FPL

What impact will Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival have in FPL?

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s (£12.5m) move to Manchester United is dominating the discussion among Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers at present.

How to fit the 36-year-old Portugal international into our sides, his impact on existing United assets and how the transfer effects Wildcard plans are been widely debated on site and elsewhere.

There’ll be plenty of coverage on the former Juventus and Real Madrid man on our pages over the September international break, starting with this kneejerk overview of the potential ramifications of his addition to FPL.

MASON GREENWOOD

FPL have price Ronaldo up as a £12.5m forward and central striker is also a position that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the Portuguese operating in when he dons a United shirt:

“He’s evolved as a player, he used to play wide right, wide left, up front. He’s more of a centre-forward for me at the moment, definitely.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo will almost certainly get more game-time than the more peripheral Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) has to date, too, with Solksjaer adding of the veteran Portuguese:

“He is not signing to sit on the bench. He is going to make us a better team.”

Barring some bit-part appearances from Anthony Martial (£7.8m) and Cavani, Mason Greenwood (£7.6m) has been the man tasked with leading the line for United this season.

With Ronaldo arriving and Cavani building up match-fitness (not to mention dodging international duty and subsequent quarantine), those regular run-outs up top will likely be coming to an end despite his scoring of three goals in as many matches.

Ronaldo’s deployment up top doesn’t necessarily mean more benchings in itself: Greenwood has spent more of his time at Old Trafford operating on the right flank, and his goals against Southampton and Wolves came while he was stationed in a wider role. So, too, did many of his strikes in his purple patch at the back-end of 2019/20.

Above: Mason Greenwood’s passes received heatmap in 2021/22, from our Premium Members Area

The youngster has a tendency to drift right even when nominally playing as a central striker anyway so starting position is perhaps not as much of a worry – but rotation soon will be.

He may be safe for now, with Jadon Sancho (£9.3m) still looking a bit off the pace, Daniel James (£6.0m) surely now slipping way down the pecking order and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) a little way from a return.

But eventually, the competition for places will heat up, not to mention the frequency of fixtures when the UEFA Champions League starts after the September international break.

UNITED’S OPTIONS IN EACH POSITION

CF: Ronaldo, Cavani, Greenwood, Martial
LW: Rashford, Pogba, Sancho, Martial, James
RW: Greenwood, Sancho, Rashford, James
AM: Fernandes, Lingard

There are parallels to be drawn with Ferran Torres (£7.1m) at Manchester City: both mid-price midfielders have the potential to haul when on the pitch, but sustained game-time may soon be an issue.

Wilson flagged aaargh... Does it mean he needs more transfers out for a drop or is the limit the same?

What is the best option of these two:
    A) Jota to Grey (or a mid up to 6.8m) and Vardy to Ronaldo
    B) Dallas to Allan (benched) and Vardy to Lukaku

    Cheers.

I am not sure I would lose Bruno before Newcastle- Ronaldo plays in Azerbaijan on 7 September so possibly 9 September before trains with United for first time. Can see him coming on later in game to big fanfare which is normal for big signings

Personally think if he is fit, he starts....its ronaldo- a unique player and personality....

As ole said - he didn't bring him back to sit him on the bench.... I just expect him to start.....but let's see....of course big potential risk to captain ronaldo and then he doesn't start.....

Big difference from integrating new signing with 2 days training even if is Ronaldo. And United will want to bring Ronaldo on to maximise impact of signing for fans and PR which isn’t same if in starting lineup -and not as if trickiest opponents - but this is only my view and could end up regretting not making early move- would be minimum-4 for me as don’t really need to WC.

It's Ronaldo and it's not like Ole has some crazy team tactics like Bielsa. He will come straight in. Lots of people will have bought tickets for the NEW game expecting him to start.

If he's back on time with Bruno and trains well, I see no reason he can't start right away. United need help at CF. Martial was terrible GW2, Greenwood not that effective at CF either. Cavani is the potential problem. Now that he's not going away, maybe he's primed and ready to start GW3.

This is an incredible signing for only €18m.

A better player that fits Potters system to play down the left they couldn't find... Might not be an FPL option if they make him a midfielder but a player who will help Brighton massively in continuing their improving Potter performances.

As a Chelsea fan I always want them to do well and it's easier with their assets in my team.
It could be the same for United fans(which is like 50% of the people) and so probably Ronaldo is more popular than kaku

I think the concensus will be Ronny for GW4-6 and Rommy for GW7-11 (interestingly its Kane after and then back to Ronny).

If Ronny's price is 12m I will go down that route, if he is 12.5 I think I will just bring in Rommy now, as AVL(H) is a great captaincy fixture and saving an additional transfer down the road might just be worth it.

This is what I'm debating too. If Ronaldo for some reason doesn't look like starting GW4 I'll just go straight to Lukaku.

          1. Dr. Rog
            • 14 Years
            2 years, 8 months ago

Right, but Im also looking at Lukaku sitting on 99% and thinking I should make the decision now.

It really comes down to whether Ronaldo over NEW whu AVL is worth a -4 over Lukaku's AVL tot MCI. It surely must be, but if he comes in at 12.5 it would scupper the rest of my plans, in which case I would rather just have Lukaku at 11.5 rather than 11.6.

Hurry up and get the paperwork done!

The 3 games wolves played were all against teams that will attack wolves all game and so traore could counter and get chances. But is he good against low block teams that are coming up for him where he doesn't have to run a lot against just a couple of CB's?

        A. Bruno, Toney > Raph/Sarr/Traore, Ronaldo
        B. Bruno, Toney > Torres/Jota, Lukaku
        C. Bruno, 4.5 > 4.5, Ronaldo

"squad numbers must be consecutive and close to the current highest number"
The premier league rejected Renato Sanches as number 85 instead he had to choose number 35.

CR69 has the best ring to it.

        Sanchez Gunn
        TAA Shaw White Livramento Tsimikas
        Salah Bruno Greenwood Benrahma Brownhill
        Antonio Ings Toney

        1.4ITB, 1 FT

Going to wait as long as I can (price movement wise), but is Ings to DCL a reasonable plan for this week?

        Potential GW5 WC

        Leno
        TAA Reece Marcal White Livra
        Salah Grealish Raphinha Sarr Allan
        Ron Jimenez Bamford

        Ron> Lukaku in GW7

Drop Leno. I would go DCL+ Torres over Bam + Grealish. Antonio over Jimi too and possibly wolves mid over Sarr

Lukaku was the must have last week.
Torres is the must have this week.

The common thread to all this is Arsenal.
        Pukki(c).

lol me too. im holding though. all part of the plan

fwiw I think Arsenal will bounce back with the kinder fixture run. they have a quality team with a lack of on field leadership. perfect flat track bullies.

        1ft with 0.8mn itb

        Taa shaw Coufal Amartey (Tsimikas)
        Salah Bruno Benrahma Greenwood (Browhill)
        INGS Antonio Toney

        A) Ings to DCL/Jimenez

Close enough to my team, think you'll be better informed in a week.

Advice for those looking at Coady,
Wolves fans think that as we have signed Hwang it will mean that we move to 442.
With that, Coady might be dropped in favour of Boly, Kilman or Saiss.

Better to spend the extra and go for Semedo.

Watching Richarlison causing a scene at the penalty spot is unforgivable. Benetez even told him before the match DCL takes the first one.

Thing is , a seem to recall him causing a big scene like this before, with Baines. Can anyone confirm?

          Hi there

After a rather disappointing gw of 62 points, I ended up doing an annoyed and rash decision of transferring out Tsimikas for Williams before a price-drop..that didnt happen. Stupid I know..

So would you wc this team?
          0ft , OR400k
          Sanches Foster
          Shaw TAA Ayling Livramento Williams
          Salah Bruno Greenwood Behnrama Gilmour
          Antonio Ings Richarlisson

          Obviously interested in Lukaku, Ronaldo
