The spot-kicks have been despatched, the Fantasy clean sheets are in the bag and Italy, deservedly, have clinched a place in the last four against Germany on Thursday evening. Now we have a three-day break in proceedings before Spain square up to Portugal on Wednesday and, with eight free transfers available to Fantasy managers in the McDonald’s game, plenty of options are being assessed prior to the 7.30pm deadline on June 27:

With so many doubts over who will lead the line for the defending champions, last-minute transfers are likely to come into play on Wednesday. The teams will be announced prior to the deadline, affording Fantasy managers the chance to tinker with their lineups before deciding on final selections.

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have started two games apiece in the middle of the attacking three and both have returned two goals thus far – whoever gets the nod against Paulo Bento’s side will surely see a flurry of transfers before 7.30pm. David Silva looks the only real secure starter of Spain’s classified forwards in the McDonald’s game but has failed to produce any returns in his last couple of appearances. Xabi Alonso’s brace against France will see him pick up plenty interest, while Andres Iniesta’s owners are desperate for an upturn in performance, bearing in mind the midfielder has provided just a single assist over the tournament to date. Turning to the backline, and Jordi Alba in particular, could prove dividend – the left-back is the highest scoring player in the McDonald’s game and rolls up on the back of a 10 point haul against the French.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious option for Portugal. Three goals in his last two games attests to his current form, with the 11.0 priced forward also hitting the woodwork a total of four times against Holland and Czech Republic. Up against Real Madrid team mate Alvaro Arbeloa on the flank, he has the potential to cause the Spaniards plenty of problems if Portugal can get their counter attack game working as they did against the Dutch. Nani is more of a differential with 14% ownership to Ronaldo’s 42% and has provided a pair of assists so far, while Hugo Almeida is likely to lead the line in light of Helder Postiga’s hamstring injury. Joao Moutinho has also matched Nani’s attacking returns, while Pepe’s resilience at the back, in addition to a goal against Denmark, has earned him 20 points, the same amount as Ronaldo.

i recon he'll get 1-4 counter attacks all game, if he can beat players and not waste his chances then he could be a good shout, if he messed up then may end up on 1 pt due to a yellow he's destined to get for complaining or flopping or getting frustrated and having a bad foul

He won't need much of the ball, imo. I'm tipping Portugal to knock out Spain.

Portugal are at their best when they can do thier lightning counter attacks, and I expect this to cause some damage to the Spanish.

It's a joke that Italy and Spain get 2 days less rest than their SF opponents. I get that they need to show the games on TV but they could work it so there is only a days difference.

too much italian def. i'd get rid of one or both of em

would probably lose pirlo too for khedira

gomez unsure to start so swap for silva or torres depending who starts

if fabregas doesn't start take hiim out for alonso or a punt on reus starting

if possbile try to get 1 more german def and 1 more spanish def if possible too (upgrading either italian def or patricio)

It's better to take the riskier option and put in more players from the team you think will win. It maximises the upside. Very seldom do players on the losing team score bags of points. However, players in a team that wins are likely to score bags of points.

        So for the semifinals:

        1) Decide which teams you think will win through to the final.
        2) Choose 6 players that you think will start from each of the teams identified in (1) above.
        3) Choose 3 players from the team that you think will lose in the first semi-final.
        4) Make your initial selection the 6 that will win the first semi, the 3 that will lose the first semi and 2 of those that will win the second semi (with the other 4 on the bench).

If the two teams that you pick fail to win through, you'll be a bit stuck in the final because you will have only 4 transfers available. However, if you hedge your bets as you intend to do, chances are you will lose to someone (maybe not me, but someone else with my point of view) who bets big.

On the other hand, if you pick Ronaldo and Fabregas and Gomez and Balotelli and each bags a hat trick, you will beat me (and those with my point of view (and everyone else in the game for that matter)) hands down. I don't think that that's likely though. Historically (with some exceptions) games in the knockout phase of the World Cup or Euros have been low-scoring affairs, with teams winning more often than not by a single goal.

I don't buy this rubbish that we can't pass a ball due to lack of technique. Yes, our players are miles less gifted than the Spanish, but you don't need to be xabi to pass the ball from A to B over 5 yards. It's a basic skill that ALL premier league players can do with their eyes closed. The fact that they can't put two passes together for England thing is nothing to do with technique. It's all in the head. And parking the bus against average teams like Italy (and Ukraine!!) does nothing more than convince the players to believe the hype that they can't pass a ball so don't even try!!

There's a big step up from having the majority of possession against the likes of Wolves, Stoke, Fulham or whoever and the top international teams. It's not that you're so bad, it's that they are so much better at keeping the ball than you.

Once a team starts to dictate the tempo of a game it's hard to stop it, and as other teams are much better at keeping the ball than England you guys can't dictate the tempo of a game.

I think that Drinky held onto those 4mil players that were available in previous rounds.

That's been a popular strategy that allows one to afford players like Ozil, Ronaldo and Silva.

I take a different view (and I assume you have too). Each round I've had 15 players, each of which I honestly thought could give me a return. This meant transferring out players when they were eliminated in the quarters. As a consequence, Tom can afford more expensive players than we can.

A high price tag doesn't guarantee a return though. Van Persie taught me that during the group stages.

Any fulham or west brom fans on? I was just wondering if we can expect a different approach from hodgson now? I'm hoping that he looked at it, and decided with the short preperation time the only way to do anything in this tournament was to park the bus, even against teams ranked 40+ in the world! With being in a relatively easy group for the qualifiers, might he look to change it a little bit?

Portugal really? That has 1:0 all over it IMO. Well someone posted that every 8 years the final is the same as the first group match. And when I watched the Spain Italy game I sad to my mate, I have a hunch this is the final. Italy aren't just defending anymore? Nice balance between defending and some creative football. Also mix of young guns and veterans. I like what Prandeli has done.

If it gets revoked (I was joking), you only need a change of tactics, or an Abate injury.

Four at the back is working very well for Italy, so i expect Abate to stay, especially as he gave such a great performance. And as soon as Italy lose the ball nearly all their players swarms back to defend. I worry about Germany's ability to counter attack though, which i consider to be Italy's weakness.

He would have some chances created for Carrol/ Rooney for sure. Also that side would have been much better from defensive point of view.

OR maybe 4 5 1 formation Rooney in the mid, like for Utd

          Well I have:
          4 Spain, 5 German, 1 Portugal (Oliveira doesn't count ) and 2 Italy atm.

Scenario 1 Germany and Spain goes throw all good
          Scenario 2 Germany and Portugal final then I have 5 + 1 + 4 transfers = 10 players - problem
          Scenario 3 Spain and Italy final then I have 4 + 2 + 4 transfer = 10 players - problem
Scenario 4 Italy and Portugal final ok lets face it than we are all f. up and in the same boat 😀

So if Spain and Germany don't play the final almost everybody will have to make a hit for full 11 players

            I am going for a 5-1, 3-3 split. Meaning that as long as I get the 5-1 right, no matter how the second game goes I will have 5 + 3 + 4 transfers = 12 available for the final. Downside is, if I get the 5-1 wrong, I am screwed with 1 + 3 + 4 = 8.

Your 4-1, 5-2 split seems like you should drop one player from GER-ITA (7 -> 6) to purchase an additional player from the SPA-POR game (5 -> 6). That should solve your -1 problem in scenarios 2 and 3.

You can play it two ways imo. Safe and sound (and boring), with 4 krauts, 4 paellas, and some grappa and port wine to fill it up.

Or you can gamble heavily on one of the two outsiders - differential city. Basically if you need to make up points fast.

    England - Italy

England probably the better side for the first 15 minutes. Then Rooney just stopped jogging after Pirlo and the Italian had 105 minutes of unsuppressed passing practice, leading to a plethora of chances despite two banks of lying too deep.

I can't help but think if Hodgson had the marbles, he would have taken off Rooney and have someone else - who actually was willing - to mark him. Off the top of my head: Milner, with Walcott out wide.

I like the idea of playing the Ox there. He would surely have given Pirlo a hard time.

The point is though, when it was blatantly obvious how Pirlo being allowed acres of space, created chance after chance for Italy, why did Hodgson not try to change the (defensive) approach to the game?

      My Italy - Germany Predictions

If Italy play 3 at the back, they keep a CS and go through.
If Italy play 4, Germany rip them apart on the counter attack and go through, with Ozil getting double figures.

After Abate's good performance i expect him to start again which means they play four at the back. I can't see Italy winning.
