the same - united and liverpool still have good fixtures, whilst the likes of Ayling/White are now coming into theirs. Have an eye on Shaw --> James/Chilwell in the future.

Mids: Salah + Jota/Greenwood + Torres + Raph. Benrahma/ESR/Gray are good options but supoptimal ones imo - you could look at them if you wanted to fund an improved defence/GK.

      Fwds: Ronny/Kaku + 2 of DCL/Bamford/Jimmy/Antonio

At the minute I'm looking at this for the end of the week, but I'm also toying with utilising the WC to bump my team value in line with expected changes so anyone with an asterisk is temporary:

      Sanchez (Steele)
      Semedo Laporte* Alonso* (Livramento Duffy)
      Salah Sarr Gray Cantwell Raphinha
      Lukaku Antonio Ronaldo

Basically, I have Son and to hold but I can't do it if I want Ronaldo alongside Salah and Lukaku if I want a balanced team. I'm holding for now though to hopefully benefit from his next rise. Benrahma I also have and am holding in case he somehow rises twice more before the next deadline but can't keep him either so downgrading to 5.5 or so, with Vlasic likely incoming and European fixtures on the horizon I think it might be time to jump off. Alonso I want to ditch for Chilwell but not sure what's happening with Chilwell so might hold for GW4 and move to James afterwards if he still doesn't show. Laporte was Maguire that I might bring back, would like to go with Stones but maybe Laporte is keeping him out so maybe I'll stick. Raphinha might move to Torres if I think it's viable.

It's definitely not ideal, I'd love to keep TAA and Son but I got Lukaku in with a view to having him in for most of the season even through poorer fixture runs and on another season I'd keep TAA over Salah but he just looks so sharp so far to me as well as having his usual threat in front of goal. I just looked again and if I go for cheaper Wolves and Chelsea defs (assuming Christensen is going to be playing fairly regularly) I could move the other 5.5 to TAA if I went for Gilmour over Cantwell. Plenty of food for thought over the next 12 days anyway that's for sure, especially with inevitable injuries and covid cases.

Just can't see him on the bench, he had preseason, a competitive game and now has international duty. That screams match fit.

There is no reason to not start. He is Ronaldo

Ronaldo will play. You forget that he will have the final say on half the decisions lol. He will tell Ole he's ready to start and Ole can hardly say no.

Well if he gets a yellow card from Ireland game ,then he can't be in a team against Azerbaijan. Or that's how it looks to me at least. Thus no point traveling there then. And of course it's Azerbaijan, which at least on paper might be an easy fixture, so maybe Portugal doesn't need Ronaldo. 🙂

The real answer is no one knows maybe Ole isn’t even sure at this stage.

He will be on the bench. You just have to look at how Ole brings in new signings for your answer. Of course, Ronaldo is a different kettle of fish which is why he will play in the first game, but just not start it.

Too me it does, I don't like spreading the cash. That's why I've had good start too at 11k

The only other player anyone would want in that team is Greenwood which might be achievable depending on TV

I don't disagree, I like it aside from the obvious captaincy headache.

My question was genuine though - what is the definition of a balanced team - 30M in each line plus 10 for 2GK?

    A. Replace Ings (DCL if fit)
    B. Replace Bruno (Son?)
    C. Bruno + Ings to CR7/Lukaku + another mid -4
    D. Save the FT

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Reguilon White(!)
    Salah(c) Bruno Greenwood Benrahma
    Antonio Toney
