Should FPL managers buy Southampton players ahead of Gameweek 8?

After seven rounds of Premier League action, Southampton remain winless and sit just above the relegation zone with four points.

However, there have been encouraging performances against Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, while it’s also worth noting that they have played four of the division’s current top five.

Now, with fixtures easing, what comes next for Saints will be crucial, but for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, are their players worth investing in ahead of Gameweek 8, and if so, who?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

THE OUTLOOK

Firstly, Southampton will be without their captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) for the next two Premier League fixtures, with the midfielder having been sent off at Stamford Bridge last weekend. The third match of his suspension conveniently arrives in the Carabao Cup fourth round, which means that he should be back for Watford (a) in Gameweek 10.

The expectation amongst supporters is that Ibrahima Diallo (£4.5m) will step in, having impressed at Chelsea. In fact, it was his pass that found Tino Livramento (£4.2m) who then won their second-half penalty.

“Ibra is a fantastic player, I must say that. He should really play more games.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

However, it’s the return of Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) which could be key to unlocking Southampton’s attacking potential. The Scottish international has been sidelined with a calf injury, but is expected to make his first start of the season in Gameweek 8.

The fact that Saints have not won a Premier League match without him in the side since December 2019 highlights his importance to the group, something Ward-Prowse touched on in a recent interview:

“His quality going forwards and the way that he can shift from a slow pace dribble to fast pace really worries defenders and gives us a new dimension – and variety. This will be really important for us now.

He’s an incredibly important player for us, with his quality on the ball. His decision-making in the final third is incredibly important. He gives us a really good balance in the team. We have a lot of competition for places in that area but I am sure that he will come back in and have a really positive impact.”

Armstrong is the Saints’ best ball carrier, who has the ability to drive forward and link play between midfield and attack. He will enable his team to play through the lines with more structure and could add the spark that gets the strikers firing.

Going forward, Southampton have struggled in the opening weeks, scoring just three goals from open-play, plus two Ward-Prowse penalties.

However, fixtures have of course played their part (see below), and the underlying numbers do suggest that they have perhaps been a little unfortunate not to score more.

Southampton’s Gameweek 1 to 7 fixtures

I love quirky stuff like that.

I left my Netflix subscription go a while back because there wasn’t much left on it that I didn’t watch that interested me.

I will be renewing my sub soon through to binge watch Squid Game and the Schumacher documentary.

Unrealistic?? You'll be spreading false rumours that the Middle Ages weren't as depicted in Game of Thrones next!

It is unrealistic. A lawyer's client talks to the lawyer in a room full of students in the very first episode. That's a breach of attorney-client privilege and the lawyer would lose their license. Ridiculous scene

There are many more instances where the show exaggerates things simply for shock value with no realism.

I see. But the brutal murder of 364 people in such a context is realistic? You know it's not a documentary, right?

    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Livramento Manquillo
Salah Son Raphinha Mbuemo Douglas Luiz
    Lukaku Antonio Toney
    0.0 ITB

What do you think about that WC draft?
Manquillo is questionable, but if you want to have that expensive defence + Salah, Son + that fron three you have to make a sacrifice somewhere else and why not for the third spot on the bench.

There fixtures are a mixed bag and Sarr new manager. Tricky, both capable of hauling. Guess you have no other targets apart from Son to split the difference? Got Antonio? Some don't buy the coverage thing but it can be a factor for me

I think he's a cracking 3rd striker to have, and hasn't compromised the rest of your side. I have touch of envy as it looks more balanced than mine and I don't have a lukaku/ronaldo figure up front.

I brought TAA in for his last tree 0, 1 and 0 points. If he is confirmed out now for gw8 a change with Son is on my mind. If I do this I will still have Shaw in my team - would like to get rid of him....Good or bad idea?

    TAA + Sarr -> Livramento + Son

    Shaw, Alonso, TAA, Duffy

A has the better forward line but then you have gone and selected Foden and Luiz who make no appeal. B for me.

Problem is Chillwell is an uncertain starter. You may as well get Christensen for 5.0 - he'll probably start 4 out of every 5 games.

Boxer beat a puncher. Fury is simply too good for anyone, he would make very short work of Joshua if that did ever happen. That was the best fight of the last 10-20 years

Agreed. It is clear that if Fury fought AJ, he would be a clear winner. I'd love to see Fury v Usyk. Probably not going to happen for awhile though. I see AJ is going to fight him again in March.

Based on the last fight I wouldn't say so. A slight exaggeration perhaps but certainly not hyperbole

No chance is more than exaggeration, he didn't perform well but just like against Ruiz the second time he's shown he can learn and come with a different gameplan, just annoying that he gets it wrong first time

We'll see, I fully expect him to use his size and power this time instead of trying to outbox usyk

Hyperbole is fanciful exaggeration not worth taking seriously. After he was totally outclassed in pretty much every round it is not fanciful to say he has no chance in the rematch, although it is a bit of an exaggeration as you never know. I'm a big Joshua fan and have watch ed all his pro fights. Ruiz he got careless and it was obvious what he needed to do in the rematch. He has not answer to Usyk who is just a much better boxer. Lets' stop being so pedantic anyway - why do you want to argue over phraseology

Me saying he fixed up second fight Vs Ruiz doesn't mean he did the same thing wrong Vs usyk, I was trying to point out that Joshua can adapt and there is a clear plan as the bigger fighter to beat usyk, use his power and strength and bully him instead of trying to outbox, I'm well aware he can't do that

I already missed he price rises for Ramsdale. So I can buy Ramsdale and Raya for 4.6. Who do you think is worth it? Currently at the moment I'm leaning towards Raya, but everyone seems to be getting Ramsdale and now I'm confused.

Both are fine and will probably score similar points come end of season. Get Raya if you think Leno has a slight chance to fight for #1 spot. I don't honestly and believe Ramsdale is undroppable after what he's shown so far on and off the pitch.

Ramsdale has played the easiest schedule of any keeper so far this season, by average FDR. He’s not a bad option, but I’d be careful tagging him as “undroppable” based on 4 games against Norwich, Burnley, Brighton, and Spurs at home

The league form table points out that Arsenal have been getting the points of basically a top 4 side for over 20 games now, and White/Tomiyasu/Ramsdale all seem to have improved that situation, even though they have barely had time to settle yet

                Ramsdale is very good value

Can't understand the Son love here.. especially at 10 plus price..

After Newcastle spurs have Westham, united and Everton.
And spurs blowing hot and cold..
Nuno at helm who is not known for an expansive playing style..

Been in and out of my wildcard draft but currently I’m of the view he’s too pricey for a player playing in a team that sometimes just doesn’t turn up. Same issue as Ronaldo.

I think a lot of people on WC are anticipating the fixtures just after that (lee bur bre nor) & buying him now bcause the awkward price point requires restructuring team.

Risky as all hell but if Ronaldo blanks Ronaldo, Gallagher, Coady, Marcel -> Jimi, Foden, Cancelo and Walker/Laporte for a -8 could be lots of fun.

Extremely risky when CR7 is playing against the D who have conceded the most shots in the box this season in GW8. I'm tempted to captain him.

Yeah CR7 is the conundrum. Could easily see him snag a goal or two which would make me look a right old fool with those transfers above. Basically betting on CR7 or City.

He's not better than the much more nailed on 5.5m - 5.7ms and he's more expensive and not worth the extra as a rotation risk for 5th mid.

His record was incredible last year too - 3 returns in over 1,000 minutes

I would definitely get him instead of Mbuemo

I mean, all this hype about Mbuemo is nonsense really when you dig into it anyways - especially compared to someone like Curtis Jones

Mbuemo is only playing as a striker and only has 3.92 XGi vs. Jones’ 0.28 XGi - but those are all just makey-uppy fairytale unicorn numbers anyways

What matters is - Jones is in an obvious hot streak, has locked down a place in the Liverpool team, and has the pedigree and previous to suggest it will continue

                      Definitely sign him

The important thing in FPL - and I can’t stress this enough - is ALWAYS look at the RESULTS of players in the last gameweek or two, maybe even three, and assume they will continue

Jones is an absolute steal using this rule

Thank you. Do you also think I should sell Antonio (no goals last GW) and bring in Son(Scored) for -8?

You mean you haven't already done it?!

Tut tut, your way behind the 8-ball here

                              Antonio is sooooo GW3

I mean, what has he even done in the last 4 gameweeks? He's clearly finished - get rid immediately

May I suggest Hwang, Werner or Hojberg perhaps (assuming you have Jones already)

Werner looks like a solid pick. Maybe sell Lukaku?

I think the bigger question is - Lukaku hasn’t scored for 3 weeks now - what the Sam Heck is he still doing in your team

Classic maximus condescension, yeah. I would avoid though, Jones wouldn't be playing if not for injuries to Elliott, etc & very very unlikely to be long-term starter

For me, Jones is overlooked. But he only works in a certain context; it's too simplistic to argue about 'yes' or 'no' (as it is about all players, making 95% of posts here nonsense in my eyes).

The point is, if you have 5.5m to spend, there are far better options. But if you have 5.0m to spend on a 5th mid who will mostly be on your bench but might want to step up to cover all these injuries we're getting, he's a better punt than any 4.5-4.6 prospect.

You'd have to be sure that you're third Liverpool spot after Salah and Trent won't be needed by someone else though.

Thanks. Looking for somebody to rotate with Hwang, 7th and 8th attacker. Could spend the extra $ on defence too.

My thinking is I need at least one City attacker so would you go Grealish or Foden?

I would have good bench cover for any rotation. I know the risk they could get a few 1 pointer sub appearances

              Cheers

I believe foden has Higher ceiling but Grealish is more nailed. Pick your poison

The latter. Greenwood has a good fixture and still looks assured of his place.

Excuse the rookiness (is that a word?) but how do you create your own stats tables to save for future reference in the members area, rather than looking at individual stats and changing views.
Is there a simple way to combine multiple stats in one view?
              TIA
