Who are the best Romelu Lukaku replacements in FPL?

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) is poised to miss Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after injuring his ankle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League win over Malmo.

Thomas Tuchel may give us a more exact prognosis on the Belgian’s fitness in Friday’s pre-match press conference but the premium FPL forward is seemingly set to sit out Saturday’s home fixture against Norwich City at the very least, with the Chelsea boss saying Lukaku would miss “some games”.

Over three million Fantasy bosses owned the Belgium international after Gameweek 8 but the mass exodus has begun, with around 400,000 of those having already ditched him at the time of writing.

So who are the best replacements for the injured Lukaku in FPL?

We take a look at the options available to Fantasy managers in the article below.

All our stats and graphics are taken from our Premium Members Area, where there is currently a seven-day free trial on offer.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: PREMIUM FORWARDS

JAMIE VARDY

Vardy on target again as Man Utd's defensive issues continue in Gameweek 8 2

Top among FPL forwards for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 9, Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) is the go-to Lukaku replacement for many Fantasy managers.

It’s not so much the immediate fixtures – Brentford (a), Arsenal (h), Leeds (a) and Chelsea (h) is a mixed bag over the next four Gameweeks – as the form, with Vardy now the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer after scoring on five occasions in his last four appearances.

Some of us may have wanted to wait for Gameweek 13 and a ticker-topping four-game stretch for Leicester City but moving for Vardy now at least saves a transfer further down the line, and opposition difficulty doesn’t seem to be much of a barrier to the veteran hitman anyway: last season, for example, he bagged 10 goals and assists combined in 12 fixtures against the ‘big six’ sides.

It’s true that 50% of his attacking returns this season have come against Norwich City and Burnley, two of the weakest defences in the division.

And the return to the starting XI of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.0m) is also worth monitoring, as the Nigerian was the bigger goal threat of the two when Brendan Rodgers paired them up top towards the final third of last season.

Vardy hasn’t been adversely affected so far, with totals of six shots and five attempts in the box in the last two Gameweeks in keeping with his output in 2021/22 before that, and it has been Iheanacho who has been playing slightly wider and deeper.

Above: Touch heatmaps for Vardy (left) and Iheanacho (right) over the last two Gameweeks

One word of caution for medium-term holders of Vardy is that the 34-year-old striker is currently enjoying midweek breathers in the UEFA Europa League to aid with his recovery between league games. More Premier League matches replace those European nights throughout November and December, with nine top-flight games to contest in the space of 35 days from Gameweeks 13-21. The Leicester striker may not escape a benching or two over that period, then, but the same could be argued for huge swathes of the FPL players in our teams.

HARRY KANE

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

The August curse extended to mid-October this year, with Harry Kane (£12.1m) only opening his Premier League account in last week’s win over Newcastle United.

As is the case with Vardy, it’s not until next month that Spurs’ fixtures really leap off the page – a four-match period from Gameweeks 12-15 looking like the ideal time to pounce on the Lilywhites.

Kane’s extra cost is the main deterrent considering that Vardy and an alternative route into the Spurs attack, Son Heung-min (£10.1m), can be snapped up for some £1.5m-£2.0m less.

Kane’s underlying stats have really stepped up a gear over the last four Gameweeks, as he’s joint-top among FPL forwards for shots alongside Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Vardy.

While plenty of those efforts are coming from distance, the typically dead-eyed Kane has still had more shots on target than any of his positional rivals – and the same number of big chances as Ronaldo.

Still, Son is outgunning Kane for big chances, shots in the box and expected goal involvement (xGI) even over this four-match period, so justifying that extra £2.0m outlay if it’s a ‘one or the other’ dilemma is not easy.

THE OTHERS

Cristiano Ronaldo dominates his premium peers stats-wise over the course of the season but some stiff fixtures, not to mention United’s iffy form and inability to carve out a single ‘big chance’ for him over the last three Gameweeks, leads us away from the veteran Portuguese.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) is arguably the pick of the rest from the premium pool. Having found the net in each of his last three appearances at the Emirates, the Gabon international and his Gunners teammates have four more very favourable home encounters against Aston Villa, Watford, Newcastle and Southampton between now and Gameweek 16.

Trips to Leicester and Manchester United needn’t be feared from a defensive perspective either, with those two hapless backlines on just one clean sheet apiece in 2021/22.

A lack of big chances this season (two, fewer than 17 other forwards) is the main downside and he’s having to rely on his historically strong goal conversion rate to maintain his output. A possible recall for Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) would also presumably see Aubameyang shunted to the left flank, as has happened many times before.

Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m) is being routinely overlooked by many of us, with the week-to-week rotation risk and a ‘reverse out of position’ tag cited as the main reasons. And yet, despite registering fewer minutes than 15 other FPL forwards, he is still third among players in his Fantasy position for points.

The no-shows and one-pointers will be as regular as the double-digit hauls, nevertheless still resulting in a decent points-per-match average (Jesus’s is currently 5.90). Strong benches will be needed to negotiate those rests, so with many of us taking punts on rotation risks such as Phil Foden (£8.0m), Reece James (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.7m), the Man City man may be one gamble too many.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: MID-PRICE/BUDGET FORWARDS

IVAN TONEY

Toney off the mark as injuries and Covid impact Villa 4

Lukaku’s injury doesn’t just allow FPL managers to move sideways between premium forwards but downgrade to a mid-price or budget option in order to reallocate funds elsewhere, perhaps with a view to recruiting Son, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) or the man who looks set to lead Chelsea’s line in Lukaku and Timo Werner‘s (£8.6m) absences, the ‘out of position’ Kai Havertz (£8.1m).

One such cut-price striker is Ivan Toney (£6.4m), whose Brentford side sit top of our Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 18.

I would use some of your change to make Broja your third forward. You will have benching headaches from time to time but my bench is getting more use than ever this season.

Just think that 0.9 may be handy and downgrading him would required FT in the future, tough call tbh!

I have almost exactly the same team. Currently trying to decide between Haveretz & Broja and Raphinha & Antonio.

Would be an easy decision if the fixtures for both Haveretz and Raphinha wouldn't be so tempting for the next couple of GW.

That was my thinking as well, but I can also see him scoring somewhat consistently for the next 10 GW. Hard to say.

I have Rudiger instead of Azpi and considering Broja instead of the 4.4. Don't have TAA either though I don't know if that's the right call.

                • 9 Years
                2 years, 5 months ago

Sounds the same as mine, if I take out TAA I have:
                Raya, Foster
                Manquillo, Chilwell, Rüdiger, Cancelo, Livra
                Mbeumo, Kai, Raph, Salah, Son
                Vardy, Antonio, 4.4

but thinking of swapping Antonio & 4.4 to Toney & Hwang, or Toney & Broja and upgrade Manquillo

I'm also on WC, & v similar setup to you at the moment

He's a really explosive player but I think Ralph is playing him in the wrong position. Is a lot more threatening as a second striker than he is as a winger.

        1. Thomas Magnum
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah I agree I've heard how well he does for Norway but hasn't seemed to get it going so far but playing oop would explain it. Really not many nailed on players at the 5.6 or less range other than him so may have to go him by default and hopes he keeps his minutes up even with pressure from other players

Yes I was tempted as well, I think he can be a fantastic differential. He's really good as 2nd striker in a 442 or in a front 3 using a 433. Unfortunately, Ralph plays a 442 and uses him on the wing, which clearly does not play to his strengths

      1. TheTinman

I think Salah has a higher ceiling. I trust Liverpool attack to score more goals than Chelsea, 'almost' no matter what the fixture is

        1. Bennerman
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

This is the issue that exposes the 'ceiling' fallacy/nonsense.

What you're both saying is 'potential to score more points in my opinion'.

Which is the obvious fundamental criteria that underlies every choice, and has done since fantasy football was first conceived, and always will.

Just trendy to throw the word 'ceiling' in

          1. Goonsquad245
            • 7 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

Good post. The only scenario where ‘ceiling’ is a thing is where someone like Coady literally never gets forward and therefore it’s a fairly safe bet his ‘ceiling’ is 9 points.

When we’re talking about salah and havertz, neither player has a ‘ceiling’ of any consequence

    3. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

      The train's leaving the station...

My only issue with this is that Man U is currently a worse defence than Norwich, on "last 4" stats, and Fred - their only thing close to a proper DM atm - isn't fit

So Havertz's upside is pretty much matched by Salah's, if not beaten

But on paper, Norwich will always look easier than Man U. There's also the chance of Ole parking the bus successfully to avoid yet another embarrassment, but that's what Norwich has done recently to stem their tide

Also, Tuchel's current system doesn't feed the ST, but uses 'em like Giroud/Firmino. Maybe the forced formation switch to 3-4-3 will end this madness

      1. El Presidente
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, good points thanks. Also, one thing that is itching me is the fact that he has to play a totally new attacking formation with Lukaku and Werner out, and those players have no routine together.

Got a real benching headache this week, got to bench 2:

    1) Diaz away to Brighton (have Cancelo starting)
    2) Mbeumo home to Leicester
    3) Rodrigo home to Wolves
    4) Livramento home to Burnley

Currently benching Rodrigo & Livramento, Rodrigo was a couple of week punt before getting Toney btw if anyones wondering why the hell I have him!

Rodrigo 1000% percent - just check out his last games stats...woeful
Livramento - is a good 1st def bench choice , id prefer mbuemo lad to tease the lie def

I’m going son and Toney as I want one mid and one striker.

Would you rather captain son or Kane (wk 12 onwards)?

If the answer is Kane go Kane.

    The havertz punt?

    1. A gormless Ill conceived over excited punt where buyers suddenly expect a haul from a player who has done nothing all season … where come the final whistle there will be tears and frustrated cries of ‘why … why do I never learn’ and ‘how do I get this sack of sheeeeeeet out of my team’ …..

    2. The stars did align and thank you for the haul ….

No. I like it. I want to do it too. But arsenal is unpredictable at this moment. So not sure what to do

      Fair shout

Arsenal looking very dull in attack is main objection but he's ticking over quite okay. And I suppose it's a worry that Laca was their most likely attacker after the first 15 minutes last time out.

Doubt it given Saka was been pictured in training but must be reasonable chance that Laca gets serious minutes some time soon. Auba wider is not a bad thing practically speaking.

Main worry for me is that Arsenal feel a bit like a one goal team - the Spurs performance a one off?

      No

Yep he's looking a good pick - sub 10.0 is the price tag has Auba needed for a while to take the pressure of him as an FPL asset imo

Pens are always a bonus, and he has form on his side (home at least) with goals and baps in each of his last 3x home games

Also has that bit of Je Ne Sais Quoi / Va-Va-Voom pedigree - there have been times when Auba has been a 10/10 world class terrifyingly unplayable forward - though not so much of that in the last 18-24 months admittedly - but the high ceiling is definitely there

And he's not a 1 week wonder like Havertz either - if he blanks vs. Villa he's not an ultra-urgent sell with more half-decent fixtures in the pipeline

      Very decent pick imo

Can troll so hard too though, so just be prepared for all eventualities

Sounds like everyone is going along with this but..

    Lukaku to Vardy
Raph to Havertz worth a -4 hit

Been reluctant to take a hit this season and it’s worked out well so far, if I don’t take the hit my bench options are Doug Luiz ESR and Tierney?

    Please help?

Raph out involving hit sounds not like the best idea? And Havertz is a very short term and not any other reason to get is Norwich? Maybe if it were Sarr or someone like that, maybe worth taking a chance.

    Mendy
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo
Salah (c) Havertz Son Raphina, Townsend
    Toney Hwang

    Subs: Sanchez, Jansen, Liv, Pukki

    Bank 0.6 remaining.

    Wildcard Active.

Feel my strikers are far to weak. I do have got Son rather than Kane.

I could downgrade Havertz for Antonio/Jesus but possibly when Lukaku return.

    Ideas welcome.

Would you switch Ronaldo to Jesus or Aubameyang for a hit?

It could pay back in 1 or Ronaldo may have his tail back up and firing against Liverpool.

All 3 could easily return points.
