The best FPL forwards to consider as Calvert-Lewin and Antonio replacements

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) set for a spell on the sidelines and a ban ruling Michail Antonio (£7.9m) out of Gameweek 5, many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are unexpectedly in the market for a new forward.

At the time of writing, the pair are the two most-sold forwards in FPL, but should we be selling them, and if so, who are the best replacements?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Coufal White Livramento
    Salah Jota Greenwood Benrahma Gilmour
    Ronaldo Antonio Toney

    1FT

    A) Coufal --> Marcal/Semedo
    B) Benrahma --> Sarr/Traore/Gray
    C) Benrahma + Coufal --> Raphinha + Marcal -4

Leaning towards C as Raphinha is the only midfielder in the value bracket that I am comfortable with in the long run and I plan to keep my WC for later. Second -4 in a row though stings...

    First draft WC-weaknesses?
    Sanchez (Steele)
    James, TAA, Duffy, Marcal, Livra
    Traore, Gallagher, Raphinha, Salah, Gray
    Dennis, Ron, Rom

    0.1 in the bank.

Relying on Dennis, Gallagher and Gray week in, week out isn't going to work long term imho.

Possibly, but they can rotate and sometimes play a 442. But I am not sure which premium to drop.

My view would be to drop Lukaku and then bring him in for Ronaldo in 2 weeks when the fixtures switch. This last week was the only week they both had a good fixture.

Midfield is way to weak right now in my opinion.

If you were to keep the 3 premiums, I would downgrade Dennis to a 4.5 and maybe James to a 5m. Gives you 1m to atleast upgrade 1 of those midfielders to give you more flexibility.

If Torres starts tonight, I'm potentially looking at 9 starters next GW with only Livramento on the bench for cover. (1FT & 0.0 ITB).

In view of this, which of these potential transfers do you like?

    a) Torres to Raphinha
    b) Torres to Traore
    c) Torres/Christensen to Raphinha/James (-4)
    d Torres/Christensen to Traore/James (-4)

As a Newcastle fan I'm shocked to see people bringing in ASM. He looks amazing in the highlights and is our 2nd best player, who has the most potential.

I would liken him to Traore. He's not a great finisher, doesn't assist that often and usually flatters to decieve. If/when it all clicks we have an £80m player on our hands, just not sure that will ever happen and certainly won't in this Newcastle team under this manager.

I would get the argument for him if he was classified as a midfielder. But as a striker he just won't score enough to justify the price tag.

Massive drop of the ball from FPL by setting him as a striker and Jacob Murphy as a midfielder.

ASM is a terrible option. I think what people are doing is chucking Toney and seeing what they can get for 6.5. ASM tops the points table at the mo. The more sensible thing to do would be to play or bench Toney and use 2FT next week, but a lot of people just can plan ahead.

Don't really like any of the Wolves attackers.

If Jimenez gets back to the player he was prior to the fractured skull then maybe.......would need to see him score first though and have a big game for Wolves

There fixtures and underlying stats are encouraging.
But the fact that Traorè with his sluggish finishing would not allow him to meet his expected goals numbers is a factor for preferring Jiménez.

Otherwise I really like Bamford over Raphinha and would love having a midfielder from Wolves for those extra cleansheet points.

I just got offered Mahrez for Traore in draft. Any other season I would accept this in a heart beat but given the limited playing minutes do we see this changing anytime soon?

I’d expect Mahrez to score more in 2000 minutes than Traore would in 3000 minutes this season. With a decent squad in draft I would take that trade.

I’d go for Adam Armstrong in that bracket

      Good fixtures and attacking manager

He’s well positioned to nick a goal vs City at the weekend with his screaming pace on the break & 6 good fixtures in the 7 games after that

      1. Gabbiadini
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

Yes, I am targetting Armstrong gw8 but the next few weeks are a watch.
Adams & Broja are also demanding of starts, so there's healthy competition.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

Yeah hopefully he doesn’t drop Armstrong - I think he sees him as another potential Timo Werner type from their spell together at RBL… (whether that’s a good thing or not!)

He seems to be really limiting Broja’s minutes thus far so I’d say he’s the designated impact sub as things stand, but could be a prospect

          1. Gabbiadini
            • 6 Years
            2 years, 6 months ago

            Yes, I see it similar.
Armstrong, I agree with you entirely. This type of player is integral to a RH system. Hence why he was scouted to replace Ings who during his time at Southampton was arguably the best striker defensively in the league.

He spoke in the press conference after the West Ham fixture that Broja needed a bit of a 'kick' in terms of his training when he first arrived.
Armstrong and one of Adams/Broja to me seemed the likely complementing partnership, however, despite his height, Broja has a real turn of pace so it will be intriguing how effective he can be in the press. Armstrong has previously played on the wing so could all 3 squeeze into the one system, I am not sure.
We also played a 4-1-4-1 formation on the weekend; RH has referred to be able to adopt more systems this season due to having more alternatives on the bench.
            A watch for me.

I'm future-planning for an Antonio replacement, maybe around GW10. I'm scouting Edouard and hoping he'll become nailed. I'll be keeping a canny eye on Hwang and even Broja to see if they start in coming weeks. Then there's Armstrong as a sort of safe option. But jumping in now is to leap into the unknown. I don't like blind punts like that.

Mid: Salah, Jota, Benrahma, raphinha, gilmour
    Att: Ronaldo, Toney, Antonio

Comparing Leeds this season to last as well as Bamford/Raphinha compared to last season, I would say that underlying stats are fairly similar. Having played Liverpool and United I'm not to surprised of a slight drop either. Should come good for this fixture run IMO

    Question for the group.

    I bought LaPorte at 5.5

    His value is now 5.6

When I went to transfer him out only 5.5 was added to my account. Is this a bug or is there something else I am missing?

Bank is not the primary factor to ladder, but it does help...

Why isn’t Chris Wood on here? His XG is better than Jimenez and Pukki and long term fixtures are immense.

Took a hit -8 on Sunday 2,9ITB, wanted CR7 and Gallagher, the only way was ESR to Gallagher, Barnes to Bissouma and Antonio to CR7, my current team is now:
    Sanchez(Foster), Dias-McG-Ruguillon (White-Livra), Salah-Torres-Gallagher-Benrahma (Bissouma), Lukaku-CR7-Toney
    What do you think?
