Sell Ronaldo for Lukaku in Gameweek 7? What FPL managers are thinking

A favourable fixture swing for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) going into Gameweek 7 has seen the Belgian attract around 175,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at the time of writing.

The Blues rise to the top of our Season Ticker for the medium term, with their next five league matches, in particular, standing out:

For those FPL bosses keen on Lukaku, how to acquire him is the next dilemma.

A ‘three premium’ set-up means that Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) wouldn’t have to be sold to accommodate the Belgian, although that would require considerable sacrifices elsewhere.

For those with space for only two heavy hitters, then it might be a case of ditching the top-scoring Fantasy asset, Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), and reallocating funds up top, or, more likely, offloading Ronaldo in a like-for-like swap.

The veteran Portuguese is the second most-sold forward of Gameweek 7 so far, with just over 100,000 transfers out at the time of writing.

We delve into the responses from both our on-site poll and Hot Topic to see what the Fantasy Football Scout community is thinking.

As said above he didn't do too bad last time against Liverpool and they just conceded 3 in their last game and it could have been more. Everton are hardly solid at the back and Southampton are a bit of a mixed bag. Even after that I think they could trouble Arsenal and ManUtd can't keep clean sheets so I don't think keeping him is the worst choice if you have him

Depends how you look at it.

Leeds, Everton, Southampton all in his next 4 - he could get something out off. He banged vs Liverpool last year too and they do look ropey in defence.

The window you would want to drop him for is; Arsenal, United, Leicester, City, Chelsea.

I wonder if Bielsa will be tempted to play him as a 10 soon, both his goal and his shot that hit the post both came from that area and he could be lethal if played there regularly instead of those games where he has to spend so long hugging the touchline

Luiz -> Brownhill to free up 0.1
Could then maybe get Dias in for Laporte.
Not the biggest fan of Grealish but can see the appeal.
      Like the Toney pick.
Would also just get Lukaku now to allow Trent over Alonso, but again can see the appeal with what you've gone for.

        Luiz v browhill. Great shout.
The alonso to Trent or Laporte to Dias I’ll definitely look into.

Mainly keeping ronaldo as I’m going to the game on Saturday and it’s feel wrong not to captain him. Lukaku likely in the week after.

2 FTs to deadend my team this week. I want to WC in 8 without any City or Chelsea and no easy route. Thoughts on my plan?

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw Coufal Ayling Livramento
    Salah Jota Raphinha Benrahma Sissoko
    Ronaldo Antonio Bamford

TAA, Jota, Bamford > Lukaku, Alonso, ESR/Klich -4

Taking a -4 right before a WC is a bit iffy but I think it could be worth. I also get to keep Ronaldo for one more week where a lot are ditching for Lukaku.

    1. Respect My Authoritah
      • 10 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

I've considered the same but I really don't think that -4 will pay off.

Shaw being injured may force your hand anyway.

Jota to Sarr looks an obvious one week move imo.

      Bamford to Jiminez maybe?

If Shaw and Bamford are unfit I'll do:

Bamford > Jimenez and Shaw > Alonso

But I quite like the Lukaku option because I think he's the best captain this week and would give him the armband.

I'm losing TAA and still will have Benrahma, Ayling, Sanchez and Shaw in the team.

I also have 0 City players and no route to them without more hits for GW8. I'm just behind if I don't WC next week imo. Not enough money ITB to do Shaw > Cancelo next week.

      Bold but definitely viable.

Might go Klich over ESR. Think Watford are a poor side with a very iffy defence that is disguised by the nature of the teams they've faced so far. Getting overrun by Leeds quite possible.

Ronaldo is not worth 12.7m in a Unitrd team that provides few big chances for the No9s.

United have a poor coaching set up at the club and cannot produce consistent patterns of attacking football.

It's Ronaldo argument didn't work against Villa, he was starved of service.

Once DCL, Bamford, Ings start firing after the IB I expect Premium teams will struggle.

    1. Gabbiadini

It is certainly not that simplistic.

It’s a fair point but you could make equal points about the lack of service lukaku might get with duds havertz and Werner serving him

        Good point this

Looking back to last season it's defo arguable that United attack was more consistently creative than Chelsea. News season of course.

I'm also pretty certain that it was just a week ago that Ronaldo was being lauded for having an insane number of chances. At some stage we'll a proper idea of what he is likely to produce. Presumably it'll be somewhere between week 5 and week 6 🙂

Think I'll be giving him one more shot vs Everton then will see what's what.

Agreed. I do agree that he often won't get the service he needs at ManUtd but he'll still carve out opportunities for himself and still score goals. But I do think I might just be tempted after Everton to see what I could do with the money elsewhere instead and if I feel it's worth it

    Another question

    I'm weighing up these options

Currently have 1 FT & 1.5m to spend

    Option A
Townsend (5.4) out - ESR (5.3) in - leaving 1.6m in bank with the idea being it makes future transfers easier and perhaps not needing to make 2 transfers to free funds etc

    Option B
Mendy (4.4) out - ESR (5.3) in, leave Townsend benched for a couple of weeks

Money on the bench or in the bank is the question really

Currently 477 overall points and 335 overall rank

You won't go too far wrong having options of Townsend / ESR etc on the bench. Their value is low enough for it to be ok.

I was considering putting Lukaku on the bench for last week and some would love to bench TAA this week so the whole idea of having too much money on the bench is a load of rubbish, your transfers are there for 3-4 GWs generally.

For example, I'm considering Gilmour > ESR. It means that Gray might be benched or maybe even TAA.

I'd do Shaw to Alonso / Rudi as a must.
If you're WC over the intl break I'd consider a punt on Jimi (vs New) for Toney

    Thoughts on this WC team

    Ramsdale
    Rudiger | Alonso | Marcal
    Salah | Benrhama | Sarr | Smith-Rowe
    Ronnie | Lukaka | Antonio

Foster | Duffy | Tsmikas | Douglas Luiz

why Tsimikas? Get Livramento instead. Your bench is ufff but I guess with 3 premiums thats the sacrifice

For a Ronnie/Lukaku team it looks decent, just feels like you have to sacrifice a lot to get them both in e.g. TAA / City Def / budget mid

Mahrez is stinking up my draft team.

Got some good options like Gallagher, Townsend & ESR available in the free agents section.

Should I get rid of him?

      Mbeumo available too.

The thought of Mahrez on the bench dropping air biscuits leads me to suggest ditching him immediately.

On WC, how would you fill 3 remaining spots (currently have Benrahma and Doucoure in team for value)?

    a) Saka 4.5 Jimenez, leaves 0.6 spare
    b) ESR 4.5 Jesus, leaves 0.4 spare
    c) Saka Benrahma Toney (benching headaches)

    Ramsdale | Foster
    TAA | Alonso | Rudiger | Cancelo | Livramento
    Salah | Raphinha | Sarr | * *
    Lukaku | Antonio | *

Looks gtg but taking a hit before 7 of your players play in Europe is just asking for trouble.

Barnes to Raphinha was a rage transfer on Saturday.

And Digne to Rudiger was because of price chase.

And if things go horribly wrong, I'll just have to use the WC, I guess.

    My team now:

    Guaita
    Taa Christensen Tierney Marcal
    Salah Greenwood Jota Grey
    Ronaldo Antonio

    Steer Dennis Omo Gilmour

    1 ft
    2.0 idb

    Plan is Jota+Marcal to Raphina(if fit)+Alonso (-4).
    Ronaldo for C for now.

Captain decision between Antonio or CR7.

    Is it GTG?
