It’s dull ache; a nagging undeniable sickness in the pit of the stomach that soon disperses on distraction, but makes its return every time my mind recalls this evening’s events at St James’ Park. All this couldn’t be more self-inflicted.

Those up early enough to take in this morning’s β€œPreamble” will be aware of the cause. Faced with fielding at least one Liverpool defender against Newcastle, I decided to β€œbe clever” and field both Konchesky and Kyrkiakos on the premise that an out-of-form Newcastle would splutter against a Liverpool defence that, on current form, was the most miserly in the league.

I duly played both my Liverpool defenders and chose to bench Andy Carroll to back my hunch to the hilt. That was undoubtedly my worst decision of my Fantasy season. You surely don’t need me to go over the facts of tonight’s 3-1 result; please spare me from that…

While there was some logic behind it, I chose to ignore the fact that, before tonight’s game, Carroll had scored a goal or an assist in 8 of Newcastle’s last 9 games. On these very pages, in this very column a few days ago, I noted how Carroll had returned points and kept Newcastle afloat despite their dismal form. Somehow, for some reason, I chose to ferret these facts away in a cupboard in my head and drown out the screams with my β€œclever” new plan.

Such an error was overdue to be fair. I haven’t felt the sting of such an mistake this season so far and it’s a condition that most Fantasy Managers have to suffer once or twice in a campaign. The trick now is to lock it away, somehow rediscover the hunger and move on. I can hope for a miracle from the rest of my team, a freak bout of flu to bring Carroll off my bench, but the cold facts are that I’m staring at a big red arrow and my worst points tally of the season.

This all comes a week after I’d climbed to my best FPL ranking and closed the gap on rival Granville to 3 points. I don’t need bloody Alanis Morissette to point out the irony of it all. It’s no coincidence either.

The real problem is I can’t even put it down as a β€œlesson learned”; I’m pretty sure I’ve had this lesson ten times over the years, filed it under β€œcommon sense” and forgotten it.

Two things about this game we play are clear to me tonight. Firstly, it’s bloody hard to recall lessons learned and recall mistakes from the past – particularly the one that states β€œNever follow a good Gameweek by trying to be a smartarse”.

Secondly, and perhaps most poignant of all, Fantasy Football is a painful game when you’ve only got yourself to blame.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Mulling over a Liverpool central defender but unsure of the repercussions of Agger coming back-better to play safe with Konchesky? Cheers people!

I'm sticking with konchesky, thought about kriakgos but they look really open especially away from home so don't want 2 of their defenders...i'd stick with him as he will bag clean sheets at home and will be a regular

      +!

i would stick with konch, fairly safe in his postition (tho agger has played at lb and might displace konch if hodgson decides to give him a rest) and and creating chances for assists.

      +1

If Matt wasn't already guaranteed to win, then he is now after his duet with her tonight. Rebecca was completely shown up by Christina... Never really understood why the judges love her (Rebecca) so much. She's obviously a nice and completely harmless person, unlike that evil brat Cher, but she's pretty characterless and her performances just end up boring me.

It would be a travesty if Matt doesn't win.

superdunny speaks sense. shows like this are for the kids at the back of class who spent their time lookin out the window remarking on how great the world outside the school perimiter was. i am generally one of jamsiep's greatest fans when it comes to things footie-related due to his ability to speak down at people from a self-dug hole but x' factor and its ilk is what i believe Dante refered to as the 7th circle of hell.

Agree completely. When I was last in England the whole place was abuzz with talk about Susan Boyle and some boy band dancing troupe who ended up winning it. People who I thought were friends were really into it! Do the English really lap up what they're told to? Seems so. Sad to see a once great empire in such decline!

        Meh.

Not being funny or anything, but people in the Blue Square Premier occasionally score goals like that. Until he starts doing it regularly I'm not buying into the idea that his all round game is good, like some people were saying after the game. Technically he is pretty poor. I'm not criticising him, obviously that's not his main attribute, I'm just criticising the people praising him.

I do, good goal that, but Adebarndoor's one betters it. Problem is you rentboyz need to find a replacement for the drog and pronto. I'm not even going to bother mocking sturridge anymore, it's no fun. Drogs illness and general attitude in smaller games makes him look a shadow of his former glory though. 32...

To be honest, his attitude in the smaller games has never been that great. It's incredibly frustrating.

I don't mind the Sturridge mocking... I don't like him, but for some reason a fair few Chelsea fans want him in the side instead of Anelka/Malouda, which is total madness. Sturridge is almost as brain dead as Kalou, and is also incredibly selfish and one footed.

Hopefully we'll sign Torres in the summer and cut Didier loose. Send him back to Marsielles.

ANYWAY- the point regardless of Carroll's ability is he is a points whore, and you simply can't ignore those players if you want to climb the ranking. I'm doing my best with Nasri and it's killing me! As did Batface earlier on in the season.

I'll probably accept defeat and get him back in when playing my second wildcard.

Just hoping that he either gets injured, or doesn't do too much damage against:

                    bir MCY tot wig

....which to be honest, I don't expect him to. Anyway, I'd genuinely rather have Odemwingie and Torres at the moment. Don't know what to do with Drogba though. If I did get rid of him for Carroll then I'd have far too much money in the bank which I genuinely wouldn't be able to spend.

What's all this about a second Carroll assist?

If you look from the above view, you can see a Liverpool player deflect the ball more to the right, and it goes into the area in a different direction than where it was heading, and then Barton gets on the end of it. Carroll wasn't trying to head the ball to Barton, he was trying to flick it on for Ranger to chase.

*I don't have Carroll and am biased in not wanting him to get the assist.

Also, if the ball doesn't get diverted slightly by Skrtel, then Barton isn't getting there first to poke it past Reina. Barton NEEDS the slight deflection to score, and he wasn't even the intended recipient of the 'pass' from Carroll.

On a separate note, when is Carroll going to fukk up and score 2 points, he's really pissing me off now.

What if it's a draw? Do you both then not post for a week?

If you win, i'll be in the bunker, don't you worry about that. This board will go nuclear. If you win AND Nasri scores the server will break.

What will actually happen though is Rooney will get a brace and you are going to lose 2-0 πŸ˜‰

To be fair, we'll only be missing Vermealen, and thats Wenger's fault for not bringing in a decent replacement.
