Is Michail Antonio a fixture-proof pick in FPL?

Michail Antonio (£8.0m) looks set to become the most-selected forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in the run-up to Gameweek 8, with Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6m) hemorrhaging owners.

Antonio is also the highest-scoring player in his position, averaging 8.2 points per match.

West Ham United sit second-bottom of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty over the next eight Gameweeks, however:

With that in mind, it’s worth a look at Antonio’s track record against the so-called ‘bigger’ clubs to see how he traditionally fares when the schedules get trickier.

We’re just examining Antonio during David Moyes’ second spell in east London here, which gives us not far off two years’ worth of data. It is only under his current boss that he has carved out a career as a bona fide centre-forward, having previously operated as everything from a right-back to a left-winger under former head coaches.

Our thanks go to TopMarx for his dredging of the historic data for this piece.

ANTONIO v THE ‘BIG SIX’

Goals6Blanks7 (50%)Appearances14
Assists310 Points+1 (7%)Total Points67
Bonus9Points per Match4.79

Antonio’s record against the traditional Premier League elite in the second coming of Moyes is very decent indeed, with nine attacking returns in 14 appearances.

It’s even better when we look at his last 10 run-outs, a period that coincides with West Ham’s upturn in form at the back-end of 2019/20.

In those games, Antonio averages 6.0 points per match and has only blanked on three occasions.

The West Ham striker scored against Manchester City home and away last season and produced a 12-point haul in his previous meeting with Chelsea, although has yet to face the meaner, Thomas Tuchel incarnation of the Blues.

Thanks Neale, this is spot on for me! My deliberation this week is to keep Antonio and get Foden, or downgrade Antonio and get KdB in...hmm.

Tough one, best of luck! How much of a downgrade would it be? We talking Toney or more Dennis levels?

Basically bench fodder to accompany Gallagher and Livramento, who I feel are possibly strong enough. Heart says KdB, head says Foden!

Great article, but it would also be good to get a touch of non-statistical input. How does moyes set his team up against the bigger teams, and do those matches actually not hinder antonio, albeit the defence finds themselves under pressure a lot more?

Yes, fully agree. But think you can find similar point from other players next 5-6 gws.

This. The amount of points he'll score over the next 5-6 will be matched by other cheaper assets imo.

Yep, very possibly. Not having the Wildcard in play makes the decision to keep much easier for me as there are bigger gains to be made elsewhere but it's more of a consideration for those who are using the chip now and trying to squeeze as much cash as out as possible to go big at the back/accommodate the likes of Son etc.

True. I would've definitely held on to him if I wasn't WCing this GW, due to other serious fires needing more attention. A defender each from City and Chelsea and wanting Son as well is my reason for shipping him on my WC.

Maybe this is true, but unless you plan a ft 5 games ahead when you want him back by then, i would just stick with him. As long he matches the others there is no reason to ship him

Antonio isn’t fixture proof however west ham are more of a counter attacking team so some of these bigger teams which have a pressing style actually suits west hams style of play. I wouldn’t sell him

Think it's more about West Ham going off the boil now with fixture congestion and Moyes' commitment to do well In Europe. And Antonio generally doesn't play well when the team isn't playing well.

Yeah, another good point. Bit of a wafer-thin squad, too, a risk of the players around him being run into the ground by December even if he himself is being managed carefully.

      1. Philosopher's Stones
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah. Their thin squad does worry me as well. He'll still score points imo, but if one's on a WC, like me, downgrading him to other options who'll match his points for sometime to come will probably help use the money elsewhere.

In their defence, they generally play the whole match so if, for instance Livra is on the bench with good fixtures, there's decent potential upside. I brought Chilly in on a WC last week for fun 4-5 weeks before he goes back to TAA. But that's me - I can't get on board with Rudiger, Dias etc...too safe!

So far it looks good on the data. Low xGc and big chances but a decent amount of shots conceded. Saves, bonus. But that might just be coz of the tough opposition making them sit back, in the easier fixtures u might be right, although you'd probably expect easier fixtures would breed more cleansheets

I have a decent squad but considering WC to load up on City/Chelsea players. 1 FT & 1.9m ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA - Rudi - Reguilon
    Salah - Raph - Benrhama - Sarr
    Ronaldo - Antonio - Toney
    Foster - Veltman - Tsim - Brownhill

Would do Sanchez, Regulion, Tsim, Veltman, Benrhama - Sarr - Ronaldo > Ramsdale, Cancelo, Dias, Livra, Saka, Townsend, Lukaku

Worth it or save for a more dire situation?

Quite tasty that, but yes, good players will have to be left on the bench.

Problem is that if you decide to try and get another premium it then completely screws everything up, so you’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Friday night of an international break. Raiders will raid regardless of security precautiins taken. Some of them thrive on the challenge.

Been there - done that! They all thrive on the challenge. They love a bit of disruption, wherever they can cause it. The harder the security, the more it will make them move on to easier prey.

I’d have said Ramsdale when he was 4.5. I’d probably go Raya now but if it’s between those two I’d say Ramsdale

Think there are better options than Mbuemo at that price range like Everton boys. Toney probably the best option at his price

Yes, definitely. May go for Maupay as a one week punt before moving to Toney too (or maybe even ASM as a 2 week punt)

Cheers. I've had Toney since gw1 so will definitely be holding him on wc. I just think when Brentford score toney or mbeumo are always likely to be involved. They remind me of the Deeney Ighalo partnership.

Whiskey is wonderful. If you are young; my sisters ex said the worst thing he ever tasted was Laphroaig, a week later he said the best thing he ever tasted was Laphroaig. Pallets change quickly.

I'll be 53 in a couple of weeks. I like whiskey, used to have a nice few pints of porter, and a few neat Jimmys with a cigar before heading out clubbing in the 80s and 90s before the Puritans stopped drinking in pubs. I prefer to dilute it a bit now in my old age!

Scotch thus far at home, Haig Club and Glenfidditch. But have tried Irish out and about and enjoyed that too.

              Yet to try Japanese.

Again, with no patronising tone (I’ve already been wrong on this thread), if you’re trying Haig, you must be young as it’s a David Beckam whiskey.
I would encourage you to buy the Michael Jackson whiskey book.
The whiskey you are currently trying are very basic.
Your next step is other parts of The Highlands and then go to Islay.

                Plus one for Japanese.
In 19th/early 20th century they sent people to Europe and America to learn about education, engineering, law, military tactics and technology, railways etc. And one lucky soul got sent to Scotland and learned how to make whisky. Came back with a Scottish wife and started Suntory, still one of there main producers.

I don’t like booking in transfers within the next GW or two just after a WC as you never know what else can happen. I’m just going in with a solid bench to cover him if needed.

I would be surprised if raphinha plays. But I would hold him and would have him on a wild card as now he will have had a weeks rest. Might make livramento a good option if Leeds don’t have raphinha back in time

Have sold him on WC for Saka. Don't want to have 4 defenders paying as I already have three and want 4 MIDs so brought Saka. Plus once Raphinha is scoring a bit more then I can easily swap for Saka
