Quarter Finals – Day Two – Dugout Discussion

The second quarter-final of EURO 2012 is less than an hour away, with Germany and Greece doing battle for the right to clinch a place in the last four alongside Portugal. As always, we’ve rolled out the Dugout Discussion ahead of this evening’s 7.45pm kick-off.

The team news is now in and, for many Fantasy managers, it looks like it’s going to be a frustrating night…

Joachim Low makes four changes to the side that saw off Denmark in Germany’s final group game. Jerome Boateng returns at right-back after serving a one-match suspension, with Lars Bender dropping back to the bench. Up front, however, today’s earlier rumours have proven to be true – Marco Reus, Andreas Schurrle and Miroslav Klose are all handed roles in the first XI, with Thomas Muller, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez dropping to the bench.

Fernando Santos makes a couple of alterations to the Greece side that stunned Russia last time out. Skipper Giorgos Karagounis is suspended and is replaced in midfield by Grigorios Makos, while up front Theofanis Gekas makes way for Sotiris Ninis.

Germany Starting XI: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Reus, Ozil, Schurrle – Klose

Greece Starting XI: Sifakis; Torosidis, Papasthopoulos, Papadopoulos, Tzavellas; Makos, Katsouranis, Maniatis; Ninis, Samaras, Salpingidis

      I think to the contrary.

      They're playing their full defense and mids, so if anything, it's a tactical change to deal with the challenge the Greeks will present.

      Think you're misinterpreting Löw's intentions here - there's no disrespect being shown at all.

      Müller and Podolski have looked jaded after a long season and needed the rest, whereas Klose is much more able than Gomez to unpick a static defence, as he is used to running wide to pull the centre-backs out of position. Schürrle has looked livelier than Podolski pre-tournament and Reus has deserved his chance too.

      Taken individually, I'd argue that any of these three decisions would be valid, given the tactical approach of the Greek opponents. Taken collectively, however, well, let's see.

        I agree with the tactics behind it with regards to being more mobile and able to breakdown a 10 man wall in front of goal but changing your team when you are the better team, football shouldn't be played like that, ruining the game the way are going to play tonight...

    I don’t think it’s worth it to change ur captain from Ronaldo to Schweinsteiger. You will only gain 1 pt if he scored and 2 pts if he scored and got a CS or 1 RB.

      Depends whether you are confident with your game 3/4 options. If so, you may as well punt on a german defender who might pop up with a goal from a set piece.

      I'd say there's slightly less risk with a defender in this game...think I'm going for Schweinsteiger though. I feel lucky 😉

        I have same 2 and going ozil but soooo tempted by a punt on boateng! Just got a feeling for oxil, was going to shift to him anyway over Gomez so that decisions been made easier.

    Am I able to make a wildcard transfer now mid-way through the quarter finals and swap Gomez for Klose? If someone can tell me how to do this, that would be great. I'm on the confirm transfers page and I thought there would be a button for wildcard but no, nothing.

    A word about Hummels as captaincy.

    His goal average for Dortmund is 1 in 8.6 games

    Pirlo for Italy is 1 in 8.5

    Obviously Pirlo has a higher assist potential but throw in possible RB and CS and he seems a more than worthy choice.
