It’s dull ache; a nagging undeniable sickness in the pit of the stomach that soon disperses on distraction, but makes its return every time my mind recalls this evening’s events at St James’ Park. All this couldn’t be more self-inflicted.

Those up early enough to take in this morning’s “Preamble” will be aware of the cause. Faced with fielding at least one Liverpool defender against Newcastle, I decided to “be clever” and field both Konchesky and Kyrkiakos on the premise that an out-of-form Newcastle would splutter against a Liverpool defence that, on current form, was the most miserly in the league.

I duly played both my Liverpool defenders and chose to bench Andy Carroll to back my hunch to the hilt. That was undoubtedly my worst decision of my Fantasy season. You surely don’t need me to go over the facts of tonight’s 3-1 result; please spare me from that…

While there was some logic behind it, I chose to ignore the fact that, before tonight’s game, Carroll had scored a goal or an assist in 8 of Newcastle’s last 9 games. On these very pages, in this very column a few days ago, I noted how Carroll had returned points and kept Newcastle afloat despite their dismal form. Somehow, for some reason, I chose to ferret these facts away in a cupboard in my head and drown out the screams with my “clever” new plan.

Such an error was overdue to be fair. I haven’t felt the sting of such an mistake this season so far and it’s a condition that most Fantasy Managers have to suffer once or twice in a campaign. The trick now is to lock it away, somehow rediscover the hunger and move on. I can hope for a miracle from the rest of my team, a freak bout of flu to bring Carroll off my bench, but the cold facts are that I’m staring at a big red arrow and my worst points tally of the season.

This all comes a week after I’d climbed to my best FPL ranking and closed the gap on rival Granville to 3 points. I don’t need bloody Alanis Morissette to point out the irony of it all. It’s no coincidence either.

The real problem is I can’t even put it down as a “lesson learned”; I’m pretty sure I’ve had this lesson ten times over the years, filed it under “common sense” and forgotten it.

Two things about this game we play are clear to me tonight. Firstly, it’s bloody hard to recall lessons learned and recall mistakes from the past – particularly the one that states “Never follow a good Gameweek by trying to be a smartarse”.

Secondly, and perhaps most poignant of all, Fantasy Football is a painful game when you’ve only got yourself to blame.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

RIGHT....So I'm a Man United fan. This news has taken the edge off a disgracefully sinister hangover (Did see Faithless @ the 02 last night)

However, I do question how any of this can actually become reality. So Tevez is quite clearly homesick and has the occasional touch line debate with his gaffer cos he doesnt wanna be substituted (not a far cry from most of us during a school game or sunday league game, I would imagine - nobody wants to be subbed)

    - Im thinking; Argentinean Football Players. World renowned in all positions. Argentinean Football Clubs. River Plate / Boca Juniors (Tevez parent club) Fairly reputable club worldwide. Highest earning player; I'd hazard a guess at 40k Sterling. Tevez wages @ Man City; hazarding more guesses at £170,000/week.

So....Are people seriously suggesting that Tevez is gonna take a MASSIVE pay cut just because he is home sick....SURELY NOT!

You have a point there but I think this game will be so dependent by the battle in midfield and I think at the moment Spurs have a better midfield than Chelsea. Gallas is looking better game by game and if we win that midfield battle maybe we can greatly limit their chances.

In order to win against Chelsea is vital not to concede and I think today we might start doing it.

But Chelsea have a better forward line, and Tottenham's full backs are Alan Hutton and Assou-Ekotto.

I can see Sp*rs winning, but there's a reason they don't keep clean sheets.

            @MFaulkner.

As far as Assou-Ekotto is concerned, he is the player I hate the most watching in my team. He makes mistakes and gives silly passes, many times he is out of position and then the center backs have to run all over to correct his mistakes. He is the kind of guy who can kill the morale of him team. Hutton is not so bad though.

Hmmm at the moment I am not so convinced that the pair of Anelka and Drogba is better than Crouch and Defoe. They used to be but with Drogba out of form and Anelka playing so behind the attack frontline and him not being that ultra fast is a problem for them. Anelka knows tons of football but is playing as a support forward which is a mistake if you ask me

                @Gargamel

What names have to do with it? Carroll and Ameobi are two names not catchy, not well known and to be honest I don't like the way Carroll plays (that is a personal of course). But as you can see they are productive and can cause problems to many defenses. So, it is not about names and reputation, but if you can score them goals!

                  Yeah I guess so.

I'll be honest though, I don't rate them the slightest and I think everything good about Spurs comes from other areas than their attack. Defoe can tap a few in against weakish sides but Crouch has played every game this season and only scored one goal in the Premiership.

They're nowhere near good enough to play for a team gunning for the top places of the league and cruising through the group stages of the Champions League. Although Crouch is an effective weapon in Europe, it should be noted.

The thing with Crouch is that he uses his height and body extremely well to protect the ball and distribute headers (assists) to other players and release much needed space for others to score. Also, many times he needs two defenders on him which gives a comparative advantage to other players in the attack.

Defoe is very tough to mark because of his positioning and pace. He starts from behind the pitch many times and used his speed to get good positions. Chelsea defenders are not so quick and possibly they will be having problems with him today.

          @Horlicks.

I totally disagree there. I respect your opinion but you have to admit that even when Spurs lose a game, this game has been good to watch and it is very difficult for a team like Spurs not to score. It is just a matter of how many we concede...

An age-old rule and not yet to be disproved by the new spurs - unlike City. On current form I can't call for Chelsea but it's a derby match. With Cole-Terry-Lampard I might be tempted to go for Chelsea but this time I think Spurs could just repeat last years victory

I just dont understand this? Liverpool lose 3-1 to a readjusted, newly promoted team, and people are STILL talking about getting their players.

People must be mad. Mazi Rodriguez scored all his goals for the season recently, gerrard is shot and torres is half the man he was.

AS for LIVERPOOL defenders...And MARK! the shame of it. Doubling up on a Shaft Liverpool defence away from home. Sorry to say it boss, but you deserve everything you get.

Krygiakos is PANTS. Skrtel isnt much better. Konchesky was and probably still should be a FULHAM player, different standard to what is required.

This game isnt about "grinding out" results. Why would you not have Jagielka instead of Krygiakos. Or Samba instead of Skrtel.

              Carrol over Torres.

              Ben Foster over Reina.

Charlie Adam over Gerrard. Why have players from a team that just arent very good.

                "Jag instead of Kyrgiakos"

Simple. Because THIS game doesn't care whether a clean sheet is ground out or not. It is worth 4pts. It doesn't care all that much about Krygiakos' abilities as a defender. It's because he provides a threat from set pieces.

Oh and Liverpool, despite their stuttering form, are still better than Blackpool, Birmingham and Newcastle.

Valid points. however, with Drogba currently out of form and Rooney out of form for months, Torres is a good option. Liverpool is 5-1-2 at home and Torres has averaged almost 8 points per game. And that is with Liverpool as a team playing very poorly. With Gerrard back and a lot of home games coming up, Torres has to be considered. No reason not to have a Carroll, Tevez, Torres front line for the next few games.

Tevez for Liverpool, I would try and get him into your team as quickly as possible. He has, and will continue to give central defenders a torrid time all season. He could have had two or three more assists yesterday and how he didn't get maximum bonus is baffling. Best value player in the game bar none. Pure fantasy gold.

Yeh I watched the game and I would have gone Carroll 3, Barton 2, Nolan 1

Carroll was fantastic, won almost every ball in the air and had such good control of the ball too.

He is fantasy gold this season, so glad I got him at his cheapest, hes never sat on my bench and never will

I think they have to give it - It was a hopeful flick on but didn't look like it was subsequently touched - and even if it was then the speed or direction of the ball wasn't significantly altered (as per the rules). I'm hopeful they'll give it - but I'm biased.

Never should've benched him, he's a bit like Darren Bent, but better, and cheaper. He scores against anyone and he is quite consistent (Bent was relatively consistent last season). I was lucky this week as All week I was thinking of bringing Kyrgiakos or Konchesky for a 4 point hit, but decided not to.

I should have shouted louder for people to play both. It's always a problem when you have Forward v Defender in a match and this week is likely to be one of the worst for this problem
      (eg Elmander/Davies v Samba/Jones/Nelsen, Carroll/Nolan v Konchesky/Kyrgiakos, Bale v Cole)

Usually you won't get too much from hedging bets and need to call one way or other. The dreaded 1-1 scoreline is as likely as not to leave you with 4pts from two players. But Newcastle-Liverpool was unlikely to end that way because of the new-manager syndrome. Given the unpopularity of Pardew, the game was likely to promise goals one way or other. If the crowd had the chance to get at Pardew then Liverpool could easily have a clean sheet and you get your points from your Liverpool defense.

The other side of the coin is that Newcastle put in a strong performance and you have the added bonus that Carroll is always involved in Newcastle goals. Cue history.

4pts for a 5-6m player is decent form.

I've called the same with Bolton Blackburn but less optimistic that a Blackburn clean-sheet is so well covered by having Elmander-Lee.

I should add that my own team picked itself with Kolarov, VdV and Odemwingie sitting out.

We all know that on his day, Torres is world class. Able to terrorise the sternest of defences.

The Liverpool midfield is desperately lacking in the creative department. At this rate they'll be lucky to finish in the top 7.

The World is but a football pitch where every man must play a position and Tevez should learn that wherever he goes there he will be and he can not get away from himself that is the problem with Tevez he will not be happy wherever he is. Anyone earning over £200k + a week, that is a week and can not find happiness then he will never be happy. He only has to play three more seasons and he can sit at home with his family for the rest of his existance in luxury but he will not be happy even then. Tevez is just unhappy and wherever he is there he will be unhappy. With or without money Tevez will be unhappy, with or without his family Tevez will be unhappy so he may as well earn as much as he can while he can still play football because when his contract is over in three seasons he not only can retire he may be to old to carry on anyway. Get a grip Tevez!

Maybe but the Arabs can let him sit on the bench for three years and not blink while in Rooney's case it was more expensive not to give him a long contract. Rooney's deal was to protect the asset for ManU so they can sell him for a huge amount if they want. Tevez is peanuts to the Arabs so the agents can not push the Arabs around so easy. If the Arabs allow Tevez to win then it makes them lose influence on the whole team and may make them all unmanageable. Its a similar yet different situation is Rooney and Tevez.

So why is his agent trying to renegotiate a new contract? I have no sympathy for city though (obviously) they created the monster.

Because his agent is a money grabbing scoundrel. Someone was saying on twitter that it's no surprise that Tevez never lasts more than 2/3 years at a club, because the fees paid to the agent and player are so high when making a transfer. It's the problem with third party ownership.

But he won't be negotiated that without Tevez's permission. I think he's seen Toure on 100k a week more than him and has thrown his toys out of the pram. City could be your most loathed team pretty soon as every player you try and buy in the jan or summer window they'll go for too and throw more money at, just to try and keep you down. It's what Chelsea did to Utd in 2002!

He is divorced and a multi-millionaire and he has tried to negotiate a new deal recently with City so his kids are an excuse for other issues. Anyone with that much money and who gets a holiday in Argentina whenever he wants can not be missing his kids that is just silly. He can have his kids over to the UK on a bi-monthly basis with the money he has and he can talk to them on video phone almost all day every day. The best thing he can do for his kids is behave like a man and honour his contract and earn the money he gets for his kids future and anything else is just making Tevez out do be an unhappy individual whatever the circumstances he will find himself in and that will not be good for his kids in the long run. Anyway Man City should let him buy himself out for £35 million it would be better all round. Bon voyage Tevez.

And the big question - why doesn't he just move his family to the uk for the rest of his contract???!?! It's about money and it's about mancini, the rest is a smoke screen and excuse imo.

I think it should be noted somewhere here that you can't just move a family unless they want to.

I firmly believe that Tevez is the bad guy in all of this, but if his kids like it in Argentina then he shouldn't "just move them"

Bleurgh. Obviously it's not that simple, but lot's of families move in relation to the fathers work. It's hardly a revolutionary idea. The conclusion of this will tell all though, if he stays it's about money. If he goes to Chelsea/Madrid/Barca it's about Mancini. If he leaves and goes back to argentina - fair enough it's family issues.

He can always do her in, any woman that kept me from my kids would be walking on thin ice and Tevez knows enough people in low places. He only has to cut the money supply to his x-wife and she would sell her soul anyway.

I also doubled up on Krygiakos and Konchesky andI had Torres as captain things could have been so different if when the match was at 1-1 Nando had scored, Konchesky hit a great long ball and Torres took it down about 7 or 8 yards out and you would have put you're house on him to score but Tim Krul saved and that was that, Krygiakos also should have scored when he got a free header six yards out from a Raul Meireles corner, I am one of the only people in my league without Andy Carroll and I am really screwed this week, I need Drogba,Nani,Gamst Pederson and Nasri to salvage this awful week out of all my players only Bardsley and Albrighton registered any sort of points with a clean sheet and an assist

"It's just something I fancied doing," Terry said. "I've probably just been a little bit bored at home recently with the injury.

"Didier's started playing the guitar and Flo plays the drums too. They keep talking about starting a band and they've chucked me in as lead singer, a bit of Mr Bojangles!

"Maybe I'll be on the piano as well but I've only just started, I've had a couple of lessons and we'll see how it goes."
