Is it time to sell Antonio and Benrahma in FPL?

We start our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Everton v West Ham United.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here.

EVERTON 0-1 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goals: Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m)
  • Bonus (projected): Ogbonna x3, Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) x2, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) x1, Ben Johnson (£3.9m) x1

ANTONIO AND BENRAHMA BLANK

After Michail Antonio (£8.1m) and Said Benrahma (£6.6m) failed to deliver an attacking return for their second and third consecutive matches respectively, is it perhaps time to sell the West Ham duo?

Antonio is currently the most-selected forward in FPL, and is also the second highest-scoring player in his position, averaging 7.1 points per match.

However, at Goodison Park on Sunday, the 31-year-old picked up a needless early yellow card for simulation and looked off the pace in front of goal, despite registering three shots in the box.

There is also a demanding UEFA Europa League campaign to navigate, plus a particularly testing forthcoming Premier League schedule (see below). In fact, between Gameweeks 9 and 15, the Hammers’ sit second-bottom of our season ticker for fixture difficulty.

With the likes of Callum Wilson (£7.3m) now back on the FPL radar following his goal in Gameweek 8, plus Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) embarking on kinder runs of fixtures, there is an argument to move on.

Despite that, and as highlighted by Neale in his recent ‘Is Michail Antonio a fixture-proof pick in FPL?’ article, he does have a decent record against the traditional Premier League elite, while his next opponents – Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa – haven’t exactly been watertight at the back in recent matches.

That does suggest that selling right now probably isn’t a priority, but his performances moving forward should of course be monitored closely.

As for Benrahma, it’s now just one goal in the last six Gameweeks, and during that time he has been outperformed by team-mate Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m), both in terms of FPL points and the underlying numbers.

Said Benrahma (left) v Jarrod Bowen (right) Gameweeks 3 to 8

With Raphinha (£6.6m) available at the same price, plus cheaper options like Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) emerging, moving Benrahma on certainly looks like a viable option right now.

Elsewhere, Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) had a goal disallowed for offside, while Angelo Ogbonna’s (£5.0m) headed winner from a Bowen corner again highlighted how effective David Moyes’ side have been from dead-ball situations since his appointment.

EVERTON STRUGGLE IN THE FINAL-THIRD

In a game low on quality, Everton lost their first home match of the season after three consecutive wins, with the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£7.4m) felt up front.

With limited attacking options in reserve, their return can’t come soon enough for the Toffees’, who have now scored just three goals in their last four matches, and worryingly, have registered just nine shots on target and 3.95 non-penalty expected goals (xG) during that time.

In the battle of the budget midfielders, Demarai Gray (£5.8m) put in a couple of teasing balls into the box that Calvert-Lewin would surely have taken advantage of had he been fit, while Andros Townsend (£5.6m) failed to register a single effort on goal, but did whip in 11 crosses, five of which were successful.

Next up for Everton is a home match against Watford, before their fixtures toughen significantly after, with back-to-back games against Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Tottenham Hotspur (h), Manchester City (a), Brentford (a), Liverpool (h) and Arsenal (h) right up until Gameweek 15.

INJURY LATEST

Vladimir Coufal (£4.9m) failed to recover from the groin injury that kept him out of international duty, and was replaced by Ben Johnson (£3.9m) in West Ham’s starting XI at right-back.

Prior to the match, Moyes said:

“He’s just had an injury which he picked up in the Cup game against Manchester United, and he’s never really been right since then. He played against Leeds after it, but is just not quite right.”

As for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, Rafa Benitez revealed in his post-match interview that the Brazilian was the closer of the two to making a comeback.

Everton XI: Pickford, Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne, Townsend, Doucoure, Allan, Iwobi (Gordon 79), Gray, Rondon

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Soucek (Dawson 79), Rice, Bowen (Yarmolenko 90+4), Benrahma (Lanzini 87), Fornals, Antonio

There just does not seem to be another forward in Antonio's price range or lower that is going to do any better and have DCL so just going to ride it out with Antonio.

Toney has great fixtures but Antonio is far more explosive.

I’d actually say Toney will do good over these forthcoming fixtures, I’m considering doing:

Ronaldo + Sarr > Toney + Son for a hit

If Jiminez explodes and Antonio doesn't and their fixtures would you still feel the same? 🙂

      Jimenez possibly, better fixtures.
Thinking of benching Antonio for Liverpool & City games in that run?

Antonio quite fixture proof anyway, last returned vs.

      Burnley x3
      Arsenal x3
      Manchester City x2
      West Brom x2
      Aston Villa x2
      Leicester City x1
      Tottenham x1
      Crystal Palace x1

None of those teams are in the upcoming fixtures.

The real issue isnt who they play in the prem, but how much less training time they get with so many European games

yeah, even just as a short term option for the next 4. You imagine he can't be dropped for Burnley after scoring on his first start.

Just seeing what I can get for my dosh if I hit the WC:

    0.1 ITB

    Raya Foster
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell White Livra
Salah Raph Sarr (placeholder atm) Mbeumo Brownhill
    Vardy Lukaku Toney

7 changes from my current team. Antonio can be squeezed in if I do Toney, Sarr, Chilwell to Antonio, ESR, Christensen (but means very inflexible mid).

On to something here or just a Sunday night kneejerk?

Going Vardy over Trollaku as my CR7 escape route, so make captain next week less obvious.

Salah's not got the best record vs United but he's in the form of his life.

Anyone else stand out as an option?

      Kane scored against Newcastle 🙂

Lakaku will score against Norwich and Newcastle, maybe Burnley, Leicester, Man U, and will score against Watford, that's the fixtures we target isn't it? Southampton and Brentford have surprised everyone defensively and Liverpool, and Man City are not the easiest.

I say for all the Lukaku sellers go for it, even for Vardy!

Vardy has better fixtures and is constantly scoring even when leicester have been poor whereas lukaku has been none existent. I am going to hold for now but if he doesnt return/outperform vardy in the next two fixtures I will get rid for vardy and will look to bring son in with that extra 1.5m

Would appreciate thoughts on the below moves. I might have to do B tonight if that is the best option as only 0.1 spare and Vardy Mbuemo could both rise tonight.

    A: Greenwood ASM > Son Hwang (0.4)
    B: Greenwood ASM > Mbuemo Vardy (0.1)
    C: Greenwood Semedo > Foden Chilwell (0.6)

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Cancelo Semedo White Liv
    Salah Greenwood Raph Gray McArthur
    Lukaku Antonio ASM

Did Ron, Alonso, Semedo > Vardy, Chilwell, TAA for -8 to give me

    Sanchez
    TAA Dias Chilwell
    Salah Benrahma Gallagher Saar
    Jimenez Lukaku Vardy

    Subs: Liv White Bissouma

Feel like some times it’s best to just pull the trigger and fix issues rather than deal with them slowly with free transfers - thoughts?

Agree with the decision, sometimes its best to just est the hit and have the team that you want.

They're all upgrades and you'll make the points back in my opinion.

Good moves, I find it hard going beyond a 4 point hit personally so I probably would have just done 1 or 2 of those moves this week, but long term they are all good decisions imo so you'll get those points back. Any thoughts on mine above?

Try to avoid going beyond 4 typically myself to be honest.

Tricky decision for your options, I’d probably lean towards B, but only just.

I think I'm thinking the same. Hate being forced into an early transfer though, but if they both rise tonight I lose that option. B can be a switch to A in three GWs time anyways when Spurs fixture run starts. I think C is probably my least favourite because they're both rotation risks

Bear in mind all 3 you are transferring in could play midweek, would wait if not priced out

    Ronaldo > Kane in FanTeam?

I already have Lukaku and Antonio. Or do I go Vardy? I kinda like Kane since I'd want him anyway in a few weeks' time for their run in 12.

Not necessarily no. Periphery players and a couple of starting 11 could do with changing up but spine of the team is fine imo. Sanchez not ideal this week but a decent keeper long term. Cancelo, White, Livra a solid back 3 this week. A lot of people lost all faith in Jota following Firmino haul but I wouldn't write him off just yet. Sarr, Ben, Antonio & Toney are fine this week. Ronaldo to Lukaku a popular move you could consider then upgrade Shaw or one of your mids next week perhaps.

Well presumably the logic is you captain Alonso and if he doesn't feature, Chilwell plays and becomes your VC. But if Alonso gets brought on for a 1 minute cameo, you get a 1 point captain. Though to be fair I think he brings on James more than he does Chilwell and Alonso off the bench...

That’s a bit nuts to do that Gink. Two players from the same team is always a risk, especially with the rotation. I understand that you believe one of them will play but I can’t see it not backfiring.

That title actually really winds me up tbh

Firstly - putting “Antonio” & “sell” in the same sentence is a bit naughty when you look at his overalll cord since his lightbulb moment 18 months ago in Feb’20

Secondly - it’s just really, really clickbaity

And thirdly, it’s from Tom, who is far, far better than a title like that - in fairness he may have had nothing to do with title, but he’s still way above that type of lowest common denominator/tabloid type stuff

Just my two cents, hopefully I don’t get disciplined for voicing my opinion

(I read the article & agree with the TLDR of “selling Antonio is bananas, selling Benrahma makes sense”)

Ronaldo to Vardy and Benrahma to Mbuemo? -4. Would free up the cash to bring back Trent the week after.
Other option is Ronaldo and Benrahma to Jesus and Son?

You haven’t mentioned money but monitor Chelsea and maybe get TAA. We should destroy UTD. Can imagine Ole getting sacked ala Mourinho if it happens.

True, but I think Ole’s P45 may be later on - Arsenal at Old Trafford in 6 weeks time looks the one (it’s going to be ending a run that starts with Liverpool this weekend, and also contains, city, Spurs, Chelsea, Atalanta twice, and Villarreal)

And gives whoever the caretaker is an astoundingly soft run of fixtures to bounce through to Christmas

Because he could easily score a brace in any game. Ronaldo is one of the best players in the league and can still perform in a team that's underperforming. There aren't many premium strikers who are really shining so I'm happy to keep

Depends on the type of blanks - were they good blanks or bad blanks

Good blanks - as many as they want/need

Bad blanks - 3 to 4 minimum, 5 to 6 maximum, in most cases

    3. Forza

Depends on context and fixtures - it's madness to sell Lukaku (4 blanks in a row) but sensible to sell Benrahma (3 blanks in a row).
