The spot-kicks have been despatched, the Fantasy clean sheets are in the bag and Italy, deservedly, have clinched a place in the last four against Germany on Thursday evening. Now we have a three-day break in proceedings before Spain square up to Portugal on Wednesday and, with eight free transfers available to Fantasy managers in the McDonald’s game, plenty of options are being assessed prior to the 7.30pm deadline on June 27:

With so many doubts over who will lead the line for the defending champions, last-minute transfers are likely to come into play on Wednesday. The teams will be announced prior to the deadline, affording Fantasy managers the chance to tinker with their lineups before deciding on final selections.

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have started two games apiece in the middle of the attacking three and both have returned two goals thus far – whoever gets the nod against Paulo Bento’s side will surely see a flurry of transfers before 7.30pm. David Silva looks the only real secure starter of Spain’s classified forwards in the McDonald’s game but has failed to produce any returns in his last couple of appearances. Xabi Alonso’s brace against France will see him pick up plenty interest, while Andres Iniesta’s owners are desperate for an upturn in performance, bearing in mind the midfielder has provided just a single assist over the tournament to date. Turning to the backline, and Jordi Alba in particular, could prove dividend – the left-back is the highest scoring player in the McDonald’s game and rolls up on the back of a 10 point haul against the French.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious option for Portugal. Three goals in his last two games attests to his current form, with the 11.0 priced forward also hitting the woodwork a total of four times against Holland and Czech Republic. Up against Real Madrid team mate Alvaro Arbeloa on the flank, he has the potential to cause the Spaniards plenty of problems if Portugal can get their counter attack game working as they did against the Dutch. Nani is more of a differential with 14% ownership to Ronaldo’s 42% and has provided a pair of assists so far, while Hugo Almeida is likely to lead the line in light of Helder Postiga’s hamstring injury. Joao Moutinho has also matched Nani’s attacking returns, while Pepe’s resilience at the back, in addition to a goal against Denmark, has earned him 20 points, the same amount as Ronaldo.

Of those I prefer B with Torres.

I have Oliviera as a gamble. I can swap him out if he doesn't play. But you can't do the same with Gomez if Klose is closer to the starting lineup.

Everyone seemed to know we'd go to penalties today.

Earlier today I was going to put money on us winning on penalties.

Then I had a reality check and dodged that bullet.

Pirlo apparently told Italian TV after the game he took his penalty like that "to put pressure on the English takers" - that's some balls

I'm getting married on the 11th of August and then on honeymoon 13-25th. Think I'm going to sort my FPL team out on the 12th, then forget about it to ensure my marriage lasts the honeymoon...

With only 4 free transfers in the next stage, isn't it safer to go 3 players from each team. That way you are guaranteed 10 players irrespective of who goes through.

+1. You can not field 15 to the final anyway. So any budget used on players #12-15 in the SF squad will be wasted for the final round purchases. I don't want to spend any of my 4 free final round transfers downgrading extras.

I think most teams are going to hinge on the Spanish team sheet, ie will Torres play, so no point in making transfers till we know the latest.

A slightly different story at the back though as I can't decide whether to double up on Spanish or German defenders.

Spain have the more solid defence but Germany have the more defensive opponent.

Yep I was thinking 4-4-2 earlier, but I'm figuring you might as well max out on defenders from the big guns as I see little value from midfielders and forwards.

IF I know 2nd string players will start (I'm looking at you, Klose, Schurrle and Reus) then I will go for as many midfielders as I can.

cant see too many clean sheets. 4 teams tried to hold out for 90 minutes in the quarters, all 4 were knocked out

There were 4 clean sheets from 8 teams in the quarters (Spain, Portugal, Italy, England) which all were predicted to some degree, in about that order of likelihood, with the Spanish clean sheet widely expected. The only expected clean sheet that didn't happen was the German one, when they opened up in a thrashing of Greece. It will get even tighter this round. I'd say especially after watching tonight, clean sheets are where it's at.

I'd say if you shift your budget around (you must have some pricey mids/fwds then) you can upgrade them. Not unless you just brought them in this round.

In a random league I am in (and leading), the second-place guy is catching me up by collecting up 72 points with a 5-5-0 formation this round. I find that quite amusing. 😀

If I confirm some transfer now, am I able to do more before the deadline?

I would like to put Butland in to save some cash, but I want to make my final transfers after the lines up on Wednesday, but I'm afraid if I confirm these one know I would not be able to make the other ones later.

    Please, some help!

I take what Isacki said about most of the teams keeping a CS but all of those teams should have scored at least 3 against their opposition

Should have, but it keeps happening again and again. Silly chances that just won't go in - see Italy v England today, Italy should have scored at least 3 and England could have got 1 or 2. That suggests that when the defending is tight the finishing gets harder. Having started playing 6-a-side this year, I can tell you it looks easier on the telly 😉

I know what you mean but living here in Manchester, we couldn't get enough of the mild climate and sitting on the banks of the Yarra. It even rained regularly so we didn't get homesick.

You can record some of this stuff using software and watch it later.
