What are the best premium player ownership strategies in FPL?

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

This season is starting to feel like a throwback to the good ol’ days of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) where there was a practical overabundance of viable premium options and every one felt like they were essential. Those were the days where titans such as Ronaldo, Henry, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Drogba all walked the same patch of earth, each vying for a place in our team on their way to achieving FPL immortality.

Whether we’ll see the likes of those again time will tell but, with Spurs’ Harry Kane (£12.3m) and Son Heung-min (£10.1m), Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m), Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m) and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) and, soon, Cristiano Ronaldo all being options and all priced in double-figures, FPL managers will, once again, have some big decisions to make.

Premium-priced players, which for the purposes of this article will refer to players listed at £10.0m and above, are premium for a reason and, while they don’t necessarily guarantee the highest points or, in fact, points at all (I’m looking at you Bruno), they do tend to be the players who net big hauls with the greatest regularity, hence their popularity when it comes to captaincy.

Given that how we manage our premium player choices looks likely to be key to how our teams perform this season, this article will look at a few strategies FPL managers can consider when it comes to selecting the heavy-hitters.

How Many Premiums?

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 31?

Probably the most common tactic when it comes to premium players in FPL is to begin the season with two heavy-hitters and then, maybe, try and fit a third in there when your team value has increased or viable budget options emerge.

This strategy helps to avoid a potential overreliance on your heavy-hitters to perform week-in/week-out as the budget can still be spread throughout the squad. Typically, when we get into the realms of three or more premiums, the sacrifices in the squad become more evident and the importance of those heavy-hitters delivering increases.

That is not to say that the presence of premium players automatically weakens the rest of the squad. Every season is different and where you have an abundance of high-quality enabling players at relatively low cost, the inclusion of multiple heavy-hitters might not be too much of a negative at all. That is an assessment each of us will have to make, but rarely will a strategy involving heavy investment in the big-money assets avoid the need to make trade-offs entirely.

For me, given that you can only captain one player each week, more than two premiums (assuming they rotate reasonably well) feels somewhat inefficient and I tend to lean towards spreading the money throughout the squad in the hope that I can generate points from multiple sources. I’m a bit like Pep Guardiola is with midfielders when it comes to mid-priced FPL players; I’d fill my squad with them entirely if I could. I definitely don’t like being too dependent on a handful of premium assets to perform. However, this perspective is easier to say than to do, particularly when there are multiple heavy-hitters who you do not own, punishing you with huge scores each Gameweek.

Best premium strategy, assuming no injuries.

Ronaldo + one other. And the other will depend on the fixtures:

    GW4-6: Salah
    GW7-11: Lukaku
    GW12-16: Son
    GW17-21: Fernandes

I do think that our pre-season logic of going with 2 premiums still stands. Fixtures-wise your thinking looks sound, but I'm not impressed with Spurs' one-goal-a-game record and as things stand, I'd probably keep going with Salah and Kaku through GW12-16. Are you talking about losing CR7 for Kaku after GW7?

If this is your rotation, you are rotating them too often. "Easier" fixtures don't always bring more returns. Parking the bus does not give you chance to shine,

Really sorry but they do! There has been plenty of analysis on this. Premiums like Salah mostly have much higher 'point per match' against bottom 7 sides, than aginst the top 7.

Took a -4 to get to this:
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Shaw Coufal Dier (Tsimikas)
    Salah Bruno Gray Traore (Gilmour)
    Kane Antonio (Perica)

    Would you WC to this?

Doing Ings + Bruno + Tsimikas ➡ Ronaldo + Jota + Coady for -4 this GW. Gives me -

    Sanchez
    TAA - White - Coady
    Salah - Grealish - Greenwood - Jota - Benrahma
    Ronaldo - Antonio

    Foster - Livramento - Cash - Scarlett

    Thoughts? 🙂

I've played around with 3 premiums and it just doesn't work for me.

TAA is essential in my eyes so the rest of my team looks bad if I squeeze in Rom, CR7 and Mo.

If I WC this week, i'll have Mo and Rom (C) and then switch Lukaku to CR7 in GW5 and back in GW7.

From my experience I know that there will be a time for my team that I will rly need that WC, not 100% sure on CR7 as well so won't be using WC to get Jota only + some less important changes

If you need to be sure about CR7 then you will only buy him after hes banged in 3-4 goals over 2-3 gameweeks. Have to take some risks. From my experience I know there is never a time I have 5-6 injuries or so many players in bad form because I manage my team regularly so there is a case to use wildcard when you see opportunities.

      Yup. WC template looks great.

      Salah Jota Raph (Traore/Benny/Gray/Doucoure) as a 4th
      Lukaku CR7 Antonio

Easily do-able, have to make sacrifices elsewhere. Cant have them all

Ill start with DCL & TAA over Lukaku and 4.5m def but yes the template looks great.

Lukaku against a martinez-less Villa is not something im willing to go against. He will bully them. He has looked so dangerous so far against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Yes but Spurs & City after that is not great plus ill captain Salah or Ronaldo for the next 3. Also im not prepared to butcher my defence for three premiums. Also I think there is a good chance DCL will match or outscore Kaku over next 3 said this last week too and he is ahead by 7 points already.

    Best option?

    a) DCL/Toney/Raph
    b) Bamford/Jimenez/Sarr
    c) Jimenez/Toney/Jota

This is providing DCL is fit for gw4 and Jota is a starter due to Firmino’s injury

I'm going big at the back at the moment. The theory is - the 5 best attacking defenders from who I think will be the top5:

    TAA - Shaw - Cancelo - Pereira - Chilwell (I know!)

The idea behind this is, I leave them and the GK set for the whole season. There's more value in these defenders than similar value MID/ATT IMO. Then I can use my transfers to attack the fixtures for the premiums. May be a few hits in there, but seems to be working okay at the mo. If. they don't play, my bench has the cheapest playing striker and mids. (Cucho in week 1 got me 6 points). I sold Salah and spread myself to Son and Bamford last GW, so have a strong bench now to cover Chillwell/Cancelo. But I like the fact I don't have to worry about 6 players in my time. It means I can just attack with my transfers. Makes them a lot more fun too.

      People try this every year.

It's not a bad idea, but I bet you they won't be the top 5.

Of course! It's more about having reliable defenders who are as good, if not better at churning out points than mids/atts of the same value. 2 WC allows time to refresh these if needs be...

Interesting strategy. Could work. Doesn’t that hold you back from getting the best mids and forwards though? Two of those defenders are rotation risks and one is very injury prone. Jury is still out on Shaw being a good FPL asset too. And you’re not taking fixtures into account.

I'm just ignoring fixtures for the defenders - there are loads of times where the top 5 get clean sheets against each other, plus they all have attacking potential and potential for bonus even when they concede. I'm not held back from owning anyone, I am held back from owning everyone though - GW1 I had Salah, Bruno, Jota, Raphinha, Antonio. Sold salah GW3 for Bamford and Son, so I benched Jota. Essentially I have £60.5m for 5 mid/att and subs

And obviously Salah will be in the mix as well, he scored a hat trick against Leeds.
Antonio with his brilliant form against Sotok another decent option.
Don't think any player reaches the 100 EO mark this week

Leaning towards Rommy (c). Half of Villa's defence is out.

Don't discount Salah. Top scoring mid in the game against a very leaky Leeds defence that have conceded 8 in 3.

Bruno & Ronny - some doubts. does the latter impact the former, and does the latter even start? But its a plum fixture for sure. Suspect this pair combined will be the most popular choice overall.

Finally arrived at first WC draft…

    Sanchez Steele

    Semedo Shaw TAA (Livramento Duffy)

    Salah Torres Gray Jota (Allan)

    DCL CR7(12.5) Antonio.

    Thoughts?

We want to bring in players who score the most points, not the ones who Increase in price and are heavily owned.

Bring Lukaku in if you think he scores points, not just because of price rises.

Kane is a huuuge differential and opportunity to go against the expected template.
