Scout Notes

Is now the time to sell Everton’s value-for-money FPL midfielders?

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Everton v Watford.

For a briefer summary of all six of Saturday’s games, click here, while the footer at the bottom of this piece will direct you to our detailed Scout Notes on the other Gameweek 9 action.

EVERTON 2-5 WATFORD

  • Goals: Tom Davies (£4.9m), Richarlison (£7.4m) | Joshua King (£5.5m) x3, Juraj Kucka (£5.5m), Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Demarai Gray (£5.8m), Michael Keane (£5.0m) | Craig Cathcart (£4.4m), Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m), Dennis x2, Joao Pedro (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: King x3, Dennis x2, Keane x1

BENITEZ’S HONEYMOON OVER?

Everton’s attacking assets have offered us some excellent value for money this season but we might be reaching the jumping-off point for Andros Townsend (£5.7m) and co, not just because of Saturday’s freak 5-2 loss to Watford.

Depending on your view of the backlines of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, the Toffees’ favourable fixture run has, or soon will, come to an end.

Rafael Benitez’s troops sit bottom of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 10-18, meeting all bar Manchester United of the ‘big six’ plus Leicester City and Brentford.

Demarai Gray (£5.8m) still found a way to deliver his fifth attacking return of the season with his assist for Everton’s opener but it was a largely lethargic offensive display for the third home match running, with injuries perhaps finally catching up with the blue half of Merseyside.

Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) yet again flattered to deceive in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), while Abdoulaye Doucoure‘s (£5.8m) first no-show of 2021/22 was felt at both ends of the pitch.

Yerry Mina (£4.9m) was arguably the biggest loss, as the out-of-sorts Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Ben Godfrey (£4.8m) served up a horror show at the back.

“Today was not about [the injured players], we had enough quality on the pitch to win – and we were winning. It is up to us to manage the situation and improve that. Some players were a little bit tired but it doesn’t matter, it is not an excuse. We have to be better – especially when you are in control of the game. You can’t make the mistakes we made.” – Rafael Benitez

While Gray, Townsend and Doucoure have been success stories in Benitez’s traditionally strong start at a new club, Lucas Digne (£5.3m) has arguably been the biggest FPL flop of the campaign: the France international averages under 1.9 points per match after a ticker-topping opening nine Gameweeks.

A positive was the goalscoring return of substitute Richarlison (£7.4m), at least, with the Brazilian’s comeback presumably now meaning that Townsend’s stint as penalty-taker has come to an end.

KING LEADS THE LINE FOR NEW-LOOK WATFORD

After seeing his new charges thrashed by Liverpool last weekend, Claudio Ranieri had a full week of training with his Watford squad and set his side up in a 4-3-3, following the disastrous wing-back experiment of Gameweek 8.

Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) was back in the right-wing role that seems to suit him best but somehow he missed out on any attacking return after a rare off-day and early substitution, leaving a quartet of sub-£6.0m forwards to do the damage.

Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) hadn’t even started the game but replaced Sarr to bank three attacking returns and move up to sixth in the FPL forwards’ points table, while the corner-taking Cucho Hernandez (£5.0m) – again preferred on the left flank – and substitute Joao Pedro (£5.4m) each chipped in with an assist apiece.

Star of the show, though, was Joshua King (£5.5m).

Deployed in the middle of the front three, King racked up a total of four big chances and an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 2.13, totals beaten by only Christian Benteke (£6.3m) in the Gameweek just gone.

“For a striker it is confidence. I had a horrible season last season. Any striker when you start scoring gets confidence.” – Joshua King

The Norwegian has now quietly amassed six attacking returns in his last four appearances for the Hornets, although like Everton, King and his teammates languish at the wrong end of the Season Ticker over the next six matches: they’re probably a ‘hold but don’t buy’ for Gameweek 10, after which comes a particularly nasty set of five games:

The good news for owners of Armando Broja (£5.0m) et al ahead of next Saturday was that, despite an improved defensive showing, the Watford backline still managed to concede twice to a below-par Everton; that makes it nine Premier League matches without a clean sheet for the Hornets.

Dennis will miss that match against the Saints, meanwhile, having collected his fifth booking of the campaign.

Everton XI (4-4-1-1): Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne, Townsend, Davies, Allan, Gordon (Richarlison 60). Gray (Iwobi 77), Rondon.

Watford XI (4-3-3): Foster, Ngakia (Nkoulou 76), Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Masina, Tufan (Pedro 64), Sissoko, Kucka, Sarr (Dennis 64), King, Hernandez.

Leic v Arsenal is the early kickoff this week so should have clear Vardy news before that.
Brentford news for Mbuemo could be vague. Might have to hold off bringing him in if nothing concrete.
With Leeds playing Sunday night, will Bielsa presser be before the deadline?

Unpopular opinion: if you're outside 500k, you may need to cap someone other than Salah from time to time to try improve your rank. This week is definitely not that week though.

captaincy isn't the only place to make gains and in the form salah is in he can haul massively anytime and losing out on 15 odd points can and will just drop you further behind, at this point if you want to make up ground you need to go for good differentials and double ups and leave certain players as set and forget and move between players early enough to get differential value out of them, its obviously not easy and there are some 50/50 calls that need to go your way, but captain punts is gamblers fallacy

think this is where i'm a classic example of this, well....now in that position because of last GW's damage anyway, hardest fall ever since playing. Gonna be sensible with the captain choices and try to climb with fringe players and leave as is, double ups etc.

If it were GW30 I'd agree, but it's far too early to make reckless risks. Marathon not a sprint and all that.

There's 29 GWs left and plenty had a bad GW9. Better than having it in GW38, there's time to catch up. Loads will make mistakes and bad judgements like picking out of form players just because they've a DGW or benchboosting with a good bench that leaves you with a weaker 11 for subsequent weeks. Often the best thing to do after a bad week is nothing. Roll a transfer and if you can play 11 do that because plenty will take one ir two hits after a bad GW9. Depending on Raphina, Vardy, Tierney fitness that's a good team. Keep Havertz another week, maybe move Alonso on soon. But captain Salah. Not doing that is asking for trouble without clearer better captain options.

Thank you so much GR, much appreciated and some really good points made there.
Very true about people taking hits after a bad GW, I should of mentioned there I’ve already used the free transfer for Alonso > Chillwell, but won’t be taking any hits if I can help it for sure.
I need to stay calm like you imply and do nothing and just try to climb a little bit now each GW. Was just so costly last GW, crazy really, but it’s only GW 9 like you say, 29 more to go 🙂
            Thank you again bud

Really good advice, that. In these instances, sometimes patience is the most important "skill" to have in FPL.
Often taking hits points chasing after a shocking week sets you back even further.

Looking through your first few weeks, you were doing really well. I think you've struggled because of the threemium you moved to in gw5. You've had little to no bench since, giving you no choices for difficult fixtures and resulting in you taking a lot of hits to field 11. That being said, Salah, Vardy and Son is a lot cheaper than Sal/Luk/Ron. I'm considering it too. Seems a shame to have scarlett when broja (5.0) could be on your bench instead or rotated in depending on fixtures... My advice would be to move to a more flexible team/deeper bench and take fewer hits. Your team looks good atm. Maybe benrahma to kovacic, gallagher, mbeumo, someone in that price range to upgrade scarlett into the picture. Alonso - Chillwell maybe? Hard to know though.

Thanks so much MM, yeah I totally agree with that about moving to the three premiums, it limited movement so much, I got blinded, thankfully I’m closer to sorting that out. Son takes lot of money up but he does have some nice fixtures coming up.
Scarlett definitely needs to be turned into an actual player, I’ll defo switch Benrahma to someone cheaper or Havertz maybe if this GW goes wrong with him again, and replace with Kovacic like you mention.
Oh, I’ve already done Alonso to Chillwell with my FT 🙂
Anything else this GW would be for a hit now.
I think for now, keep calm with myself and strengthen the fringe players for a better bench. Just takes so long doing it for free, or feels like it does anyway haha

personally I think you need to cover Salah’s EO as captain and make up the difference elsewhere because Salah is likely to be the highest scoring Captain choice anyway, except if he is coming up against Chelsea or Man City maybe

I did captain Lukaku in GW4 & Son in GW3 though and managed to get away with it 🙂

Last season I tried to gain rank while chasing and doing stuff like this is what kept me mid-table in my mini-leagues. It'd be great if it was a bit more fun and outside picks could often do it for you, but in reality the obvious and highly selected choice is normally that for a reason. I've had 3 captain blanks so far this season and two of those were when I went against the grain.

Nonsense. It’s still so early and gains can easily be made other ways. My worst season was when I gambled with the captaincy and ended up over 300k at end of season (never been outside top 50k in over 10 seasons)

      Looking at analogous move

Aiming to move to 3-5-2/4-4-2 on a. one premium set up. Issue for me is the next move - ie what to do with the extra cash afterwards. Will Foden plus Jota plus Defender be better value than Foden plus Son. Rather think it could be. Working on the basis there that this is prime Liverpool and any attacking asset from there will be excellent value despite slightly dicey minutes.

Cancelo, Chilwell is looking great now but I still think he'll get a benching at some stage soon and Chelsea aren't as tight defensively as they were last season by any means. I'd say Newcastle could well score against them this weekend and then they face Leicester, ManUtd (probably under a better manager) and West Ham in the 4 after Burnley.

Nobody should be selling a quality OOP mid that plays Newcastle and Burnley next.

But he wants to sell Kai Havertz, 5 goals in 32 PL games for one of the top teams in the league. No doubts he's a quality footballer, but he hasn't unleashed his potential yet at PL level.

Using stats when he was at DM/RW/CM is misleading as he's now up top, which was the main reason for players getting him.

Hopefully he'll do good there, could displace Werner. Too good a footballer to not do well I think. Pulisic to return too, another quality player as long as he can stay fit.

Keep if Lukaku and Werner are still out. If it looks like Lukaku will be back then maybe just bite the bullet and get rid, it'll feel like a waste but no sense in prolonging it.

Rob (@FPLHaul) has some very damning stats on Chelsea's CF's under Tuchel. I'd keep him cos you'll regret it if he does something (not worth a -4 imo) but it appears his role is to draw defenders away to create space.

Hadn't considered taking Christensen out. If I had the funds for both of those I'd probably do it.

I'm planing on using my WC when i really have no choice, I believe I can get a pretty stable team just doing a couple of transfers. If i do the transfers I wrote it would get me a team with 2 chelsea defenders, 2 Liverpool, the best spurs asset and some coverage in city with the option of taking in a city defeander and going 4-4-2 in 2 GWs. I've allways used my Wc early before and I allways regret it later in the season...

I don't really see the point in delaying your wc when a new one becomes available in week 19.
I played my wc in week 4 and only needed to make 5 transfers. Had weekly rank rises since.

The new one is available in GW19, but most save it until DGWs after GW30. So it's irrelevant that it's available well before that

Appreciate your views on where to improve this wild card team or who is the weak link?

    Sánchez - Steele
    TAA - Chilwell - Rudiger - Livra - Lamptey
    Salaha - Foden - Mount - Tielemans - ESR
    Antonio - Wilson - Jesus

Preferred line up 3-4-3 but can easily rotate for fixtures.

To be honest, I think Solskjear is getting too much criticism lately. He's not that bad manager, it's just that Lfc, Man city and Chelsea currently have probably the best 3 managers in the world. The bigger issue imho is their transfer policy, which looks like a 12-year-old playing Fifa.
