FFS International

The FPL players we’ll be scouting over the international break

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, this international break gives us some respite to take stock of our teams and/or to hit the Wildcard button.

In both cases, it is a great opportunity to scout potential new signings.

We asked our FFS International contributors who they are monitoring during this international window.

Jimenez ends goal drought as Arsenal claim convincing north London derby win 10

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) has finally put to bed the ghosts of last season’s injury, with returns in each of the last two Gameweeks. While we may have missed some incredible fixtures, there are still some good ones on the horizon. Jimenez’s first Mexico call-up since that head injury will send him halfway across the world and into the cauldron of three Concacaf World Cup qualifiers, meaning he should be watched carefully by FPL managers over the international break.

Given Chelsea’s upcoming fixture run, if we can be assured of who will be starting at left wing-back, then there are significant points to be had. All eyes will therefore be on Marcos Alonso’s (£6.0m) recall to the Spanish national team and Ben Chilwell’s (£5.6m) late call-up to the England squad. If either should fail to return at full fitness, then the other will surely come into our consideration. If either of them really shines on international duty, it might just tip the Chelsea scales in their favour.

FPL Talking Points
Spot the Differential – Gameweek 2

We will be monitoring minutes of Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) during the international break as the Belgian is about to come back into the premium discussion. In the last couple of Gameweeks, his involvment in playmaking has been exceptional but has been lacking in goal attempts. The international windown will be another gauge of whether he is about to revert to the FPL points machine that we love or whether we have to wait longer to see this again.

We will also be monitoring Kelechi Iheanacho‘s (£7.0m) two games with Nigeria. It’s hard to understand why Brendan Rodgers has not capitalised on Ihenacho’s red-hot form from last season at the start of this new campaign but something has got to change for the Foxes as eight points in seven games is far from their usual standards. Iheanacho grabbed the opportunity given to him with a goal at Selhust Park in Gameweek 7 and his time might have come back again.

FPL Froggies
Scout Notes - LIVMCI 2

One player I’m keeping a close eye on during the international break, or should I say on his game-time during the World Cup qualifiers, is Phil Foden (£7.9m). Foden has had the best xG and xGI of all of the City midfielders over the last two Gameweeks and his performance against Liverpool has put him firmly back on the radar. With Man City hosting Burnley after the international break, I definitely want an attacking asset from Pep Guardiola’s squad so will be monitoring Foden’s exploits with England carefully.

Someone else I’m monitoring over this international break is Ben Chilwell (£5.6m), who got a late-minute call-up in place of his Chelsea teammate, Reece James (£5.5m), who failed to recover from a recent injury. As a current Marcus Alonso (£6.0m) owner, I’m carefully monitoring the Englishman’s minutes and performances in the upcoming England matches as the two are now in direct competition for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI.

FPL Rabbi
Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 9

Both Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.0m) are on my watchlist over international break. I’m looking to buy a Chelsea defender ahead of the next Gameweek to captialise on Chelsea’s run of fixtures. With Reece James‘s (£5.6m) injury, I would like to see how the Chelsea left wing-backs will get on during their international fixtures.

This season, the Pep roulette has settled down defensively and João Cancelo (£6.2m) has become an ever-present. With good fixtures upcoming for Manchester City, increased solidity at the back and with Cancelo third among FPL defenders for expected goal involvement (xGI), he seems a great pick. My only concern for his minutes will be when Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) is available but Cancelo has become one of the key defenders at Man City and I can’t see that changing. I am carefully monitoring his performances and minutes with Portugal ahead of transferring him in.

Mahmoud Diaa
Son keeps up fine form as Watkins and Iheanacho enter FPL conversation

This international break is a great time to try and find an answer to the Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) v Marcus Alonso (£6.0m) debate. Both of them offer high-scoring options if we can figure out who will start for Chelsea; their international minutes and performances might give us an insight in to Tuchel’s plans for Chelsea’s nice fixture run.

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) has a great fixture in Gameweek 8 against Newcastle, who have one of the worst defensive records in the league at present. I am closely watching his minutes and performances with South Korea over the international break and hoping that doesn’t pick up an injury, as he could be a great differential punt in the upcoming Gameweek.

I suppose if you said to a toon fan that each body part of jamal khashoggie that was cut off with a bone saw represents a trophy you will win under this new ownership they'd bite the hand off you. do we all operate with some form of cognitive dissonance in our lives? yes, its pretty much impossible not to these days but this takes it to whole new level

      This is true.

But as a nation we sell them the military tools of the trade.

Then get moral over the ownership of a football club.

Whilst they bomb Yemen and families with British made equipment and arms. That is more hypocritical in my view and has endured for decades.

I don't think its the same. what a nation state does and how it behaves in a geo -political context is more out of your control as a citizen than the running of a football club you support. your choosing to do this. your choosing to go to the games and buy the shirts and liking the tweets. in germany fans have plenty of say on how a club is run. Toon fans don't have the agency they do in Germany but they absolutely could have done something as supporters to say no, we want success but not like this.

I think thier passion for Newcastle United is clearly blindsided and wouldn't ever be put to one side. Even with Kim Jung-un in the box seat!

Newcastle fans want to take a tilt at Manchester City and Chelsea as well as Man Utd and Liverpool along the way.

The human rights abuses of course are my biggest problem with this takeover.

But I honesly see it as the end of the game as we know it. The EPL will never be the same, it was bad enough with City, but Saudi Arabia are in a whole different ball park when it comes to its finances. They could go out and blow a billion quid on Mbappe who'd be free in 6 months if they wanted without having to bat an eyelid, no other club will come close to that spending power.

Great for newcastle fans if you can look past the human rights abuse, I'll give it 10 years before they become the best club in England, with best squad, best stadium, best facilities and the titles that come with it. I'd give a conservative 4 years till they win their 1st pl title.

FFP is a joke, and City have proven as much.

Keep losses to 105million over 3 years?

OK welcome to the new Saudi Arena, formally known as the sports direct arena.

Sponsership deal worth? Oh, lets make it 1billion over 5 years for the naming rights.

Shirt sponsor? Lets go with Saudi Shirts, theres another 1billion, and so forth for all and any "Sponser" deals.

Think we have went against FFP? Prove it, we have more money to lawyer up than anyone, and thats what counts.

            All true

FFP will be blindsided naturally. The issue is more about how long it takes to build something from scratch and to what extent 2 billion will outperform 1 billion and years of established football infrastructure.

It's not exactly a level playing field when Sovereign wealth funds buy up Manchester City and Newcastle to project soft power or Chelsea with dubious Russian wealth accumulated quickly.

Not even the New York stock exchange can compete with that at Manchester United and Liverpool.

It does distort competition but looking at Paris doesn't always work out right away.

FFP will prevent them blowing a billion quid on players

Even Man City can't spend more than £150 - £200m in a window - things are different now to when the Shieks originally came into City

If Newcastle get their next 3-4 years of recruitment, coaching, and management all absolutely bang on perfect, they might, (at a stretch) be in a position to make it into the top 4 for the 26/27 season - again at a stretch

And if they THEN managed to get the next 3-5 years after that of recruitment, coaching and management all absolutely spot on they might (at a stretch) be in a position to be simultaneously playing in europe and mounting a title challenge somewhere out towards 2030 (again - at a stretch)

But there are so many ifs layered in there that if you applied all those ifs to any other club you wouldnt have them over-achieving either

Yes they'll be able to buy a few players now - but this isn't FIFA or Championship manager, throwing loads of money at players doesn't guarantee success or anywhere near it

You are being a bit naive if you can't see this as a turning point for football. It's been bad enough the past 20 or so years, but has remained somewhat competitive.
This takeover changes everything, and its a matter of time before Newcastle are the best club in England. And will be so far ahead of the rest of the pack.

Money does guarantee success, City have shown as much, and this is on another level to even what they have done.

Also, any hope that FFP will save it is also far fetched.

Totally disagree that "it's a matter of time until Newcastle are the best club in England" and that "Money does guarantee success"

That's paper/tabloid talk - the amount of things Newcastle would have to get right in the next 10 years to win a league is off the charts

It's not impossible obviously - Blackburn & Leciester have won leagues in the last 25 or so seasons - but spending money doesn't guarantee success (No matter how much dissonance that might generate with certain people, or how uncomfortable it might make them)

Well we can come back in 40 years when I'm an old man, and see who was right.

Its a vanity/sports washing project, and they will want to be the best, and the biggest factor is the have the funds to do it, and dwarf every single other team.

We can agree to disagree, as you obviously have a completely different outlook.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts on City managing to win the league within 4 seasons of their takeover - was that just a fluke with everything falling into place?

As long as the saudis are interested in the experiment, they will make Newcastle the best club, 10/20/30/40 years of outspending rivals by 10-1 if they want will end up with the expected result.

These huge, generic, open-ended statements like "it's only a matter of time" and "come back in 40 years" are just the typical bluster of a tabloid trying their best to sensationalise & drum up noise and aren't even really measurable enough to be of value

There is a set of circumstances under which Newcastle could win the league, of course there is, but there are many MORE sets of circumstances under which they don't win the league, ever.

This isn't a game of FIFA where you can edit 5 or 6 big players into a team & press the right buttons and beat the computer or some foul-mouthed 13 year old sitting in his room in Woking

It's professional sport where there is uncertainty, competition, personalities, politics, luck, variance and a billion and one other factors that have to go right for a club to go from where Newcastle are now to winning the league

It would take Newcastle at least 5-6 transfer windows at £200m+ per window to get "a billion pounds" into the club - and what do you think Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd etc are going to be doing during those 5-6 windows? Standing still?

Again - it's not impossible that Newcastle some day win the league. It;s not technically impossible for a lot of clubs. And they will have a lot of bananas to throw around all of a sudden.

But a club like Newcastle would need to get every single decision right, on and off the pitch, as well as navigating FFP to spend billions, for a period of years, if not decades to get into a position to win the league - money doesn't "guarantee" anything in sport - that's Jamie Redknapp/Daily Star type hyperbole that helps sell newspapers and sell Sky subscriptions

As a wise philosopher once said - always in motion is the future

It's depressing. Few come out of this well. My long-held sympathy for Toon fans has now dried up. When will we see the Taliban and the Syrian regime buying up clubs?
All I can do to make a token contribution is to adopt a position of ABU - Anyone But Newcastle United. I haven't had a top-flight club to despise since the ancient days of Dirty Leeds.

It is depressing - Toon have long been one of favourite clubs and now I'm caught out by this and I imagine any sympathy I have for them will dry up.

I'm also slightly depressed by one more piece of the Premier League becoming a de facto Super League slotting into place. It's been an incremental shift but the nature of the PL is really quite different now to what it was even 10 years back. Give it an other 10 years and we'll be fairly close to a no relegation league in all but name I fear.

Yes its terrible that money is coming into the premierleague and a different team might join the top six.

Are you serious? The league is already uneven and this just adds another player at the top. If they pay their taxes properly what really is the issue from that standpoint?

I'm escaping twitter for a while because of this issue. Seeing those fans celebrate, and I understand why, makes me feel sick. I got jumped on for saying I would happily ditch my club for this. But I definitely would - assuming that protest didn't satisfy the situation.

The amount of folk saying 'Oh you watch Disney, Oh you drink at Starbucks, you hypocrite' (I don't fwiw) are unbelievable. It's no wonder we have the government we do, let alone allowing such people to own a great club. That said, the Premier League need to take more flack for this - ultimately the fans didn't make this call (though they can react accordingly).

Completely agree with you. Most of the Toon fan responses I'm seeing are in the categories of 'I don't give a toss about morality' or 'whataboutery'. It's true that football is a dirty business at this level, but there's a lot of false equivalence going on. I despise gambling firm millionaires and hedge fund managers, but they are hardly the equivalent of genocidal brutes responsible for the death and starvation of countless thousands of children. I just can't accept that.

Funny you should ask. My business is finding jobs for migrant workers. Their safety is paramount and I don't touch Middle Eastern countries with a bargepole.
The simple answer is I don't accept the conditions Qatar puts on the workers. If watching the World Cup meant my money went to that regime, I would boycott it. The brilliantly ironic situation is that the cable company that shows the games (the only way to see them in my country) uses the pirate channels from Saudi that have held up the deal. Here in Cambodia I actually get to see all the football (including all the 3 pm PL kick-offs) for free (i.e. the cable fee is dirt cheap and no extra for the football). I know that's not a helpful answer to draw up clear-cut principle, but you did ask about my personal situation and there it is.

Doesn't it go deeper than financial support though? The point of sports washing is image manipulation, so if you're watching those games and that tournament, legally or otherwise, your participation is no better than Newcastle fans continuing to support their team. If you refuse to watch it then you have every right to criticise, good on you, but we'll see if that happens

Yes the purpose of buying a club or hosting a World Cup in these cases is for soft power/image manipulation rather than for profit. What can ordinary bods and fans do? Protest and speak out about the abuses is one tactic. If Toon fans were to do that, and display anti-Saudi regime banners, that would be great; unfortunately what I'm seeing is mostly accepting and justifying the murderous regime - exactly what the owners want. The other tactic is to hit them in the pocket by boycotting their product. In my case, I don't see how watching the games in my own home for free is benefitting Qatar in any way; participating without their knowledge and not handing over any money is at best a neutral stance, I'd say.

Honestly I think asking the fans to boycott the team they've supported all their lives is unfair to ask, it's not like we elected the Saudis to be owner. And I take issue with the 'Toon fans' part. When the Saudis were sniffing around Man Utd, the fans were polled and 91% were in favour of such a takeover (google it). And I don't see many people justifying the Saudis at all. I'd imagine the vast majority have no idea who they are and what they represent. At the end of the day we live in a society where money is king and nothing else matters. It's sick and it's sad, but everyone engages with it everyday and it touches every part of public and private life. Why does it fall solely on the newcastle fans to be the ones to have to stand up and say 'no'?

You're right - it's not on to single out Toon fans and expect them to boycott games. What I think would be viable is to educate fans and try to get them to clearly divide in their minds support for their club and support for the ownership. They did it perfectly well when it came to Ashley; unfortunately, that wasn't so much due to his labour abuses as to his contempt for fans and shallow pockets.
You cite Man United - to be fair, despite the trophies and big players the owners have brought to the club, their fans do protest the ownership. Toon fans can do much the same, albeit for different reasons.

From a human perspective I’m very uncomfortable with these people owning a Premier League club.

At the same time, I don’t understand people going after Newcastle fans for being happy about it. I think it’s perhaps difficult for City, Utd, Chelsea etc. Fans to understand the misery they’ve been subjected to the last 14 years. They’re absolutely right to be happy about it.

From a footballing perspective, I’m not really bothered at this stage. It’s just one more team jumping the ladder. Every top team is where they are largely as a result of spending an absolute load of money at this stage.

Lifelong fan here. This isn't Newcastle fans' fault. Whatever your opinions, we are blameless. The takeover will revitalise both the club and city. See the work that's been done in Manchester by Man City.

Personally, I'm one of the tiny minority of fans that likes Bruce and does resent the takeover to a degree. I'd much rather the club was successful 'organically', and would rather we weren't viewed as a joke of a club like Chelsea and City, able to throw enough money at a problem until it's fixed (Man Utd too I suppose, lol, but at least that's more organic).

Mixed feelings, but optimistic. Sure they're murderers, but that's half the clubs in the CL. Nasty regimes are everywhere, and it's the PL and British government's fault for letting them into football. I'm delighted for my fellow fans and the city, while cautiously hopeful myself.

    Morning all,

    Thoughts on the below;

    Sanchez
    TAA Marcal Tierney
    Salah(c) Raphinha Greenwood Saka
    Lukaku Jimenez Antonio

    Foster Livra Williams Sissoko

    2.7 ITB and 1 FT.

Does Marcal to Cancelo make the most sense (will wait until next week)

    Thanks!

I am on WC and my core team structure will be like:

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Livramento *
Salah Raphinha Mbeumo Douglas Luiz *
    Lukaku Antonio *

I am pondering over the following options:
    A) Duffy, Son, Toney (Brownhill instead of D. Luiz because I'm 0.1 short of money for that draft)
    B) up to 5.0 def (may go for cheaper and money ITB), Son, Hwang
    C) up to 5.1 def (may go for cheaper and money ITB), Foden, Jimenez
    D) Dias, Foden, Toney and 0.2 ITB

    Which option would you prefer?

Cancelo can play there when Zinchenko is back. No one is rotation-proof. He'd score a bit less than Dias, but for less dosh, he's value for sure.

Anybody else worried about Hwang as a Son enabler? Just worry we haven't seen enough of him to warrant having him as 3rd forward just to accomdate Son, and if he fails there really isn't much other option unless you go with a Watford forward (feel 4.5 forward is a waste when we need a strong bench as much as ever) or scramble to find the funds for Toney

Its a slight concern. Antonio has a tough run starting in 11, so perhaps an exit strategy of Hwang to Toney could be funded by Antonio to Edouard/Maupay/Armstrong/Saint-Maximin/Iheanacho for a few weeks?

This. Also, I don't think you should be getting Hwang as a permanent starter. I would have him rotating with Mbeumo. This way you can afford to bench him a few weeks if the punt fails.

Exactly! Especially with so many good cheap assets in mid and attack. He's the frontline version of Gray/Mbeumo/Livra/Duffy

Starting Hwang until GW14, bench GW15 (or earlier, if his form drops), becomes Antonio in GW16. Antonio to Toney GW11 and Raphinha to 4.5 in GW16 will generate funds for Hwang upgrade. If he becomes crap before then, he'd be regularly benched for my 4th mid or def instead. My first sub between now and GW15 is good enough to start

So the Hwang exit strategy is to bench him until I downgrade Raph, more or less

My WC team is gonna come down to 3 slots and it will heavily depend on TAA's fitness.

    Ramsdale Foster
    XX Cancelo Rudiger Duffy Livramento
    Salah XX XX Raphinha Brownhill
    Lukaku Antonio Toney

    TAA + Son + ESR
    TAA + Foden + Mount

    Son + Tierney + Foden
    KdB + Walker + Townsend
    KdB + Chilwell + ESR

I think the other slots I've pondered and I'm not gonna move them. I like all those guys too much. Antonio is a 10m forward I'm paying less than 8m for. Frankly, I don't care about the difficult fixtures and the next 3 are not even that bad. If he blanks and looks bad in all 3 I'll ship in GW11. But I have faith he'll continue to deliver.

The rest are fairly template/boring and don't need to be explained. Toney is fairly locked in because he has a great run of games from GW10 and I'd rather buy early and hold especially since he's a 90 min man on penalties.

Much prefer Son to KDB options and I'd want to see a lot more from Mount before committing.

So for me, it comes down to:

      TAA + Son + ESR
      Tierney + Son + Foden

I think I'd go the former and rotate ESR with Duffy and Livramento

Yeah I'm not super convinced KdB is worth it, but it could be rank defining if he decides to haul like we know he can. Two assists for Belgium last night too and his underlying stats are superb.

I think he could be the differential I need to make a move up and if not, I can downgrade to Son in GW12 anyway with no loss of step.

I'm leaning the TAA + Son + ESR if TAA is fit but if he's not, I'll probably go the KdB route and chance it.

I have a similar setup as you at the moment

      XXX Foster
      XXX Cancelo Rudiger XXX Livramento
      Salah XXX Raphinha Mbeumo Brownhill
      Lukaku Antonio Toney

Depending on which GK out of Ramsdale/Raya/Sanchez I go with, the 4th def would cover the other team in Duffy or White.

TAA/Dias/Azpi for the 3rd premium def spot. Still not entirely ruled out 4 premium defs but I want a long term defence and not want to waste a FT on defence.

Foden v Son for the last mid spot

      1. Tonyawesome69

My preference would be the two options listed below

Ramsdale + Duffy is clear imo. Cheaper than Sanchez + White. And Duffy has more goal threat and Ramsdale makes more saves.

I like Duffy a lot. He's top for ICT Threat among defenders which is crazy. I genuinely think he's one of if not the best defender less than 5.5m considering Brighton are also strong defensively.

Yeah same dilemma as me for the last two slots. TAA fitness will decide.

I don't think he's droppable on current form. He's been very good. They'd drop Veltman or Burn first imo.

            Lamptey/Veltman Duffy Dunk Webster March/Burn

Cucurella owns the LWB slot now. The rest seems correct, afaik. Veltman will likely displace Webster when Lamptey starts (might take a while, still). Burn and March haven't impressed

Brighton have a lot of options in defence once they are all fit and available. Dunk and Webster are nailed in the CB spots IMO. March isn't getting a sniff with Cucurella the favoured LWB at the moment.

            2. Goonsquad245
              • 7 Years
              2 years, 5 months ago

He's not safe long term though - and your 4.5 defender is not where you want to be making transfers.

Because of the way Brighton want to play, I think Veltman is more suited to the system than Duffy is. We'll likely see in fairly short order.

Also, I think Sanchez is a better option than Ramsdale - but it's close. Brighton defence is better than Arsenal's and the difference in saves really isn't that much (think it was ~0.2 per game on average last season)

              1. Tonyawesome69
                • 5 Years

Potter has mentioned previously both Veltman and Lamptey can be on the field at the same time which suggests Lamptey RWB and Veltman RCB at some point.

Brighton defense being better than Arsenal's is debatable.

Arsenal's defense since White, Gabriel, Partey came into the team are statistically the best in the league - last 4 gameweeks (albeit with kind fixtures).

But I will give you that Duffy is not nailed. At least not compared to White. I don't think it's a big problem though because ultimately, he's 2nd bench slot. I've made teams with 3.9m non-playing guys before. Duffy being sat on the bench rotting and not playing is not the worst thing in the world. 0.4m is not that much to pay and I will get that value immediately by starting him this week to cover Raphinha's likely absense.

I would normally agree with you having a cheap player rotting on the bench but in recent weeks with injuries 3 playing bench options have been very helpful. Duffy should be fine short term but long term is still unknown.

Ramsdale + Duffy is only 0.1 cheaper than Sanchez + White (at current prices) so not much but still a +

I agree with the goal threat and saves argument. My slight worry with Duffy is Brighton will have Burn, Webster, Veltman (if Lamptey is available for RWB) vying for the other 2 CB spots. Duffy has been one of their best players this season. For Ramsdale, if he makes a mistake, Arsenal have Leno waiting for his chance.

      Oh, this is tough

I like Son Tierney Foden a lot. A whole lot, especially with Tierney flying under the radar and working well with Duffy and Livra for that 3rd def spot. TAA will be sorely missed, definitely. Wish there was a way to squeeze out that 0.1 for Mbeumo. If ESR will be your first sub most of the time in a 4-3-3, not expected to bang in stuff regularly as a member of your XI, I'll go for TAA Son ESR

Seen everyone having a dig at Newcastle fans. At the end of the day the Saudi Public Investment Fund has sizeable stakes in EA, Uber, Boeing, Disney (who own Marvel), Twitter and Facebook. If you use any of these product/services you have no right to criticise the Newcastle fans. If you plan to watch the World Cup in Qatar, where close to 10k slave workers have died building the stadiums, you have no right to criticise the Newcastle fans.

Is it good that football teams are bought by murderous nation states? No, of course not. Are the Saudis morally bankrupt? Yes, of course they are. That's not the fault of the Newcastle fans though and expecting them to stop supporting their team is so stupid and hypocritical.

Do you honestly see no difference between Saudi PIF having a stake at Uber and owning Newcastle football club? It's incredible how many mental loops people are ready to jump just to feel better about themselves. I don't know anyone who attach their identity to their Uber car the way they a football fan does. Is it funded from the same source? Sure. But I won't pose with a Saudi flag, that says "There's no god but Allah" with a sword on it - to depict strictness of their justice, you know, the same sword they use to behead gay people, insignia of a country that funded ISIS for years, just because my Uber car arrived - unlike Newcastle fans.

Give over, every fan base will have idiots or people who do not have the time or inclination to keep up with foreign affairs. Do you think those fans have sat down and read Amnesty International reports and the Guardian articles about SA's atrocities? Most people don't care/know. The fans posing with flags must represent less than 0.001% of the fan base. If anything it is worse you continue to use Uber. As you say your identity isn't tied up in it. Many football fans' identities are tied to their club. You could easily switch to a different taxi provider, but you don't, so wind ya neck in. Anyway, enjoy boycotting the World Cup next year, as I'm sure you are going to do

It was 6500 in February, it will be over 10000 by time the World Cup kicks off. The 'slave' bit is well documented. Migrants have their passports confiscated on arrival and then work to pay off the debts they owe their bosses (transport, food, accomadation). This is how modern slavery works worldwide. I would rule out Townsend with DCL and Rich expected to be back after IB.

Gray is still a decent option when playing LM/LW or #10 behind DCL.

Doucoure probably edges it being B2B and nailed 90 mins

My defence has TAA, Alonso Laporte, Cresswell and Dier. I'm grudgingly getting rid of Alonso, now that Chilwell is back. torn between a straight Chelsea swap (Alonso- Chilwell or Alonso - Azpilicueta) and Alonso - Cancelo

Seeing a few WC drafts featuring Son and TAA.

In my opinion, the next 4 games are quite tough for both Spurs and Liverpool and both players would be better options from gw12 onwards rather than gw8. Don't think there's a need to get them in this early.

Think there will be other better value players who will score more from gw8-11 than Son and TAA and struggling to justify two expensive inclusions on a gw8 wildcard

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

I don't think people who're getting Son or TAA are looking at fixtures. They don't have competition at their prices, and are rather unpredictable since they have set-pieces and are VERY involved in open play, regardless of team form. So if you're going without, it might take two hits to crowbar them in

It's more of an argument if going, say, Lukaku over Ronaldo or Chilwell/Azpi over Rudiger/Alonso. It's like going without Salah or Vardy: in or out, locked in long-term, very difficult to reverse

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Agree. TAA transcends fixture. Son I'm not so sure about - last season he would have transcended fixtures, but at this time I do think he's hampered by The Incredible Sulk. But as ZA suggests, the alternatives around his price point are either rotatable City and Chelsea assets, or declining United ones.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

Yeah. I'm not against going without them: there are justifiable reasons either way. I just don't think it's as easily reversible as suggested here. It's the kind of team structure decision that wildcards are here for

I think defenders suffer more from fixture difficulty than any other category because they lose points for multiple goals conceded.

That said, I don't believe anybody transcends fixtures at all.

TAA and Son are long term steady points. If I go with them on WC, I'm holding and riding the ups and downs in form and fixtures because of their pedigree.

On WC, which one is better:

    Ramsdale
    TAA Dias Rudiger
    Salah Raphinha Saka XXX
    Lukaku XXX XXX

    Foster Livramento Duffy Brownhill

    A) Zaha + Antonio (likely GW10 move to Toney) + Jimenez
    B) Zaha + DCL (likely GW10 move to Toney) + Jimenez
    C) Sarr (likely GW11 move to Zaha) + Antonio (likely GW10 move to Toney) + Jimenez
    D) Sarr (likely GW11 move to Zaha) + DCL (likely GW10 move to Toney) + Jimenez
    E) Mahrez (one week punt then move to Zaha most likely) + A Armstrong (likely GW10 move to Toney) + Jimenez
    F) Son + A Armstrong + Toney

    Some reasoning behind it:

    - Son will never be a cash cow because he has an incredible run between GW12 and 15. I don't like any of the 5.5 mids even if it seems the flavour of the moment.

    - My biggest WC differentials were going to be Zaha and JWP but his suspension ruined everything.

    - I'm leaning more towards any of the first four options at the moment, with potentially DCL if he is fit for 2GWs before moving to Toney and maybe Sarr instead of Zaha if i feel i can make the Zaha reverse move for him in GW11.

    - If TAA is fit he's in, if not most likely i'll play Livramento or Duffy every week until he's fit and put the extra money into Son.

    - Cancelo will be rotated in the future, hasn't happened yet because Zinchenko hasn't been fit. Also Laporte, Ake will be able to fill LB if required when Stones gets more minutes.

    - The problem with F) is that doesn't leave me margin to make any good transfers between GW9-12

    Any feedback is appreciated,
    Cheers

Agree to disagree on the 200pt potential. He used to have much, much greater G+A involvement and got nowhere near. Even adding 5 penalties wouldn't have got him close.

      3. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

        200 points is very ambitious!

It's worth bearing in mind that Palace haven't been creating that many chances despite the new attacking outlook. This is fairly constant with Vieira sides perviously - nothing necessary about it but a word of caution not least as the high press and possession game negates the strength of Zaha on the counter. It's also the case that Zaha GI is likely to be much less this season than previously just because there are other outlets in attack.

The plus side to Zaha is that he is fairly consistently in an inside left position and not wide on the wing. This is typically when you want to pick him. Personally I think Edouard is the better punt. He'll only improve and there have been positive signs already.

    2. Camzy

I don't mind the Zaha punt and you seem set on it, so go for it.

Jimenez is in 5/6 options so I think you should just put him in since you like him, clearly.

A is the one for me. Antonio is a 10M forward imo.

Don't pick a team that requires a transfer right away. Aim on WC should always be to roll FT the following week and then reassess. Injuries would be the only thing that might force your hand.

      1. ASOUSA12
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Antonio has shown to be a 10M forward in a good fixture run and no player is fixture proof. That's why i think he's clearly droppable at least until the really good run from Lukaku ends.

          • 5 Years

Ignoring injuries, you have to go back to his stint as a midfielder (first half of 19/20 season) to find when Antonio wasn't fixture-proof

Antonio has 34 goal involvements (24 goals 10 assists) in his last 43 league appearances (41 starts 2 subs) - and has only just started taking penalties

Something clicked with him in late February of 2020 & he just hasn't looked back

If you think he's disposable while not injured then you haven't been paying attention to the last 18+ months

On WC, i need to take some bets and these potentially are:

            - GW8-9: DCL WHU (H) WAT (H) > Antonio EVE (A) / TOT
            - GW10-11: Toney BUR (A) NOR (H) > Antonio AVL (A) LIV (H)

People are ignoring the impact that Europa League will have in West Ham's energy levels for their Premier League games and expecting they keep the same level of performances as last year.

Potentially, i may get him back in GW12 for a Lukaku downgrade to fund Son, if any of Iheanacho / Ings / Bamford aren't firing till then.

Worst case scenario i would get him back in GW14/15 when Jimenez run ends.

You don't have to bet against one of the highest owned and highest scoring players in the game. There are much better and safer bets than that. Zaha is one.

Fixtures are not everything. Antonio's performances and return levels are elite and West Ham are a very decent side. Certainly top 8, probably top 6.

I can't see him punishing me heavily between GW8-12/14. He won't be captained and i expect the saving in Toney / A Armstrong to be applied in other positions to generate more points during this run.

Sarr fixtures are not great, but i still have some value on him and if Liverpool are potentially without Allison and Fabinho then suddenly not such a bad fixture. Then Sarr -> Zaha is potentially such a good move in GW11 as Zaha's next 3 fixtures apart from Newcastle aren't great
