Manchester City have had an encouraging start to their 2021/22 campaign, despite a tough run of fixtures which has seen them visit Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

During their opening seven Premier League matches, they have netted 14 goals, and given their forthcoming schedule (see below), it’s easy to see why many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are scouting their assets ahead of Gameweek 8.

With Etihad encounters against Burnley and Crystal Palace in the next three, plus a trip to high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion – a side who they have traditionally done well against under Pep Guardiola – the upside is clearly huge.

However, nailing down a regular starting attacker isn’t straightforward. Looking at City’s two most recent Premier League matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, their ‘strongest’ XI probably looks something like this:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Rodri, Bernardo, De Bruyne; Jesus, Grealish, Foden

That will of course change as the season progresses, and we have seen before just how quickly the landscape can change. Only a few weeks ago, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) was of huge Fantasy interest but has now failed to feature since Gameweek 4, while Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m) – a popular pre-season pick – hasn’t started a single Premier League match since the opening day.

Manchester City’s 2021/22 Premier League line-ups and minutes

It’s also worth noting that for their forthcoming run of fixtures, Guardiola will probably look to use his full squad, and perhaps be less reliant on that ‘strongest’ XI.

The rotation is further complicated by two important UEFA Champions League clashes against Club Brugge, which have taken on extra significance following defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in Matchday 2. The first fixture, which takes place in Belgium, arrives just three days after Burnley, while the return match is four days after Crystal Palace’s visit in Gameweek 10.

There is also an EFL Cup trip to West Ham United to navigate after that latter match, but given that fringe players will surely be given a run-out here, if anything, it’s probably a positive for FPL managers.

Regardless of that, the schedule does suggest some rotation, which is why we have some big decisions to make ahead of Gameweek 8. So, before we give a player-by-player assessment of the main contenders, it goes without saying that if you do choose to invest, additional squad depth is definitely advisable.

Provisional FH draft for if my team looks decimated after the press conferences:

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo, Dias, Duffy
    Salah, KDB, Son, Saka
    Firmino, Maupay, Armstrong

Doubt it will come to this but if TAA, James, Jota and Raphinha look unlikely to play I go for it.

Looks good, but, and I am sure that you have considered this, 38GW season and just by avoiding hits and putting out who you can, you'll probably do okay.

Yeah, I almost certainly won't use the chip but will be somewhat tempted if we get early Liverpool news and Jota and Trent are out.

You'll probably regret playing it because DGW and all that. I'd just take some hits if it comes to that. Hits which make your team better long term and help you field XI this week. GL

WC team below, taken a few punts on rotation risk players but have enough on the bench to cover:

    Ramsdale / Foster

    TAA / Cancelo / Azpi / Chillwell / Livra

    Salah / Foden / Raph / Mbeumo / ESR

    Lukaku / Antonio / Hwang

Anyone care to try to name the 5 highest scoring defenders in the game without cheating? Your start is that the first 3 are

    Cancelo
    Alonso
    Dias

The other two are about to go on a great fixture run

Pondering what to do here boys and girls. I'm playing a more steady eddie game for the first part of the season. Current squad is:

      Sanchez / Foster
Shaw / Rüdiger / Chilwell (Livra / Tsimikas)
Salah / Benrahma / Sarr / Raphinha (Brownhill)
      Antonio / Ronaldo / Toney

      1FT 4.2M ITB

      A few things I've considered:

Need to lose Shaw but need a starting player this GW so I'll hold.
Considered Ronaldo to Lukaku but not this GW.
Sarr? New manager bounce so I'll hold.
Benrahma >>> Son (NEW). It feels like a 1 GW punt which will unbalance my team in many directions.
Benrahma >>> Foden (BUR). Seriously not feeling it with Pep roulette. Would rather trust MCI's def.
      Tsimikas >>> Dias/Cancelo. Dias I 'get', Cancello I don't. But I don't wanna transfer 2m to my def.

So I guess I'm gonna play my steady eddie game and save. If Raphinha doesn't start (considerably weakening LEE's attack) then Livramento will start instead.

      Anything obvious I've missed?

tbh I think the ball is in Alonso's court, Chilwell's level is pretty constant, Alonso's fluctuates, but he hasn't really done too much wrong this season so far; got him an International call up again and just put in 2 solid performances as a LB against two of the best International sides in the world.

It might sound ridiculous but for me until one of the 2 pushes ahead in the pecking order, either pick both or neither.

Can see why you don't want to commit an extra 2 million to your defence with the City def in for Tsimikas so fair enough. Shaw is prime for the boot........i'd do Cancello for Shaw tbh but if you don't like him Dias is a great move too.

I'd love KDB this GW. Burnley look absolutely primed to concede a few. Wouldn't shock me in the least to see De Bruyne get a goal and possible assist.

        Kinda harsh.

Maybe some posters are not native/fluent English speakers and live in exotic countries we can only dream about going to on holiday.

Or are native/fluent English speakers and are just totally drunk. Living in Derby.

        I agree it's a fine balance.

Who here would admit to being ADDICTED to FPL? If, like me, you're scrolling these pages deep into the monotony of the international break then chances are you are! I posed this question to myself last week and quite easily came up with about 50 signs of my addiction so thought it would be fun / kill some international break minutes to make a few tik tok videos to describe my signs of addiction to see which sound familiar to fellow FPL addicts. So far I've talked about...

    1. Excessive red list country knowledge
    2. Planning family events for weekends during an international break
    3. Knowing all player prices but not your partner's phone number
    4. Ordering your best players left to right on the official website
    5. Believing that the Premier League only exists to facilitate FPL
    6. Madly searching for lineups at 2pm on a Saturday (and the choice language when Alonso is benched!)
    7. Constantly checking for injury news, even when you've said you'd use the int' break to take some time out
    8. Last thing you think of at night, and first thing you think of in the morning (I.e. love!)
    9. All your bookmarks and subscriptions are FPL related
    10. Desperation to find out who got the assist (and if, of course, it was the intended target!)
    11. Checking who is on top bonus 5 mins in to a match
    12. Unnecessarily strong opinions on the chips
    13. Playing other fantasy games but just not getting to same hit as you do from FPL (or scratching the lockdown itch with Bundesliga!)

I've got plenty more to talk about yet but would be great to hear your signs of addiction (ideally keeping it light!)

Take a look here, and I'll add any good ideas to my list of vids to do next: tiktok.com/@the_fpl_addict

Whoops, was still last season. Now updated! I'm 11 years in but only count in rolling decades (I.e. my first year was rubbish!... not that it's got too much better since!) Addiction unfortunately doesn't always equal "good"!

"Addiction unfortunately doesn't always equal "good"!"

Ummm... isn't that what addiction is all about? And the key driver? Making the person feel good?

Involving yourself in drugs, alcohol, sex, airfix models, collecting subbuteo, will turn you into an addict. And you will feel good. Very good. (I'd recommend airfix as they've never toned down the glue. Get creative and stoned at the same time.)

But listening to a horse or a templar on here for advice (or all the druken people from Derby) does make you an addict.

Maybe take a step back from being a FPL addict.

And check out the airfix deals online.

If Salah is in the form of his life and is looking basically fixture proof.

And premiums are only value for money if captained.

I know nobody will do it, but...

Is there an argument for 1 premium (perma captain on Salah) and unlock the value in the rest of your squad?

    1. Zimo
      • 7 Years

It's my current set up, all I'll say is it takes patience, when a premium hauls who you don't own you just have to accept it and not panic.

Can I see your team ID?

I'm strongly thinking 4 at the back too. I think the surety of starts for those 4 over the long period between now and next wildcard will allow me to utilise transfers elsewhere and deal with injuries more easily. With rotation becoming more prominent than ever we are going to see teams struggling to get 11 starters more often. It's already happened once this season and this GW might be the second.

I have no idea but i think it would lead to bench headaches and inevitable hauls on your bench as your squad will be full of much better players. If your happy with that and can back yourself with your 11 picks each week it could work i guess.

Means you can play players like Foden and Chilwell. If they don't start then you will have a strong player to come off the bench.

If Lukaku is confirmed out this week I'll likely move him down to Watkins - which would leave me with Salah and then Son as my next highest.

And I'd be happy about it.

It's tempting. But it would probably mean double Chelsea defence and Mount over Lukaku. Its big Rom who scares me with that fixture run.

But then, would he be covered by the value spread out everywhere else.
