If you handed the armband to Xabi Alonso tonight, you need not bother with the “stick or twist” dilemma. The Spain midfielder returned the highest individual score so far in EURO 2012, with two goals, a clean sheet and five recovered balls helped him to a staggering 28 point captaincy haul. For the rest of us, though, there’s still plenty to ponder over.

In truth, tonight was a disappointment. The top four in our Captain Poll – David Silva, Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas – all failed to pick up any attacking returns, with Torres’ owners left frustrated after he was omitted from the first XI by Vicente Del Bosque. France were woeful and offered little going forward – after all the pre-tournament hype, they grabbed just three goals over their four matches and limp home after a lacklustre performance. Time to contemplate tomorrow’s options, then, as we rundown the likely armband contenders.

Italy will be reliant on Andrea Pirlo to continue the superb form he produced over the three Group C games. The Juventus midfielder was the only player to produce attacking returns in all of the Azzurri’s matches and is by far their top scorer in the McDonald’s game, with 19 points accrued. Antonio Cassano is the only forward to start every match so far and will arrive in confident form, having broken his scoring duck in the previous encounter against Republic of Ireland. Mario Balotelli impressed in a brief sub appearance against Giovanni Trapattoni’s troops with a superbly taken finish and could replace Antonio Di Natale in the first XI, while Thiago Motta may flourish in a role in “the hole” if Cesare Prandelli continues with his 4-3-1-2 system.

For England, Steven Gerrard has been the main protagonist – similar to Pirlo, he has also produced the goods in all three of his appearances and, with 18 points on the board, leads the way for Roy Hodgson’s side. Wayne Rooney announced his return from suspension by nodding home the only goal in the win over Ukraine and will carry the hopes of plenty Fantasy managers – with just 8.2% ownership, he could prove a decent differential tomorrow evening. Danny Welbeck offers a mid-price armband alternative to his United team mate up front, while Ashley Young is afforded the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on the left flank, after a below-par tournament thus far.

suggestion for member feature: enable to search accroding to the average position of player, so you don't need to click on each match to look for it or search through list of players to do so.

also curious, will the new signings e.g. kagawa, hazard have average position map too?

anyway, it looks really really tempting and I am going to sign up as soon as you can pay without paypal.

Well done Mark 😀 and whoever helped him

      I haven't finished yet 🙂

it would be icing on the cake if you can select a team, and choose the GW range, and you can see the opponents' (the team the selected team is going to play in the selected GW) average stat, e.g. cross conceded from left wing etc.
and also the ability to exclude certain teams, since you maybe benching that player anyway

      GOD! I'm needy 🙂

It's not the same league, if you look you will have different rankings in each. One league is for where you live, the other is for who you support.

Just had a thought don't know if anyone else has thought about this but anyway I'm thinking of going with 5 spaniards and 5 Portugese players, I'll have 2 players from both teams in the other SF and my 4mil keeper. meaning with with my 4 free transfers I could (price could be an issue) be able to field a full 11 on the final.

Poor idea as you will limit your score in the semis for the sake of maybe not having to take a 3pt hit for the final

I disagree I think the semis will be tight low scoring affairs anyway meaning the top priced players don't score that highly anyway making this idea perfectly reasonable as long as you have the right players.

limit my score hmmmm... well that depends on whether I'm getting the right players in doesn't it?, plus I still get full use out of my squad for the two games without any points hits meaning that should Portugal or England/Italy get to the final my ML rivals would either go in with less players playing than me or be taking points hits which is to my advantage. I do see the idea behind loading up being that bad though but don't feel that's necessary as long as I have the right players in the right areas.

Worth the risk of putting him in I think.

      Downside is losing 2pts
Upside is potentially gaining at least 4pts if he keeps a clean sheet

Struggling to put together a team for the prices... the filter selection only allows to pick from teams going through and the cheapest player now seems to be Butland at 4.2...

How are people getting 4m players or have they/are they holding on to people like Maniatis of Greece despite him being out of the tournament?

I can't decide to hold on to players though who are out of the tournament and will deffo get 0 points or play a full team lineup of cheaper differentials in the hope that collectively they will score more.

Just got burned with Gomez and Torres in the quarters so might try the spread betting approach...

You need to keep at least a couple of cheapos to be able to make a team. In the example I've given below for my team I have Greek 4m Keeper and a Czech 4m def. I have been able to put out a decent 13 all from Germany, Portugal and Spain. Unless Germany don't make the final I won't need to take any hits either

Sorry for the minor panic there! Tho I imagine with the amount of people transferring him in as the cheapest option going, it'll probably drive his price up!

Oh Hoilett and Yakubu are gone for sure. Yak has a relegation release clause and is off to China and Hoilett will have plenty of options i think, he won't be playing for us though next season. Our bigger battle will be keeping some of the other players. The likes of N'Zonzi, Olsson, Dann, Formica, Rochina, Robinson etc could all be big players for us in the Champ but i suspect at least half of those will also leave as well 🙁

Right. Germany conceded twice against a poor greek side and scored 3 goals a good keeper would have saved. From a fantasy perspective is loading up on germans really a good idea? Seems to me spain is the safe bet - ronaldo could score but him and nani cant defend, portugals midfield 3 are average and will get demolished. Granted their back 4 is solid but they will concede at least 3 without a hard working 5 in front of them.
Germany on the other hand will face a great defence in either england or italy who wont get fooled by their movement like the greeks and hummels + badstuber are shaky at the back..rooney/cassano could score 1 or 2 on the break easily.
IMO best to fill up on spain, have boateng and ozil, ronaldo and 2 of rooney/welbeck/cassano/gerrard/pirlo

Usually I would agree, but against Greece, Germany had an unfamiliar front 3, and had to risk paying a lot of players forward to get their goals. Meaning that their defence was left open and they would get caught on the break (which happened). Providing Loew plays Gomez and one of Podolski/Muller/ Reus, I think the Germans defence will be a lot safer in the semis

Yea the likes of Young and Rooney could be a huge threat to the Germans. I think it could be a 2-2 maybe going to penalties, providing England gets to the semis. If Italy get to the semis, Germany will have a field day

woops..i meant to say its not as great now as it once was..still on par with englands tho and more than a match for germany. Rooney and young are more talented than podolski/muller/gomez/klose imo and are more likely to score against italy than the germans

Alba and Boeteng plus three 4.0ers deadweight benchwarmers. That's all that's needed from now on in defence. There won't be any clean sheets so pick your two defenders from GER and SPN.

    Job done.

portugal will get a cs vs spain - forget bookmakers odds - Portugal will dominate that game and spain wont get the opportunites they have gotten v other teams. I will have rui patricio and 3 portuguese defenders. Not to mention the amount of RBs Pepe will have v spain - maybee the first to reach 15 in a game in this tourney.

dominate? U think portugal will dominate spain? Lol. Maybe spain will get less chances (personally i think they will get more due to portugals average midfield) but spain will dominate against every team in existence. Portugal sat back against germany in the first game, as they will against spain but spain are much, much better at breaking a team down than germany and will win with ease imo

agreed. so its a probably 460 vs 433. pretty sure 6 spanish midfielders will run circles around the 3 portuguese mids as ronaldo and nani don't defend. then they will do some nice combination play and beat the backline too. sure maybe ronaldo can hit them on the break for a goal which is why he will be in my team but don't see portugal doing much more than that

I think you're wrong on just about every count.

Portugal will not dominate the game. 3 Portuguese defenders is foolish, and Katsouranis got 15 recovered balls against Germany...

to each his own - Portugal clearly the better side - and Portuguese midfield has been playing exceptionally - perhaps not fantasy wise, but exceptional nonetheless. Spain will be pressed high, and the difference between Portugal and these other teams is that when Spain lose the ball and press to get it back - Portugese midfielders have the skill to keep the ball and find the right passes. Will be a very long day for Spain, mark my words.

What happens if Spain get through and Germany get through?

Can you field a full XI with 4 transfers?

Ask the same two questions, but swap the SF teams. You'll find the best way is to choose one team to progress in one half, and split the two teams in the next half. That way, you get a full XI as long as the team you backed fully to get to the final succeeds.

maybee its all the hype around spain, but I hope everyone ahead of me sticks with spanish players for the semis. I can see a big win for Portugal, along the lines of 2 or 3 to zero. Spain very strong in some areas, but Portugal has the perfect balance to take control of the game - they will exploit on the wings, prob oliveira up top to hold the ball and induce some pace to the position. Portuguese midfield most underrated of tourney - Moutinho and Veloso especially have been excelent - Pepe has miraculously learned how to defend without being dirty - only has 1 foul the entire tourney and no cards. Coentrao playing an amazingly balanced game, and Bruno Alves is in the form that has made him so popular at Porto. The spanish look good controlling the ball, but they will be pressed high and will not have the stamina that the portugues players will bring to the match. The last friendly, Portugal won 4-1 - I dont expect 4 goals, but a CS is very possible against this spanish side. Portugal is the most evolved team in the tourney and is peaking at the right time. Ronaldo determined to make his world class impact, and the supporting cast are playing their A games. Portugal all the way - look the most convincing to me by far.

Like this one more, mainly due to the omission of any England or Italy players. However, I am a bit concerned about the triple Portugal defense. But I also suspect that this is how you have to roll if you want to take not hits for the final.

Not a silly question at all. I'm leaving 4 x 4.0ers in my team and just buying the best that money can buy. Only two active defenders needed. I take the view that it's a GER/SPN final so will invest accordingly. Good luck.
