FPL

What impact will Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival have in FPL?

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s (£12.5m) move to Manchester United is dominating the discussion among Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers at present.

How to fit the 36-year-old Portugal international into our sides, his impact on existing United assets and how the transfer effects Wildcard plans are been widely debated on site and elsewhere.

There’ll be plenty of coverage on the former Juventus and Real Madrid man on our pages over the September international break, starting with this kneejerk overview of the potential ramifications of his addition to FPL.

MASON GREENWOOD

FPL have price Ronaldo up as a £12.5m forward and central striker is also a position that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Portuguese operating in when he dons a United shirt:

“He’s evolved as a player, he used to play wide right, wide left, up front. He’s more of a centre-forward for me at the moment, definitely.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo will almost certainly get more game-time than the more peripheral Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) has to date, too, with Solksjaer adding of the veteran Portuguese:

“He is not signing to sit on the bench. He is going to make us a better team.”

Barring some bit-part appearances from Anthony Martial (£7.8m) and Cavani, Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) has been the man tasked with leading the line for United this season.

With Ronaldo arriving and Cavani building up match-fitness (not to mention dodging international duty and subsequent quarantine), those regular run-outs up top will likely be coming to an end despite his scoring of three goals in as many matches.

Ronaldo’s deployment up top doesn’t necessarily mean more benchings in itself: Greenwood has spent more of his time at Old Trafford operating on the right flank, and his goals against Southampton and Wolves came while he was stationed in a wider role. So, too, did many of his strikes in his purple patch at the back-end of 2019/20.

Above: Mason Greenwood’s passes received heatmap in 2021/22, from our Premium Members Area

The youngster has a tendency to drift right even when nominally playing as a central striker anyway so starting position is perhaps not as much of a worry – but rotation soon will be.

He may be safe for now, with Jadon Sancho (£9.3m) still looking a bit off the pace, Daniel James (£6.0m) surely now slipping way down the pecking order and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) a little way from a return.

But eventually, the competition for places will heat up, not to mention the frequency of fixtures when the UEFA Champions League starts after the September international break.

UNITED’S OPTIONS IN EACH POSITION

CF: Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, Martial
LW: Rashford, Pogba, Sancho, Martial, James
RW: Greenwood, Sancho, Rashford, James
AM: Fernandes, Lingard

There are parallels to be drawn with Ferran Torres (£7.1m) at Manchester City: both mid-price midfielders have the potential to haul when on the pitch, but sustained game-time may soon be an issue.

      Looks good, my thoughts -
Grealish is not worth it inimo but Torres is definitely worth the risk.

Ronaldo, lukaku and salah would be at least 1.5× as much as trent. Do you think that they will score 1.5× more points than trent. You would IMHO, be relying on double points for captaincy (which as we all know ,is a bit of a lottery, especially with 3 such big hitters).
I feel that Trent is perhaps the best VALUE in fpl and therefore essential.
Not keen on shaw either with the fixture swing soon.
Shaw and Ayling would be the two I would look to find alternatives for.
It is a fairly weak bench in case of covid related issues.
I like most of the team though. Good luck with your choices.

My dilemma - Gray vs Torres vs Benrahma vs Sarr vs Traore:

Gray (5.5) - two really good fixtures during next 3GWs: BUR GW4 and NOR GW6. Everton had xG of over 1.5 last 3GWs. Gray with xG: 0.28 and xA: 0.39 truly overperforming but is a sure starter. Ownership: ~3%.

Torres (7.1) - one really good fixture during next 3GWs: SOU GW5, and Lei game next week, which is a toss a coin imo. City had ridiculous xG of over 4 against Arsenal...and xG of over 2 against Norwich. Torres with xG: 2.09 and xA: 0.02. It should be noticed that he had really poor xG: 0.17 against Norwich. Not really sure about his place within the team with Foden back and when KDB back. Ownership: ~5%.

Benrahma (6.4) - one really good fixture during next 3GWs: Sou next week, also could see goals agains MUN and Lee. WH with nice xG of over 1.4 last 3GWs. Benrahma with xG: 1.09 and xA: 0.65. Nonexistent xG/xA vs Crystal Palace. The issue is his potential position with the new signing and WH in Europa League. Ownership: ~28%.

Sarr (6.0) - overall good fixtures next 3GWs: WOL, Nor, NEW - WOL ofc the toughest one, however, can see a nice potential for counterattacks. The only noticeable of WAT was during the first GW - over 1.3. Sarr with overall xG: 0.43 and xA: 0.62. The numbers should be better with the incoming fixtures. Definitely Sarr is their main man, just ofc we can't be sure that WAT will be performing better. Ownership: ~5%.

Traore (6.0). - imo the best fixtures next 3GWs: Wat, BRE, Sou. Wolves with good xG of over 1.3 each of their games so far - how it ended is another story. Traore with xG:1.5 and xA: 0.61. He passed the eyet-test. Said that, we can't be sure that they will start scoring, however, they look really good as a team! Ownership: ~1.5%

Still don't know who is the best pick! Traore is defo tempting as hell!

Stats taken from fplephant.herokuapp.com and understat.com

    Hulk that for discussion?

I'm not going near Traore. Wolves can't seem to buy a goal right now.

Torres seems a no-brainer. Playing for city and OOP as a striker. I think at 7M he is worth the punt of rotation risk. Leicester defence doesn't look very good right now either so there could be quite a few goals in that game. Southampton could be another haul.

against Sp*rs he made so many runs and nobody passed to him because that game was about Grealish saying "look at me and my non-existent shin pads".

Torres is undeniably good value, and whilst he is starting (which is the big If) with him, about as essential as you can get. Not many 7m players are capable of hauling 18 points in a single game, but if he keeps starting there for City it could happen quite frequently.

It comes down to what you want to do with the rest of your team going forward.
Gray is cheap, nailed and looks useful. He'll enable to you cram in those premiums.
Torres - not nailed and I'd want certainty in the mid-range if I'm considering hokey-cokey with the Big Guys.
Traore - mercurial, risk v reward. I want my risks to be the Big Boys again and not have to think too much about the mid-rangers.
Sarr - I don't yet know if Watford are doing to do okay or fade. Lack of certainty shies me away.
Benrahma - Done great for me since GW1 but i don't think he'll sustain it and will get rotated. I don't have a plan to shift him out, but I wouldn't bring him in now.

tl;dr - for me, if you're going to pick and stick with 2-3 premiums, you can afford to suck 'n' see with these guys. If you need a sticker, I'd take Gray.

Will be even more rotation risk with City when KDB and Foden is back so keep that in mind.

I think you need to watch Wolves games live there is no stat for composure. If Traore was pointing a machine gun at you, you would fancy your chances. The guy has no vision and cannot pass either.

Would 2ft's and some cash ITB be enough here to avoid a WC or does WC look the best option either way?

Barnes + Ings -> 6.3m (Thinking Sarr or Gray) + Lukaku and maybe a -4 (or -8) to change either (or both) Pereira/Wilson if I'm not WC'ing.

    Sanchez
    Pereira, TAA, Coufal.
    Salah, Benrahma, Greenwood, Barnes.
    Wilson, Ings, Antonio.
    Bachmann, Shaw, Bissouma, Tsimikas.
    2.9m, ITB, 2ft.

Can always do a -4 and if more news or transfers occur, hit wc later in the week

I would just sell Wilson Ings Barnes and take a -4. Maybe even a -8 if needs be. But wouldn’t wildcard that team with 2 FTs.

What would be the best option of these two:
    A) Jota to Grey (or a mid up to 6.8m) and Vardy to Ronaldo
    B) Dallas to Allan (benched) and Vardy to Lukaku

    Cheers.

I'm having the same dilemma. To get the team I really want, I'd have to WC or spend 16 points, but, the changes would be pretty few overall for a WC (3 outfield players + 2 keepers).

I think if you feel you need it then use it. I used mine last year in GW2 and didn't find it was a massive issue, it helped me set up better for the next 6-10 weeks and helped me. I've hit the button already, said I wouldn't as I got Lukaku in already but Ronaldo and the fires I need to put out (Tsimi, Barnes, Wilson, etc.) to me means it made sense.

Stats are terrible so far this season. I think he is suffering from the lack of a consistent partner on that side. He works really well with Rashford, but now you have Pogba (hogs returns) or Sancho (settling in).

Not essential with those current points, and lucky to have a cs this week too

I mean value isn't bad for the united defense, but with Pogba and Fred cm, there will be blood

The key for Shaw is who is playing on the left side with him. He needs to trust a player either a defensive mid or a left sided player to cover his overlaps.

11 from 3 games, with a few more decent fixtures to come.
he is going to come in at pretty much exactly where I would've expected a 5.5 defender to perform - something around 4ppg.

will be shifted for James (or a discounted Chilwell if he starts starting) for the fixture swing.

This is probably old news for everyone but I just came to the realisation that these darn price rises are also caused by those new team makers each week trying to get the highest gw score.
I know money isn’t everything but with the inflated premiums this season I could use a .5 or two 🙁

    1. Dr. Rog

trade off between maximising team value, and maximising information gain before making a decision.

without this element the game would lack a dimension which makes it so much more interesting for active and invested managers.

I ignore price rises now unless I think the player represents 'value' and is looking lively when I watch live games. Got rid of my two Arsenal disasters ESR and Tierney for Duffy + Benrahma gw3 free transfers - for example. But was willing to take price drops on Harvey Barnes + Buendia. Basically if they have a good fixture or I can't bench I keep, I am trying to be more patient. Loads of options this year.

Im not sure there is a meaningful difference between him and Bamford looking at the fixtures, both on pens, both involved at the sharp end for their teams. So if funds are a key consideration, it might be better to look at him as an alternative.
