Who are the best Man City FPL attackers for their Gameweek 8 fixture swing?

Manchester City have had an encouraging start to their 2021/22 campaign, despite a tough run of fixtures which has seen them visit Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

During their opening seven Premier League matches, they have netted 14 goals, and given their forthcoming schedule (see below), it’s easy to see why many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are scouting their assets ahead of Gameweek 8.

With Etihad encounters against Burnley and Crystal Palace in the next three, plus a trip to high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion – a side who they have traditionally done well against under Pep Guardiola – the upside is clearly huge.

However, nailing down a regular starting attacker isn’t straightforward. Looking at City’s two most recent Premier League matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, their ‘strongest’ XI probably looks something like this:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Rodri, Bernardo, De Bruyne; Jesus, Grealish, Foden

That will of course change as the season progresses, and we have seen before just how quickly the landscape can change. Only a few weeks ago, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) was of huge Fantasy interest but has now failed to feature since Gameweek 4, while Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m) – a popular pre-season pick – hasn’t started a single Premier League match since the opening day.

Manchester City’s 2021/22 Premier League line-ups and minutes

It’s also worth noting that for their forthcoming run of fixtures, Guardiola will probably look to use his full squad, and perhaps be less reliant on that ‘strongest’ XI.

The rotation is further complicated by two important UEFA Champions League clashes against Club Brugge, which have taken on extra significance following defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in Matchday 2. The first fixture, which takes place in Belgium, arrives just three days after Burnley, while the return match is four days after Crystal Palace’s visit in Gameweek 10.

There is also an EFL Cup trip to West Ham United to navigate after that latter match, but given that fringe players will surely be given a run-out here, if anything, it’s probably a positive for FPL managers.

Regardless of that, the schedule does suggest some rotation, which is why we have some big decisions to make ahead of Gameweek 8. So, before we give a player-by-player assessment of the main contenders, it goes without saying that if you do choose to invest, additional squad depth is definitely advisable.

What happens if Lukaku is actually injured...

    Look at this...

    Ramsdale Foster
    Cancelo Chilwell Tierney Duffy Livramento
    Salah KdB Son Raphinha Mbeumo
    Werner Antonio Davis

It's actually rather nice if Timo Werner actually decides to be good.

Not sure it is the dream midfield, Camzy. KDB is going to have to equal his best season to justify 12m (or whatever he is now).

Also, structurally it is wrong. Forget about Lukaku for a moment, from around GW14 you are almost certainly going to want Ronaldo. So either you will have to re-structure at that time or you could do the simpler thing and have a premium striker now.

If Lukaku is out (which I doubt), you could still have Werner there, or DCL, or Vardy even but with enough banked to upgrade to Lukaku when he's fit. That would necessarily mean losing KDB but in all honesty I don't think that's a terrible loss.

To shape the squad with a super-premium striker slot is the thing, irrespective of short-term considerations really.

I think having KdB actually soft solves the premium forward problem.

        It's two moves or a simple -4 to do KdB + Werner > Lukaku/Ronaldo + mid-priced mid.

I went even more budget in attack and managed this:

        Ramsdale Foster
        TAA Rudiger Cancelo Duffy Livramento
        Salah KdB Son Raphinha Mbeumo
        Watkins Toney Davis

Again, I can switch the big hitter slot from KdB > Bruno or KdB + Watkins > Ronaldo/Lukaku + Mid-priced mid.

It's not that difficult really. But yeah, with Lukaku's fixtures, you kinda just have to get him I think...

        rest of the team is

        Ramsdale (Foster)
        TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger (Duffy, Livramento)
        Salah, Mbuemo, Raph, xxxx (Brownhill)
        Lukaku, Antonio, xxxx

So 6&7 attackers you can say, both would be needed most weeks but bench is strong enough to handle some benchings its the cameos that are more of an issue.

    Reasons to captain Salah GW8:

    1. It's Salah

Reasons not to captain Salah GW8:

    1. Early kickoff
    2. Watford have new manager, Ranieri
    3. Liverpool will likely be without key players Fabinho, Becker, Jota, and possibly TAA

    1. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Think 1. and 2. are not reasons to not captain Salah.

Fabinho has been in and out - Salah has performed with Jota or Firmino.
Liverpool can concede 5 goals and Salah is still a good option, so Becker doesn't matter.

So really the only thing that might matter is the TAA thing...and we don't know about that yet and may not know ahead of time.

      No worries from me!

    Couple of questions...

    1) is it plain stupid not to captain Salah this week? I can't say I have an obvious alternative given fixtures and doubts post IB. I'm looking to make some ground starting this week but seems this is not the week for differential captain.
    2) If you owned James, would you hold and hope he's back this week or next and go with him as your only Chelsea defender OR move him to City defender? It's either James or Semedo OUT for Dias/Cancelo this week

    TIA

      1. Play safe this week. If Salah goes off you could plummet from the castle turrets.
      2. You've held him a while now. Just hold? But Dias a great option.

yes, have held James to avoid a hit and had decent backup
Dias is my preferred option and would prefer to move Semedo obviously
Will see how news pans out in a day or 2

although having recently not played I would suggest injury. whether he would have been selected, a different topic.

Likelihood of Trent and Jota both being out? May have to take a -4 if so, with Jota or Dennis making way.

    TAA*, Duffy, Livramento, Cancelo
    Salah, Jota*, Gray, Benrahma

What do people think the implications of Ranieri will be on Watford and particularly Sarr,
Personally, for what we know him as a coach and their upcoming fixtures I would foresee a very pragmatic style, thoughts?

Would expect he will try and make them more direct going forward. They won't survive if they don't score more goals. Whether they have the personnel is a different story

        Thanks for your thoughts.
My question is in reference to my dilemma of deciding to keep either Sarr/Gray over the next 2-3 weeks.

I'm keeping Sarr for the next two - primarily because I need to focus transfers on the defence. It's an opportunity to sit him on the bench while assessing any changes to his performance under Ranieri.
The bigger picture, for me, is he's still got a sub-PL level squad to work with and I'm kind of expecting Ranieri's performance to be more akin to his job at Fulham. I don't expect to be keeping Sarr longer than I have to.

            Yeh good points.
To put it simply, I want Mbeumo and preferably before his rise. Who's a better option to keep for 2/3 weeks, Sarr/Gray before the other one (I keep) inevitable goes.

I would keep Gray over Sarr depending on your team setup and who you're targeting.
I'd like to move Sarr to Raphinha but won't be this week so holding this week and potentially vs Saints as well the following week. I'd want to see how Gray goes with DCL back whenever that is.

            Yes, I have Raphinha.
I don't even think given the fixtures I would field Sarr as I have good options with Duffy & Livramento's fixtures so it seems wise to trade to Mbeumo who has the better fixtures, on paper.

in my opinion they will be a counter attacking team. So sarr with his pace is a good option. But the rest of the team is pretty bad, so not sure how the team will perform overall

Hello all. Would really appreciate some advice here-
On -4 atm but still have some dodgy picks for the GW ahead with injuries.
Leaning towards WC to just make some necessary changes now to my overall squad.

    1. WC and just get the squad sorted out properly with decent back up!
    2. Just leave it as it is and hope for the best this GW.

    Sanchez.
    Alonso, Rudiger, Cancelo, TAA.
    Salah, Raphinha, Gray.
    Jimenez, Anto, Lukaku.
    Bachmann, Benrahma, Bissouma, Tsimikas.
    0.2m ITB, -4 taken already.

Is Mount a no go? Tuchel has said that Lukaku has missed him. But so many options ( Havertz, Ziyech, Pulisic, ) for one spot

With the "easier" fixtures I would expect rotation in the PL.

I thought it a little odd that Tuchel would name check Mount as having the best on field understanding with Lukaku within the squad and then still bench him after his return from fitness. Some bias here as i'm a Mount owner but i do see Mount coming back into the Chelsea midfield as it's pretty clear to me that they are missing some creativity to supply Lukaku, If i can see that surely Tuchel can too. Dunno maybe Ruth who i think is a Blue's fan would be able to give a more informed opinion.

Chelsea have a schedule which is two games a week through till Christmas, with possibility of World Club Champs being shoe-horned in somehow in December as well! Tuchel was responding to press questions about him resting Mount for a couple of games, a rest precipitated by him appearing jaded. His comments were probably aimed at preventing a press non-story about him being ' out- of -favour'. Pulisic allegedly back in training too. Chelsea need to win both their Malmo matches in next fortnight too after a Juve defeat. So he might still miss occasional FPL games imo. Hope this helps!

Feel like my WC is very template. Any feedback much appreciate. Thanks

    Salah Foden Raphinha Saka (Sissoko)
    Lukaku Antonio Armstrong

Hard to comment as there are a few players in this who are doubts for the weekend.
Depending on team news you could be looking at a different team given a WC has unlimited flexibility.
