3rd defensive spot is open for me. TAA and Semedo are fairly locked in. With 2x 4M defenders, Livramento + Duffy/Williams probably Williams.

With 5.6ITB i’m looking to Shaw v Digne v Tierney. They’ll likely make way for Reece James in GW7 anyway. Looking at fixtures:

    Shaw (NEW, whu, AVL)
    Digne (BUR, avl, NOR)
    Tierney (NOR, bur, TOT)

I think judging on fixtures it’s between Shaw and Digne. Attacking threat all 3 are good options. Both Shaw and Digne have good target men to aim for and both take set pieces.

Cons for either, Arsenal are poor, and have Spurs in GW6, United play a tough West Ham, i think Digne’s fixtures are slightly better but Everron are poorer defensively than Man Utd. Digne is 0.1 cheaper than Shaw ATM.

Anyone care to offer any opinions? Who would you choose? And are there any better alternatives (bearing in mind it’s likely 3GW’s at most)

I faced the same dilemma and decided to stick with Shaw, partly due to ownershipz

I've gone with Shaw, because I have Lukaku instead of CR7 in my team...and don't want to be missing on United points in case Ronnie hits the ground running

Rudiger. If they can stop LFC scoring in open play at anfield with 10 men for half of the match. I doubt spurs or city will trouble em.

    Bottomed, so no replies.

    Current team:
    Sanchez
    Taa Shaw WHITE
    BRUNO SON BENNY Traore
    LUKAKU TONEY Antonio

    Steele BROWNHILL Livra TSIMIKAS

    Proposed wildcard team:
    Sanchez
    Taa Shaw SEMEDO
    SALAH TORRES RAPH Traore
    CR7 DCL Antonio

    Steel SISSOKO Livra WILLIAMS

Obviously I dont NEED to wildcard hut doing it from a position of strength seems good? Especially with a solid plan where I can get Lukaku (+1 Chelsea) by losing either TAA, Salah or CR7, depending on form, with two FT before 7.

    Yes or No?

Your current team could easily outscore your new team I don't see much in it. I'd at most take a hit this week personally.

Let me tell you about my history with the first wildcard and what I learned from it.

I've screwed up my first wildcard in each of the last two seasons.

In 19/20 I had an amazing start and was ranked 8K after 3 weeks. I held my wildcard way too long and didn't get Vardy or Leicester when the fixtures swung in 8. Wildcarded GW18 losing TAA for one week (the week he got 24 points). I had a shot at a really elite rank if I was willing to play the fixtures and bring in the budding Leicester team who had started strong performance wise and were coming into a great run of fixtures.

In 20/21 I had a disastrous start and WC'ed in GW3 to right the ship. I brought in Havertz, Foden and triple Wolves... Yeah it went about as well as you'd expect... I was 30 points down on my WC after the first week. My team was not built as poorly as I originally thought with Wilson delivering good differential points. The only decision I got really right was bringing in Martinez as the 4.5m keeper. If I had WC'd a bit later I would've been able to restructure and bring in Fernandes when United got going after their tired start.

Both times I should've wildcarded in GW7-9 period. If you build your squad well in GW1, with consideration for the first few fixtures and some flexibility, you should always be able to make it to 7-9 in decent shape. It's optimal for a few reasons imo.

    1. You need more than 3 GWs to figure out established glue players like the best 4.5m GK, the budget attackers to hold for weeks (Grealish, DCL). Can people actually say who the best 4.5m keeper is if WC'ing this week? Who are the best 6-7m mids? I think we'll get an answer to that in the next few weeks.

    2. Team value. The earlier you WC the likelier you are to retain high team value. It's not as important as point 1, but it does factor in when you're talking about players you will want for like 20 weeks. Once you know who those players are, move early for them, and give them time to score points and build team value.

    3. Hop on fixture swings during the post-international break. The post intl break period around mid October time is one of the most predictable of the year imo. Teams still have it all to play for, they have had time to adjust to playing unlike the first few games, and they have regular, but not jam packed, PL games. December is too crowded and causes rotation, but October time, every team has something to play for, starting XIs are established and form players are more likely to sustain it.

As a result, I'm eyeing GW8 this season in line with the fixture swing from Utd > Chelsea as well as the end of the Intl Break to try and finally get my first WC correct in recent times. LIkely what I'm gonna do is save 2 FTs, use both in GW7 to remove Salah and XX for double Chelsea and WC him back in after the City game in 8.

All very valid points. I think GW4 WCers are building a team that can make it’s way to GW7 and onwards. Look at the current WC template. It’s 2/3 transfers away from what GW7 will likely be looking too. With the exception of the Chelsea boys.

I like the sound of it, especially as I'm resisting the urge to wc now myself. Im looking at double Chelsea defence and big rom going forward from gw7.

Looks a pretty drab week to WC to me. I'll have 2-3 Chelsea players by the time it comes around. Nobody else really with an appealing fixture swing. Southampton? Na, prefer the look of Wolves, Arsenal, Watford in 4 and Norwich/Leeds in 5. Along with pumping my team full off all the desirable players this IB that are going up 0.1 so I can choose more easily

It's not a drab week. It's an informed week. Can you really answer point 1 well at this point? Are Wolves actually great when the fixtures turn or are they just wasteful? Who is the best 4.5m keeper? Who among Sarr, Raphinha, Benrahma, Traore, Mbeumo is the guy to hold until Christmas?

Unless your team has a whole bunch of duds like Barnes, Mahrez, Werner type of gambles, you should be able to make do with a 4 point hit now and survive until 8.

Maybe you'd do better at your WC if you didn't just knee jerk defensively and took time to consider other view points.

Point 1 is fine but it's based on an assumption of a low risk approach. Having loads of information means other people also have loads of informatiom (ergo diminished rank returns within that 'elite' ). Acting in GW3 probably is higher risk but higher reward in climbing rank within that elite

I stand by it being a drab week, certainly for me. I own one Chelsea player, I will own two or three without using a WC. This GW is much more appealing

Are you getting triple Chelsea this WC?

I did the opposite in 19/20 of the kneejerk. I decided against the WC in 7-9 that year because I thought my team was fine. Not great, fine. I could've made some really impactful changes like bringing in Vardy + Maddison but I didn't because I was scared I'd waste my wildcard.

I made mistakes by being too patient and by kneejerking. So I'm not sure it's fair to say I'm considering other view points. I've failed both sides of the coin.

There is no formula to WCing and you won't learn much from looking at previous outcomes. A terrible error of judgement last year could be a masterstroke this year. The only thing to consider is right now and the future

Agree - that old cliche again, but there isn’t a one size fits all approach

The rogue waves for early wildcards this year are Ronaldo & Lukaku - some folks will want to hop their surfboards onto those ASAP to see how high they can get

I agree. But I also think the stars are not aligned this week for the majority of teams to WC.

There are still too many unknowns.

I already have one Chelsea. I require no more than 1 or 2 transfers to move to a double or a triple. Given there are 3 available transfers between now and then and I'm setting my team out exactly how I want, I'd be very unlucky to have to even take 1 hit by GW7.

I think if you're WC'ing and then further booking in transfers you're asking for a lot of trouble imo. It never really goes the way you think it will.

Odd criticism from someone who is 'booking in' a WC. I'm not booking in anything. Chelsea might be rubbish, players might get injured. Other teams might emerge that are better prospects.

Nonetheless, I'll likely go for a double up which is one of my three transfers available. Let's be honest, if you're arguing that booking in one of three transfers, (even two really) is shakey ground then you're really clutching at straws to criticise my approach.

I'm not criticizing your approach. You seem really hostile about this. By all means if you feel this is the way you want to go, go for it.

There are lots of teams where a GW4 wildcard is appropriate. But for my team and the way I want to do this, I think GW7-9 is the best. The example I gave was that GW8 would appear to be the most appropriate.

Next week Salah, CR7, and Raphinha could all get injured and I'd be forced to WC. It's a flexible game but it shouldn't prevent you from making plans. Maybe I misunderstood, but it seemed like you were saying you were planning to bring in Chelsea players organically for 7 or 8. For me, that would be too slow since they look like Champion contenders and very little from these next 3 games would prevent me at least from going for at least 2. They could lose all of their next 3 vs AVL tot MCY and I would still buy at least 2 from GW7 onwards.

I never said I was tied to WC'ing in 8, just that it seems to be the appropriate time given what we know and what I've learnt from my past mistake. I said I was 'eyeing a WC in 8'.

I'm not saying that my way is necessarily the best way. Just having a discussion and putting forth what I've observed. You are free to come to different conclusions. But at least let's discuss without making it about 'criticism'

You're not really discussing anything. You're doing what you usually do, which is make a post and then respond very defensively when anyone disagrees with you. And then project your own feelings onto others by calling them things like 'hostile'

I said it was a drab week to WC when you take Chelsea out of the equation (which you can easily do with FTs, in particular if you already own one). This seems to have really got under your skin.

It was only last week GW2 Camzy was belittling people going Salah (C) over Bruno (C).

Both flopped but Bruno flopped harder whilst Salah actually looked far better on the day.

This guy doesn't actually listen to counter-arguments, just wants to show off his 'elite' thought process when despite it backfiring quite a lot.

Just an example. There will likely be other fires that mean I'll keep Salah for that game.

But if I'm sitting very pretty with no Chelsea, I'll gladly swap Salah vs MCY for Lukaku vs SOU for one week.

Swapping Salah out for any home game, for any player, is proper madness - not guaranteed to fail, but he’s so likely to return from either play or a penalty that it’s more like self-sabotage

I think you're overstating his importance a bit. He's regressed points wise every season and I don't think he's like this untouchable god like he was 4 years ago.

Keeping an open mind about players also means being open to some players not being as good as you might think they are as well as giving some players with a history of disappointment the benefit of the doubt.

Salah has 0.6 npxG from 3 games vs nor BUR CHE. That's behind 33 players.

I'm not saying sell him now, but if he gets a tough run of fixtures and the team form isn't lining up, I can see myself letting him go for a little while.

He’s just put up 10 points at home to Chelsea & has scored in 3 of his last 4 against Man City… he has 135 goal involvements in 148 PL appearances for Liverpool… 78 goal involvements in 74 home appearances…

Selling one of the most destructive players in the game before a home match just doesn’t jump out at me as the key to a good GW7 - it feels more like trying to be too clever - but as I said, it’s not guaranteed to fail either

WCing early (GW3) was a tragedy for me past two seasons. Will be keeping it longer this time.

I actually think you can keep the WC for longer than GW8. Having put my current team into livefpl's team planner and planned transfers, my GW8 side looks very good...

The value of a WC later diminishes though. I screwed up by waiting too long in 19/20. If you wait until you're behind to WC you're merely playing catch-up and can be susceptible to overplaying. Last year Mark waited until really late to WC and honestly it didn't do him much good.

Can be great if you're really unlucky and lose a bunch of players at the same time, but it's unlikely to be best used to get out of jail.

Your mistake in 19/20 seems to have been more not picking up quality assets with strong fixtures in Vardy/Maddison, whether through WC or FTs.

If I can pick up the likes of Mount/Lukaku in GW7 without a hit, which I currently can, the value of WC8 is diminished for me.

I had Vardy and Maddison on the radar I just couldn't move quickly enough for them. There are always some players like that in any given week.

Just like how relatively few people not on WC are buying DCL this week. Most are swapping for Ronaldo or Lukaku. DCL is a nice to have but not a priority transfer in imo unless you're among the rare brigade of non-WC Bruno keepers.

This is another huge factor. The earlier you use a wildcard in theory the longer you will benefit. Second wildcard is held by most for ages waiting for dgws. Playing it way early can get a huge points advantage by the time dgws come around

All valid points. I’ve always had my best seasons wildcarding between GW3-6. I think jumping on players early to amass team value is the way to go. You can easily plan now for 3 GW time with the fixture swings.

Great points Camzy and completely. I have had a similar story with my first wildcards last two seasons which were the biggest reason behind me finishing 141k & 175k.

Really want to nail it this season and like you said GW8 seems like the perfect week for it.
Currently thinking Salah & DCL out for Lukaku & Mount/Havertz in GW7 and then wildcard in GW8 to get Salah and the best 3 Chelsea players.

Isn't something that gets missed the weeks preceeding wildcard. My team is currently ok but not great, so I will be running it into the ground with very short term transfers until the team is completely broke. That should get me extra points as well compared with long term planning.

I blew both my wildcards last season. My biggest take away was that I thought too much about the players that I was bringing in, but I didn't think about the players I was taking out.

The reason I didn't wildcard this week is that I have nobody other than Ings and Bruno that I need to remove. I have 2 free transfers so it's sorted with that.

By game week 7 I will have 4 players that need to potentially be removed (if everyone stays healthy). It might be the right time to wildcard then as it is 4 changes in the starting 11 and i can rejig my bench.

I don't know how the upcoming weeks will pan out but it may be that I take out one of those players, so if I only need to take a minus 4 to remove the players I need to in gmw7/8 I may not even use it.

The optimum time in my opinion is to use it when you have too many fires to put out. Forget about fixture swings and all that nonsense. If your team is in bad shape use it.

So you wildcard, then the next week see what your team scored vs what your old team scored, and that's what you judge it on?

Here's the thing, good players will score goals and get assists. Every transfer out and transfer in have the potential for large points swings week to week. It's luck. Changing your whole team increase this volatility 10 fold. It is the same whenever you use it. Gw8 will be the same. These swings are meaningless, part of FPL. You can lose 50 points instantly with the wildcard and still assess the situation and see it was a good decision and well executed.

Your way of thinking here is just kneejerk.

I'm genuinely surprised at some of the takeways from this post.

I never said that I judged my wildcards as failures because they didn't work immediately. More so that the timing would have been better if I had done it sooner in 19/20 and later in 20/21 for the good of my long term game.

I'm aware that my communication style can rub some the wrong way, but I like sharing my thought process though because it helps to write it down and maybe some folks will benefit. Joining FFS helped me the most by changing the way I thought about the game from discussions (and arguments!) way back in the day with the likes of Zophar and Triggerlips.

You make some great points Camzy and people don't have to agree. I have been playing FF since 2001 and FPL from 2006 and I have made many mistakes.
I don't see why there has been so much negative reaction and please don't let that stop you making insights. In the end it is only advice and people reading can choose to take it or not.
I love reading these threads and sometimes it makes me think twice. I am actually only on 221 points, way behind in terms of the first three weeks, but I am happy with the total as I know an average of 75 points would probably win the league.
One piece of advice I can give is that if you get really stressed with decisions each week, it will probably be to the detriment of you final score, whereas having a plan in place, and reacting to small adjustments is a great strategy. I generally wildcard and take a few hits in first 10 game weeks, not minding the odd hit (-4) to build the value of squad, so I can build over the season.

Anyway!! My main point is I, and I am sure many, like your insights and would appreciate them coming as often as you can.

      Happy Sunday people

Holding wc, maybe a bad idea but have had gw7 in mind for a while and my team isn't falling apart just yet. Current team has a few weaknesses I need to sort out, just Barnes out or Barnes+ings for -4?

    Sanchez
    Shaw, Taa, livramento
    Bruno, Salah, Barnes, Benrahma,
    Ings, dcl, Antonio

    Ayling, gilmour, tsmikas

It's tricky, barnes to a 7.0 would be the only option if it's just the ft, can't reach Torres for 0.1 ...but a hit could be torres and bamford in...but bamford has pool this week but great fixtures thereafter. Traore is also appealing. Maybe Jimi if I want to take a bit of a punt.

I’d get rid of Barnes and ings for a -4 I think but if you’re very adverse to hits you could just get rid of Barnes for the like of sarr, either will obviously mean keeping Bruno over Ronaldo so up to you to weigh up the pro’s and cons of that

What is your opinion on hits?

A concept I've not seen much discussion on. Some players use them to great effect (LR, Sutherns) while others tend to take very few (Fabio Borges). I was a hit-happy player last 2 seasons but looking to reduce that now, 4 points is a lot to lose and they can accumulate quickly, but would love to get some discussion going.

I like taking them but also trying to cut down a bit, will take one this week to bring in Ronaldo most likely

More inclined to take them in order to restructure team for the medium term in this instance getting the premium striker slot for Ronaldo, Kane or lukaku

-4s only when I am extremely unhappy with the team I have and falling behind in the chase. Else wait for 1 week to make the other transfer, unless the players you are getting in have higher chances of recovering the hit points in the same GW

All situational - not one size fits all

There’’s probably a rather loose order of precedence with them, from most justifiable, to least, in a single gameweek:

      Hits for:
      1. Captaincy
      2. Attackers
      3. Defenders
      4. Goalkeepers
      5. Subs

And hits for Team Value are a big no-no in my book - don’t worry about TV at all

It depends how you play. I think the key is a consistent approach across the season.

Without hits team turnover takes 11 weeks. Increasing the number of hits reduces this number. Different transfer strategies require different horizons to be used in planning.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

I've used that planner we were sent to map out my whole season. With the obvious caveat that you can't foresee injuries and other events, I have knocked up a very pleasing plan which involves a steady stream of 1FT every week and one single hit over the whole season. I'd love to stick to it as far as possible.

    9. LSK

Transitioning your team is key imo. Doing this too slowly keeps you behind the curve and does more damage than a few hits, both in points and team value. I use hits to stay ahead of form and fixture swings, getting my team in shape quickly and then maintaining it from there with free transfers until I feel like I’m behind the curve again. Works okay for me.

If its involves getting rid off two/ three bad picks and getting in good picks its ok. If the hit involves downgrading a good player to afford your transfers…there will often be tears.

Depends on your ability to predict the future. And you need to be very objective about how good you are at predicting outcomes in FPL.

There are some people who, on average, are good at predicting outcomes (not saying they get it right all the time, but they get it right more than enough to profit). Others are not.

If you are a good predictor, then hits are worthwhile. If you are not a good predictor then hits are not worth it.

Yeah, there have been times where I've thought I should stop watching BlackBox because Mark's style was having too much of an impact on my decisions, and I don't believe I can replicate its success. He pretty much goes against most other pundits' advice to not "get differentials for differentials' sake" and pulls it off more often than not.

This is something I've thought about a fair bit. I think a minus 4 is only worth it if it is for a player that you plan on holding for a lot of games. If you want that player for 4 to 6 gameweeks then it may be worth it if the player you are removing has a tough run of fixtures for that period.

Last season was my first season playing as an "engaged" manager and I took far too many hits because I wanted the players right now. So dumb when I think about it.

Gambling points just increases risk for higher potential reward. As diesel said it depends how on point your predictions are. My best ever season I got top 100 spending 4+ points every gw..My worst ever season I was very cautious and conservative

To me, the manager to emulate is Magnus Carlsen. He makes a good number of very maverick upside chasing moves, but conserves transfers so he doesn't need to take as many hits as someone like Lateriser.

As a further advantage, very few try to follow his methods closely because he doesn't create FPL content. You have to take the time to go and look at what he does yourself.

Long one. Sorry, but not sure if I should wildcard Ron in or not...

    A)
    -4 and keep wildcard

    Sanchez (Bachman)
    TAA Shaw Coufal (Tsimikas Duffy)
    Salah(c) Benrahma Torres Greenwood (Raph)
    DCL Antonio Toney

    B)
    Use wildcard

    Sanchez
    TAA Reguilon Coady
    Salah Greenwood Jota Raphina Torres
    Ronny Antonio
    (Steele Dennis Livramento Williams)

Gray or ESR, maybe whichever of Trincao or Podence stays nailed

0.1 opens you up to the likes of Sarr, Traore & Soucek though

Elnyoussi somehow posted a colossal 1.6 XG vs Newcastle too, although not sure whether that was just a freak

Cheers, unfortunately .1 off the more decent options if I'm getting Ronaldo in, which is the nature of the game. Quite like the look of Trincao to be honest, who had 2 big chances last game and played well.

I agree, what makes people think he'll outscore Lukaku over the next 2. Tottenham defense is laughable and WHU could easily park the bus against United

I see a lot of 3 premium teams don't have a City and Chelsea defender in them.

Also a lot of cheap mid punts like Sarr and Gray.

I mean, is having Lukaku really worth that?

I know we all have transfers and our teams are fluid but this is what I'm working towards.

    Raya
    TAA Dias Shaw James
    Salah Greenwood Torres Benrahma
    Ronaldo Antonio

    Gunn Dennis Sissiko Dunk

Surely that team over a few weeks will outscore a team filled with Southampton defenders and Wolves midfielders?

From what I remember Lukaku was a bit of a flat track bully, plus probably isn't on pens. Hard couple of fixtures after the next game. Wouldn't get till gw7.

Yet to see a wildcard team with 3 premiums that I like. Not a single one looks worth it, and it's a struggle to make one myself. Happily sitting back now whilst 1000's burn their most powerful chip.

      Best ~4.5m midfeilder and why?

      Who's your favourite ~4.5m midfielder?
      - Allan
      - Bissouma
      - Brownhill
      - Gilmour
      - McArthur
      - Skipp
      - Sissoko
      - Other(?)

May be skipping Bissouma as he takes up a possibly handy Brighton spot (and is 4.6m).

Gilmour. Nailed to start, has a bit of assist potential, doesn't use up a valuable spot in other teams.
