The spot-kicks have been despatched, the Fantasy clean sheets are in the bag and Italy, deservedly, have clinched a place in the last four against Germany on Thursday evening. Now we have a three-day break in proceedings before Spain square up to Portugal on Wednesday and, with eight free transfers available to Fantasy managers in the McDonaldโ€™s game, plenty of options are being assessed prior to the 7.30pm deadline on June 27:

With so many doubts over who will lead the line for the defending champions, last-minute transfers are likely to come into play on Wednesday. The teams will be announced prior to the deadline, affording Fantasy managers the chance to tinker with their lineups before deciding on final selections.

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have started two games apiece in the middle of the attacking three and both have returned two goals thus far โ€“ whoever gets the nod against Paulo Bentoโ€™s side will surely see a flurry of transfers before 7.30pm. David Silva looks the only real secure starter of Spainโ€™s classified forwards in the McDonaldโ€™s game but has failed to produce any returns in his last couple of appearances. Xabi Alonsoโ€™s brace against France will see him pick up plenty interest, while Andres Iniestaโ€™s owners are desperate for an upturn in performance, bearing in mind the midfielder has provided just a single assist over the tournament to date. Turning to the backline, and Jordi Alba in particular, could prove dividend โ€“ the left-back is the highest scoring player in the McDonaldโ€™s game and rolls up on the back of a 10 point haul against the French.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious option for Portugal. Three goals in his last two games attests to his current form, with the 11.0 priced forward also hitting the woodwork a total of four times against Holland and Czech Republic. Up against Real Madrid team mate Alvaro Arbeloa on the flank, he has the potential to cause the Spaniards plenty of problems if Portugal can get their counter attack game working as they did against the Dutch. Nani is more of a differential with 14% ownership to Ronaldoโ€™s 42% and has provided a pair of assists so far, while Hugo Almeida is likely to lead the line in light of Helder Postigaโ€™s hamstring injury. Joao Moutinho has also matched Naniโ€™s attacking returns, while Pepeโ€™s resilience at the back, in addition to a goal against Denmark, has earned him 20 points, the same amount as Ronaldo.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I kind of want Portugal to turn Spain over. That Germany vs Spain final just seems so predictable whereas Portugal seem to be the loose cannon who can shake things up a bit.

O.K....we lost the game...deserved to be honest, we tried but on the night we just didn't have it.

So looking forward to the future and the SF.

Trying to get 11 players seems to be harder than I thought.

Going with 2 from Italy - Pirlo as he is just class and a possible assist merchant from set pieces, Abate as he looked good down the right tonight, although wasn't really challenged too often.

3 from Portugal - Gotta have CR7 and someone to assist the guy of course.

3 from Spain - Sticking with Silva but got to let Iniesta go now, been holding on too long with a return.

3 from Germany - Sticking with Gomez (L know he is expensive but I think he'll be back and gagging to prove his worth for a starting place for the final) and you gotta have Ozil, right?

    So my final team is:

    Patricio

    Abate, Boateng, J Alba

    Moutinho, Busquets, Ozil, Pirlo

    Gomez, Silva, CR7

    0.3 in the bank.

Let me know what you guys think as gonna confirm team in the morning before the price hike hits.

    Thanks in advance,

Mini-league rival has Hart, I have Pirlo, and I support England. 0-0 then losing on penalties was literally the only situation where I lost in all ways!

Think my planning ahead should help me catch up those 7 points on him for the final two rounds as he only has one outfield 'filler' 4.0m player, so I'll be able to make up some points by buying more of the better players without taking hits. In theory...

I believe England go as far as they could with the available players. I am not disappointed and we lost to the better team.

I think Roy's done a great job under the circumstances and I think we will improve once he gets a proper amount of time to indoctrinate our players. He certainly made a difference to us and we kept two high-quality teams out.

What I would like to see now as the new generation of players with more continental training come through, is a move away from rigid three-line 4-4-2 to a four-line 4-2-3-1 system. The problem with England's passing is the massive gaps between the lines that reduce passing options, make every pass a gamble and make consistent triangular interplay impossible.

We could still preserve our tried and tested defending in two lines of four, the only difference would be that the wide players come forward to form a front three when we gain possession.

We saw this to great effect in the classy two goals we scored in the Holland friendly, though our defending was poor. If we could keep Roy's defending and pass like that, we could start heading somewhere.

Exactly, bingo, he should always be the man in the hole. He did actually drop deep quite a lot in this match - out of desperation to get on the ball I think - but did not consistently play in the hole. Far too many times it was a flat front two.

Walcott did okay given his time, at least he tried to keep the ball and take it to dangerous places.

I respect Parker's workrate but he charges around too much without intelligence, composure or reliable passing.

Young keeps disappearing in big games and has never been much of a world-beater anyway.

I'd look for a fluid front six like this:
        ...................Welbeck
        ......Ox.......Rooney.......Walcott
        ...........Gerrard.......Wilshere

With Ox and Rooney interchanging a lot - each has playmaker potential. I believe Ox will ultimately succeed Rooney when he retires.

Agree with you. I think Wilshire is the key man. If the England players feel the need to hoof they can pass it him and he will lead the way. Hopefully along the way some other players can come through who have composure on the ball.

A lot of pressure on one player who Barcelona have plenty of in their B Team.

England fans, look on the bright side. That defence will give you a chance in the next major tournament. It is a solid foundation to build a good team upon. If you can get or gamble on a couple of more technically gifted midfielders and more creative wingers, even better. Watching Pirlo's performance tonight makes me wonder how much damage a Scholes could have done in that game and others.

If we're being honest though, South Africa 2 years ago was far more disappointing. The Germany game was the lowest point, where a young experimental side essentially schooled your veterans. A lot of friends who are England supporters are saying they just feel empty and not angry or disappointed. IMO you should be pleased, things have vastly improved since that Germany game but it's almost as if some took comfort in Lampardgate after that tournament yet this time there isn't a similar scapegoat to ease the pain...

I know we're going to disagree here but....

I think it was partially co-incidence that Man U improved upon his return. At the start of the season with Anderson and Cleverly in there they did very well imo. When Scholes returned, they were both out injured and missed virtually all of the rest of the season and it was more that you had someone to play there who was actually a CM (ie. not Rooney, Giggs, Jones etc) rather than that Scholes was that brilliant.

If Anderson, Fletcher and Cleverly hadn't been unavailable, Scholes would never have been needed at all, never mind playing for England again.

I'm not saying he would have but I think he could have added more intelligence to England's passing game. Everyone else seems to just panic and try to play manic 1-2s pelting the ball at each other or failing that just pelting it up field. It's a cliché but England really need some technical players who can compete with the continental style of possession and passing.

Rooney simply isn't a striker but there is nobody better to lead the line. He is more of a false no.9 but with England he has to play right up top and the only time he has had any joy in that position is when he was being fed by the best crosser in the EPL - Valencia.

Also, he just might not be as good as most would like to believe.

Italy are in transition though, losing Canavarro, Nesta, Gattuso etc and are missing one of their best players/goalscorers in Guiseppe Rossi. I wasn't overly impressed and I fully expect them to go out now but they had enough about them against the Spanish and English to show they're doing a good job rebuilding.

Are people fielding more than 11 for the semis? Was going to try to get 12 or 13 but instead think I'm going to gamble on Germany and Spain and only have 11 active players.

if I get a 12th it'll only be Varela or Oliveira who probably won't start anyway, which I think is the same for most
