What can we expect from Hwang Hee-chan in FPL after his Gameweek 7 haul?

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 2-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Hwang Hee-chan (£5.6m) x2 | Jeff Hendrick (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) x2 | Javier Manquillo (£4.0m)
  • Bonus: Hwang x3, Jimenez x2, Marcal (£4.6m) x1

IS HWANG HEE-CHAN THE REAL DEAL?

Hwang Hee-chan (£5.5m) is proving popular among FPL managers and is the most-bought forward of Gameweek 8 following his double-digit haul against Newcastle.

Many of us will be unfamiliar with the South Korean striker, who has spent much of his time playing centrally in Austria and Germany but who has occupied a left-wing berth for Wolves so far.

A historic minutes-per-goal average of 179 is very decent (that’s similar to what Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) boasted in the Premier League last season) but, of course, many of his strikes were scored for RB Salzburg in a league of inferior quality.

His record in Germany was poor: two goals in 20 appearances in the second tier was followed by a goalless year in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, although 17 of his 20 top-flight run-outs were from the bench.

A serious Covid infection blighted his time with Leipzig, while his skillset wasn’t ideally suited to his then-coach Julien Nagelsmann’s set-up, as The Athletic report:

“With Hwang being quite a specialised player – ie,  a wide-ish attacker who likes space to exploit, he didn’t really fit in as a winger or a striker in what was often a 4-2-3-1 formation or a 3-4-2-1. The lone striker role didn’t suit him as he preferred having that space around him, so they couldn’t quite make it work, and Nagelsmann was believed to have felt Hwang wasn’t quite playing to his instructions.

“With the 25-year-old being fairly quiet, a little shy and perhaps even sensitive, the struggles had knocked his confidence and it was decided he needed to get out and play somewhere else, with Wolves being an ideal fit formation-wise.

“Indeed, in terms of style (a pacy, willing and direct runner with an excellent work ethic and an eye for goal), Hwang is as close as Wolves have had to anyone resembling Diogo Jota, whose presence as a roaming second striker has been missed, since his departure to Liverpool last summer.”

WhoScored’s shot data takes the Austrian league out of the equation and instead focuses more elite competition: Hwang has a goal conversion rate of just under 14% across his appearances in German football, the Europa League and the Champions League.

That’s a more realistic figure for a budget FPL forward, who has currently converted an unsustainable 60% of his shots into goals this season.

Bruno Lage praised the link-up play between Hwang and Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) ahead of Saturday’s win over Newcastle and the pair duly combined for both of Wolves’ goals.

Even though the 60% goal conversion rate is not going to last, Wolves having a more confident finisher up top is a welcome change from the profligacy we’ve seen so far in 2021/22 and a potential boon to Jimenez, who has created more chances than any other FPL forward this season.

The pair could be what one another needs, and the Jota/Jimenez comparisons have already started.

“Myself and Raul had good conversations to build the chemistry but this is what the manager wants between the attackers and the midfielders. He tells me to move between the sides and the centre with Raul so he can make creative passes. This is all in the tactics.” – Hwang Hee-chan

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Is Hwang Hee-chan

Just to dampen the enthusiasm about Wolves, it certainly wasn’t a vintage attacking display by Bruno Lage’s side, who had fewer shots than all top-flight teams bar Watford, Liverpool and Southampton in Gameweek 7 and who played better in defeat in Gameweeks 1-3.

Adama Traore‘s (£6.0m) stock continues to plummet after a second successive benching, while owners of Marcal (£4.6m) were treated to an unexpected bonus point but another unconvincing display in possession won’t have eased fears over future rotation.

As for Newcastle, they now have the worst defensive record in the top flight, level with Norwich for goals conceded but without a clean sheet to their name.

Steve Bruce changing formation during games and between them smacks of desperation, and the sight of Isaac Hayden (£4.5m) moving from attacking midfielder to right-sided centre-back midway through the first half was a head-scratcher.

The Magpies still pose an attacking threat: they have only failed to score in one match this season and are ranked eighth for goal attempts.

But the defensive woes will be of great interest to owners of the in-form Son Heung-min (£10.0m) ahead of Gameweek 8.

Wolves XI: Sa, Semedo, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Marcal, Neves, Moutinho, Trincao (Dendoncker 85), Hwang (Traore 90), Jimenez.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Manquillo (Murphy 70), Fernandez, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Longstaff, Willock (Hendrick 35), Almiron (Gayle 79), Joelinton, Saint-Maximin.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-0 Arsenal

  • Bonus: Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) x3, Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) x2, Ben White (£4.4m) x1

The first-half blitz in the north London derby may have masked lingering doubts about Arsenal’s attack, as it’s now just two goals in three matches for the Gunners against Burnley, Norwich City and Brighton.

Luckily, all is well at the other end of the pitch.

Mikel Arteta’s side made it three clean sheets in four at the Amex, withstanding some heavy Albion pressure to secure a draw.

The north London side continue to give away headed chances, especially from set plays, with Shane Duffy (£4.3m), Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) and Dan Burn (£4.4m) all having opportunities to break the deadlock on the south coast.

Above: Premier League clubs sorted by headed chances conceded in the last four Gameweeks

But Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m), Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£5.0m) in particular look a lot more secure in open play than the pre-September Arsenal backline, with Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.6m) a promising acquisition despite a difficult night in soggy Sussex.

“[I’m impressed] because they’ve never played together and because they have struggled a little bit with the language and they didn’t have any time to work together in pre-season either. They’re getting a really good connection, good chemistry, and I think their qualities match and complement each other really, really well. I think both of them today were terrific.” – Mikel Arteta on Ben White and Gabriel

Albion’s defence, who let’s not forget didn’t have the injured and influential Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) in front of it, was even better in Gameweek 7, with a breakaway Emile Smith Rowe (£5.3m) shot the only real moment of alarm.

Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) has only one save point all season, a sign of how watertight that Albion backline is.

A lot of the talk in the FPL community is over double-ups on City and Chelsea defenders but Brighton and (a full-strength) Arsenal are two of the best rearguards outside of these two clubs and there are some real bargains to be had from each team.

Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) is available at an awkward price point and will be overlooked by many of us but he turned in a man-of-the-match showing in the evening kick-off at the Amex and, as is not always the case, the maximum bonus was dished out to the best player on the park.

No player created more chances than the Brighton wing-back in Gameweek 7 and, since his debut in Gameweek 4, only three FPL defenders have registered more final-third touches.

“His contribution has been brilliant on and off the pitch. He has settled in really well, the way he plays the game is so refreshing. He brings energy to the team, but I thought the whole team performance was amazing, and I don’t want to single anyone out as the team were fantastic.” – Graham Potter on Marc Cucurella

Brigthon and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Duffy, Dunk, Burn, Cucurella, Moder (Mac Allister 77), Lallana, Gross (March 84), Trossard, Maupay.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Lokonga, Saka (Maitland-Niles 90), Odegaard (Pepe 63), Smith Rowe, Aubameyang, (Lacazette 71).

      Depends on your temperament

I like the defenders at this price point, but you need to be able to stay the course after benchings (James) or lack of CS's. Some prefer the nailed on attacker. All decent options

I've always been a fan of big-at-the-back, often to my detriment and I'm a bit surprised to see it back in vogue this season, despite the solidarity of Chelsea's and Man City's backline.

When was the last time we had more than 1 solid option who began the season at 4.0?

Livramento and Duffy are perhaps the best value in the game, and I'd much rather have either one coming off the bench than a rarely-featuring 4.5 striker or a 4.5 two-point machine midfielder.

I would even argue that you could start Duffy/Livra most weeks, and be able to afford a 3 premium (Salah, Lukaku, Son) team.

Is anyone else in a similar dilemma on WC?

If I were on a WC, I think my defence would be:

      Mendy or Ederson
      Duffy / Livra / Cancelo / Rudy / TAA

Can't go wrong with a Chelsea, Man City, TAA trifecta, unless of course you pick the "wrong" Chelsea defender. I'd consider Mendy if it weren't for Ramsdale at 4.6

Yeah this is the safe defense to go for. And I'm likely to do it. I think Ramsdale is fairly safe 4.5m as well. This should steady the ship for a good while.

I think the point’s a good one. I don’t expect this to be a popular opinion but I think Duffy gets dropped when Brighton have everyone fit. They’ve been without Lamptey, Webster and Burn for varying parts of the season so far - he’s great from a Fantasy point of view but I wouldn’t like having to play him as an actual PL manager.

Doesn’t detract from your point though as there are still some other really decent budget options at the back.

You may be right as I've heard similar. Might be the case of he loses his place but then gets back in. Will only make him hungrier for goals. He'd still be an easy bench as well at 4.3, cheaper than any 4.5 striker spot.

    3. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years

No, I'm not a fan of letting the available bench options determine what I decide for my XI. I know I haven't been getting jammy auto-sub points, but the flip side is that I haven't had a Torres or Alonso or Traore fire to put out. I have played too much roulette in the past and I'm not letting it hurt me so much this year.

I don't personally want a 3-premium team either. Salah and Lukaku are fine to cover captaincy, and then I can move Lukaku on when I want a different captain.

People are now worried about making their WC's too much like Andy's team, for example. But you can tell that Andy is a 3-4-3 guy through and through, so he already doesn't like the 4 atb, already talking about not getting Trent back and spending that money elsewhere, or even playing Mbeumo over one of his Chelsea defenders in GW8. He'll move off it soon enough, and his clones will follow.

This is a good question I think.

Instinctively I say Mbuemo as there are more mid slots. But I think we’ve seen the potential of him so far so Hwang seems to have more upside.

I’d be happy with both at 6th/7th attackers - free up some money for Son and a second 12+ player maybe.

Also TAA should make a return, and Antonio!

Eurgh, I feel it’s a mess all of a sudden and slipped down to 774k! Yikes.

I do actually feel like doing something radical like:
    Tierney + Alonso + Allan + Sarr + Ronaldo > TAA + Cancelo + ESR + Son + Antonio

    Cancelo - TAA - Rudiger
    ESR - Raphinha - Salah - Son - Benrahma
    Lukaku - Antonio

nah your team doesn't need that kind of overhaul...Alonso your only issue really, I think Sarr will tick along ok for the price. Tierney, Rudiger, Raphina, Salah and the big two up top...team is very good imo

cheers Jia, think it may just be more panic then than anything, Alonso i had only just brought in as well as part of a -8 last GW, eeeek! can be easily resolved though.

I think the majority of who you are looking to trade out aren't critical. Sarr Ronaldo Tierney can all stay if needed (I'm looking to move Sarr after Liverpool in case he drops 19 pts again!).

Upgrade Allan or Scarlett with the cash so you can play a true 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 (Allan should not be a starter). Alonso is also a trade if he is benched again.

Cheers pal! yeah i agree, i was gonan use the 3m though for maybe TAA? But he can be brought back with CR7 sale anyhow i guess, how would you make it more a true'er 352?

Definitely keep cash in plan for bringing back Trent, was thinking upgrading Allan to 5.5-6.0 bracket for 5 playing mids or Scarlett to 5.5-6.5 bracket for 3 forwards. Does mean you will need another downgrade to get Trent back in (for Alonso seems to be the pick). Maybe a hit over the next few weeks would get you there? Williams to Cancelo, then Benrahma to a 5.5-6.0 mid (or another trade to make cash) to go from Alonso to Trent?

Yep some sound points there man, the cash would most definitely come from an alonso downgrade if i were to turn allan and scarlett into players that offer playing time.

For me I’d do Alonso & Sarr/Benrahma to Son & whoever you can afford in defense.

Then next up is using Ron to fund a premium defender. (So you could add in moving him for a -8).
      Ron+Alonso+Sarr > Cancelo/TAA+Son+???

      I don’t mind a -8 to reshuffle a bit.
As long as you feel good about it.

some good advice there RJ I hugely appreciate it, Doing Ron+Alonso+Sarr > Cancelo/TAA+Son+??? would leave me 11.4 for a striker haha, yeah a -8 to shuffle things up i'd be pleased with tbh.

of course there's regrets, always is post wildcard (gw5)
not much movement for me but hoping for some change of luck

      Went James then got injured
Went Torres then fixed that to Sarr straight away
Went Guiata (will just keep for now)
Went Semedo (fixtures were there but avg returns)

Swings and roundabouts. Can't say I regret using it in GW3. It gave me a terrific boost, lifting me into the Top 500 at the time. But then these injuries kicked in and I've taken hits. I have a clear roadmap to get me to the squad I'd have if I wildcarded now, but it will take a few weeks of 1FT to get there, allowing people who wildcard in the next week or two to catch me up.

WCd in GW5. I think its set me up pretty well and has definitely boosted my rank (Up from 140k to 23k from GW5 - GW7)

The good was Jimi, Raph, Rudiger

The bad was Torres, Bamford, Lukaku

Marcal + Semedo double up hasnt gone to plan but Im still happy to keep one of them as they have still impressed me

Team looks solid, only 2/3 moves away from my ideal team so got to be happy with that considering the rank boost I got

I know you guys probably already know this, I’m just talking out loud but looking at price changes too much can really stuff up your decision making. For example i had Townsend from GW 1-3 and if I wasn’t worried about his price drop back then I would’ve persisted with him. Really stuffed up with that. And now I’m too stubborn to get him back lol

I am on WC and buying some players that rise (within reason) that I will not hold on to, so am playing the game, but I expect to sell them with just .1 and no profit.

It’s good to catch the likes of Ramsdale, Rudiger, Hwang & Cancelo though, also maybe Douglas Luiz … because I will keep those players

Selling Ron at 12.7 for .1 profit before his double drop and buying back at 12.5 would be great 😉

I don't think there'll be much movement. Most transfers will be on wildcards. You'll prob get your 0.1 for CR7, but not more than that, I'd say. And even then, if United continue being so inept, you'll regret that!
