Italy outplay England from start to finish over 120 minutes but still require spot-kicks to book a place in the last four of Euro after a resilient display by Roy Hodgson’s men. The goalless draw was at least beneficial to Fantasy managers, with both defences returning clean sheets for their owners last night – the Azzurri now square up to Germany on Thursday, while England board the next flight home:

England 0 Italy 0
Roy Hodgson kept faith in the same XI that saw off Ukraine in the previous match, with Wayne Rooney partnering Danny Welbeck up top. The former looked well off the pace throughout, though, and managed just two efforts all game – indeed, as an attacking force, England were virtually non-existent, with a single shot on target all evening. Joe Hart picked up eight points, thanks to eight saves and a clean sheet, while both Joleon Lescott and Glen Johnson benefitted from the recovered balls rule to produce seven points apiece. Lescott finished the tournament as England’s top points scorer with 24, just one ahead of Steven Gerrard – the skipper picked up five points last night after registering a staggering 13 recovered balls; a clear indication of just how much his side were under the cosh as he helped break up wave after wave of Italian attacks.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli made three alterations from the game against Republic of Ireland. Leonardo Bonucci replaced the injured Giorgio Chiellini at centre-half, while Thiago Motta and Antonio Di Natale made way for Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli respectively.

Bonucci was Italy’s main performer after producing an eight point haul thanks to 11 recovered balls but Chiellini may return by Thursday, raising doubts against his acquisition. Ignazio Abate looks an absolute steal at 4.9 in the McDonald’s game – with Christian Maggio now suspended for the semis, the former’s role at right-back looks nailed-on. Federico Balzaretti also stood out, picking up a seven point return at the back and is available for 5.4 – whether you’d want to back them against the Germans, though, is another matter entirely.

Andrea Pirlo was unlucky not to grab any attacking returns – he provided six goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (equalled, intriguingly, by Claudio Marchisio) while Fantasy owners of Antonio Cassano and, in particular, Mario Balotelli will be frustrated after the pair fired 15 shots between them, with the latter managing 10. Both look likely to lead the line again on Thursday and, with so much uncertainty over Joachim Low’s forwards, look decent mid-price alternatives for those Fantasy managers who fancy the Azzurri to upset the odds, coming in at 8.0 and 8.5 respectively in the McDonald’s game.

      bender hummels badstuber lahm
      kdheira schwien
      reus ozil podolski
      gomez

Think he will drop boateng after his woeful defending against greece, muller has been quite poor and after reus impressed would think he might start, dont think schurrle did enough to oust podolski and i think gomez will be restored. Klose played well but looked rusty.

Italy swarm behind the ball when they lose it so Germany will want to play counter attacking football. That is why i think Muller, Klose Podolski will start, and Ozil will get double figures.

FFS Friendly World Cup Quarter Finals Reviews

    QF1

Switzerland def. Mexico 141-127. This back and forth tie was ultimately decided by 1 man. James_Fitz's decision to put the armband on Xabi Alonso proved crucial as his 28 point haul decided this tie in favour of the Group A winners. Jk and Sleep Talk finished neck and neck on 64 points but Snowy could only manage 63 to James' 77. Mexico can consider themselves somewhat unlucky to have faced the only side that outscored them in this round. In matchday 1, there was just CR7 in common for all 4 men. Whilst both Snowy and Sleep opted for Rui Patricio between the sticks, James_Fitz matched 1 of these with Joao Perrerira, whilst JK's double on Perreiera and Pepe gave the Swiss a matchday 1 advantage. But Matchday 2 saw the tie swing in Mexico's favour. A lack of Ozil for the Swiis proved decisive as Sleep Talk went Ozil (c). Both Swiss members went fro Neuer, whislt both JK and Snowy lost out on a German double in defence, despite Boateng's assist. In matchday 3, we have seen that Alonso proved decisive as both JK and Snowy claimed 20 points from an Alba (c) whilst Jks Busquets outscored Sleep's Iniesta. A double Lescott CS on Machday 4 was not enough to overturn the deficit for Mexico as Switzerland Pirlo and Gerrard double, coupled with a Balzaretti CS saw them home. The USA await in the semi-finals.

    Hmm, tough decisions to make..

    Neuer, 4.0
    Badstuber, Alba, Pereira, Abate, 4.0
    Pirlo, Ozil, Reus, Fabregas, 4.0
    Ronaldo, Silva, Oliveira

If German team news is leaked again, and it looks like Reus will start then I'll have him, looks like I'll have to drop a forward spot for Oliveira due to budget too..

    Any advice with this?

Silva has managed to look dangerous every game, though I suppose so has Iniesta, and he has nothing to show for it.

Maybe I'm just keeping faith with him because of that 26 point captaincy haul, I dunno

I have Ronaldo. Reason being - Spain are poor at the back! A run of clean sheets are disguising the fact that nobody is actually managing to attack them in the tournament so far (except Italy, and they got through) - and if any of the semi-finalists can do effective counter-attacking football with limited possession it's going to by Portugal (and CR7 in particular).

    No?

Yup, the only problem is that Portugal can't score if they don't have the ball 😉

Ronaldo will break forward with it at some point, the whole attack is funnelled to him so I'm keeping him

Managing to attack Spain is equivalent to gaining possession and leaving enough of your players upfield to actually have someone to pass to. Will Portugal leave enough players up? If they do I think they will be destroyed as their defence isn't up to much. I see little reason for the game to be much different from 2 years ago in the World Cup when Spain won 1-0, except the Portuguese defence is worse so Spain should score more.

Portuguese defence was completely untested against the Czechs and that's how they got their first clean sheet of the tournament.

Ronaldo has offered threat but his finishing has been poor. This has been against sides that have offered much more chances. I only see diminishing returns from here.

Ok I have decided to sell Pirlo.

Here is why, I genuinely think Germnay will beat Italy. Therefore I will have to sell Pirlo for the final anyway, wasting a precious FT.

Furthermore I believe he will not have the time and space on the ball v Germany that he had v England to pick a pass. Also, given that he is 33, had a match of 2 hours and will have 2 days less rest than the Germans I could be difficult for him to produce again. Thus I am likely to sell him for Ozil as i will have the cash from shifting Gomez to Olivera

to be honest they wasn't impressive at all in group stages and if ref gave denmark that penalty they could be out

aslo they been fanatastic in QF but they play against the weakiest side in QF by FAR

      Fair enough ...

I'll be keeping him because if (big if), Italy make the final, he'll be THE player I want most from Italy. It comes down to your propensity to gamble on players from teams you think will make the final. I'll only have 1 or max 2 Italy players but he will be in my team.

We all need to get the odd player who isn't going to make the final and Pirlo is virtually #1 on that list mate. If you were given the chance to pick a player who plays virtually every key pass for a team, both in open play and dead balls, you would take it.

If Skrtel and Agger both stay then barring injuries the chances are very low.

Agger has committed his future to the club, despite interest from Madrid, and Skrtel hasn't yet, with a rumoured £20m bid from City, but I the it's likely they'll both stay.

He should be first choice backup though, and with Agger's history of injury problems he could get a run in the team (hopefully Carra will be phased out)

Trouble is, without Agger Liverpool's defence just isn't the same, he is the strongest link. And we've yet to see what Rodgers will do, but hopefully he'll maintain defensive solidity.

Anything for a brutha. I think Schwein is a bit overpriced for his potential (particularly as he seemed to peak early and looked a bit dead against Greece). I'd downgrade him and try to get more than 3 defenders as I think clean sheets are where it's at. Get Fabregas.

I do think he'll start in line with how Spain have played decent teams who park the bus (Ireland don't count!) See if you were able to check the teamsheets on the day, I'd definitely tell you to take Fab, but I know it would cost you if he doesn't.

A lot hinges on the teamsheets and missing out is pretty unfortunate. Take it or leave it but I'm willing to help you out if you want - if you send me one team with Fab and one without and (you'll have to take this one on faith) your login details, I will put in the appropriate team before the deadline for you.

Is this based on Klose's mobility? See that's an interesting one. If it was about Klose's mobility, why didn't Low start him against Netherlands and Portugal, both of which you'd think could park the bus with their defensive midfielders sitting in front of the back four, and both of which have central defenders that aren't renowned for pace?

I think he had faith in Gomez throughout the group stage, or rather, he didn't have so much faith in Klose. I think after the last display from Klose, Low is going to pick him. Although Germany looked good in the group stage, I thought they looked at their most deadly in attack against Greece.

I have no facts though, it's just a hunch. And if all it is is a hunch come deadline day, I will leave them both out.

Fair enough. Agree with you on the hunch. It may just be that the Germans pick teams differently from us. We talk about having faith in players, dropping them, sticking with them. They may just be ruthlessly efficient and play whichever team is tactically optimal.

Germany did look very dangerous against Greece. Low was getting wound up by their finishing in the first half in fact, not their lack of chances. It is one of those classic situations though where I'm not sure it's fair to compare the strikers with games against Portugal and Netherlands, whose defences were flawed but certainly better than Greece's.

Thats true, and if Low is anything like me (us) he must have thought "Gomez would have scored that" about 10 times in that first half 😉

Ideally I think Fab and Torres should be started. Drop Busquets to the bench and move Xavi back to Defensive Mid. So have it like:

      Casillas

      Arbeloa - Pique - Ramos - Alba

      ----- Alonso --- Xavi --------

      Silva ------ Fabregas ---- Iniesta

      --------- Torres -------------------

Based on form, I'd say drop Xavi. And it really is time Negredo or Llorente got a start, Spain have been pretty poor in the incision department. They've been the biggest disappointment against expectations (bar the Dutch) of the tournament.

I thought the same and the search facility is crap, but it's kind of an either/or thing. It doesn't make sense to break the discussions into two. The main point of having the comment section I think is so that the article can set the agenda for discussions. That way the site can drive discussions.

been discussed many times but it was felt that topics would get buried away out of sight.

FFS is all (mostly) all about what is happening now (with some banter thrown in). a forum structure would not work.

I can see what the downside would be if it changed to a forum, I just feel the downside of this set up is worse. Maybe some more work on the functionality of this set up would help but not sure what can and can't be done on wordpress. Its like this topic as its gone onto the next page not many people are going to see it to contribute. Also I have to keep coming back to find it to see if people have added comments which is pretty laborious

    Neuer, Butland (X)
Hummels, Coentrao, Alba, Maniatis (X), Limbersky (X)
Pirlo, Khedira, Moutinho, Hubschman (X), Fortounis (X)
    Silva, Gomez, Ronaldo

Obvious thing to do is sacrifice CR7 and maybe Pirlo.

Moutinho is a bit overpriced as he's about as likely to assist as Busquets and the latter probably gets more RBs. Downgrade him to the latter.

Can't you downgrade Hubschman as he is using up your money?

Problem is he's not even much of a punt because Moutinho is involved in virtually none of the attacking play, which comes down the wings. The Portuguese central midfield is surprisingly uncreative and lacks the creative number 10 (Figo/Deco kind of player) we've been used to.

I doubt there'll be much point having Torres and Fabregas, as they seem to share that position. I'm also not sure Silva is worth it, maybe you could do with some more Germans?

My front 3 at the moment are:

              Ronaldo-Klose-Oliveira

Ronaldo and Oliveira are in, Oliveira will be my 12th man (I know he won't start, and maybe won't even come on as a sub, but I want to strengthen elsewhere more, I think there's better value to be had in Midfield and Defence now)

Although a big part of me thinks that Spain will keep a CS, and I might risk it all to catch my ML leader with 5 Spain defenders and no Portugese. I probably don't have the guts though.

That makes me even more tempted! I'd have 5-4-1

                  Casillas
                  All 4 Spa def-Hummels
                  Ozil-Khediera-Alonso-Busquets (Maniatis)
                  Klose (Varela, Oliveira)

I haven't checked I can afford this though. I think it looks like it could do well!

lol but don't forget, portugal scoring only one goal, can flush your plans away...
but of course as I said before, we struggle to hit the net... but if we make a good start, I can see goals from both sides...

Beric, I'm having a very similar discussion with myself about this. Spain up top have been poor and there's a lot of spec over starters. But back five looked nailed, with possible exception of Arbeloa.

If there's a CS in SF, SPA and perhaps GER will get it, IMO. Simialrly tempted to go all out GER def, as a plan B.

Just signed up for membership for the first time and having a little play around - Shane Ferguson's average position in GW15 last season is great! 🙂

Judging from the map it would appear he spent his limited game time that week preparing to take a corner but never got round to it.

He's come on as a sub in 3 of their 4 games, and now they have one less striker to use. That's more than you can expect from Makos/Maniatis

guess so.. considerin spain and germany don't have settled strike forces i think i'll take a punt to.. use the cash in midfield
