Cristiano Ronaldo and the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL

It’s been a whirlwind start to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, with the transfer window mirroring the frenzy that we have seen on the pitch.

So, with that in mind, in this article, I will be sharing my thoughts on what we have seen so far and what lies ahead.

THE RONALDO QUESTION

I can’t start this article without addressing the arrival of one of the greatest players to have ever graced the football pitch – Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

There have been some concerns that the Portuguese powers might be waning but as the table below shows, he has maintained his consistency despite the fact that he turns 37 in February 2022.

Portugal play three games over the international break of which two are World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those happened last night – a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo bag a brace of goals and become the all-time international record goalscorer.

However, he also picked up a late booking, which means that he is suspended and does not need to travel to Azerbaijan for Portugal’s second World Cup qualifier, which is due to take place on Tuesday. As a consequence, he has been released early from international duty.

So, I have full confidence that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer will start Ronaldo in front of a packed Old Trafford in Gameweek 4.

Some have pointed out how Lionel Messi was eased off the bench in his first game at Paris Saint-Germain but Ronaldo’s case is very different. For Messi, it was the first transfer of his career, while Ronaldo is ‘returning home’ and Solsjkaer, in my opinion, is not a manager who is too stringent about players ‘adapting’ to his system. So, who makes way to accommodate Ronaldo in our FPL sides?

So, good luck and enjoy the international break.

We will be discussing Wildcard picks for those of you who have already pushed the button on the Gameweek 4 pod of The FPL Wire.

i'd look at moving the first free in that list on, Ings, Tsimi and Barnes out to Rom/Ron, 4.5 def (maybe Wolves) and whoever you can afford in that mid spot

Might do Ings, Barnes to Lukaku/Ronaldo and a midpriced midfielder. Tsimi can wait as i'm not panicking with pricechanges.

Ings can score aginst anyone though I am kt sure Villa can; Barnes has been a disaster, Tsimi needs to go as Lowton could be losing his place now they have a new RB. Grealish is a luxury transfer at the moment.

Hi....who is the better option until a likely gw7 wildcard?

    A....torres

    B...traore

My bench is bang average and not really in a great place to accept heavy torres rotation.....thanks

Whats the best transfer here (2 FTs)
    A. Bruno, Toney > Lukaku + Jota (Torres if Firmino fit)
    B. Bruno, Toney > Ronaldo + Raphinha (Traore or Sarr if I'm feeling punty)
    C. Bruno, Perica > Ronaldo, 4.5 (keeping Toney)

Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards. Would love Jota but no way to fit him in alongside Ronaldo.
Lukaku would be great for Villa but don't have much interest in him against Spurs and City.

Don't really fancy Martinez longer term with the fixture turn, I have Steer as backup, so I should have a playing GK in gw 4 vs Chelsea. (And Emi hasnt done a great job for me so far!)

    Question is:

    1) Worth a -4 to get rid or Martinez now, am eyeing up Sa most likely.

    2) Save the hit, and just keep going with Steer for GW4, and Emi until I wc later down the line, earliest being GW8.

If you have a backup keeper which you do then taking a minus four is very risky in the circumstances

I’ve gone Martinez to Sa and may then double up with Semedo or risk Tierney in the 4.9-5m slot.

  9. Is Ronaldo worth ripping up a good team for?
    The Big Fella
    • 7 Years
    2 years, 6 months ago

All the talk, understandably, is on Ronaldo and how/if to get him in. I have actually come up with a great WC team that includes him, Salah and Lukaku (along with Torres, Antonio, Jota, Raphinha) but is a bit light in defence with Wolves (4.5m) Ayling and Sanchez (Spurs), plus Livra and Duffy. Still, all three teams have good fixtures for the next several GWs.

The thing is, if I look at my team at the moment, it is actually a good team and has been scoring well for me (76 this week) and I think it will do well this coming GW too with DCL, Jota, Salah (c), Mahrez (can't keep starting on the bench forever), Son, Antonio and Toney, with Shaw and TAA in defence.

The only reason I am thinking of changing is fear. What rationale/thought process are other managers going through with Ronaldo? Undoubtedly, he is a great player but he may not even start against Newcastle. Everybody has, presumably, chosen a team for the first 5+/- game weeks when they first started so why are people ripping up their teams now? Is it fear or genuine belief that he will start the next four and score big in each of them? Yesterday I was set on doing the WC but looking at my team today, I am tempted to just wait for the time being. Lukaku is another factor - as I said, he is in my draft WC team because I will want him from GW7 and it doesn't make sense to rip my team up again in 3-4 weeks but he has always been a flat track bully and his fixtures are quite hard until GW7.

So what are people going to be doing and what is the thought process/rationale behind it? Are there many that are still sat on the fence like me, but perhaps swinging one way more than the other?

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

      Not getting him for now.

      1. The Big Fella

Why though? What people are doing is less interesting than the rationale behind it, I think

Upsets the balance of my team. Ronaldo will get great points but you get him and need to downgrade elsewhere. There are still some nice attacking picks around the 8m mark.

Cost too much, untested inthis united team. Unsettle my team too much. Covid still about so need at least two decent playjng subs. Not prepared ropart with Taa Salah or a good defence at present. There are many reasons. He is only one player and scoring half what he used to in his day and getting older by the second. Kane should easily outscore him aling with DCL and even kane is not in my immediate plans. Everyone to their own.

The reason Ronaldo appeals is 1) He's the best captain option this week if he starts, 2) if you don't currently have a premium striker spot you will need one long-term, so the restructuring required for Ronaldo is something you'll need to do anyway and 3) you have an easy route to Ronaldo now as while he's on the pitch Bruno becomes massively devalued as an asset and is someone to sell anyway.

For those reasons my take on Ronaldo is that you either get him now or hold off until their fixtures turn in many weeks' time and you don't get him if you already have Lukaku (unless on a WC).

This. For me it is as much about transferring Bruno funds to forwards. Lukaku will be the option of choice from GW7, but Ronaldo ticks the box for now. For me the question is Ronaldo then Lukaku, or Lukaku now and save the transfer. The international break has barely began so let see if there are any fires to put out between after that and if we can afford the luxury of worrying about Ronaldo or not.

    2. Patty
      • 9 Years

Personally I'm probably getting him in. Partially because I can do so without taking a hit. He has 3 easy fixtures approaching, and it seems written in the stars that he could go off. Would look to switch to Lukaku within a few weeks.

I don't think he's worth being the sole reason to WC or worth ripping your team up, but if you can get him without going beyond -4 I think its worth consideration.

      1. The Big Fella
        • 7 Years

Who will you transfer out to get him in? I agree, the next 3-4 games are quite appealing. Will he play them all though? If I could get him in on a free, I probably would too but now I am leaning more towards the wait-and-see camp.

his stats vs the good teams last season were just ok, he excelled at scoring loads vs bottom 6 teams. With Utd fixtures not being the best after Newcastle I am not bringing him from the get go but prioritizing Lukaku in to give me a premium forward spot to move quickly if needed.

Do you not think Lukaku is a bit of a bully though and also only does well against smaller teams? Ronaldo's next 3-4 are better than Lukaku's - until GW7

Spurs concede a lot of shots and crosses, that is made for Chelsea's wingbacks and Lukaku, Spurs have kept 3 very lucky clean sheets, only the City fix is hard and that's at the Bridge.

FWIW, I say it's a hard fix but under Tuchel, Chelsea beat City in the last 3 encounters, had James not got sent off, Lukaku may well have got something at Anfield.

Why? I wouldn't get him now as a standalone transfer because I remember him only scoring against weaker teams. I would have got him in, as I said in my loooooong post above, only to avoid having to rip up my team again in 3 weeks.

Yeah - I have just replied to Holmes the same thing thing. I think, thinking about it with a cold head, my current team is really good. Son, Jota and Salah could all haul in these matches plus Antonio is in great form. The more I think about it, the more tempted I am to just wait until GW7 and have a few more weeks of data to make better decisions (although I may also be priced out of some assets by then)

    5. Holmes
      • 10 Years

I need more information on him and other players in my team. Yeah, he can haul, but its not like I have never missed hauls since I started playing this game.

I dont think Ronaldo is good enough reason to WC when current team is doing fine and likely to continue to do so.

      1. The Big Fella

This is kind of my logic now that the "excitement" dust is settling and I am thinking more coldly about it. The problem I have is I can afford my current draft WC team with just 0.1 to spare. If he does haul against Newcastle, I may well be priced out unless I go for a non-playing bench to save money.

Dont worry, we will have some other alternatives by then.

I dont think its ideal to have both, Luka and Ronaldo, as long as we have likes of Bamford/Antonio/Ings.

I wildcarded had no TAA or Bruno. But had three Villa lads Ings Buendia Cash plus Barnes and Tsimikas to ship on. However unlike many others I have gone Lukaku - Antonio- Ronaldo. Ronaldo gives flexibility of switch to Vardy/Kane/DCL if required. I have Matip for Liverpool defence until gw7 no TAA

Thing about Lukaku well capable of getting an fpl return or two v Spurs and city. Remember the chances wasted by Werner in the CL final? I don’t think Lukaku would do that.

Pretty much exactly the same as me. Good start to the season with TAA, Shaw, Salah, Bruno, Antonio, Raphina and subbed in Torres in GW2 for Gundo, so I don’t feel the need to rip up my team.

Ings and Barnes probably the dead weight I’m carrying, although Leicester have some good fixtures on the horizon.

So, used my 2 FTs this week to go Bruno and 4.5 Obi to Ronnie and 4.5 Allan.

I’ll see how Ronnie does over the next 3 weeks, with that WC in the back pocket for the Chelsea fixture swing in GW7.

Nice move with Torres - I had Mahrez from the start but unfortunately he hasn't been playing (still returned points when he has come on though).

I think that is a good move from you for this week. Congrats! I would have to sell Salah (not going to happen) or Son (nice next two fixtures) to get Ronnie in without my WC so it really is WC or don't get him in (not prepared to take a -8 for him) for me

Ings out was the move anyway by this gw. The sacrifice will be Son (that i dont see getting hauls with this manager).

Can get Gray (triple toffee) or a S-Rowe punt to make it work

I've been happy with Son's returns so far. 2 goals and 3 CS points for 23 points in 3 games is pretty good I would say. But yes, massive 3 or 4 nil wins, I can't see either for the time being. Good value in their defence going forward I would say though.

I have the Ings issue and 2 free transfers. The plan was always DCL/jimenez whoever started better, so DCL but now we have Lukaku and Ronaldo it has but a spanner in the works.

I think I will be going Bruno out to Ronaldo for 3 weeks then switch to Lukaku

I WCd and have Luka, CR7, Antonio and Salah in my team and I don't have any regrets. Okay so 2 premium forwards, it's not something I've tried before, but for me thier potential for consistent big returns is too good to overlook.

I think for me having Bruno in my team makes it a slightly simpler thought process. Do I feel Ronaldo will outscore Bruno in the next say 3 GWs? I feel I can find similar options to go with either of them. Would mean a -4 as well.

Haven’t decided yet. Feel there is a chance he doesn’t start against Newcastle, but if he does he probably scores big. Would love for Ole to confirm if he’s starting before deadline.

I'm strongly considering Bruno + Ings > Torres + Ronaldo for a -4. My reasons: (1) An older, less mobile striker (in the form of Ibrahimovic) has done well for Utd in the past, by hogging the penalty area and being an expert finisher - that's exactly what Ronaldo will do; (2) Ronaldo will suck the oxygen out of Bruno's points potential, particularly if he's on penalties; (3) Solskjaer has stated that he won't be a bench player. If he confirms in the press conference next week that Ronaldo is starting then I think it's a no-brainer given that the opposition is a leaky Newcastle.

Notwithstanding that, Lukaku is still a really good pick in my opinion, even in the GWs before GW7. I think the idea that he's just a flat-track bully is misplaced. He's a different player since he was at Utd and he's now the focal point of a very good Chelsea team. Looking at Lukaku's stats from Serie A in 20-21 he scored 24 goals and 7 of those were against sides who finished 2nd-7th in the league, including 2 against AC Milan (2nd), 1 against Juventus (4th), 1 against Napoli (5th), 2 against Lazio (6th), and 1 against Roma (7th).

I set my team up with a rough plan to take out mahrez after 3-5 gameweeks and whichever of my 7.5 strikers was performing the least, in order to bring in a man city-bound Harry kane and 4.5mid.

As it turns out, I am doing exactly that move (Wilson not terribly underperforming but not keeping pace with antonio) but for Ronaldo, now. The kane move was always intended to give me flexibility to move in lukaku when the fixtures change.

I have two FT and a way to get the best caption option for GW4 and GW6 without a hit - Bruno + Wilson -> Ronaldo and Greenwood.

I expect him to start, and owning one of the greatest goalscorers in history for two very strong home games in three games is the appeal to me.

If you need to take a hit which involves Bruno out, then he becomes not worth it for me. I'm sure there are higher value moves to be made for people and Salah is also an outstanding captain for the next three.

No. Not a good team. Lukaku is pretty much as good of an option too.

However, if you are like me and have the likes of Barnes and Mahrez stinking out your midfield and 6 or 7 more transfers you would make if you could, then I think it’s worthwhile.

United aren't a good team you mean? I wouldn't go that far. I think they need a keeper and a bit of investment in the midfield, but I wouldn't say they were a bad team by any stretch of the imagination and I don't even like United

In his original post, The Big Fella was considering ripping up his team in order to include Salah, CR7 and Lukaku in his WC squad, so the title was perfectly reasonable in my opinion.
Some are trying to squeeze in three premiums, some are intending to include just one premium forward and to rotate him according to fixtures, and some are wondering whether it is really worth upgrading an in-form mid-priced forward to a premium one if it means weakening other parts of the squad.
Some would require a 4 or 8 point hit to bring CR7 in immediately if they don't want to play their wildcard yet, and he only has two easy fixtures before Lukaku becomes a better optiion in GW7.
And according to the poll, only about 50% are intending to bring him in immediately.
Anyway, it's led to an excellent discussion, and that's the important thing.

Pretty easy decision for me 3m in the bank and Ings and Bruno to switch over to Ronaldo and Son/Jota/Torres.

In your position I can understand the hesitancy a bit more. Its very team dependent as always.

Most teams wont have to rip up their team to get Ronaldo in, a minus 4 with Bruno and a forward out, Ronaldo and a midfielder in. Easy swap, and the hit will probably pay off (and i'm not a Ronaldo fan). Who wants Bruno without pens and freekicks? Who also cant get as advanced as earlier, ronaldo does not track back a lot.

And for those planning to swap Ronaldo to Lukaku in gw 7/8, i belive you are up for a tough decision if Ronaldo scores 3+ goals before that. Fixtureproof...

When I heard the news I knew I had to have him. Bruno had to go and it’s Ronaldo.

I’m not a Man U fan but just look at what’s he’s done his whole career.

My team was doing quite well but with this news I feel it’s the perfect time to change a few players.

Giving I need to get rid of Ings anyway and of course on face value, Bruno shouldn’t be as productive then this 2 move swing seems the best option whilst saving WC for another few weeks of data.
Hate wc’ing after international break to get stung by rotation.

There is a 'value balance' to teams that bringing in Ronaldo upsets, the points per £ for the likes of Antonio, Wilson, Toney, Richa, DCL, Ings, Watkins, Bamford etc can be very high in comparison to Ronaldo at 12.5 and it's then how well you balance the loss of one of these medium priced attackers that will be forfeited by including Ronaldo. Swapping around one of the aforementioned forwards is a single transfer, swapping out Ronaldo is a double transfer and invariably there are also other fires to put out, so future issues are not easy to deal with.

The payoff in getting Ronaldo up top is that you simply have to find the money from midfield and I don't see the 7.5 - 8.0 midfielders having such a high ceiling (more completion in midfield, rotated more, different formations) as the similar priced forwards and are not 'talisman' nailed as much as the forwards.

I am finding Lukaku is a fantastic way in to the Chelsea attack that simply wasn't available before with all the rotation last season.

So in simple terms, Ronaldo is a great FPL option but his inclusion causes ripples throughout the rest of the squad and means lots of other exclusions.

For me it's a wait and see rather than rip up balanced squad.

Probably a few in my position - I see one of the big benefits of getting Ronaldo is moving a premium spot from midfield to striker

This also allows me to Do a move in 5 or 6 for a Chelsea defender, get lukaku in 7 and then potentially save the wildcard further after seeing as a lot of us are already on Raph and or Ayling who also have the pick of the fixtures from 7 on

So even though I’m not sold that Ronaldo will be great from the get go, making a move like Bruno and ings > sarr and Ronaldo is looking tempting for the money in the bank it gives (1.5m) and the flexibility it gives to get Kane and lukaku in the future

    I have son, btw!

Agreed. Funny how just a couple of weeks ago at the start of the season there seemed to be no premium strikers worth having and now there are potentially 3. Having at least one gives you the flexibility to switch between CR7/Lukaku/Kane in a single transfer depending on form and fixtures. Plus Bruno is less attractive now IMO as probably no longer on pens.
