Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.3m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m), Harry Kane (£12.1m), Son Heung-min (£10.1m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.0m), Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) | Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Kane
  • Own goals: Eric Dier (£4.6m)
  • Red cards: Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Wilson x2

KANE ENDS PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL DROUGHT

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 1

Having failed to score in any of his opening six Premier League appearances in 2021/22, Harry Kane (£12.1m) finally ended his goal drought against Newcastle United in Gameweek 8.

The England captain looked much more like his old self at St James’ Park, and resumed his link up with Son Heung-min (£10.1m) with an assist for the third goal. As a result, he bagged maximum bonus and ended the match with an impressive 12-point haul for his small army of owners.

Given Spurs’ next three fixtures – West Ham United (a), Manchester United (h) and Everton (a) – we perhaps have a little while longer to scout Kane’s performances, before his fixtures ease considerably between Gameweeks 12 and 15.

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 2

Interestingly, that also coincides with trickier runs for premium forwards Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), which may be a switch worth considering closer to the time, depending on how each of them perform during the coming weeks that is.

Son Heung-min, meanwhile, was once again on the scoresheet, and has now produced six attacking returns in just seven Premier League appearances this season.

NDOMBELE’S INFLUENCE

Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m) fired in Spurs’ opener on Sunday, and impressed in his more advanced central role.

During the match, he registered five goal attempts and four shots in the box, more than any other player on the pitch. His 36 final-third touches – including nine in the penalty box – were also match-leading totals, and highlight his growing influence in Nuno Espirito Santo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s average touch map v Newcastle United in Gameweek 8, featuring no. 28 Tanguy Ndombele

It’s also worth noting that since Oliver Skipp’s (£4.5m) return to the starting XI in Gameweek 7, Spurs have looked a lot better defensively, something Nuno touched on in his post-match interview when discussing his new midfield set-up:

“It worked really well. We were able to be more solid in the middle of the park with Skipp and Hojbjerg being side by side, although we still allowed one of them to have freedom to support in attack. It was the same idea but a little bit different and it worked better.”

WILSON BACK ON THE FPL RADAR

Newcastle’s new era got off to a disappointing start at St James’ Park, but the return of talisman Callum Wilson (£7.3m) from injury was a real positive.

It took the 29-year-old just two minutes to find the back of the net, as he ended the match with a goal, two bonus and eight FPL points.

As for the Magpies, the reality is that the club remain without a win this season and now sit 19th in the table. They also have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 19 goals so far, while the underlying numbers are equally as bad.

MetricTotalRank v other Premier League teams
Goals conceded1920th
Clean sheets019th=
Shots conceded12918th
Shots in the box conceded7214th
Shots on target conceded4219th
Big chances conceded2220th
xGC15.2420th
Non-penalty xGC12.8717th

Encouragingly for their FPL owners, the likes of Conor Gallagher (£5.7m), Romelu LukakuIvan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) all take on the Magpies’ in the coming weeks.

“We were certainly beaten by the better team. After a wonderful start, unfortunately the problems that we’ve had for a while now defensively was there for everyone to see. The goals we gave away, you could say it was a lot of good play from Tottenham, but our defending left a lot to be desired to say the least.

I think we’ve started a few games like that – we’ve got off to a good start, we’ve scored and got our noses in front, but unfortunately at the moment, we’re not able to defend well enough as a team. I’m not criticising the back four or the midfield players, football is a team game, but from front to back at the moment, we’re not defending well enough.

We have tried to change and be a little bit more on the front foot, but it’s difficult because you cannot keep having to score three goals to win a match.” – Steve Bruce

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Longstaff (Shelvey 60), Willock (Murphy 77), Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson (Fraser 77)

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Royal, Romero, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Moura, Son, Kane

Is Salah the most owner player ever at 64%? It’s crazy, that must be pretty much everyone who is still playing the game

Imo you need a cleanup, but starting with united assets probably wise.
Lukaku is a must simply cause of ownership, unless you want an extremely risky punt i would not go without him.

thanks mate totally agree about a clean up but feel 2 FT should be OK short term and keeping my WC.. will go Lukaku + prob Dias as less risk of rotating comapred to Cancello?

I was only being confident otherwise I would not have picked him, would I? One would have expected that with Spurs defence.

Clearly not the case as he is blanking left right and centre.

                So whoopy do for you.

Did you have him GW4? Now many are only rushing to get him for Norwich.

I've had him since GW2. No issues with wanting your team to do well, just maybe chill on acting like you know better than others and that they're foolish to think a player might do well when you thought they would for many weeks before that

I got Lukaku and Ronaldo in for GW5 because he scored a brace vs Villa.

Nothing wrong with him expecting to score a hattie vs Spurs is there.

Think you need to go bark up another tree.

Everything is a risk, right? Going Conservative with sure starters and steady picks still holds risk that the more explosive players don't score more cumulatively. Balance and timing is the million dollar question!

Very small margains . Sarr was so close to getting that consolation goal against Liverpool - that would have meant a decent little green arrow

    Need advice here,
Assuming that all my outfield players are good enough,
My current GKs are Sanchez and (4.0). Since Brighton play City and Pool next, I want to bring in Pickford this GW with my FT. Should I do:
    A) Sanchez -> Pickford
    B) 4.0 -> Pickford?

B makes more sense if I still have my wildcard, right?

I'm weighing up between the three at the moment, leaning Kane at the moment.

Would mean no Son and for my team at least, don't need the money in midfield due to the likes of Mbuemo, Raph etc.

If you're definitely moving him out then I'd go Vardy. I got rid last week but might move Antonio to Vardy next week for Arsenal and then Leeds and take stock after that. Kane, maybe I'm wrong but I'm still not convinced. Newcastle are atrocious so even with his poor form I still expected him to score

Andy is right. You have to avoid the depression for the possible gold in Citeh and Chelski defense. Are we not chasing the ace when it comes to these guys? Do we suffer the impatience of wanting to change them on their first fail. Reece James hurt me this week but hopefully not too many sub appearances and at 5.5, can you find better value?

Is this a WC? Suspect McArthur is a dicey 4.5 assuming you want someone nailed midterm. Eze is due back fairly soon - perhaps after next IB - and that will create a logjam in Palace midfield with Gallagher McArthur and Eze likely fighting for 2 spots.

My team with WC already done:
      same Foster

      same same Mbueno same
      same Kaku Jimenez
      Foster Tierney same Mcarthur

Not a fan of Christensen but looks really solid.

Imminent fixtures much better for Chelsea than Liverpool of course but midterm I think there is nothing in it and Matip is as nailed and probably more so. You lose the Pool Chelsea City split of course but although I'm on Chelsea defence I don't really like it much right now.

      Just a thought.

Thinking I might WC now. What you guys think? Only downside is I have 2FTs. But the bulk of the team is bad!

    Sanchez
    Rüdiger. TAA. White
    Salah. Mount. Raph. Sarr
    Ronaldo. Antonio. ASM
    (Foster, Shaw, Livramento, Gilmour)

Any of those 4 can still score.
          Ronaldo is Ronaldo
Mount will start to get more gametime. Kaku needs him.
Sarr talisman but maybe move him now.
Shaw loves it against Trent history says

Other option is to drop Sarr to Mbeumo to afford Son and Vardy?

      1. blakey20

I wouldn't do that for minus 4 as you have Livramento on your bench who could easily pick up 6 points.

With Chelsea's next three fixtures I wouldn't touch Mount as there is a good chance he plays. If I had your team I would do Ronaldo and Shaw to Lukaku and Chilwell/James (depending on mid-week game).

Like Mbeumo alot but that is a transfer you don't need to make this week and could make next week.

I think Lukaku is due. I Don't think he will haul because of tuchels playing style but atleast 1 goal i am expecting.

Utd might fight back as they will play their arch rival. You know what happens between spurs arsenal. No matter how bad arsenal is they fight hard against spurs.

The problem with Lukaku is that Chelsea never look like they will thump anyone. The chances of big hauls from Lukaku look slim due to their playing style. They have an xG of under 13 in their opening 8 games - Liverpool have almost 23, Citeh over 18.

      1. blakey20
        • 4 Years

Chelsea have also had some difficult fixtures in their first 8 games. They now play the bottom three teams in the table! I will be buying in Lukaku this gameweek and am very glad he has blanked and people are now looking at Vardy and Kane. If Lukaku gets 2-3 goals over the next three gameweeks then it is job done.
