FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) scored for the fifth occasion in six Gameweeks on Saturday as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) produced a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) blank for the first time since his return to Manchester United.

Raphinha (£6.5m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.2m), Demarai Gray (£5.8m) and Diogo Jota (£7.7m) all delivered attacking returns on a good day for mid-price midfielders, while Michail Antonio (£7.9m) returned to scoring ways and Manchester City banked their fifth clean sheet in six league matches.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 6 fixtures.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injuries and lessons learned 1

Raphinha (£6.5m) recovered from a hip injury to feature and score in Leeds United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United but, after overcoming a blow to the head in the first half, was withdrawn midway through the second period – and pictured with ice on his legs on the hosts’ bench.

“He let us know that it was becoming difficult to stay on the pitch. Throughout the whole week, he was recovering from the knock he received against Newcastle. He played a great game as long as he could stay on the field.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Raphinha

Burnley goalscorer Maxwel Cornet (£6.0m) is one of three new injury worries for the Clarets.

“We lost J-Rod with a hamstring yesterday. Unfortunately, we lost Vyds to an injury. We’ve lost [Cornet] to an injury, [too]. It’s too early but I think it is his hamstring.” – Sean Dyche

Reece James (£5.6m) limped out of Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City with an ankle problem, the extent of which is still unknown.

“I don’t know about Reece [James] at the moment. He twisted his ankle and it was very painful for him. I have no other news on him at this stage but let’s see how he is in the next few days.” – Thomas Tuchel

Two other defenders in the same price rung, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m), came off with injuries in their defeat to Aston Villa.

“Sorry, I can’t give you any updates. We will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday or when we get the scans done and see how we are.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) was back on the bench for Liverpool for their clash with Brentford, who lost goalscoring centre-half Ethan Pinnock (£4.6m) to a hip problem in the first half.

Rodri (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.3m), Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m), Joe Willock (£5.9m) and Jack Harrison (£5.8m) were among the previously flagged players who returned to their respective clubs’ matchday squads on Saturday.

THE THINGS WE LEARNED

FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 2
NEVER BACK AGAINST CITY’S DEFENCE

It’s five clean sheets on the spin for Manchester City, who didn’t look like conceding at all against Chelsea: the Blues have the lowest expected goals (xG) total of any side in Gameweek 6 so far.

Many of us will be considering City defenders from Gameweek 8 onwards but who would back against them shutting Liverpool out next weekend? Pep Guardiola’s side have conceded only two ‘big chances’ all season and just five shots on target – that’s eight fewer than any other side.

Following his assist at Stamford Bridge, Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) is now top among FPL defenders for points this season.

WHO IS ON PENALTIES AT UNITED?

Bruno Fernandes (£11.9m) skied a stoppage-time penalty as Ronaldo watched on in Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Naturally, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was plagued with questions on spot-kicks in his post-match press conference and didn’t give us a completely clear-cut answer on who will take them in future.

“The decision [on who will take penalties] is made before the game, yeah.

“Bruno has been excellent, he’s such a good penalty taker and today, you’d back him with your mortgage. He’ll step forward every day of the week, for the club and the team, sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.

“This is going to be the headline isn’t it? Bruno has been excellent and Cristiano is probably the one who has scored the most penalties in world football. So we’ve got great takers here.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS REMAIN EN VOGUE

Salah is well clear at the top of the FPL midfielders’ table but the chasing pack are dominated by sub-£8.0m options.

And a look at FPL’s ‘form’ table (points divided by a club’s games played over the last 30 days) shows just why the likes of Sarr and Gray are so in demand.

The trio of Everton players featured above are all now among the top ten highest-scoring midfielders of the season.

Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) have both returned in four of their six starts, while Andros Townsend (£5.4m) appears to be on penalty-taking duties in the absence of Everton’s two strikers – the winger scored from the spot in the Toffees’ 2-0 win over Norwich City.

FIVE DEFENCES TO TARGET

Five teams remain without a clean sheet this season and they all showed on Saturday why they are sides to target from an FPL perspective, conceding in their respective Gameweek 6 fixtures and allowing plenty of chances along the way.

Norwich, Watford, Newcastle, Leeds and Burnley are the clubs in question and all of those teams are in the bottom six for ‘big chances conceded’ in 2021/22.

All bar Newcastle of that quintet conceded between 1.99 and 2.17 expected goals (xG) on Saturday.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 6

Another week and another table-topping appearance from Antonio, whose expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 1.63 was the highest in Gameweek 6 so far. The West Ham also couldn’t be bettered for shots in the box (six).

Antonio (5.41) is only narrowly behind Salah (5.43) for xGI over the course of the season, despite playing one game fewer.

The fall of Fernandes in FPL circles has been remarkable but he is not a complete busted flush, especially if – and that’s a big if – he remains on penalties. He created a remarkable 10 chances on Saturday, twice as many as any other player, and more than any other player in a single game in the last 20 months.

Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.7m), who has now delivered attacking returns in five of his six appearances this season, took his tally to 16 key passes with another five at Watford. He is now top among FPL forwards for chances created.

Jamie Vardy (£10.4m) certainly seems to be benefitting from playing as a sole striker and not sharing the limelight with Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.1m). He racked up more penalty box touches (14) than anyone else in Gameweek 6 and is second for that stat among forwards in the season as whole, as well as shots in the box.

Vardy is now level with Salah and Antonio for goals scored (five) in 2021/22.

Time to sell ManU players? Think Son could be good again...

    a. Shaw + Fernandes -> Cancelo + Son
    b. Sell Jota instead

    Sánchez
    Shaw, Alonso, TAA
    Jota, Salah, Fernandes, Sarr
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

    Steele, Duffy, Gilmour, Amartey

It's hard to say, they've only scored 3 goals so far. I'm happy to avoid having to face villa, west ham and man united before getting him since he's not cheap as well.

Son is rarely a bad pick though is he, as long as he is fit and not horrednous fixtures. People with only two premiums look at Son, and think, well Son is basically a premium so I can justify my double premnium team by getting Son as my "third premium".
Vardy is in the same boat, Auba could be, but well its Auba

    Hit the WC button:

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Trent Rudiger Christensen
    Salah Raphina Sarr Benrahma
    Ronaldo Antonio

    Foster Armstrong Livramento Sissoko

Plan is to play 433 when Saints fixtures turn and rotate the mids. Will probably try to get Lukaku in for Ronaldo in a few weeks.

    Any advice appreciated

Activated wildcard after a few slurps last night…harder than I thought:

    Sanchez
    TAA, Rudiger, Cancelo, (White, Livra)
    Grealish, Salah, Sarr, Raph,(Sissoko)
    Lukaku, Antonio, St Max

Not interested in defensive double-ups as it’s too much stress. Upgrade St Max and downgrade Grealish?

Jota is also an international duty risk. Firmino is fit again and was NOT called up for Brazil. He'll have 2 weeks to prepare for the Watford game and I think he will likely start that one.

In which case you'd be dragging Jota along for 2 weeks for no reason.

Makes sense to me. As an owner of many mid 7.5 and their rotation and Greenwood's Ronaldo impact, I think that sort of decisions is good, although if you have Ronaldo, then Lukaku does free up unds GW8-9

My thoughts exactly mate!!! Greenwood has been nullified by Ronaldos effect, and Jota has Firmino back now and City next, could be a sensible time to hop off them both!! Definitely want Raphinha that’s for sure!!

Does anyone else use the ICT index as a measure for transfers? This is my first transfer using it and I've found it's extremely effective, I remember reading an article that says amongst midfielders and forwards there is a correlation of 90+% between points and ICT index. Defenders it's a little less as it's harder to predict points with defenders.

Nope. I prefer xG and xGI per 90 stats.

Ronaldo and Lukaku are not high on the index purely because they've played less. Game time factors too heavily in the calculations.

I agree. Those two are the main parameters, but we have to remember expected or historical xG (+xA) delta also. A Traore and J Vardy are good example imo.

Adama Traore is not an xG outlier. At least not from 3 past seasons of data.

I just think Lukaku has more upside than a defensive transfer this week. You can play Semedo at home to Newcastle and deal with James the week after.

For what it's worth I also own James and I'm planning to do Ronaldo to Lukaku. If I didn't have a good bench option for James then I'd prioritise him but in my case White against Brighton seems fine and for you Semedo against Newcastle is probably even better.

Fairly similar to me except I'm on a 3-4-3.

My original plan was Ronnie > Lukaku, but am now just going to have to wait on news from Tuchel on R. James.
If he's out, which is fairly likely, then it will be James > Rudiger for me and probably leave Ronnie for one more week

Just mucking about with GW8 WC, but there are alot of opportunities.

    Guaita/Ramsdale (Foster)
    TAA, Dias/Alonso, Rudiger, Cancelo, Livramento
    Gallagher, Raphinha, Salah, Benrahma, Luiz
    Antonio, Lukaku, Bamford/DCL.

If a good 6.5 Forward or under becomes available Edouard, Toney, Armstrong et all it is an easy swap and takes out the ITB (except Raphinha) problems and could upgrade a midfielder to 8m i.e Grealish

Going Man Utd less has huge upsides. A good bench means less hits. 🙂

Easy to get back Ronaldo GW14 if you want to as defence maybe where the rises will happen

        7.6,6.1,6.1,5.6,4.1 defenders
        12.6,5.6,6.5, 6.0 4.5 midis
        11.7,7.5 ,8 attackers

Think the time for Alonso was possibly GW1-5 tbh

Chilwell won’t stay on the bench forever, and even though Marcos is a grade A+ FPL asset when he plays, he at heart is still a pretty bad defender

Similarly I wouldn’t be selling a Jota - he should be 9.0 minimum, and it’s one of those bizarre situations where if he was more expensive, people would be sticking with him

Bamford could be back imminently too with a beautiful fixture run, a desire to make up for lost time, and penalties

Doubt people would be keeping Jota if he was more expensive. Minutes far too much of an issue for that with Firmino back.

Still would get alonso with good bench, i like defenders that don't rely on CSs but also are entertaining to watch TAA and Alonso look dangerous the whole game.. But you are def about chilwell.

For leeds, i would definitely have Raphinha for his magic so it's double up or only Raphinha.. Leaning towards only Raphinha atm.

      5. Camzy

Fair on Alonso. I could just go Rudiger and be boring and tbh I probably should because I have a thin defensive bench with Ayling injured and Livramento vs Che.

I think Jota is an unfortunate makeweight to get Lukaku. Only place I can make money from in midfield and both of those moves are to fund Lukaku so are necessary to be done together.

It's the only way I can figure out how to turn Bamford > Lukaku short of selling Salah.

I think my whole plan will change if Bamford is fit.

I will likely just do Lukaku + Rudiger in for Ronaldo + Ayling. Will wait for injury news.

      B) for me.

Don't see the great rush to sell Jota. Firmino may start the next game because of his high pressing ability - but I wouldn't expect Jota to get much (if anything) even if plays.
Then I reckon Jota'll be back in after the City game. So he's a keep for me for the time being.

I've just seen this clip of Emi Martinez during the last minute penalty in their game with Man Utd. It was a first class display of shithousery, first he tells Ronaldo to take the penalty, then does a little jig to the Utd. fans after Bruno blazes the ball over the bar.

I know that Bielsa is revered by many people-including Pep Guardiola - as this footballing god amongst men but that image just doesn't square with how Leeds looked on the pitch in the final 10 minutes of that game yesterday. It was shambolic, no shape anywhere to be seen. you cant just rely on maverick attackers to cover up the cracks. Bielsa seems really stubborn to me, completely in thrall to his principles but the warning signs where there last season. Scored and many as they let in. How much is actually done on defending as a unit in training? it looks like they are set up to concede at least two a game now. if injuries mount and some of those attackers have long term injuries then they could be in real trouble.

I'm not keen on going 4 at the back, but perhaps that's why I'm not that far off being ranked 1 million.

If I were on WC, I'd go for a strong 3 (TAA-Chelsea DF- Cancelo) and the rest would be 4.0 ish. Then I'd upgrade either ASM or Luiz and play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 (the former for me).

But I like the wc team anyway apart from that minor thing.
